- Full Ashtray is down-and-dirty blues using the slap bass style. I wrote this one for my Father, who had a hard life and lived on three packs of Marlboro a day. His ending wasn't easy. If this was performed, much could also be read for impact, in Johnny Cash style.
Full Ashtray
Verse 1:
I heard our memories don’t die
As we slowly pass away,
When our sun has set down on us....,,
And we turn to moldy clay.
A preacher knocked and told me
Not to worry yesterday……
So I simply told him,
“Buddy, you go, maybe I'll just stay.”
Chorus:
Took my last cigarette
Like it was liquid gold,
Though I’m coughing out
My weary lungs like stones,
My hands are goin' shakin’,
I can't hardly even hold--
That old ashtray leftover
From my Grandad’s long lost days…….
It will be the only thing
That God has saved.
Verse 2:
Most my friends have gone to wander
In some dreary dark cold graves,
Except for hostages
Bound for nursing homes--
Where nurses pick their bones,
While the owners steal their pay.
Some social worker offered me
A cell there yesterday………….
So I told her,” Hit the door and
Lady go get laid.”
Bridge:
Wished for one last time
To see my son at home.
He gave up on me,
And left so far away.
The misery I caused
God knows that I regret,
And there's so much left to say.......
But now it’s just me sitting all alone………
Staring at my Grandad’s full ashtray.
