- Earlier in 2023 I went up to Canada to buy a geodesic radome (more info here! • I Bought A Geodesic Sp... ).
Since this is a larger project, it's likely going to take several videos to get it all assembled. It also might not be put together until next spring. This video is just a progress update on the dome project, where we move it up the hill closer to the final assembly site.

You have a lot of lovely project ideas on your channel and I love how much you know about what you do. Keep up the hard work! Bravo
The ducttape job on the trailer definitely has a Red-Green Show vibe
"Remember, this fix is only temporary, unless it works." 🔨
If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

@@majbewI’m a man, but I can change, if I have to, I guess.
In keeping with the Canadian dome, that is a real Red Green repair! If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy!
Quando omni flunkus, mortati!
Handymans secret weapon. Duck tape lol
Home for the dome!
*_Dome Sweet Dome_* 😉
I like the skylight idea
Cool stuff
Nice video
Awesome 👌
I used to work for a company back around 2004 that made these, except way bigger. Temcor was the company. The gusset plates I made on a mill were 18" in diameter or so. Everything was aluminum plate, sheet, and extrusion. Some of them we made were hundreds of feet across.
Winter's coming!
We love the raydome project !
This project is so epic to see materialize. Those extras would make an amazing canopy or picnic table umbrellas. Keep up the good work!!!
if you don't care about clear visibility, you can get heavy gauge plastic sheet intended for greenhouses at very reasonable prices, and far cheaper than Plexiglass. Its UV resistant, not terribly expensive, and holds up to weather, and wind well. I built a greenhouse where the bulkhead to my basement was supposed to go, and it's held up for many years. It may be easy to put it in place of the material on the rest of the panels.
One tip is take a little pruning hand saw, it's way more efficient and quicker then using an axe for those little trees under 10 or so inches
The elusive satellite Peacock ... I'm here for this.
It's nice to see that the preparations for the construction of the dome have begun. Now, the preparations, along with the wind turbine and the power supply, make sense. I'm very excited about the upcoming videos; this is a very interesting project. I find the Halloween decorations spooky. Hanging the skulls is a good idea that hadn't occurred to me; I've always placed them and illuminated them with electronic tea lights.
lots of HAM sats on LEO with uhf/vhf links, some audio, some packet data (i.e. ax25) some both. very cool specially if you got some sat track software controlling the dish position. you can access their "bbs" and exchange data with other regions when that sat pass above them. Very nice piece of land. All the best..
I really like and love you ```````because of your hard work and countubition for us````and your best knowledge `everytime you give some things new ``````again thanks from bottom of my heart `````❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
You forgot JB Weld, Cyanoacrylate and Gorilla glue on the iron, wood and tape :D
I love what you do.

ayup, this baby can scan _so many_ pulsars
I'm so hyped for this series!
Nice video, and nice drone views ! Inspiring to make and build things, as always. Thanks
Happy to see the "Happy Face" dish assembled, Gabe! I think I gave you a black steel mounting ring for it also. You definitely need to get yourself a little welder. A cheap 110V MiG would have made short work of that repair (granted, you don't enough power out at the site...)
Oh wait, you just stacked the two pieces :)
Yep, just set it up quick for a photo-op! You did give me the ring, and I'm planning to re-assemble it soon. I want to build an az/el rig at home using my 7ft dish as a proof of concept, then move it out to Sandland or copy it for the other reflectors.
Can't wait to see the dome being put together and in use!
Nowhere within part 80 of FCC codes does it say anything about where you can use a marine radar.
Federal Communications Commission (FCC) does not regulate maritime radar. Instead, maritime radar is primarily governed by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU)
But, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO): ICAO is responsible for regulating and setting standards for radar systems used in aviation, including air traffic control radar and weather radar. These standards are documented in the Annexes to the Convention on International Civil Aviation (Chicago Convention).
Ergo: do your due diligence, see who is using the same frequencies that your radar is capable of and try not to step on them.
These white geodesic domes certainly do look kino.
This is a fun project. Looking forward to seeing it assembled. Thanks for the interesting content!
And here we have a real ax man...
Cool
I bet that 'weld' will hold for years to come.
As of Saturday it had an actual weld
about 5 minutes in "we ended up with a bunch of these hexagons" while pointing at a obvious pentagon :P
Ha, I didn't even notice that one was 5 panels. Most of these were 6-sided ones!
those fall colors in the drone shots is really pretty.
