“The most interesting pattern we found in the way that cliff slept was one eye was pecked out, one ear was bit off, and two toes appear to have been cut off by an extra sharp samurai sword.”
I recall years ago hearing someone (who was very anti-religion and superstition) say that feng shui makes sense. It has words and ideas that sound like superstition but it is largely about "animals feel comfy when they can see who is approaching them" and guess what? We are animals. We like seeing who is approaching us. It is like saying that "it's bad luck to walk under a ladder" is superstition - the fastest way to have a bad time involving a ladder is to walk under one and knock into it, this is just reasonable facts and concerns dressed up in different words.
This is true. I am 0% superstitious, but I moved by bed from having the feet towards the door to the “ideal” position (although my windows are differently placed) and I do sleep well. I also set up my office with the same principles (no back to the door, etc. It really helps. You never feel quite settled if you are “exposed”.
Some of the Feng Shui practices are no longer relevant, just hanging in as tradition, but most of them can be traced back to some really good reason for doing it that way.
@@celoceanicon Yep, I’m pretty sure watching Dear Modern has helped me to figure out what is logic and what is not. Having your back to the door does make you less relaxed. Moving the bed help me to sleep better. I never considered using furniture to help control the “flow” of a room when you can’t move the walls until I watched this. I’m not a design person, so I really enjoy it. That’s about as far as I get into it though.
A solid efficacy in psychology an human nature dressed up with swords & sorcery with a sprinkle of nefarious animals to keep me entertained? I'd be an arclight articifer instead of an electrical engineer in a heartbeat if the reasoning was as entertaining and the results ended up the same.
Just found this channel this week. I moved my bed tonight. I immediately noticed just how much more space was open in the room. So much that I was able to move in an accent table from the adjoining room that had been getting cramped, so that one change made two whole rooms so much more open than I thought they could be.
OMG! The ending was just . . . So magical and romantic! My teen and I had tears of joy in our eyes. I love seeing Cliff and his husband. Cutest couple of all time!!!
For the last couple of months I've been sleeping with my bed against the window with my feet facing the door. I've been watching Cliff's vids for ages, and I knew it was bad for me to have my bed like this but due to having to store a load of other stuff in the room for the moment it's the only place to put the bed. The result is I've had the worst two months of sleep of my life. I use an eye mask and earplugs too due to light and auditory sensitivities, but I still sleep like crap currently. Soon all this stuff will be out of here thankfully.
"Stop blaming yourself, learn feng shui and blame the furniture!" Cliff Tan You are funny and inventive. Thank you so much for your videos. Now I can walk around my house and feel like it is welcoming me.
The most interesting thing to me about this channel is how intuitive it is. Like, I can feel the vulnerable energy when he puts the bed in the wrong place even through the diagrams. And when he puts it right it feels… peaceful.
My husband is Korean and we watch a lot of K-dramas (since I am learning Korean language). We really enjoyed your homage to K-Dramas :) Thank you for the great information and also the laughs :)
Been following you for years and finally made changes to my studio apartment based on your advice. I love it! I'm both more productive and more relaxed! Thank you for all of your great and fun content !
Okay three things- 1. I automatically waved to Cliff when he waved 👋😂 2. It was painful seeing the bed in that bad Fung Shui position. My brain automatically thought "oh gosh, no please don't do it". I think bad Feng Shui positioning could definitely be made into a form of torture. 3. Love the ridiculousness of this channel. 😂 I told my best friend if start complaining tell me "Don't be a weiner and FIX IT".
I appreciate the fact that he is being truthful about how dangerous sleeping is. Too often people don't take these things seriously and next thing you know you've lost a leg and you have a bird on one shoulder and a monkey on the other. 🤯 Wait a minute!! This must be how Pirates are made! I never knew there was a Pirate and Fung Shui connection. Incredible.
Cliff is getting better and better at science. I think this was ten times more valid than the last one. MUCH better controls. Good improvement! Speaking of improvement, improving your sleep by just 1% every day could add up to a lot of extra hours you didn't enjoy or use each year!
I would have called feng shui superstition before I started watching your channel, but when I watch you work your magic on rooms the results clearly speak for themselves. Things are always so much better after! Keep it up. Love your work.
Feng Shui principals still apply- now for different reasons! Bad ventilation IS still bad for your health and business, but depending where you live certain things might not apply. My cousins ex pointed the foot of his bed toward the window in montana, one time he woke up to the sight of a bear jumped up and knocked a big mounted buck head on himself. 😂😅
@@CM-tt2mf putting your bed against the window is always bad, no matter if you have birds or monkeys that want to kill you in the area ... Especially if there are bears, that do want to kill you xDDD
I would propose we do this as a community study. We can use a shared document like a google spreadsheet or form to submit our own sleep data with each bed position. Controls can be made for the relative size and shape of the bedrooms. People in large loft or studio spaces would have to be a separate category than people in smaller spaces, and obviously if you have a substantial limitation in where to place the bed like a large fixed storage array.
As someone on the spectrum who is highly sensitive to their environment, I can say it actually matters to me. Not every single night, but on bad nights and arcing overall, how stable and protected my bed feels to me can have big impacts on my mood.

Hey, I have a feng shui puzzle for you. How do you arrange a small bedroom with 2 large windows, an exterior (non-functioning) door and a missive over sized stone fireplace that juts out into the middle of the room? With a queen size bed, two night stands, two long dressers, two tall chest of drawers and an antique secretary cabinet? Oh and you still have to be able to access the tiny gun closet not even big enough for a person to stand in that tucked up in the corner behind the fireplace.
The drawing is a ground opening to hold trash cans to be lifted. This was a technique in other countries. Saved on having to pick up trash every week. Kept smells to a limit, too.
I did not expect that ending, great video Cliff! I guess bed placement really affects our quality of sleep. Out of curiosity though, would it be possible for you to do this experiment again with someone who is not knowledgeable about feng shui? Chances are, the results could be biased due to cognitive bias leading to some sort of placebo or nocebo.

I think that window height should also be taken into account. In your room, you could put the headboard completely against the wall without blocking any part of the window and I think having the window that high makes a difference. The first way is still better for the room because it gives a clearer path but I don't think being under a window or facing a door is inherantly terrible depending on the rest of the room setup. I will say that I do appreciate when architects plan out windows based on needed furniture. For example in our current master bedroom a Queen or even King size bed fits perfectly between 2 windows, the windows are skinnier than usual but taller than usual, but high enough from the floor that the night tables don't come above the sil. To our feet is the door to the master bath and to our right is the door to the room, so it is nice because if one of our kids needs to use our bathroom because someone is in theirs, they have a nice little path to the bathroom.
Very interesting to see that it makes a real difference. I do sleep slightly better at the spare bedroom in my parents' house where the bed is in the "command" position, but there many other factors that could be influencing that such as the comfort of the bed, level of darkness in the room etc. Unfortunately the bedroom at my own home is too narrow to not have the bed facing either the door or the window.
Okay not to be dramatic or anything since I barely understand feng shui but the tips about bed placement are like ... life-changing. 😐 I just painstakingly moved my bed into a place I thought it would be weird to put it but using the tips this glorious man has shared and I got in bed....and I already feel calmer. Love your ads. Question: if you had rotated the bed another 90°, would a little wall or curtain between bed and door help against the evil energy comming from the door?
I'm pretty sure in one of his TH-cam shorts, he says that you can probably get away with installing some storage units (e.g. wardrobe or shelf) or a long sidetable to feel as though you are psychologically more distant from the evil energy coming from the door. You'd still be up against the window though, so getting some blinds or some bottom-up shades may also be necessary (depending on what's outside).
