I love that Anna donated the money she was going to make to Charities. Not wanting to cash in on a story about a Serial killer who hurt so many women says so much about her as a person.
Not so fun fact. I intersected with Rodney Alcala when I was 14 years old. I was cutting through a church parking lot on my way to my friends house and he stopped me asking to take my picture. He wanted me to keep posing and I felt very unsafe and ran into a busy street. I never forgot his face because it was so unique. Years later I heard a podcast on true crime that sounded a lot like my experience. I was able to go online and look him up and there was the face of the man that took my picture. I was extremely fortunate to escape him but every time I hear about him it takes me back.
Not sure if you know this already but they’ve released a lot of his photos, most of the subjects haven’t been identified. You could look though them and see if your photo is there, if you’re comfortable with that (I would understand if it’s too much) I’m not exactly sure who you would contact if your photo is there though. Thanks for sharing your story and I’m glad you’re still here today.
Wow!! That must've been a sick feeling, realizing who he was after the fact. Especially off of details from his other crimes... that's absolutely crazy. 😢 SO glad you're still here! Thank you for sharing
The true hero of this story is the runaway girl who conned him into not only surviving her ordeal but ultimately his capture and incarceration. The fact that she came back and testified at his parole hearing to keep him behind bars makes her even more of a GOAT.
The parking lot scene was spot on. I actually started getting those feelings we all have experienced. Funny, I also told my husband about this - he was kind, but did not understand either. Anna did such an excellent job in capturing what we women experience all the time. I was a teenager in the 70's and this brought back so many memories. I confessed to my husband that I still turn my head away from a car that might come up beside me, especially at night, so the driver won't see my face.
Anna Kendrick seems like she could be your BFF, she is just so down to earth and human. And I love the point you guys made about life being a different experience for women and men. It is so true and sadly some men just refuse to see it.
Woman of the hour had me on EDGE. I was literally gasping, Anna did an amazing job with her director debut and truly showing what it’s like to be a woman trying to succeed and be safe in life
Omg, when you said about going for a walk, I can relate! I was just on my morning walk and a white pickup slowed down, and pulled over ahead about a half block. I was so aware and already plotting my escape plan. As I passed it, the man had pulled over to text, ok, glad he was being safe. But I kept an eye on that truck as it drove off, and didn’t keep it out of my mind until about 5 blocks later 😢. It’s our everyday life, walks, parking areas, elevators, at home alone, I’m always aware.
Anna Kendrick absolutely set a new bar for thrillers and serial killer movies all together and she told a disturbing story in an exhilarating and respectful way. So many in the genre think shock and awe at all expense is necessary; but she ultimately chilled and disturbed us while utmost respecting these womens’ stories and handling their traumas with care.
I heard a couple stories from fans who expressed that Anna Kendrick was the meanest, most rude celebrity they'd ever met. TBH, Woman of the Hour puts into perspective why a woman in public might react in a less-than-positive way to strangers. With everything Chappel Roan has pointed out, and all the ways in which we, as women, are expected to smile and deal with even the most intrusive and violating behaviors. I think we all need to recognize that woman shouldn't be expected to 'be nice'.
Great interview, I appreciate the fact that Anna was willing to open up about the trauma and abuse she experienced. It makes normal people feel like we aren't isolated to this type of behavior from a loved one.
I watched woman of the hour yesterday, it was absolutely fantastic!! Seriously one of the best movies of the year. Such an important story for women to hear. Stay safe out there ladies!
This is a great interview. Newfound respect for Anna Kendrick--such a strong woman. So glad she fought for this movie. Thanks for having her on, Ashley!
Omg, a Crime Junkie Anna Kendrick AND Try Guys cross over? I’m either chronically online or the stars aligned 😂 It just made my day to know that Anna Kendrick knows about the Try Guys now. I’ve been a fan since they were back at Buzzfeed! 😂 Loved this interview and I’ll run to watch the movie after work (:
I recently watched Woman of the Hour and Alice, Darling. Both were powerful yet subtle and honest films. While I'm not a true crime junkie-I need breaks to keep my sense of hope alive-I do explore stories about manipulation and harm through articles, podcasts, and my own writing. Anna is spot on: these stories feel like modern fables, helping us seek clues for how we might survive the worst experiences. Brilliant work and a great interview-thank you!
Such a great interview. Cannot say how much I appreciate discussion about things like this. And such a good film as well. Cannot believe it was her directorial debut!! The movie was so well done in every way, particularly considering the sensitivity of the subject matter. The filmography felt sophisticated and beautiful, and the story felt centered in all the right ways.
Anna Kendrick is my Kryptonite. Her book is so great and funny. She is pretty underrated in the industry, IMO. She is pretty, funny, witty/quick and just the right amount/level of sarcasm in her personality, while knowing when to use it or not.
