Hello and welcome to my channel!
I'm Martin, a cyclist in my late 40s (turning 50 in 2025 - yikes!!) and I live on the amazing Lancashire/Yorkshire border (in northwest England, UK). Between family and work commitments I like to get out out my bikes as much as possible. Contrary to more recent trends in cycling, none of my bikes cost more than my car ... and I drive a fairly inexpensive second-hand car!
Over the last few years I've completed some of the UK's iconic multi-day cycle tours and I've also started doing my own bike maintenance at home, learning more about gear and keeping relatively inexpensive bikes on the road and in good condition.
If you like what you see please subscribe and come along for the ride (pun intended!). Hopefully the videos will get better as I figure out what I'm actually doing!
Happy cycling and stay safe!

A CYCLING SKILL EVERY BIKE RIDER SHOULD LEARN
มุมมอง 11K21 วันที่ผ่านมา
There's a particular cycling skill that I first practiced as part of my motorcycle training back in the 90s and over the years I've come to rely on it, especially when out on the road bike. I think it's one of the most important things to know and be able to do on a bike. I'd love to hear your thoughts on how important (or otherwise) you think this skill is, and whether you use any of the 'tech...
Yorkshire Dales MTB - Malham Area is STUNNING!
มุมมอง 801หลายเดือนก่อน
A quiet, mixed terrain mid-week ride in the Yorkshire Dales, visiting three amazing spots in the Malham area - Malham Cove, Malham Tarn and Gordale Scar. A chilly ride with limited daylight at this time of year but I hope you'll agree well worth the effort. And as for the best view in the Dales ... well, let me know what you think. It's certainly in my top 5 I think! :) Happy cycling folks!
How to Make Winter Cycling More Comfortable

A quick mid-week spin in my local hills, enjoying the first snowy conditions of the year and making a few - perhaps rather obvious - comments about how we can make life a bit easier on the bike over the winter months if we still intend to cycle outdoors. Plenty of black ice on the trails at the moment so if you are heading out take care! Happy cycling!

Should You Compare Yourself To Other Cyclists?
มุมมอง 7082 หลายเดือนก่อน
Join me on a mid-week ride heading east into some fairly hilly and tough cycling country, well for me at least. I'm not a big one for comparing myself to others on the bike but I wonder if there are times when making comparisons might be a good thing? Anyway, that was the topic for a bit of chat en route! Do you see any benefits of comparing yourself as a cyclist with others, or as something to...

Be Safe, Be Seen When Cycling - But What About Dark Clothing?

The weather is really starting to turn colder now, so I've invested in a new winter jacket. Only one colour option available in the store (black!), which got me thinking about the topic of 'be safe, be seen' and whether dark clothing or black really is an appropriate colour to wear on a bike. Do you steer clear of darker clothing when you're out cycling, or use extra reflective kit? What about ...

Great balanced video. I like you and updating my original bolt for v2 and this review has helped. TY
I hope you keep doing videos of your local area too. It's fairly local for me too and gives me ideas for new routes and stunning vistas.
TH-cam is a great resource for route ideas, isn't it and I must admit I do the same with a few other local TH-camrs. Thanks as always for the comment AJ and have a great New Year! 🙂
Wishing you all the best for 2025. Good with your new bike and don't feel pressured to make videos. Do what you want and enjoy your passion. Jay
Happy New year and keep up the good work and stay on that bike haha.
Cheers, Sean. Have a great New Year and start to '25! 🙂
I wish you a great cycling 2025. I hear what you say about pumping out new videos, TH-cam is a greedy beast and keeping a clear idea why you started the channel is a sound idea. I followed one TH-camr who made interesting videos. He then started putting out 1 or 2 each week. The content wasn't as good and contained too many product endorsements. The final turn off was making a subscription section where you got early access or bonus footage. After that I stopped watching. Intrigued with the new bike, can't have too many although I've only got two. I had a doctors appointment first thing today. It's just above freezing and very misty so I decided not to have a ride. As usual seeing you out riding made me get on the bike, only 10 miles but ended up with really cold hands and feet. Am I glad I went? You bet I am! Thanks for some lovely rides and some interesting subjects about cycling throughout the year.