Thanks! It's really pretty right now, especially out away from the cities.
Back before wider mobile internet availability some storm chasers ran boat radar on their vehicles. I know it was frowned on, but I don't know if it was illegal.
yes it is illegal. There are or were plans for using radar units if you have a ham license and move the system to a ham band.
2:50 - "Sandland Tie Fighter spares" - now open for business....
Man id love to have land like that and do shenanigans xD Keep it up :3
If you want to make windows, we can get some clear plastic from menards and cut them up on the giant cnc.
yes lets go! i didnt expect to see this project continuing so soon. sweet dude!! i love your content! keep up the great work. you have some great tips on a bunch of things. i cant wait to see what you can accomplish with this new dome of yours.
Pretty sure you exceeded the necessary tolerances required on that duct tape repair. I'm glad you stopped there because super glue would have been taking it way too far. :)
you answered my questions before i could ask them lol. i always expected the domes to have so kind of extra function but they are just round sheds that dont block rf. that is kind of disappointing but still look extremely cool so they get a pass.
You know, kingdoms is or was located in Bloomington. They may have some parts for you.
Also, I used to work on those radomes. I may have some gear for you also.
These extra pieces of dome would make nice roofs for the pick nick tables... kind of a dometory kind of this
It would look awesome on my farm. It would make a great tent.
I've seen some geodesic tents and DIY greenhouses made from PVC and clear plastic, kind of want to make one for my house now!
@@saveitforpartsI believe because of your videos, I've been fed TH-cam recommendations for people building geodesic "homes", made out of wooden sections, ones which you buy I believe. Looked quite fancy!
Pretty sure that’s a pentagon, Gabe! Lol
I got so used to most of the pieces being hexagons that I didn't look closely at that last one 😅
Those tailgater units could form a functional art piece called the VLAD the Very Large Amount of Domes...
I've acquired a SeaTel 5004 with a 1.27 m dish inside that's missing its controller but that OK as I'm planing on using my own servo motors to aim it. Following to see what you do!
Love your videos dude. Maybe invest in a lapel or shotgun mic though!
Yeah, audio is one of my weak points. I have some antique wireless mics around somewhere...
Dude, you are a bad ass. Can I be on your Zombie Apocalypse team? Im learning electronics and mechanics and stuff. Ill haul the cookware. lol
One of these days I need to do a zombie themed video...
If you don't have one, you have to get an amateur radio license - You'd pass the first test in your sleep and would be a great guy for the community! Love your work!
He already has one.
I've got a tech license, I just don't chat much with it because I'm always busy with other silly things!
7:21 @UsagiElectric has been working on a Bendix computer. Maybe he can help figure out what that "radome" is and/or why the Bendix name is on it.
Looking forward to the DefenBunker episode. It’s what we got when he cancelled the arrow and went with nuclear tipped Bomarcs making Canada a bigger USSR target 😂
That might be out next week! It was a bit of a side quest and my camera work isn't fantastic, but I can never pass up a good bunker 😊
@@saveitforpartsSweeeeet! Ty
Dude this is so cool! I've also been thinking of following your "How to get live satellite images directly from Space" video. Nice video man!
watch it. its a great one. i was able to do it myself super easily. Save it for parts is great at breaking it down in simple terms.
what tool would you want/would aid in your projects the most? A welder? CNC machine? lathe?
I actually have an antique welder and a (wood) lathe, but haven't found the time / space / motivation to set them up and learn how to use them! I have a couple projects in mind for the welder, but having never used a lathe I can't think of any projects other than table legs and cannons. Likewise I'm not sure what I'd do with a CNC machine! I keep eyeballing those Chinese mini excavators, but I'd probably cause a LOT of damage to Sandland and my backyard with one of those!
@@saveitforparts damaged property or not, it would make for a banger video! :D
I bought a CNC machine ( a full sized vertical machining center) to "aid" in my projects, and instead of "aiding" other projects, it became the biggest project that almost never ends
Very envious of y'all's Sandlands project, I'd love to work on a similar development myself one day. Why are radomes… domes? Seems like you could protect a dish much more simply than such a complex arrangement of pieces. (For example, some walls, or a hanging mesh). Is it more to do with opsec things?
I think it's the most efficient shape, for a round dish that rotates, a spherical cover provides the closest fit. A cubical enclosure would need more material and be more empty space to heat.