@@reaper7264 Kryptonite makes Superman "weak." It doesn't "hurt" him whatsoever. It only makes him weak and then able to be hurt by normal things after being exposed to it. Kryptonite itself does nothing you described. LOL. Water is not fire's Kryptonite. LOL. Slightly less Oxygen is fires Kryptonite, as it only weakens fire and doesn't put it out completely. Ergo, she makes me weak. She lowers my natural protections I put up for myself. Meaning I wouldn't be so "guarded" around her. So, basically the entire opposite of your reply. HAHA. Hope that helps. PS, Kryptonite is not bad. It was only used in bad ways by certain individuals. That is like saying water is bad because you can drown in it and/or die if you drink too much of it. ALL things can have a "bad" purpose. Literally all things.
@@pen1208 That's not what people mean when they say that in popular culture. I am more than familiar with superman and Kryptonite was not a good thing for him to be around even though it only drained his power. HA HA HA. People do not use that expression to say that something makes them weak in a good way LOL!
My daughter and I just had this conversation because she I can’t just walk down the street, I can’t park anywhere, because you have taught me how to be safe, I never let my guard down. My friends think I’m nuts but I can’t not put into action what you taught me about always paying attention to my surroundings. And I don’t care if she hates it but she is here with me today because I’ve taught her from a small child to always be aware and keep yourself safe, never trust anyone.
Unfortunately, I just bought my single niece 4 canisters of pepper spray, one to carry with her and three others to hide in different places of her new home for Xmas. She just bought her new home about an hour from any family, is educated with a good job. But, all this does not matter when it comes to the perpetual violence against women. As, the safety aunt in the family, I will have to have the talk with her about knowing her surroundings, keeping her pepper spray handy and always knowing her escape route. My dad said of me, I do not worry about you as much as I do my other daughters because you always have a plan. Yet I am aware that one cannot plan for every contingency, and it just makes me so angry!
I can so relate to what she said about traumatic and shocking things happening and then those "How did I not see?" thoughts. Its been years for me now and I still get those thoughts sometimes. That is what got me into true crime stories and the wish to understand why would people chose to do these things and why do they happen. Crime Junkie is my first podcast ever and I am so happy to have found it, because there is so much I have learned. So much so that the lessons I learned through my own experience and the storries of others AND the CJ rules helped me help prevent a few bad situation happening in the life of some of my closest people. Because in that moment when it happens, its not just black and white for you and you need that voice of reason telling you: "No. Just NO! This is bad for you!"
Ana Kendrick did an AMAZING job directing this and acting in this! Honestly scary how many times this guy got let out and was allowed to keep killing. Def a story that needed to be told!
41:00 Thank you for this interview. Yes, I left an abusive marriage, and yes, they think they are the victims. Their image is so important to them. The image they portray, rather.
After I watch this interview I am going to go watch that movie. I e seen it on Netflix, it’s even on my list, so I am going to watch it. I LOVE LOVE Anna Kendrick. She beautiful, intelligent and brave af! I’m so glad she did this movie.
I JUST finished the movie and I came to find interviews with Anna Kendrick on youtube. The part about giving the number, in the 80s, as a teen, my friends and I memorized a random number and MANY TIMES creepy guys would ask us to repeat it and we DID because we had memorized this random number! This happened maybe once a MONTH! Just remembering this, 40 years later, makes my heart beat fast! This is a creepy movie, very well made, but quite scary. I watched it alone and to be honest, had to mute some parts and only read the subtitles (sorry Anna Kendrick!) just so true and so well acted. Also yay to my old colleague David Beairstro who got a small part in the movie!
i always just took my number and reversed 2 numbers around, on the minute off chance if i ever ran into the guy again, i can say oh, you reversed 2 numbers and then had the plan to reverse 2 more numbers around, but that never happened.
I really enjoyed this interview... and I immediately went and watched "Woman of the Hour." It was REALLY good. I didn't know much about Rodney's story, so after watching the movie I went down a rabbit hole online. Thank you both so much! And Ashley, I am also a person who doesn't watch movies/TV shoes more than once. I also rarely read a book more than once. I don't enjoy knowing the ending of things. So you are not alone!
I just watched five movies with Anna Kendrick starring in them back to back. I watched all the Pitch Perfect movies and in the air and then I just got through watching Mr. Wright. Man move movies were so awesome and crazy. But the one movie I didn’t necessarily enjoy that much was in the air because of the fact it didn’t have audio description and some of the parts I got a little confused about what was happening. But her acting was spot on. Hope one day she wins a Tony or Emmy or any kind of big award to show that she is an amazing actress singer and songwriter. PS I also have watched all of the troll movies multiple times.
