I Bought A Geodesic Space Dome!

- This fall I went up to Ontario, Canada, to pick up an 18ft diameter geodesic dome! This was at a former NATO satellite facility near the Diefenbunker, outside Ottawa. (The big white dome on top of the building is still in use, so we just got a smaller one :-)
We're planning to install this at Sandland for use as a radio observatory and general cool looking lawn ornament, probably in the upper field near the fast food playland that we picked up previously.
Huge thanks to Marcus Leech and the Canadian Center for Experimental Radio Astronomy (www.ccera.ca/) as well as CSS Building Inc (www.cssbuilding.ca/) for hooking us up with this!
The CCERA is refurbishing the big satellite antenna at Carp into a radio telescope. I'll be doing a follow-up video with more info on the organization and their facility. They're all volunteers, and as with most science things, they can always use more funding! If you'd like to help CCERA with a donation, click here: gofund.me/29c87cc8
Parts of this video were filmed on location at the Diefenbunker: Canada's Cold War museum. I'll probably be doing another follow-up video on the bunker since it's so big and interesting! You can find more about it here: diefenbunker.ca/
Thanks also to @SimpleElectronics and Tim Skinner (timpossible.photography/) for helping out with this project!
Stay tuned for more videos about this project, coming soon!

I mean you can't say no to that. Just think of the escape room that would be.
@@Xsiondumore like a decommissioned diesel-electric sub that needs a crankshaft.
@@jamesscott1932the best will it run on the Internet. Lol
@@jamesscott1932the uhaul trip from halifax will be epic 🥳
....and then launched a satellite with an old Polaris missile..
I see you got the authentic Canadian tire experience. Cant wait to see you build the dome.
Aka crappy tire
i am Canadian and its well known here that if you ever got something to return, may god be with you, because you gonna need it!
yeah thats about how all of em are aside from like melfort, saskatchewan
only Canadian tire i've had good quality products from
These videos are getting better every time - the channel progress is amazing!
Please do a dedicated bunker video!! Would be so cool!
How about a collaborative bunker build with Colin Furze?
Can't believe you were in my back yard and didn't even know you were here!
Wish I would have known. Could have helped you with the hardware issues.
Sorry! I kept it a little on the down-low aside from a few people I knew in the area.
Gabe, ‘My brain is basically Mountain Dew flavored mush at this point’ is my all-time favorite line from any of your videos. It could also read as my current status across a variety of platforms and devices.
Off topic, but I LOVE that drink! It's about the only fizzy juice drink left in the UK still full of "natural" sugar since the sugar tax was introduced here in about 2018. Not only does that mean it tastes better (to combat this "sugar tax", drink makers decided to reduce the regular sugars and then mix with roughly the same sorts of aspartame/Neutrasweet chemicals as in diet/no-sugar drinks. This means they don't taste as nice as they did pre-2018!), but it's also useful for diabetics when we need a REALLY sugary drink to brink us back from low blood sugars.
Looks like a perfect
addition to your above ground laire....
You're my chill and relax channel.
Very cool to see you were in the neighborhood! The escape room at the bunker actually goes on in areas that are actively used by the museum, just after hours (unless they changed it recently). I'd recommend people try it out as its quite a fun one. Having gone through the museum a couple of times, it really is one of a kind and worth sharing in a video. It's a pretty well kept secret in the national capital region! On certain days of the month, guys from the local ham radio club are there too.
I had the opportunity to go inside a massive dome with an 85-foot parabolic inside. It was uncanny how fast that thing moved! One of the coolest things I've ever seen.
Thats cool !!
Cant wait to see you turn this into an airplane boat 😁
I started watching this for your do-it-yourself train thingy, last year.
I had NOOO idea what I had gotten myself into with this channel.

Since that third world war everything has changed. Food, fuel, communications even the people. I keep getting a signal from I believe Wisconsin. The call sign is “ sandland.” They say there is water and food and life there. They say they are looking for survivors. I’m on the old highways making my way to ice age trail so I can get to sandland
Part 2: How I got targeted by both Chinese and Russian ICBMs.
Just remember to check to make sure you can still fit the dish parts inside BEFORE you finish putting the dome together! Would suck to have it all together and find out the pieces of the dish don't fit through the door!
