    Years ago in '79, I was a 17-year-old high school senior, 6-3 with a 33-inch vertical and back then, that was something in my neck of the woods. Walked around with ankle weights all day to help me get there. David Thompson was my favorite player. Later that year in Navy boot camp my company had about 40-50 kids in it, mostly from the inner city. The irony is in the boot camp Olympics (I guess that's what they called it back then), I represented my squad in the standing broad jump. The brothers loved it. Said they'd never seen a white guy jump like that. Those military years playing basketball all over the globe were tough times but fun times. I balled against international players long before their reputations finally made it stateside. Anyways...the training and technology available today to help these kids reach unprecedented levels of athleticism is off the charts. Good for them and kudos for you guys helping 'em to get there. It's tough doing it alone.

    • @rickharris4513
      @rickharris4513 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Saw David Thompson in high school, he performed his greatest leaps in high school, no question about it.
      According to kids from his school, he did lots of one legged squats standing on a elevated surface with around 115 pounds. Lots of reps. World class long jumpers also train this way.
      I always believed that Larry Brown tried to throttle down his leaps to what was needed to accomplish the job, concerned about the cumulative effect of those landings.
      When I saw him play as a pro he never attempted go to the heights he routinely reached as a prep or freshman at NC State. It seemed that way to me. He injured his knee during off-season training and never seemed quite the same afterwards. To me, anyways.

While my wingspan is longer than my height by 2-3 inches, my arms aren't that long. Tells you that a lot of these guys are inflating their verticals by minimizing their reach on these tests.

    I do remember in my prime of vertical jumping (20-21 yrs old) having "those days" where I was feeling super explosive and could jump a legitimate 5-6" higher than any AVG day. I could never explain it. Diet? Rest? Types of physical activity I had done leading up to it? It was like the planets aligned or something. Average day, I would get around 38-39" but on those special days I'd be getting 44-46". Again, I'd measure the exact same way (7'0 standing reach [I'm short] to a 10'10). Do you think Jamal had one of those days like I mentioned?

I went to check back on the zion vert test, zion was so balance in the air, his upper-body handled the explosiveness extremely well. Nevertheless, 45 to 52, thats insanely unbelievable, i’d love to hear so indept analysis about this leap in vert jump, because i believe there must be some “trade-off” if he was able to gain so much in vertical in such a short time, there should be some changes in “horizontal” performance aspects. Because i once read that quarter squats inc vert but it puts you in some disadvantages in distance running speed,etc.

      @Fact Check just because there isn't a hard fast rule on how to measure VERTICAL leap. Or the long jump. Remember reading a book on Bob Beamon where he said he tried to touch as high as he could on a backboard after the 68 Olympics and consistently touched 4-5 inches below the top. He was around 6'1".

  • @Johnrap
    @Johnrap 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you take two screenshots of the jumper at apex and put them side by side the athlete's heels at apex are even with his waist when standing on the ground. Another clue, the top of his head at apex is roughly the height of the rim, ten feet. This is also correlated by the 12'2" leaping reach, working backward from arm length. You can also compare him to the height of the coach standing on the ground. Even with the coach crouching down, the athlete's heels only reaches the coach's sternum. This is a roughly 38 inch vertical. Which is an excellent and NBA caliber jump, but not a Guinness world record.

      The NBA does two different jump measurements in the NBA Draft Combine. The first is the "Standing Vertical Leap" and the second is the "Max Vertical Leap" of which this is the latter. The latter is now generally considered to be a better measurement for basketball athletes, many of whom are one-footed leapers, for the reasons explained in the video; being specific, people should call these a "max vert" for clarity.