Loved listening to this! Omg, I didn't even notice 50 min went by until now?? (New listener.) I have even more appreciation for Anna Kendrick's directing choices after listening to this. I think that that first scene puts the viewer on edge right away and sets them up to feel hypervigilant for the rest of the movie, which mimics the feeling women have all the time while walking thru the world. She really understood the "show don't tell" assignment! That, plus the fact that the movie manages to have lighthearted moments, plus the non-chronological pacing of the scenes and the untidy ending that was equal parts satisfying/triumphant (bc she escaped), and heartbreaking/uneasy (bc others didn't, abd bc the survivors will still live w trauma, and bc it took years to bring him to justice!!) ... All of those choices and techniques made for a movie that was very unique, but ultimately still felt more emotionally authentic than a lot of what we see in Hollywood nowadays. Thank u for this great conversation! I will be listening to more:)
Amazing movie. A woman's travels through a such a world of man landmines. From the guilt manipulation of the neighbor, the condescending men during auditions, the boyfriend not believing his girlfriend to the deadly predator. Been there.
The Netflix thumbnail was so recognizable that I skipped the show. I've seen and read enough about Rodney Alcala, and I'm kind of bored of his story. I will be watching it this evening! I love Anna Kendrick so much and after hearing the approach and that she is the director I'm sold on the idea that I need to revisit this story.
I thought the same thing when I saw the thumbnail but after watching I realized it was not real accurate but played mostly on the idea that a serial killer was on the dating game and didn't really portray even that accurately.
thank you to her for sharing so much and being so relatable its good for others to see people of her level of fame that they too go through the things just like everyday people... when she was talking about her ex it was like she was sharing my story too. and for her to make that film... the phone number scene is so important because men just do not get what women deal with and they say things like, "why dont you just say no, or give him a fake number or give your number" and its like which one of those answers will not get me killed and they scoff and gaslight us and are like oh you are being dramatic... well... no... we arent... IT HAPPENS
This is awesome! I really liked this movie and Anna did wonderful showing her fear toward this horrific murderer who was played very well by cutie Daniel Zovatto!
My daughters and I have watched all the Pitch Perfect movies no less than a dozen times each, cant believe Ashley and Rebel dont watch things more than once lol
Anna Kendrick what a difference respecting women and the emotion of the material then Blake lively with advertising her hair products and not getting the nature of abuse in her movie and making it like a tea party! Amazing job on that movie girl of the hour! Go see it it’s a thrill ride of very realistic fear to this day
That movie was so good. ❤🎉 I love Anna's comedic performances but her directing was phenomenal. Women can't afford the luxury of second guessing themselves.

I love that you could tell this movie was made by a woman. I was scared there was going to be r*pe p*rn like most movies that linger on the lifeless bodies of women like they're beautiful or hot. It was a respectful portrayal and showed that this could happen to anybody and it really isn't your fault. These men blend in so easily and have the complicity of every other man that lets them go free or even cover up their tracks. It reminded me a little of Promising Young Women.
I’m new to the directorial debut or even the film, but I’m picking up what you’re putting down I think it’s great because it is so true and the host made such a good point that her husband didn’t understand what she was so uptight about because they as a man he navigate through the world in such a different way I think this is a good time to point out why there’s a fundamental difference between men and women being police officers sure I think there’s absolutely a place for women in law-enforcement however I think it’s dangerous and reckless for women to be patrol officers and trying to be so equal we are not physically biologically equal to men. It’s just the fact it doesn’t make us inferior, but there has to bean understanding and this is a great place to put that just the way we are not equal navigating through the world great eye-opener all the way around
My husband didn’t quite get the parking lot scene but he understood the psychology behind the girl at the ending. We’ve got daughters, I made him sit and watch it with me. He was happy to do so but he never would’ve chosen it himself.
there is a very subtle detail almost at the end show casing this is from the female point of view. anna is moving out and she encounters the neighbor who was in the wrong for previous interaction. she's holding a bulky box and he has 1 small grocery bag, and yet instead of moving to the side to let her pass, which would be easier for him, she's still the one that has to move for HIM to pass. also, like many women, i totally understand when anna said about not being sure if you're paranoid or picking up on things. when i was 16 (in the 90's), i was either paranoid or very lucky, but i everyone was doing the aol instant message and talking to random people in chat rooms. i was talking to 1 guy, supposedly my age +1 or 2 years. and arranging for him to pick me up and us to drive to the beach. Mostly i think it was the van, as the inside was totally stripped out, but i got an uncomfortable feeling, and about 10 minutes after he picked me up, i made up some excuse why i had to go back. I am sure, i was being paranoid, but i have learned paranoid or not, to not stay in uncomfortable situations (learned later).