A cool trick you should try once it's together is to lay down on the ground with your head exactly in the center of the dome and start playing low frequency tones like for meditation.
cannot wait until he decides to build a satellite and launch into space.
Definitely does bounce the sound around with the echoes at 6:14
Good route selection, 401 through Toronto is a nightmare, and the border agents at detroit are not as kind as at SSM. You drove through my town.
No such thing as junk. Love the theme of this thing you doing. People don't realise how much potential is in the things being thrown away, unused, or considered worthless, just rusting away. I mean, to an extent, it's good for those who do understand it lol for less competition and much lower price.
EXITED!!!!! truly the content youtube was designed for.
Exactly: interesting places and things!
When you are awesome, your channel can’t help but be awesome as well.
Thank you for taking us along for the ride.
Your channel remains the most interesting on my subscriptions list for reasons like this!
Amazing
"Today. We're picking up a geodesic dome!" I had waited a long for hear that!
I didn't hesitate a second to hit that subscribe button! Awesome content, sir! Thank you!
That is so cool!
"we should finish the projects we already have, like the Playland, before we bring in new projects. But that's just that's just not the Sandland way!" I know the feeling. Amazingly awesome the new projects however. Really cool and I too look forward to installing all of my listening and monitoring station systems.
This channel always has a suprise up its sleeve
Seeing those BUDs makes me smile... they'll always have a special place in my heart (and maybe my wish list to find one again!)
The border guy clearly wanted to know who your Geodesic Space Dome guy was!!
LOL the rip at Canadian Tire was great, been in a few and I really don't know what to label them as lmao
As i cruise into my 7th decade on this planet, I can state categorically that Canadian Tire used to be MUCH better, but that changed about 10 years ago when a controlling interest was sold to a U.S. investment firm. I've been involved in a number of "hardware heavy" hobbies over the years, and Canadian Tire used to be one of the "go to" places. Now? It's more of a last resort. Very sad.
the canadian tire rant is spot on. I've bought so many items that disappointed right away. Good place for dirt though.
I'm surprised he had trouble finding tools there - most stores have a large tool section right in the middle of the store, or at least used to... I have a large Maximum (or whatever the CTC brand is) socket set that's pretty good quality, but I haven't been to a Crappy Tire in a long time now as I'm not in Canada anymore. They do sell a ton of "as seen on TV" level crap though too
@@gorak9000really really depends on the location. A lot are just aging stock and understaffed 😂
TBH CT sells a lot of crap, lol.
I'm very excited to see this progess. Awesome to see fellow nerds helping the channel out! Keep up the great work. Love to see it.
What a wonderful addition! Good for you! 🎉🎉🎉
So cool. Excited for the follow up
THE D O M E . In all seriousness you should definitely do a video/s on the radio observatory and the adjacent bunker, I'm honestly more impressed by the source than the dome itself.
Next week is a video on the big dome and the radio telescope project!
My grand-father was an electrical engineer at the NORAD radar on Mount Apica, Quebec, Canada
There was an other one on Mount Ste-Marguerite, St-Sylvestre-de-Beauce...now called Mont Radar
The bunker is still there and you can rent it for events, its private now
Can't wait for the additional trip videos. This is so exciting!
What a great score and gift!
I am really enjoying your content, sir! Keep up the great work!
Great video. Can't wait to see you put the dome together!
You do such cool stuff. I really enjoy your videos. You are great at explanting what you are doing so I get to lean new things about a tech field I have never experience. Thanks for all your hard work at making these videos.
Effort well spent. Thanks for the vid!
Those were very interesting insights, thank you for showing. Now I'm really looking forward to the new project.
Great video!!! Can't wait for part 2, 3, 4, etc.
That is a lot of work ahead just prepping a site to set the dome up ! Yes, I think there is at least 3 videos on that coming. Great find !
I was out in Ottawa in July and saw the Diefenbunker. Highly recommend the guided tour... the guy that does it used to work in the bunker and he's full of stories.
Awesome! If we'd had more time we would have done that, but we wanted to save more daylight for driving.
So jealous! I remember going to see the Mitchell Park Domes as a kid and I've been fascinated with geodesic domes ever since.
it just gets better and better
So cool stepping your game up!!! Can't wait to see what you do with it!!!
