I mostly use a compression sustainer for my single coils. It gives them some of the, well, compression and sustain a humbucker has while still keeping the brightness. I think it is most noticeable on single notes and leads.

Thanks Ted!! I have one in the app that comes with my amp, but I could never dial it in right - this really helped. I guess it's a matter of turning knobs and see what comes out - but this puts me in a better ballpark. I know when I messed with it on my semi-hollowbody - that wasn't fun. But I'm getting rid of that guitar anyway lol.

My Epiphone without compression gives me a lot of sustain already. When I add compression, it can get into that Boston More Than a Feeling compression that goes for days. Keep tweaking and you'll find what you like in your chain pretty quick. Add a delay pedal and your reverb may be retired. Maybe, as some prefer the reverb tones to delay. You're right about a guitar sounding as flat as a board after hearing what these pedals can do.

Don't know much about Kokko brand but they seem pretty good quality wise. I reviewed a mini Kokko drive a while back and it was great!
So think of a compressor as the floor and the ceiling to your guitar's sound / tonal range. You can adjust a compressor so that the floor and the ceiling are closer together... Tighter so to speak. It will make it so that weaker notes or chords are brought up, and louder ones are compressed as to not over power. So chording and soloing sound somewhat fuller and smoother so to speak. But too much compressor (bringing the floor and the ceiling too close together) will make it so that you no longer have dynamics in your playing. Even soft picking will be emphasized and hard picking will be softened. I like setting my compressors where I can still have dynamics with the pick on my strings.
    Have fun!

Compression (simple MXR), as with my Frank's Red Hot sauce...I put that schiff on everything! Akin to WickedFesterBand...compression really brings out the secret sauce on my single coils.

I think you would have been happier with the cool music. That one seems okay but not as functional as the cool music. It depends on whether you have it at the beginning of your signal chain or the end of your signal chain. If it's at the beginning all it does is even out all of the notes coming from your guitar so that the low notes come up higher and the higher amplitudes come down lower to even it out onto a flat chain of waves. If you put it at the end it does the same thing but it does it with all the other effects factored in. At the beginning you flatten out the guitar alone but then the overdrives and the reverbs can again take it out of compression mode.. play both ways and see how you like it you will need to change the knobs on every pedal you want to use depending on the guitar with the pickups that have different personalities
