  • This is the very first video Alex and myself have made, we are hoping to share our craftsmanship with our students. Alex is an extremely competent craftsman who has work for many royal families around the world. Educational video of large mortise and tenon joints and bridle joints.

    That's a odd chain morticer makes the bottom more square and less breakout on one of the sides. Good vid👍🏿

    • @richardlee2488
      @richardlee2488 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a mafell.
      They are amazing tools.
      If your interested Northwood forestry in Sussex is closing and have a morticer and couple of big planers and also a special narrow bandsaw as some of the lots. I think auction closes mid May 2012.
      If you like turning there are some once in a lifetime lots of oak and elm burr. Many are too big to lift on your own.

    This has to be the go to video for timber framing. Having said that, at 10:34 that was scary how the mortise was showing and only just covered. Or is that normal? Seemed like you slightly back cut with your chisel on those cheeks to make a really nice clean joint.
    Oh lastly, so nice to see someone actually cutting everything with space to breathe. I've seen so many of these where the person is beating the crap out of it to make it go in. I know it probably will shrink up a bit, but it just doesn't look good.

    Fantastic workmanship well done . Am going to attempt a oak frame porch how tight do the joints have to be . Looking forward to another video 👍

    • @bigdec1
      @bigdec1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds great, your mortices need to be deeper than the tenon to allow for shrinkage.

    Great video, very instructive. Am going to build my own oak lean to garden canopy. What hand tools do you recommend?.

    • @bigdec1
      @bigdec1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry for not getting back to you, if I was building a lean to with limited tools, I’d probably use a drill to remove as much waste as possible from your mortises. A handsaw and a nice large wood chisel.

    What offset do you use for the dowel holes in the mortice and tenon?

  • @shinigamilee5915
    @shinigamilee5915 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Have you ever tried lightly scoring the edges with a razor blade by laying it flat on the surface before doing the final chisel work?
    I wonder if it might make the edges just a little bit cleaner and save a few minutes for you.

      My wife said she found it dizzying too. When I made this video my students were working on basic timber joints, and we were making this to show what they could become. This is the first film I've ever shot and edited. It's on TH-cam so my students can access it. Thank you for your comments. I think that I did a little better with my second video. I'm the big guy in it. Please have a look and tell me what you think. Many thanks Declan
