What It Was Like to Be In a Presidential Nuclear War Bunker

  • The US government seems to know far too much about its citizens, so it's disturbing to realize how little citizens know about the governing body. Learning what happens inside presidential bunkers and where the president would go during a nuclear attack is useful information, though.
These bunkers were built in the middle of the 20th century, largely as a response to the mounting nuclear panic that accompanied the Cold War. Raven Rock, built in 1951, was one of the predominant shelters. From the underground city at the Raven Rock Mountain Complex in Pennsylvania, to the Greenbrier Bunker that's hidden in plain sight under a luxury resort in West Virginia, to the top-secret NORAD lair at Cheyenne Mountain in Colorado, these bunkers are incredibly secure.

My grandfather worked for AT&T & was given a security clearance to help with wiring the Greenbriar bunker. He never discussed it since he took an oath of secrecy & the project was classified as Top Secret until the bunker was officially declassified. Once he could talk about it he told us how there was a switchboard for incoming calls where an operator answered the calls a certain way depending on which line lit up. One line would be answered as AT&T, another line would be answered as Greenbriar Hotel, ect. all while being operated from the same operator & switchboard.
My dad told me how he accompanied my grandfather on a different occasion to a job site where he needed to pick something up. There was a building the size of a shed room at the edge of a field that the went into. They descended down a spiral staircase & at the bottom was a larger area in which there was a pretty large blast door that was opened & led down a long hallway. He had to stay there at the doors while my grandfather went & did whatever it was that he needed to do. So there are a lot of places in which things aren't what they appear to be! I can only imagine what's out there now with all of the technology we currently have.

There is no way you are going to survive living in a post-atomic warfare world unless you are previously a die-hard fan of outdoor living with minimum items. I grew up in Roanoke, Virginia, a city less than 100 miles south of Greenbrier. During the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 I told my brother that I wasn't afraid of Russian missiles because there wasn't anything within 200 miles worth bombing. He told me that I should worry there was a bunker for government officials just north of Roanoke. Apparently this big national secret was well known amongst 8th graders in a nearby small southern city.

And this is why they believe that they are better than everyone else. This should not be allowed. They have wasted untold Billions to build these. And countless Billions more to maintain them. And they never once have been used.
How many other locations are there that we don't know about ? It doesn't really cost $5,000 for a hammer or $1 million dollars for a toilet seat on a space shuttle. That money is being diverted for more places like these.

There’s a good chance most people wouldn’t go to the bunker that are allowed in or that they’d try to bring their families and upon refusal of entry would most likely not go down willingly. For these super bunkers to work they need to include room for family members for them to be effective. Even with anti depressants I don’t imagine you’d be very mentally fit if your children and wife just died in a nuclear holocaust.

I doubt in the event of a nuclear attack that their would be enough time to get anyone to the bunkers. Our government doesn't handle disasters well, example: Hurricane Katrina. What's likely to happen is that we will all be vaporized and the bunkers will be empty and covered in dust. I think the whole duck and cover commercials during the cold war was stupid, teaching kids that they can survive a nuclear attack by hiding under a table or blanket. Should've taught them to put their heads between their knees and kiss their ass goodbye.

In my US public grammar school 1970s we still had regular "civil defense" drills where we had to file out of class & sit in the hallway facing the wall crouched over with hands over our necks. As I recall that practice ended after 3rd grade, & I think most of us kids knew silly, but didn't mind as somewhat entertaining :-)

Quite a few years ago, in the late 70s, I was able to tour the SAC underground in Omaha, NE. My father-in-law was a Lt. Colonel at the time and worked at SAC. It was very interesting, but nothing like you see in the movies.
They do have the big screens on the wall, but the room itself was actually quite small. We were in a gallery above the main floor where the General in charge would direct operations. You have a good view from the gallery so I could see why the General would be up there. Almost all the consoles were covered though so you could not see what function they served. They have a bunch of telephones that connected directly to various installations around the world. They picked up one and it connected to a base in Alaska. They have one phone that connects directly to the Whitehouse but it wasn't red sadly. The thing that really struck me the number of military police everywhere. Not sure if that was normal or because we were down there.
I asked the guide what would happen if they had an emergency while we were down in the bunker. He said we would be escorted to a room and locked in, for our own safety. :)

Am I the only one wondering why they weren’t able to bring their families to the first bunker? During the time that this would have been in use, women were far and few holding high government positions. If they did survive and continued to live, wouldn’t they want women/children to live rebuild and continue America? I mean it would die out with only men once the rest of the country is gone.