Thanks so much for following along this year, Colin and kudos for getting out today! I'm sure it's a minefield if you actually tried YouTubing as any kind of serious income or career option. So many ways to get 'blown off course' I'm sure. Hope you have a great New Year and start to '25. 🙂
I have a small bar end mirror on my Emtb and find it a lifesaver. You can see traffic approaching from a good distance back which you aren’t always aware of due to wind noise etc.
Hi Martin, really enjoying the channel, but couldn't help noticing the guitar in the background. I'm learning (very slowly) to play. Not cycling related, but just wondering what you played.
Thanks, Chris. I've always had a few instruments knocking around the house since doing an initial music degree back in the 90s (ex trombone player). The guitar is a Sigma OOOM-15 from about 2005. I had a clear out of guitars earlier this year as they weren't getting played much but couldn't part with this one as it's great for 5-10 minute noodling now and again and has such a nice sound (sustain for days)! Good luck with the guitar practice, picking up an instrument is such a great thing to do! A good teacher makes a huge difference too! What guitar do you play?
Thanks for replying, Martin. My guitar is an Epiphone SG. I'm trying to play mainly AC/DC stuff as I've listened to them for years. I tried lessons, but I found the pace of learning too fast for me. I was using all my spare time to practice what I was given, so I could do it for the next lesson. ( I had no time to ride my bike). So now I just learn at my own pace from TH-cam videos. Thanks again Martin, wishing you and your family a Happy New Year.
Merry Christmas to you fella and all your viewers. Looking forward to seeing and learning more about your latest acquisition. Best wishes for 2025 and as always keep up the good work 👍🏼
Cheers, Sheetal. Thanks for following along this year and hope you all have a great New Year! 🙂
Looking forward to seeing you're new bikes great video 📹
Thanks, Matt. They reckon it'll be built up and ready mid-January. Can't wait to get some rides in and introduce the new wheels. Have a great New Year!
The Big One..wow, hope it happens for you. Alas I'd like to send you a chrissy present of some local sunshine and warmth but not possible. We got 42 celcius a few days ago, can still go cycling, just got to get up early. Bike Trekking with Karl is a newish youtuber around Manchester who enjoys a little inter-reaction with his subscribers too. Anyway sounds like 2025 is sounding positive with new bike. Catch ya Randell
Cheers, Randel. Wow, 42 degrees! Hard to fathom over here at the moment! I guess you're in 'get out early and back by mid morning' territory. Nice way to get a jump on the day though! Happy cycling (and thanks again for sending your question over!) 🙂
Hi Martin great to see you in action again and yes you get cold very fast once you stop riding . Don’t beat yourself up about your channel you’re doing a great job and I look forward to your visits all the time. Your mannerisms, editing, advice , and bike craft is quality and as a newby it’s all good. There are plenty of other similar channels but most don’t cut it so well done . I have just managed to round off a chocolate rear axel bolt which is now going to cost me £24.00 bike wasn’t cheap but this is the standard of equipment these days …Good luck with the new bike K2 next? 😂😂😂👌🎥🚴♂️
Thanks, RB! Appreciate the nice feedback and we'll keep rolling the camera next year for sure. Hope you get the new bolt sorted and back out on the road. I'm rather glad my climbing/mountaineering days are behind me - a bike ride out to base camp would probably be fun though! 😉
@@onemorecyclist your welcome just managed to get the axel bolt out as the other side has the same fitment to receive the key and I have put it back in so the new one will come in handy for a spare . Still misty fog here but I am surprised how cold it is ..Catch you soon best Mike .🚴♂️
I hope your RTW or U.S. trip happens mate. Both trips of a lifetime, that's for sure. Is your new bike a custom build? Im going to guess a Titanium drop bar bike lol Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.👍
Cheers, Dal. Merry Christmas and have a great New Year. Lots would need to fall into place for those trips to happen but I'm definitely adopting the 'never say never' approach. Titanium drop bar ... damn it, that's another bike I'd love to own now! 😉
Thank you for the excellent content, have a great new year 👍 Oooohhh posh TH-camr with loads of money buying a new bike 😂
Hahaha ... positively rolling in it from the Tube royalties. Watch out for the new S-Works and selling you Squarespace every other video in '25! 😉 ... Have a great NY, Andrew!
