stardustgirl they broke up several years ago, they didn’t even speak afterwards. They didn’t even accept they’re Grammy together afterwards, whatever really happened was bad, very bad.
It really is a shame they couldn't coexist artistically. They had amazing chemistry and such incredibly haunting harmony. Quite simply one of the most talented and special duos I've ever seen. I love their time together, the amazing music they gifted the world with, and really really miss them.
Yeah, perfect example of a special moment with someone and how they were able to share it with so many of us to make it more special. We all compromise in some way, shape, or form until we cant any longer. The genius is rising to the occasion to part ways with class. They basically said even a successful music career cannot mend this break they have. I think people cannot understand that and that's why people have to make it so scandalous by saying it was an affair or something deceitful.
A part of me cannot believe they released this song. It is so insanely intimate and seems to literally tell their whole story. I can’t believe they would want this out there.
Joy has said in more than one interview that online rumors and speculation, such as this comment, were a key part of their break-up. The pressure on their marriages was made worse, on top of the difficult touring schedules could impose. I miss them together, too.
I read on Reddit from someone claiming they knew them in person was because Joy felt overshadowed by JP and felt heldback, wanted to go solo, but JP wanted to continue being a duo as it was successful compared to his solo years. Different ambitions, lots of bitterness, and ended up splitting. Also the person claimed the whole being together was an act they enjoyed, their spouses knew of the act too.
@@Vanadahthis doesn’t make much sense, Joy should’ve been grateful for the success of the group since she wasn’t widely known prior to this duo either. Not sure I believe that she would want to go solo so early on in their success.
How can you listen to their music and admire them as artists and think that was hate? There's no question that these two fell in love. As a musician, I can tell you that the intimacy of singing together is incredible and I have had to stop singing with some because of the confusion that results. Whether or not they went too far, they are breaking up for their families, and it's hard enough without having to look at each other. My heart breaks for them, and for all fans. It's not hate- it's loss.
"I miss the way you wanted me when I was staying just out of your reach...begging for the slightest touch, oh you couldn't get enough" powerful lyrics that capture the emotion completely
While the music is phenomenal, the video makes me so very sad. You can feel the tension between them. This isn't acting for the video. You can see the true emotion in their eyes. If you look at all of their earlier recordings the dynamics between them were completely different than what is presented here. They would smile at each other, they would interact playfully, there was a twinkle in their eyes, they actually LIKED each other. Clearly in this video stress and discord is abundant and sadly you can see the broken bond. So terribly sad that such an amazing duo had to part ways. But I want to thank them for what they have given us, it was their legacy in their time. God Bless them both for whatever the future holds.
so true. you can feel the tension in the room with them...it almost brought me to tears for them. you can tell how real and raw these words and their emotions were still for them while making this video. i don't know how they did it. i would love to meet them in person. they seem like very strong people, it takes a very strong person to sing that openly for the sake of the music and still giving it all the passion of your soul like they do. amazingly beautiful.
I think that may have been the tip of the iceberg, but I think it was more complex than that, way more. Something that is between them, that I'm sure we will never know. I do recall Joy singing as a guest lately. Wasn't half bad. But JP, lord that man, listening to him sing live Tip of my tongue from New Orleans, my world stops and goes on a musical not journey when he sings and plays guitar.

I was fortunate to see them on the night they broke up. The best concert I have ever been to and a real shock to wake up the next morning and read they had broken up. Sad.
Their looks at each other. It is apparent that this song was written about their relationship with each other. There was either an affair or near affair. This song screams it. And the tension, you could cut it with a knife.
Their sound is phenomenal and I dropped when I found out they weren't married to each other. The chemistry just seemed there but I hope they both are okay. Being a band, they must have a part of their identity associated with each other. Respect their decision and if it was about his marriage than I applaud you both.
