Could you imagine being the sole survivor on Otis Redding’s plane? He said that he could hear their screams as they were engulfed by the lake.

Hey... you missed Glenn Miller! December 15, 1944 his airplane vanished somewhere over the English Channel on it's way to France. He had volunteered to join the Army in 1944 to entertain the troops and bring a piece of home to them while they were overseas... the troops had come to love his music. He was given the rank of Captain and had actually changed the cadence music form standard military marching band to his more up-lifting Big Band style! He was awarded the Bronze Star after his death. He wrote classics such as Pennsylvania 6 5000, Moonlight Serenade, and In The Mood, as well as MANY others!

You missed Jim Reeves. He was piloting a small aircraft with just him and his manager on board. There were thunderstorms in the area and Jim was not certified to fly on instruments alone. The control tower directed him to arrive at the airport by a way he was unfamiliar with because of the storm. Instead Jim decided to take his usual route and he flew right into the worst part of the storm. It is believed that Jim suffered from spatial disorientation because he couldn’t see the ground and as a result, he thought he had the plane climbing when in fact it was headed straight into the ground at 200 mph in a wooded area near Nashville. It took them a couple of days to find the crash site. Both men died instantly upon impact. This was right around July 31,1964, give or take a couple of days. I believe he was 40.

Worst part of the “day the music died” was the last conversation Buddy and Waylon.
Buddy told Waylon “I hope you freeze your ass off on the bus.”

Survivor’s guilt. Waylon was originally supposed to be on that plane, but he gave up his seat to The Big Bopper. That was survivor’s guilt #1. Survivor’s guilt # 2 was the last words spoken between Buddy and Waylon. Buddy said “I hope your ass freezes on the bus.” And Waylon said “Well, I hope your ol’ plane crashes.”

I was at the Stevie Ray Vaughn show. Their encore was "Sweet Home Chicago". It took so long to get out of the parking lot afterwards, partially due to the fog. The fog was so close to the ground, you couldn't see more than one car ahead of you, and the staff had to stand with flashlights and other handheld lights to help people out of the lot. I got a call super early the next day from my friend telling me Stevie had been killed, but they had crashed far enough away that none of us had seen or heard anything. Timothy Douglas - Yeah, Carole Lombard and her mom and everyone else who was on the plane. It was a commercial plane - TWA, which went out of business in the ‘80’s, maybe? It wasn’t a private plane. It crashed right splat into the side of a mountain. Huge fireball. Everyone died on impact. Carole’s remains were so burnt up that they had to identify her by some jewelry she was wearing that Clark Gable had given her. The terrain was so rugged they could only drive part way up. They had to hike and use donkeys to bring the bodies down. Recovery took 2 days. Clark Gable waited in a bar in a tiny town kind of close to the crash site. He sat at the bar drinking and smoking cigars. There are still cigar burns on the bar from when he fell asleep while smoking. The wreckage is still there. Because of the rugged terrain, they couldn’t pick it all up. I’m sure it has been looted many times. Probably all that’s left are pieces too big and heavy to be carried off by people or donkeys. But there is still quite a lot there.

@@garycarpenter2980 - There are definitely still plane parts there. By now the ones that are left are probably too big and heavy to move.
There are videos of people climbing around up there and maybe bringing smaller pieces of the plane with them. Search “Carole Lombard plane crash site”.
I’m not surprised that the crash site is haunted. This is a perfect recipe for a haunting. One second everything is fine. The next they crash into the side of a mountain making a huge fireball that could be seen for miles. Everyone instantly dies on impact with no forewarning. Sudden unexpected loss of life can cause hauntings.
It’s very tragic. Carole was the love of Clark Gable’s life and in an instant she was gone. He married again, twice I think. His last wife who was married to him when he died was very respectful of Carole’s memory. Clark’s wish was to be buried next to Carole and that’s what his wife had done.