@@saveitforparts truuuuue I hadn't considered these factors.
I don't know a lot about satellite dishes but it sounds like the tailgaters don't have a lot of swing to cover the ranges you want. If you use your dome, is there a way to aim them at all the frequency ranges you want at the same time? Would they work if you tied them all together with one output? Thanks!
I'll probably use a larger dish and software-defined radio with different feeds for a wider frequency range. We'll see if I can fit all the feeds on there at once or if I need to swap them out!
Do you know where that broken panel is located from the dome’s plans? I’m just wondering- it would be annoying if it were a ground contact section.
All the ground contact ones have a heavier base piece on the bottom, so we have those stacked separately. We do need to leave space for a door though!
This is gonna look pretty cool once it’s done! I’m imagining a big igloo lol. My first thought for the big radome would be to flip it over for a fish pond. I would like to see a weather radar setup in the big dome too
coo
are you going to wire it so you can do radio astronomy from the sand bar?
That would be pretty cool! We have sort of an army field phone system, just gotta figure out how to send data over WWII phone wires 😂
Ok so I figured out what you are up to. You are gonna compete with Teslas starlink. Sandlink.
hi
Around the 1:20 mark I thought the tools you had on your belt were an open carry pistol for a sec. It got me thinking, do you have the ability/want to do any gun content? Sandland seems like it's in a spot you could set up a range and I'm sure you could come up with some cool physics projects with them if that's something you're into, I know I would. Although, I'm sure monetization could be an issue there.
TH-cam (and it's advertisers) are *very* touchy about gun content these days. It's a quick way to do irreparable harm to a channel.
We have a range at Sandland :-) As @pileofstuff said, TH-cam doesn't like pew pew content and it's not totally clear how it affects a channel. A lot of channels just don't do that any more, or have shut down completely. I *very* occasionally have showed some of my older / project stuff but it's been a while, and they got demonetized right away :-/
@@saveitforparts Wish I had a private range haha. That's too bad, but not surprising about the instant demonetization.
Someone get this man a chainsaw and... for gosh sake's a welder's kit to experiment with lol.
You need a welding machine😋😋
learn the ways of jb weld, you should.
What a shame how few views this has
It's not technically published yet, you must have snuck in early :-D
Well thats a pleasent suprise!@@saveitforparts
I think there are a couple ways to see "unlisted" videos semi-accidentally :-P
Duct tape *and* zip ties? Plush!
You can perform a bypass heart surgery with duct tape... :-)
these are pentagons not hexagons (-=
Most of them are 6-sided.
@@saveitforparts I trust you because I trust you, but you were holding a pentagon when you said hexagon like six times, that's all bud (-=
Of course you are busy, but your solution for felling that tree was pretty boring. Oh, and as to legality of boat radar on land, remember you are not doing this in Minnesota where Fun is Forbidden. I figure you could in a pinch just build another fish pond up on the hill (actual water optional) and park that Minnesota Illegal Boaty McBoatface in the middle. With the radome on an oversized mast. Really, Officialdom is much happier when you don't make them work by actually thinking on a novel scenario.
Get a cheap welder

I have the tooliom 135 mig/stick/tig it is an amazing welder for the price
"We got it from Canada!"
K so yeah, you did, but you got it from Ontario. If you bought something in New Jersey you'd say you bought it in New Jersey. Not that you bought it in the USA.
Your critique about Canadian Tire irked me enough, your broadstroke on Canada here is enough. Americans do it all the time and as a radio enthusiast I would expect you to do better. You wanna talk about shitty hardware, let's talk about Harbour Freight.
"WOW I got a radio transmission from Canada!" no one is batting an eye if it came from Oshawa, but someone might pay attention if you received it from Lloydminster.
C'mon. Learn our geography. We had to learn yours. For goodness sake, we gave you this radome for free.
Ontario doesn't really narrow it down, that province goes all over the place :-D I'm pretty sure I said Carp / Ottawa :-)
And don't worry, I pay just as little attention to much of the US. I consider New Jersey one of those tiny states somewhere out East, I think it's a suburb of New York?
We were also informed by multiple Canadians that Harbor Freight (Princess Auto) is several steps in quality above Canadian Tire :-)
This is such an old video...meh
Not sure what you mean, I just finished filming this :-P
I love your videos dude but the way you used that axe was horrible! sorry man
