The Republic of Texas, upon gaining independence from Mexico in 1836 also used a variation of the Bonnie Blue Flag as their first national flag, called the Burnett Flag.
Honestly, on paper, the Confederacy sounds incredibly patriotic and "rebellious" in that thick American way, fighting for the rights of their own property and rights to not be interfered by strangling state policies. Unfortunately, in practice, 90% of why the South even rose up was to defend slavery.
It wasnt even that ‘reasonable”- there was no serious effort to ban or curtail slavery in slave stats-in deed dread Scott’s as still law-ie slaves had to be returned to their owner even if found of free soil. What the south was pissed bout was slavery was NOT going to be extended and slaves states would eventually;l;y no longer have a stranglehold on congress esp the senate. Of course you cna argue that evetaully the non slave states would try to ban slavery, but the south was also over represented on Scott’s. Was such a speculative and inchoate issue, clearly not operative for 50 or more years, worth. Teh Southwire anted to SELL its sales to new slave states-that was a huge industry in places liek VA where teh s’il was getting horribly depleted by tobacco and cotton estates.
they were mad it wouldn’t extend to new states NOT because they just loved slavery, but because a slave stats meant more representation in Congress. In reality, the South attempted to secede in 1833 as well because the oppression of the federal government and the north. The North, being industrialized and not needing slaves, refused to sell products to the South for anywhere near reasonable prices which forced the South to import from Europe. The federal government passed 40-50% tariffs which the South nearly seceded for. After threats and negotiations, they finally lowered it. Tariffs are especially evil since not only did the South import necessary things from Europe, but Europe enacted counter tariffs, which hurt the southern economy more bc all its money came from cotton and tobacco exports (slavery was so stupid it held them back and they didn’t realize it). Fast forward to Lincoln, he promised to raise 55% tariffs, which the South was enraged by! It was a continuation of decades of oppression of the South by the North. The South felt that the bankers and money interests of the North took over the original agreement of the states. Having slavery spread to new states meant they would have the same policy interests and thus vote with them in Congress. It is noticeable that the war started in Ft Sumter, which was a port city. The South seceded and declared it wouldn’t pay the tariffs, so Lincoln sent federal agents to port cities like Sumter, Savannah, etc to enforce that they did. When the federal agents tried to force the Southerners in Sumter to pay tariffs on the imports, they fired on them. Over in the North, weeks before this, Ohio proposed a 13th amendment which would have enshrined slavery into the constitution. Illinois, Ohio, Virginia, Maryland, Rhode Island, and Kentucky all ratified it. Lincoln even expressed support for it. It was a last ditch effort by the North to appeal to the South’s wishes to keep slavery by enshrining it in the constitution to prevent secession. However, ratification voting stopped after Sumter and the North invaded. Showing that while the slavery was very important to the South, it was NOT the reason they seceded. Rather it was decades of oppression. Just think, colonists declared independence for 3% tax. Meanwhile the federal government enacted nonsense agricultural taxes and a 55% tariff. That’s why southerners called it the Second War of American Independence