I've read several detailed reports about the 1959 tragedy that took the lives of Valens, Holly and Richardson. Several have pointed out that the pilot was undertained in instrument flying, and that's likely true. But I've taken note of the fact that the pilot DID know what he was doing, and WAS skilled enough. The directional angle of the crash scene debris field shows that the plane was not going in the direction of the north destination. This means that, as indicated in one of the reports, the pilot was turning away, and back to the airport likely because the snowy storm frontal factor wasn't to be tolerant of flying ANY light/small plane without severe turbulance. That pilot was willing to do this, when many pilots didn't have the confidence nor willingness to fly in those conditions. The pilot did the correct thing, but likely became spacially disoriented (down-for-up) in the more-than-a-light snowfall. Also, they took off after midnight in the darkness. Truly a sad stroy. R.I.P Ricardo "Richie" Valens (Valuenzuela). R.I.P "Buddy" Holly. R.I.P "Big Bopper" J. P. Richardson. Also: R. I.P brave pilot (I've left his name off due to the reports balming him for the cause of this tragedy). A VERY strong underlying cause of the crash was, as Mr. Enrique Gonzalez has noted in his comment here, piots call it "Get-there-itis". Good work, history reporters! Thank you.

What really sucks is that most plane crashes are caused by lapses in judgement. Even in most deadly crashes with mechanical failure involved, usually the pilots/ATC didn't react correctly. It happens. Humans aren't perfect, but we need em.
That being said, what pisses me off most is when people could have prevented it, but either chose not to, or used the "there's no rule against it" excuse. Preemptive Mandates would fix most human error scenarios, but one of those human errors is a lack of 20/20 foresight.

During the accident, all the hydraulics were disabled while the vertical stabiliser was almost entirely gone. During the radio call with Yokoto Air Base, the captain addressed the condition of the aircraft as "uncontroll(able)". The pilots eventually managed to keep the severely damaged aircraft in the sky for 32 minutes before the crush, and would probably made it to achieve the emergency landing if the poor weather didn't kick in at the last minute. The top pilots later tested on the simulator for the same scenario all failed to break the 32-minute record. The Japanese Self-Defense Force assigned for rescue task ought to be blamed through for the fact that more passengers could have survived if they didn't delay the rescue.

No it didn't, that was a theory put forth that was disproven, most likely what killed Miller was a defective carburetor heater on his plane that caused the carburetor to ice up and the engine shut down.
There was a scandal in the USAAF that a General got caught up in where he was taking bribe money from Curtiss Wright to approve the shipment of defective parts so they could meet their wartime quota and not face fines, when it was discovered that some of the carb heaters were defective that had been shipped to the ETO the good ones were sent to front line units for use in bombers that absolutely needed them due to the high altitude missions they were flying, secondary aircraft like the one he was being flown on that had the same Curtiss Wright engine had to operate without them, weather records show that the conditions over the channel that day turned into the kind that were perfect for freezing an aircraft carb.

I've taken note of the causes of airplane crashes. A very high percentage of the pilots who died flying themselves (many were alone) in their private planes, did have a too strong of a desire to get to where they WANTED to go FAST and right now. Kobe Briant's decision to helicopter travel was due to the relatively high volumne of car/vehicle traffic in L. A. (As Mr. Gonzales has written here, that pilots call this "Get-there-itis"). That helicopter pilot was VERY skilled (a copter instructor). Any pilot could have made the same mistake that he did. The Sikorsky copter was modern and a good one, the problem was that it was not equipted with a ground-proxmity warning sensor. I've taken note of, and repeat the comments of other people, in various of the air crashe reports: Avoid flying on small planes. Large airliners ARE NOT capable of doing much emergency action(s) below 500 ft. of altitude, such that if they have a problem, it's trouble bigtime. Avoid flying anywhere in winter conditions. Night flying, even in good weather, IS risky. When anyone flies, they are putting their lives into the hands of other people, mostly skilled pilots. But these skilled pilots aren't superstars. Fying IS risky. One of my uncles and various people, such as John Madden just won't fly AT ALL. Best to flap your arms occasionally, and feel like a bird. At least you'll be alive. Auto, busses and passenger trains work just fine.