All the best Martin, looking forward to 2025 and more top videos.
Thanks, John. Hope you have a great start to '25!
Thank you for your brilliant content. I look forward with great anticipation for your future efforts in 2025. Happy Christmas and New Year. Keep up the fantastic work! Truly thankful!
Thanks for the lovely comment, Evan. I'll definitely keep the camera rolling next year! Have a great new year and start to '25! 🙂
Thanks for sharing a nice video taking in my local area as well , hope the new year and new bike is going to be an exciting time for you and the Chanel, thanks again 👍
Thanks, Brian. It's a very nice part of the world to ride a bike in! Although I hadn't quite realised how much uphill there would be getting back to Bradford from Wakefield! Have a good New Year!
Just changed the crankset for shimano 105 l had to change the bottom bracket bearing for a shimano one if anyone is considering it and adjusted the front mech
You did it again, the perfect music and video combo. Thanks again.
Thanks, Frank. Have a great New Year! 🙂
well done on getting out mate! great channel, happy new year!
Thanks, Paul. Have a great New Year and here's to plenty of rides in '25!
@@onemorecyclist I hope that you like your new bike mate - fabulous decision that will propel you through 2025. Personally I need to kick myself in the backside and get back in some sort of "training" (totally out of it since mid-November)
I'd detected a few new-bike-twitches over the past couple of months! It'll be interesting to see what you end up with. The Transpennine upgrade closure claims two more victims. I'm beginning to wonder if that connecting route to the canal will ever reopen. All the best with ride-projects great and small.
Thanks, Gordon. Yes that old n+1 feeling was running strong in the last half of the year. We noticed the TP closure sign after doubling back - hilarious that they put the closure date but no indication whatsoever how long or when it would reopen. All part of the fun! Ditto, looking forward to all your 2025 channel projects! 🙂
That was fantastic to watch. In the first part of the video, you skirted around Skipton Castle which I used to cycle past every day on the way to school. Then you cycled up The Bailey and where you turned off heading for Embsay I used to live on the estate opposite. I also used to go out with a girl from Embsay! Thank you for the memories. Jay
Thanks, Jay. What a cool place to grow up - at least from the outside looking in ;). Bingley was home for me (well, Gilstead) but we got out to Skipton quite a bit on the old rigid mountain bikes. Stirs up lots of memories too when I'm over that way. Happy cycling! 🙂
The video is a great help and shows the use of the Tern folder off road. It is no mountain bike, but seems entirely suitable for rail trails, canal paths, or other non-technical applications. It seems an attractive choice for someone who wants to transport their ride inside a vehicle without much fuss.
Thanks, Phil. Yes I think it's a bike that opens up lots of cycling and integrated transport options. I must admit I dismissed folding bikes for years and one of the biggest surprises has been just how much it rides and feels like a 'proper bike', but like you say one I could sling in the boot of my car without any fuss.