Beautiful. I fell in love with this when I saw the first "Ravenswood" promo and looked it up immediately. Reminds me of "Rumors" era Fleetwood Mac, with Christine MacVie singing. I think this guy looks more like Baelfire/Neal on "Once Upon A Time" than Johnny Depp. As for Depp, yes he is a musician, and like Reuben Blades and Antonio Banderas, wrote his own theme for Robert Rodriguez's soundtrack to "Once Upon a Time in Mexico".
I think this is the most emotional video I have seen, knowing the story, and how different their attitudes are displayed here than in earlier ones. The part where she is scribbling out part of "I wish that I had never seen your face" on the lyric sheet.... It just adds to it all. It's so bittersweet, the ending of this duo. What was, what could never be.

I never meant to get us in this deep I never meant for this to mean a thing Oh, I wish you were the one Wish you were the one that got away I got caught up by the chase And you got high on every little game I wish you were the one Wish you were the one that got away Oh, if I could go back in time When you only held me in my mind Just a longing gone without a trace Oh, I wish I'd never ever seen your face I wish you were the one Wish you were the one that got away I miss the way you wanted me When I was staying just out of your reach Begging for the slightest touch Ooh, you couldn't get enough, mmm Oh, if I could go back in time When you only held me in my mind Just a longing gone without a trace Oh, I wish I'd never ever seen your face I wish you were the one Wish you were the one that got away Got away from me Got away from me Before anybody has to bleed Oh, if I could go back in time When you only held me in my mind Just a longing gone without a trace Oh, I wish I'd never ever seen your face I wish you were the one I wish you were the one Oh, I wish you were the one I wish you were the one that got away
I’d never read the lyrics, and I do have to say, it could easily be describing why they broke up. It may have gone from “holding them in their mind”, to actually holding them...and in turn, they now have to “bleed” and break up
@@devonpeters9458 I have no idea if this person was telling the truth or not in comments! So many nights and tears with this song. The best duo singers I ever heard, so pity they will never come to my country as "The Civil Wars". Regards from Poland.
Their lyrically quality is amazing: “I miss the way you wanted me When I was staying just out of your reach” "Oh, if I could go back in time, when you only held me in my mind Just a longing, gone without a trace"
If they are just "acting" as they have implied for the video, then they are not only amazing vocalists...but also should consider a career in acting lol Their body language and the way they look into eachothers eyes an pull each other in ...The real reason for the split was that the two of them are married with families....and before it had gone too far (if it already hadn't) they called the whole thing off .I'm sure there was a strong urging from each of their spouses as well on the subject as well, you would have to be blind not to see what was happening here...really a shame, they made truly beautiful music together..
Such a hybrid of great genres. It really is hard to put on any other artist after hearing these 2. It's like, wow...something great is going down here. Finally!
+geo linkin Check out Gregory Alan Isakov, The Stable Song or Moon Song, similar music to this....he is my other favorite folk/country/Americana singer or group besides the Civil Wars

What these two had cannot be described in words.. the closest thing that comes to mind is like 2 stars on opposite sides of the universe singin in Unison, creating a link throughout the entire universe...
This video is so beautiful but eerie. I’m honestly surprised they released it. The nature of the song perfectly reflects what is apparent in the video. The tension between them is crazy and there is an apparent rift between them as well. Perhaps the two of them really do wish they were the “one who got away” 😥😥
Seriously how can anyone DISLIKE this video, this song, this band!?!?! It blows my mind that there are people who can't see the magic that happened here, even with how they ended...