Holy Crow! I've been in the Diefenbunker many many times. It's great to see you talking about it!
this is so fricken cool!! Cant wait to see what you do with this!
I can not wait for the upcoming content!
Channel is surely growing. Great projects
Appreciate how your brain works…a million creative projects poppin’ off all the time!
The problem is I have way more projects than time to actually do them!
Thanks for everything with lots of love ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
ah dang i was hoping to see the dome up-gives me something to look forward to thanks for sharing.
Great video...👍
Geodesic Domes are COOL.
I thoroughly enjoy your content my man! Please keep up the good work for us nerds!
I love your channel sooo much!
Everything you do is so interesting :D
The backyard is so pretty! Full of colors! 11:44
You get all the cool stuff and I would love to see more on the bunker.
Well cool will be interesting seeing you erect this ray dome and your progress with it ,awesome video always wondered what these things were for ,thanks .
What a sweet feel! And I love our guy in the tie-dye T-shirt!
this video is awesome, you are a great story teller and editor
indeed very cool content and idea with the dome!
I've been up inside a few weather service WSR-88D radomes and it's always neat. The sound does get weird!
This was a fantastic video!
Wow this is exciting!
Love your channel, I’ve learned so much. Always enjoy your videos. Everything is well presented. Look forward to see what you do with the dome!
I've heard he is gonna chrome it
On the globe you showed there was one little ray dome you showed in ireland, i saw that one in real life! (I think it was a ray dome for sure but i cant be sure if its time same one on the map)
amazing effort
You have a monorail car, a BK play place, AND a satelite dome?!
You are the coolest human being ever!
It's a group effort :-) Those aren't even the main point of the property, the owner just wants to dig tunnels so he lets us do other dumb things with the "useless" surface land!
As a former Minnesotan and super into the stuff on your videos and former sandland peeps...basic my wife and I love these and want to visit since we're not too far away. An observatory would rock!
This is awesome!
Wow! and a nice dish too
Canadian Space Services..??😂 That just hits the ear weird. That’s pretty awesome that the head of the facility set you like that. Nice to see there are still decent humans in the world. You get all the cool toys!🎉. It’s pretty how you brought it home. I found a 10’ Parabolic satellite dish in Minnesota for basically $10. I wish I still had it in me to travel across the country to bring my fund home. Well done. I look forward to your video on that facility. With that kind of access, you’ll have one hell of a documentary.
While Canada is not the behemoth that USA is in space, they're no slouch. Don't forget the Canadarm.
@@mercster meant no disrespect… at all.
This is the best buy ever....😊👍👍
I would love to see videos of both the bunker and satellite array. Great stuff!
So cool man, I love your channel.
that large dish looks so cool. I would love to play with that
Very cool, congrats
man, your videos are awesome
Broooooo. Holy cow what a find.
8:32 Did you know? Every room that can be locked is an escape room if you try hard enough!
yea i was a bit confused, like isn't the whole thing a bunker? i thought it was creepy, but they probably just use it for storage. or maybe someone bought part of it and lives there?
That is SO COOL!
Hope I can move back home to Minnesota soon... it's so beautiful
That’s awesome!
Would be a cool place to camp out in if it was insulated and waterproofed
Love your channel
Very cool!
I did not know about the monorail, thats really cool.
Great video! Keep up the editing, its getting better and better!
Thanks! I kind of enjoy the editing part, and trying out new tricks.
I think it's pretty neat to imagine you travelling home in a U-Haul with this, and you passing through just a couple hours south of me too (north of the Sault). However, I don't envy the long-haul trip in that cabin. I did that recently over a ~2500KM drive and I NEVER, EVER, want to do that again, especially with three people and a lack of cruse control.
Also, my Canadian Tire, while low-end for my community, saves me from having to drive down to the Sault most times so it's good for something 😋
This is amazing tbh
Being talked into taking an extra U-haul trailer from Canada to the US sounds like something that would happen to me.
Great vid and video tour of the space astronomy center !!!
I'll have a longer tour of the astronomy outfit next week! And probably one of the Diefenbunker soon!
that looks like fun to put together, kind of like a huge erector set. awesome find