My brother complained about the first five minutes and how it made the rest of the movie “feel gross” and I was like. Yeah. It’s supposed to. You’re not supposed to feel good watching a man killing women.
I agree with Kendra on Chris Watts. He's so much like my ex. I think if I hadn't gotten out when I did, something like that could have happened to me. They've worked their whole life to be perceived as perfect and if something threatens that, it's as if their life is being threatened and they are victim.
I love that Anna donated the money she was going to make to Charities. Not wanting to cash in on a story about a Serial killer who hurt so many women says so much about her as a person.
yeah, I just looked it up, $11 million!

I have been binge watching since I have found you on TH-cam. Fantastic show and amazing interviews. Ashley I love your laugh.
thank you to her for sharing so much and being so relatable its good for others to see people of her level of fame that they too go through the things just like everyday people... when she was talking about her ex it was like she was sharing my story too. and for her to make that film... the phone number scene is so important because men just do not get what women deal with and they say things like, "why dont you just say no, or give him a fake number or give your number" and its like which one of those answers will not get me killed and they scoff and gaslight us and are like oh you are being dramatic... well... no... we arent... IT HAPPENS
I totally agree with Anna on the Chris Watts case. very insightful.
Ahhh I just watched Woman of the Hour yesterday and then this gets uploaded! 😍

This movie was incredible, that opening scene was 🔥
This is awesome! I really liked this movie and Anna did wonderful showing her fear toward this horrific murderer who was played very well by cutie Daniel Zovatto!
The movie was well done! It scared the crap out of me.

I absolutely love her work!!
Anna Kendrick what a difference respecting women and the emotion of the material then Blake lively with advertising her hair products and not getting the nature of abuse in her movie and making it like a tea party! Amazing job on that movie girl of the hour! Go see it it’s a thrill ride of very realistic fear to this day
This 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Did *not age well*.* 😳
Excellent interview!!
i just watched the movie and guys. she did a phenomenal job.
Anna looks out for the little guy❣️
That movie was so good. ❤🎉 I love Anna's comedic performances but her directing was phenomenal. Women can't afford the luxury of second guessing themselves.

@mrscoolwhipp Ah thanks so kind 🫶
Love her so much in Up In the Air
Anna was incredible in Up in the Air.
That’s good insight they are projecting shame but that’s extreme. Also when people think we’re serial killers that’s also interesting or psychopaths
The movie was amazing!❤
The way I’ve already watched Woman of the Hour twice.
If my hair allowed me to wear a hat without getting hat-hair I’d take it off to Anna Kendrick. The movie is very well made. 👒
@trypod Anna Kendrick falls asleep to your videos my guys lol 25:36
I was giggling at that too ❤😂
That’s good insight they are projecting shame but that’s extreme
I love her!!
Omg the Try Guys are hilarious I saw them live last month. Everyone should watch them
I adore you both!
I was not expecting a try guys reference in this video 😂
I love that you could tell this movie was made by a woman. I was scared there was going to be r*pe p*rn like most movies that linger on the lifeless bodies of women like they're beautiful or hot. It was a respectful portrayal and showed that this could happen to anybody and it really isn't your fault. These men blend in so easily and have the complicity of every other man that lets them go free or even cover up their tracks. It reminded me a little of Promising Young Women.
love anna kendrick and the try guys
I love Anna! This rules
I wonder if people really think I should be locked up and the key thrown away 😂
there is a very subtle detail almost at the end show casing this is from the female point of view. anna is moving out and she encounters the neighbor who was in the wrong for previous interaction. she's holding a bulky box and he has 1 small grocery bag, and yet instead of moving to the side to let her pass, which would be easier for him, she's still the one that has to move for HIM to pass.
also, like many women, i totally understand when anna said about not being sure if you're paranoid or picking up on things. when i was 16 (in the 90's), i was either paranoid or very lucky, but i everyone was doing the aol instant message and talking to random people in chat rooms. i was talking to 1 guy, supposedly my age +1 or 2 years. and arranging for him to pick me up and us to drive to the beach.
Good movie, and yes, the parking scene was tense!
Brilliant movie!
i need anna to start a podcast asap!!
Gilmore girls & the office for me.
The movie was stunning in so many ways
My brother complained about the first five minutes and how it made the rest of the movie “feel gross” and I was like. Yeah. It’s supposed to. You’re not supposed to feel good watching a man killing women.
I will watch Mr. RIGHT 193649264026402615394 times over over over again
24 days fucking SLAY Anna 💅🏻🥹💞
I agree with Kendra on Chris Watts. He's so much like my ex. I think if I hadn't gotten out when I did, something like that could have happened to me. They've worked their whole life to be perceived as perfect and if something threatens that, it's as if their life is being threatened and they are victim.