Omg.. this is one of my favorite groups/bands to listen to, especially if I'm in a certain state of mind where my head gets full of thoughts and I can't think of one thing at a time. The Civil Wars made some of the best folk music I've heard and love so much. I don't know very many folk musicians, but I'm glad I know this group. Joy Williams and John Paul White were a phenomenal duo that I find is unmatched to any other pair. Their voices harmonized so perfectly it almost felt like it was surreal. When I first learned last year that they had split up, I was shocked. Like all the other people who enjoyed the music they managed to release, I wanted to know why. But unfortunately, in a world where not all questions can be answered, this was one of those questions. At least, not a comfirmed answer anyway. This video, however, shows their REAL feelings, their true, legitimate feelings. It is clear that however much they didnt want to, they tried their hardest to put up with each other. Joy looked very stressed, anxious, and teary-eyed, while John looking anxious as well, was less emotional. You could tell by his posture and expression he was in a way feeling tense, uneasy, and hesitant. There is no acting, pretending, or any sort of fake emotion in this video. After all, this is from their actual Studio recording. The pair truly were battling each other's prescence as if it was 1863, not only for themselves, but for all the people who cherished their music. Although very unfortunate, the bond between them had taken its beatings for long enough, and they split. Both are still making music, and according to many articles and reports and such, the separation is "permanent". It truly is a shame, their voices were so beautiful together. But some things are never meant to last. We can only move forward, and listen to what they managed to put out for their fans. The Civil Wars truly had a harsh battle, but in the end, it was a fight not meant to be won.

2024 & I still get chills. Where are they now? 🥹
These two are such a tragic love story. With only beautiful music to leave a trace of what they were ...or could have been together.
I'm yet another Ravenswood fan that fell in love with this song. It's very beautiful.
We love the Civil Wars! Such a beautiful, haunting sound
His eyes...so calm, yet intense.
5 years later my heart still stings itself at how painful this is
I really miss the Civil Wars! They were brilliant together and I feel every song of theirs in my soul...
I was with my significant other for 18 yrs. This song perfectly describes us.I don't think I'll EVER stop loving him although we weren't good for each other. Dec.6 Will be 3 yrs. since he passed away. I miss him so bad and this song is something I have wanted to put on paper. y'all are awesome together. Great song. LOVE yall. AT least now I can just fall apart and cry myself asleep. If I'm lucky or blessed.
Ah this makes me sad. Reading this on Dec 6. I hope your heart finds peace ❤️
this brought me to tears
I am so sorry Cindy Flanders
I miss them so much!!!!!
3 years and it still breaks my heart that they are apart. I had such a strong faith in their chemistry, love, whatever you call it. They obviously belong to each other.
Damla Hoca fucking preach, I'm over here crying
Ravenswood brought me here
still listening in 2024 and they are just as good now as the first time I heard them live in SLC Utah at the gray whale record store near the U with line 5 other people.
Best vocals ever :)
I’m still watching and loving it life the first time….so many years ago
Ooops…went too fast…life=like
I never meant to get us in this deep
I never meant for this to mean a thing
Oh, I wish you were the one
Wish you were the one that got away
I got caught up by the chase
And you got high on every little game
I wish you were the one
Wish you were the one that got away
Oh, if I could go back in time
When you only held me in my mind
Just a longing gone without a trace
Oh, I wish I'd never ever seen your face
I wish you were the one
Wish you were the one that got away
I miss the way you wanted me
When I was staying just out of your reach
Begging for the slightest touch
Ooh, you couldn't get enough, mmm
Oh, if I could go back in time
When you only held me in my mind
Just a longing gone without a trace
Oh, I wish I'd never ever seen your face
I wish you were the one
Wish you were the one that got away
Got away from me
Got away from me
Before anybody has to bleed
Oh, if I could go back in time
When you only held me in my mind
Just a longing gone without a trace
Oh, I wish I'd never ever seen your face
I wish you were the one
I wish you were the one
Oh, I wish you were the one
I wish you were the one that got away
thank you c:
Gizem DUMAN thank you 😎
I'm not crying! Your crying!
But a man said he worked with John and Joy for years, and though they tried very hard to keep the relationship plutonic, it grew into something neither one of them had expected, they couldn't stay away from each other, always working together, it made that an impossible feat to have more distance! They still loved there families, and decided to part ways! But deep down I can't help but feel, they both wanted to stay together but couldn't! Joy's husband has divorced her , but John got to keep his family! Who really knows what happened!
