    Lascia Ch'io Pianga
    Lascia ch'io pianga mia cruda sorte,
    E che sospiri la libertà!
    E che sospiri, e che sospiri la libertà!
    Lascia ch'io pianga mia cruda sorte,
    E che sospiri la libertà!
    Il duolo infranga queste ritorte
    De' miei martiri, sol per pietà
    Lascia ch'io pianga mia cruda sorte,
    E che sospiri la libertà!
    E che sospiri, e che sospiri la libertà!
    Lascia ch'io pianga mia cruda sorte,

    I used this in my wedding without the singer for the bridal procession. Only found out years later what the words mean! Not great expression for a wedding as this is essentially mourning a cruel fate and longing for freedom! In my defense I heard it first from another setting from Handels Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno. I still think it makes the perfect bridal procession. It has a magisterial and stately feeling but also a femininity and vulnerability. There’s no texture to the music - just these raw chords waltzing down a predetermined path. It’s a sarabande - a slow, slow dance adding to the stately sadness. I’m not down on marriage by the way but this moment is supposed to be the emotional climax of the ceremony showing the very passage of life from a state of freedom to a state of unity. This music expresses that so perfectly.

    che meraviglia, beh sulla musica non c'erano dubbi che fosse stupenda, è di Handel, ma anche la soprano, canta molto, molto bene, però mai come l'interpretazione (anche se si tratta di un falso ovviamente) del Grande Farinelli, nel film Farinelli voce regina.

    yes it does, thank you Bresso. I'm a writer so I look for 'exact' wording ..but as anyone who's bilingual or multilingual, word's rarely translate 'exactly'...I read 'Lascia' as 'leave me to' almost like 'allow me to'...but your translation of 'let me cry' is damn close and probably the best way to say it. Thanks again. :)

    There are of course many similarities with Italian and French.I studied french for many years in high school and grew up in an Italian speaking home. I think Salantraks response (regardless of if it's exactly correct or not) was well considered. As the person who asked the question, I appreciate the response regardless :)

    • @eriknystrom5839
      @eriknystrom5839 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, to make it more authentic, the tuning was a semitone lower in those days.

    • @TonyBittner-Collins
      @TonyBittner-Collins 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Today's pitch (A=440Hz) is a semitone higher than the one (of many) used during the 18th century (A=415Hz) [in France A=392Hz, a whole tone lower], so the original key is F Major, not E Major.

    • @koeien9939
      @koeien9939 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Baroque tuning is to A415, which is a semitone lower than A440, which is pretty much the standard tuning these days. So going according to the tuning Handel would have used, it is still in F major, just that our ears are accustomed to having A tuned to 440, making us perceive this as E major

    How tricky. Thanks for the info, but actually it is only a half step. I will leave my purist ball in the garage this time. I usually check the keys, but neither do I know about this singer. I was actually testing to see if I wanted to add it to my playlist.

    Being an Australian born Italian (who isn't very fluent AT ALL) in my people's mother tongue. I read ''Lascia ch'io pianga' as 'leave me to cry' or more like 'leave me alone to cry'. I've read online it means 'when he leaves I cry'. Google translate gives us 'let me weep' which isn't bad considering its google translate after all :P ) does Anyone actually KNOW the exact wording? I'd ask my family, except its 5am here in Australia, 9pm in Italy, none of my family there are online.

    Anyone else bothered by the fact that the music given for the vocalist is just a repeat of the first half and doesn't match what's sung in the second half?

    • @johnmillholland6550

      Jill Woodhams typically the singer will interpolate in the second half of a da capo aria. But yes it is very different in this performance.

    è italiano. Comunque tutte queste somiglianze tra italiano e francese non ci sono. Sono lingue romanze entrambe, ma derivano da ceppi differenti. Poi nel canto l'italiano è una lingua particolarmente apprezzata, per la pronuncia delle vocali.