I'm watching your last video regarding safety cycling. I agree with the majority of your comments, The issue regards mirrors,I ride with other elderly cyclists, and due to our ages, all of us use strait bars now, and all use end of bar mirrors, they are short, therfore there is no vibration. Due to having a neck movement reduction (age related), I find it essential and also stops the movement towards the middle of the road. I can, with the mirror, constantly check the road behind me Regards Mike the bike Shrewsbury
I'm becoming a bit of a fan of mirrors reading through these comments like yours, Mike. Thanks for watching and have a great Xmas! 🙂
As a Dalesman, you have done a great job of giving people a taste of what The Yorkshire Dales has to offer. Thanks :)
Thanks, Jay. The Dales can be quite a tough place to cycle in (especially if you're not used to hilly riding) but I think this makes a great little introduction to what it's all about! Have a great Xmas! 🙂
Great ride very enjoyable and it’s a good job your a “ mountain goat” 👌🎥🚴♂️
Mountain snail with goat ambitions I think! 😆
@ not only are you doing it more importantly your enjoying it 🚴♂️Just broke the news to my wife that I am sneaking out for a run on Xmas day 😳I won’t milk it but has to be done 👌🚴♂️
great video, have did the climbing feels on the bike?, i am thinking about getting a foldable bike for traveling but i am a bit concerned about climbs and winds, especially with a lot of gear, do you feel a need for ex. having a small crank gear or dual-chainring to make the climbs easier and more enjoyable? :)
Thanks for the comment. It's very subjective but I think the bike feels really stable to ride, so I wouldn't be any more concerned in strong winds than if using any of my other bikes. For me the gearing is okay to about 7-8% climbs, any steeper and I'd probably be struggling/pushing. Although this ride was in the hilly Lake District I mainly use the bike around town and for integrated travel, where the gearing is more than enough. Happy cycling!🙂
Just catching up and enjoyed the run thanks .I do the Cheshire lanes and the harder (for me) runs out of Frodsham into Beeston ect I often think about a run through Manchester as I used to work in the centre in the 90s doing construction but looking what you went through it’s a big no thanks not really the danger just the pure lack of enjoyment.. Stay safe 🚴♂️🎥👌🥇
Thanks for the comment. Enjoyed making this little series of rides but I know what you mean about the city centre riding. A different beast altogether. It's a paradise of quiet lanes around Frodsham and over Beeston and Bunbury way and I must get some Cheshire rides back on the to-do list! 🙂
I am a cyclist, a motorcyclist, a driver and current Bikeability instructor. This is the one thing I want my students to learn above all else. I drum observation into them and have found a few tricks to help them to learn the importance of this. The other skills are very important but, for me, this is the big one.
Thanks for the comment, Donny. Couldn't agree more and I think for those that can get this skill down and committed to muscle memory, to the point where it's an automatic part of how they ride, it'll serve them really well. I'm sure it's quite rewarding being able to teach these kinds of skills (ex-teacher myself, but not cycling!). 🙂
You have some stunning countryside but you also have to graft hard for your pleasure I started a bit late for this work so I do the lanes around Cheshire which seem easier on the knees ..Great video and thanks for posting.🚴♂️🎥💪☔️
Thanks, RB. Yes it's a bit of a slog up to the tops round this way but so far I've always felt it's worth the effort, especially as I'm mostly in 'take your time mode' these days! Spent many years riding the Cheshire lanes and cutting through Tatton Park on my way home from work on the bike. Different but great riding all the same round that way! 🙂
I fitted a handlebar mounted mirror to my E-MTB now. I realised how difficult it is to hear traffic coming up from behind me with wind noise etc. I do over the shoulder life saver checks when I'm making any maneuver.
Thanks for the comment, Adrian. You're right you can't really hear traffic coming up behind you beyond a certain speed and/or with a headwind. I'm scared to try an eMTB as I know I'll want one! Happy cycling! 🙂
Like others, I was disappointed to watch the whole video waiting for a skills lesson, but instead just listened to you repeatedly saying that looking behind you was a good thing to do!
Really want to do that.
It's a great little loop! 🙂
Can someone please put stuff in bags so we can get an idea of what goes in it etc?
I was in my 50's when my new partner who had been a motorbike rider in his youth taught me to head check. i don't understand why this wasn't taught to me when I was learning to drive or doing my bicycle proficiency test as a youngster. i do it all the time now and even on dedicated cycle paths it is important because electric bikes and scooters overtake me with no advance warning..
Yeah I do this from years as a motorbike rider. It's pure habit at this point. On the motorbike I was taught about blind spots, and to glance the mirror into a lifesaver for a maximum visibility check. Without mirrors on the bicycle it's even more necessary, definitely a skill that should be taught before even thinking about riding on a road. Good one!
Great Video. Riding offensively is the only way I feel safe. In a odd way bullying cars to back off. Just a note of protecting yourself....make sure you have adequate insurance. I have BC insurance which I have had to use twice and they were brilliant sorting everything out.
Thanks for the comment. BC - British Cycling?
@onemorecyclist yes British Cycling silver membership. I promise its worth it's weight in Gold!