Was a pleasure sharing a stage with Joy Williams for the Paul Simon benefit!!
this video is soooo hard to watch. something broke with them. we can only speculate what. the tension. damn... I miss them together. the music was beautiful. I always used to say that I want a man to look at me the way he looked at her... then I found out they were married... to other people😩😩😩
+Jace smith yup.....I believe he is in love with her and willing to risk everything to be with her but she would not leave her husband....she is too scared of what people would think of her if she did that.....her Christian upbringing makes her like that.....but they really do look awesome together,, better than the way they look with each other's spouses, and make great music together too
i always thought it was the other way around, considering what happened as soon as they called it quits.
Emma Mcdowall what happened?
she mentioned in an article about a year ago that she wanted one thing, and he didnt want that. Then after they broke up, I saw something about how he went home to his wife and refused to talk to anyone. I also think she tried to talk to him, but they no longer speak to each other.
wait, so they were having an affair? wow!Emma Mcdowall
#THECIVILWARS #THECIVILWARS #JoyWilliams #JohnPaulWhite aka #TheCivilWars. You two made the most illustrious music ever. True pleasure to listen to it 😄👍👍👍🎻🎸🥁🎹🎸❤️🧡💜
watching this back is almost painful, it seems now so evident in their emotions that things had fallen apart. almost eerie to watch this knowing that they broke up shortly after. Civil Wars, we miss you.
2021 and this is still one of the best groups.
So many nights and tears with this song.
The best duo singers I ever heard, so pity they will never come to my country as "The Civil Wars".
Regards from Poland.
Their lyrically quality is amazing:
“I miss the way you wanted me
When I was staying just out of your reach”
"Oh, if I could go back in time, when you only held me in my mind
Just a longing, gone without a trace"
"I never meant to get us in this deep, I never meant for this to mean a thing" I know what youre saying random person
ohhh I knew I recognized this from somewhere... Ravenswood :)
Love this song
I saw them twice back when they were touring Barton Hollow. Most beautiful shows of my life. 🖤
2024...still love them
Such a hybrid of great genres. It really is hard to put on any other artist after hearing these 2. It's like, wow...something great is going down here. Finally!
Something was going great.. so sad they broke up the duo..
+geo linkin Check out Gregory Alan Isakov, The Stable Song or Moon Song, similar music to this....he is my other favorite folk/country/Americana singer or group besides the Civil Wars
thanks for the tip. :)
It's the first time I listen to this, I'm just like "oh gosh that is awesome", it's not my kind of music but this is so powerful, and her voice is beautiful *.*
2021 and these guys still blow my mind everytime.. Gone but not forgotten!
The raw emotion in this song, the chemistry! Cant believe they were never together
It still hurts..and will always hurt.
One of the most amazing poems/ songs ever.
Their chemistry is undeniable
RIP the civil wars - one of my favourite musical groups ever
So love their harmony and magnetism! Wish they would get back together!
I love seeing people sing with passion. With intensity. It's stunning to witness.
You can't convince me this song isn't them singing about eachother...
This studio version is so raw and beautiful but so filled with sorrow and resentment at the same time.
this song, this video, it all just breaks my heart
This song is perfect for Autumn. Coming back every year.
💔 chills. such a powerful display of bitter emotion.
Seriously how can anyone DISLIKE this video, this song, this band!?!?! It blows my mind that there are people who can't see the magic that happened here, even with how they ended...
Sirius Black can sing. Wow
Thought it was Johnny Depp!
Fisher Lanham Shut up, it's Sirius. :3
😂😂👏👏👏😂😂😂😂😂😂😂👏👏👏
Nope he´s a fat version of Mikael Akerfeldt
Your comment gave me life 😂😂😂
2017 and I am still brokenhearted that this duo didn't last.
My favorite The Civil Wars song
this song seriously gives me goose bumps everytime i hear this.
Omg.. this is one of my favorite groups/bands to listen to, especially if I'm in a certain state of mind where my head gets full of thoughts and I can't think of one thing at a time.
This video still hurts me until now.
This popped in my head I forgot how good it is ❤
❤❤❤Years later and I'm still regretting not seeing them live. 😢😢😢
Their voices were magic together!
This song has so much emotion and tension!
