One from the archive, Leith is located to the north of Edinburgh on the south shore of the Firth of Forth. It used to be entirely separate from Edinburgh with its own council and burgh status. It only became a formal part of the city in 1920. It still contains its own distinct identity and community feel and is really worth visiting. Newhaven is a characterful district located between Leith and Granton. It's a former harbour town on the Firth of Forth and has been a designated conservation area since the late 1970's. Many of the older harbour properties are colourful and distinctive with stairs leading to an upper floor while the lower ground floors were used to store fishing nets.
Both Leith and Newhaven have lots of fantastic independent shops cafes and restaurants that make it a great place to visit while in Edinburgh.

I'm a leither now far away and I am so old I can remember when most of the now posh shore was not a safe place for respectable people and when the tide went out the old rusty bikes prams etc that would emerge from the mud.
On the other hand Leith peaple lived there and they were and are my heart the best in the world
Yes, I too remember it as being a bit run down and neglected. Certainly as a child I can’t ever remember it being somewhere people went. It’s nice to see it thriving now and being properly enjoyed as it’s a great part of the city. When the new tram extension opens it’ll bring a lot more people in to enjoy it. Great video once again David. On my last trip to Edinburgh I visited Newhaven, for the first time. Being a fish lover, I wanted to eat at the Fishmarket Restaurant. I must say that whilst the food was good and I had a superb glass of wine, overall I was slightly underwhelmed, especially as I couldn’t get a table for one, had to eat at the bar and my two course meal cost £55. They also had no oysters that day, with hindsight I should have done what most others were doing, have the takeaway and eat outside. Had a few beers in the Harbour Inn, afterwards, very friendly. Seeing your video makes me realise there’s a lot more and I missed so much.
Hi Gary, I'm really sorry to hear you weren't looked after as well as you should have been at the Fishmarket Restaurant, but I'm really glad you enjoyed your meal. I really like the Harbour Inn, although it's a while since I've been in. Yes, there's so much history to see and dicover in Leith and Newhaven. I've only really just scratched the surface and hopefully one day I can go back and do a better job. I wish I could spend more time on my films, but with working full time I just do what I can. David Wheater. Keep up the good work 👍. Incidentally, I did not realise at the time that I was in Newhaven, I thought I was in Leith. I was looking for a fish restaurant and Fishmarket, came up with superb reviews. I wasn’t really disappointed, it was probably my fault for choosing battered fish as my main course in the restaurant. It was very good but I could have bought the takeaway at half the price. Also, as I said I was alone, if I had been with someone and the bill for two was £110, I probably would not have mind. It’s not the restaurant’s fault I was Billy-No-Mates.

I went to high school in Leith, long before it became trendy and "gentrified"
Hi Jim, hope you're well. Yes, Leith has seen some big changes, some positive and some not so, especially where character has become lost. The city is evolving at a faster rate than I've ever seen just now. The new St James Quarter is due to open next year which will completely change and re-centre the heart of the city. I'm excited to see it as I absolutely hated the old St James Centre & Scottish Office. What will happen to Princes St I've no idea, but it's been under-funded and poorly managed for years and I think it's time to think outside the box and make it beautiful again. I am sad to see Jenners close as it's been there all my life. The old Haymarket car park is finally being redeveloped too. I'm not always a fan of the new architecture, but I guess cities have to evolve to the tastes and needs of a new generation. All the best, David