The best thing u can do for safety is put light coloured fluorescent clothing on lights and camera u haven’t a clue about safety i see to many today riding in black it’s not cool in any way
Yes, turning your head to look behind you while holding your line is a fundamental skill. I have been doing it adequately for over 30 years of road riding. My fellow riders say that I am one of the safer cyclists in the group and the club once gave me the "Best Wheel to Follow" award. So I do take safe riding practices seriously. To that end I have just recently been able to make several changes which have improved my awareness of what is happening behind me on the bike: 1. Just a few months ago I heard a great cue to help keep your line while looking back- right before you turn your head to look drop the shoulder on the opposite side of the shoulder you're looking over an inch or two. That trigger seems to override the subconscious tendency to steer in the direction you are looking. Try it a few times and see how it works for you. 2. During the summer I got prescription cycling glasses with a more wrap around configuration than the glasses and prescription sunglasses I had been using. The extra coverage means that when I look behind me my view isn't obstructed by the frames or rims of my glasses. Much better! 3. Just a couple of weeks ago I got a Garmin Varia radar light. The warnings of overtaking traffic are very reliable and helpful. I understand that the Trek "Car Back" performs similarly well. Check out some TH-cam videos and you'll see some enthusiastic reviews. At $150 USD on sale it wasn't cheap; but much preferable to later regretting not having spent the $$. I have never been able to hear all of the cars approaching me from behind and the ones that are more of a threat due to their speed become audible way too late for me to be "warned." Have fun and safe cycling in the coming year!
I use a wing mirror, I also have the Garmin radar - which is brilliant. Nothing can beat your eyes and ears, but the radar is useful in high winds, when you can't hear anything - your Garmin device lights up, when a vehicle is 140 metres away.
You are wearing a sm 16:00 all flourescent / reflective arm band, clearly acknowledging the importance of visibility. Why then not go the full gilet or jacket or top, maybe bright helmet. There are plenty on the market. I don't understand the modern fashion for wearing black, in your case including the helmet.
Hi Derek. That's a fair observation (and I appreciate you making it without getting rude or finger wagging!). It might sound a bit odd given this video but I don't really get the strong prevalence of black clothing either - when I went into my local shop for a new winter jacket recently (the one in this video) I had in mind something bright orange/yellow (a preference as it's better across varying conditions). Everything offered was black/dark blue and as I've not personally got anything against these colours for daytime riding in good visibility - and it's a great fit/performing piece of kit - they (leggings too!) went in the basket! I have one other thinner black top that has an integrated reflective band, hence the detachable on this one. I honestly don't remember buying the helmet but on reflection - and from reading some of the comments like yours - that was an odd colour choice (there must have been other colours available). It's about to be replaced and for what it's worth it will almost certainly be for a high-vis colour. Thanks for the comment and happy cycling!
I thought about this video today while out on the bike. If I tried to turn and look to the rear, I would surely be in the ditch. At 77, we are not quite as flexible as 27. So, as with the Spitfire and Hurricaine pilots from the Battle of Britain, I use a mirror. Now, I must get a scarf.
I used to ride a Radar (when they 1st came out) but I found it a pain to charge repeatedly, now I use a mirror and good (day) light.. but I always do a look check! Tho radars are good of you like them and I can see the use but you can get around them in cycling
Unfortunately my neck mobility isn't what it was so safer for me to use a mirror on my right hand handle bars. Bad road surfaces are a pain and sometimes not even enough time to check behind before moving out slightly
I use a radar but it doesn't replace the look. I use a radar to let me know a car is coming (sooner than if I'd just listen for it). I find the check established a human contact with the driver. As if to say "I see you. Do you see me? We're in this together." As you said, it doesn't always work. But hey, if you're gonna try to kill me, at least have he courage to look me in the eyes while you do it.
Tried a couple of bar end mirrors and have settled on the Cat Eye version. It is literally a life saver and I now wouldn't ride without it. Even took it with me this year to Mallorca to install on the hire bike. You should definitely consider one - particularly as twisting as you age becomes more difficult. Looking down as a vehicle passes (to check there's not another)becomes second nature.
Good video but your all in black 😮
Thanks, Joan. I don't mind the colour (amongst others!) for daytime riding in good visibility but appreciate it's not a choice others would make. Happy cycling!
