Incredibly tight sound on this performance, especially with the Hammond Organ mixed in. I was 16 when this came out and I was floored. A truly timeless song.
Thank you for taking the time to upload seemingly every late night musical performance from the era of the Clinton Administration! You obviously used high quality tapes, a great rig, and a good rendering program. I know what a complete pain in the butt it is to transfer old VHS tapes onto the computer, so thank you so much for your invaluable archive and for taking such good care of your tapes over the years...
My pleasure! The results are due to having had good advice at the time about getting a hi-fi stereo recorder [dual head], and the tapes varied, depending on price. Turns out that the best results were on the TDK tapes, IMO. After researching things a bit - and being limited by budget concerns - I ended up getting the Eye-TV Plus encoder for the analog to digital conversion, and then using Handbrake for the final compression, which is what you see here. Yes, real-time transfers take a long time, but it's the only way to "keep" my library now..... Hadn't give a thought about the fact that many of these performances were done during the Clinton years, until you mentioned it - I guess those were relatively happier times. Thanks, again, for the note of appreciation, and nice to know someone understands the work involved :)
Heard it on American Pie and learned it on the guitar and still play and sing it. This song fucking rocks man. Shame nobody else seems to know about it! This guy has serious energy and soul, and the jam is very unique. Hope wherever James is they’re rocking it.
In 89' they came out with SIT DOWN...By far my favorite song from them... WHAT FOR my Second favorite.... But LAID is An amazing song as well... STILL SOUNDS CLASS!! 👍
i think it's about an unhealthy relationship. she's domineering, controlling, and bad for him in every way. but whenever he tries to break it off she makes him love her again, and he goes crazy when she's not around. the melody and the vocals just make it sound haunting and creepy and at the same time beautiful, just like the relationship the song describes.
…you should here the slow version he played. Theres a pause between “you are driving me crazy” and then. “When are you coming home?!” That shows how doomed he is!!!
Hold up just a goddamn second here......this dude's "dancing" is probably in the top 2 things I have viewed on a computer screen. These savage moves say idgf about anything. Now watch me.
Wonderful performance. Fell in love with this band in university over 30 years ago. While Tim gives off a Ben Kingsley / Breaking Bad vibe visually these days, his vocals haven’t changed one bit. ❤
It's one of those songs that's all chorus going round and around. Like 'I was made to love her' and 'I don't know why I love you' by Stevie Wonder, where the only place to go is more and more intense and unhinged.
Still listening to this awesome song & band in 2024!! ❤ 🦘
hell yeah!
Me 2
Oh yes!
You gotdam rite beautiful!

Holyshit what an absolutely amazing live performance for any song
This is studio quality and they were able to belt it out live on TV
it's perfect
sounds so fucking good@@Chiron952
What incredible talent. Shame they weren’t around during the classic rock period.
Really could not have put it any way better than you have..
I saw them in 2023, and his voice is still amazing!! (And the wild dancing!)
This many years later and this song pops into my head. It is a hilariously underated spectacular jam.
Same bro. Randomly popped into my head. This song can cheer people up.
What’s hilarious about it. It’s a 90’s classic.
@@oregonchris8457 The words. It's really witty. Ofc it's a classic, being funny doesn't take that away
Here in 2023, WXRT in Chicago still plays this from time to time. great stuff
Agreed.
Dancing like nobody is watching is the only way to dance, fantastic song and performance
Absofuckinglutely, love his dancing
Ooh Doris! Flop the limp wristed hand down.
How James haven't ruled the music world for decades still has me scratching my head. Incredible band.
Came for the high notes stayed for the dance moves.
Not the ‘90s hair and hoop in the ear? 😂
"Medication Time!!!!".
Fantastic
Great song, great band. I bloody loved music in the 90’s.
lol word ✊
One of the most infectious grooves ever written. And Tim booth has still got it 30 years later 😍
I miss the 90s
Me to
I miss them too!😢
I'm watching this in 2023. It's hard to believe it's the same man.
Yah he turned into American history X later on in life
My 17 year old son just saw them live at Lytham Festival, I was at school when this was a hit, timeless!
Lytham? Yeah, who needs American TV. That's right where it's at, not.
Possibly the greatest dancing on jay leno....ever
one of the best bands of all time.
I'm still loving this in 2024!
Lo Amo lo Amo lo Amo .!!!
The way he dances at the end reminds me of the feeling i used to get when i was 8 or 9 and it was Friday afterschool, home time :) !!!

What I was listening to at age17.
Young young 13 myself.

It's a British anthem. If you're aged 40-60 you've been smashed at a wedding dancing to this

Wow...nice tv performance.... I love James, I love Laid
Met Jim Glennie at South by many years back. Fantastic guy. Tim's dance in this is a tribute to fellow Mancunian Ian Curtis.
I'm glad you mentioned that, it's a huge nod to Ian
From Macclesfield not Manchester
I never knew that Tim Booth moved in that way in memory of Ian Curtis I could watch both all night
.T.Y.
Neither Tim Booth nor Ian Curtis are Mancunian. Tim is from Bradford (West Yorkshire) Ian was from Macclesfield (Cheshire)
Holy shit, I can't believe this was 26 years go. I loved this song when it came out, still love it.
If this comment is truly 1 month old then your math is off...recount!

@@sureshot8399 🥳🥳🥳🥳🙌🙌🙌🙌😊
Perfect performance. WOW!!!!
This one time - at band camp, I was listening to this
What an incredible 1960s nod and influence in the sound of this song. Bloody brilliant.
This performance, emotionally searing, utterly personal yet universal, sums up the post-postmodern era!
So good that this is fair dinkum, not mimed as so many tv band performances were. A great song, a great performance and a great post.
OMG!!
Jay mentioned our beloved Huntridge Theater here in Vegas❣️❣️❣️❣️
God we need The Huntridge back up & running😿
Who's watching this in 2024?
I remember when this came out....I was 30.....now I'm 60...and I still love the song!

Dancing like a happy Ian Curtis
Underrated comment.
Similar part of England too.
their first gig was at The Hacienda and they were from Manchester so most likely they were aware of Joy Division
I loved James in 1995 so much a their songs since never gets old.

It's actually about having sex with a beautiful woman and they get a bit too loud coz she rides him to climax

It’s definitely a catchy tune, but when I see the singer I can’t help think, “Warriors, come out to playyyeee” 🤷🏻♂️
Sounds just like the record. Awesome.
