What a beautiful rendition of one of the greatest songs from the 1960s. I love the original version from Roger Mcguinn and the Byrds but Petty completely captures the spirit of the song. This is an undiscovered gem.
What an appropriate song for Tom to have covered and such a wonderful version. I wonder if people ever know their time is up? All I know is Tom Petty's passing has cut very deep in my life and in the lives of a lot of people I care about.
Well said, and my life too. There is a huge void that cannot be filled. There will never be another Tom Petty or anyone who could come close to him in style, character, and musicianship.
Only Tom and the Heartbreakers can turn a cover into there own they are the best cover band ever in this world we miss you dearly Tom. Hard not too tear up on this one
Petty truly appreciated McGuinn's genius and did himself credit showing he wasn't simply "into himself" but wanted others to honor the music he loved himself.
Tom Always Said He Wanted Him and His Guys to Sound Like The Byrds.............well, here he is, covering the Byrds awesomely. RIP TOM, PETER................we miss you. Freedom is the word.
My favorite singer and band, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. This is an awesome tribute to a young man who died too soon. Tom Petty does it better that anyone. I love this song, and I'm glad that Tom Petty left us this one to remember him by, along with the rest of his many recordings that will never be equalled.
Sometimes correcting others IS appropriate - thank you for making sure Roger McGuinn's name doesn't die before the man himself. Even Tom Petty has publicly corrected people about Roger McGuinn (in front of Roger, on camera)
Tom does a great job on this Dylan/McGuinn song. Tom was such a fan of The Byrds. He covered "So You Want To Be A Rock n' Roll Star" & "I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better." To many both covers are better than the originals. On Chris Hillman's latest album he covers Tom's song "Wildflowers." Petty & some of the Heartbreakers also accompany Hillman on the album, which was recorded at Tom Petty' s recording studio. It is hard not having Tom Petty around anymore. But we still have his music.✌
Sorry Joseph but there is no better version of than "I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better." than Gene Clark. Petty was note for perfect copy of the B yrds version.
@@kennyjeanful : Sorry if I misled you about my feelings towards Tom Petty's cover of The Byrds " I'll Feel A Lot Better." I stated that many people feel that Petty's cover of this Byrd tune is better than the original. I am not one of them. Actually this Gene Clark song is my favorite Byrd tune. I place it in my all time Top 10 list of songs. Again, sorry for misleading you & I thank you for defending this underrated song.🤗✌
I like this cover by TP live. Loved the original more from Roger McGuinn from one of the greatest movies ever done, Easy Rider. Thanx for posting this.
@@fargeeks I love Tom Petty...but you're right...the Byrds version is superior. Its quieter; the song is a yearning prayer of remembrance for a deceased friend...Petty's version is "jaunty", comparatively. (Benmont's playing is beautiful, though.) The X-factor in the Byrds version...Clarence White's guitar. He played beautifully! What a loss for the music world when he died...tragic.
Nice touch for a memorial. Always lived near rivers and oceans - so peaceful. Thanks LoveBandit for the suggestion. I love Tom & The Heartbreakers version, because I know and love this Band. r.i.p. Dear Tom.
I don't care for either version. No wonder I had a hard time remembering the song. It sounds like a background for a TV commercial to me. Ok haters that's just my opinion. Sorry.
@@neilchesterman885 I seen it the first week it came out in 1969 and many times since. I have watched it both straight and high. And my statement still stands .

jeff silverman I know the feeling my brother. A universally human feeling for sure.

These losses and cuts makes it easier for us to leave this place.
Yes,I know some people know,at least my late husband did...this song is truly beautiful,it brings tears to my eyes.
I can't wrap my head around the fact he's actually gone.

Remarkable. Petty was always in his element when doing this style of music. He was quite the musician.
And showman!!
@@lindaetheredge7972, yes! He always appreciated The Byrds, too.
A great performance of a fine song. RIP Tom, you'll be truly missed,
How sad, goodbye dear Tom Petty.

i LOVE this! As always, it seems as though Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers covers are so much better than the originals.

You know your "stuff." And yes Tom & Roger were on the same musical page.
WOW. Tom was a special one and this song of the Byrds epitomises how he identified it as an extension of himself. Yes Tom we understand and miss you
love the way he sings this song , so beautiful
A really nice rendition. Tom always had a way of doing justice to a cover song.
omg, I never knew Tom did this song. I love his version. Beautiful.

Great voice for a great song. Thank you Tom and Benmont.
This is the best cover ever from Roger McQuin!
*McGuinn, not "McQuin"

REST IN PEACE, Tom Petty! You was one of the best! Love from Norway!
hauntingly beautiful!
We always want more time, but to since how precious time is, elusive. Life is one day at a time, no more
I wish I had seen Tom in concert. Back in the day, our radio stations played strictly Top 40 songs, none of this good stuff! Such talent!!

Just as wonderful as the Byrds' orginal version, in my opinion.
I like the byrds version better
