As a Canadian I love this, the dad of a buddy of mine was trapped for a couple days above the arctic circle, blizzard, -60c to -70c. Him and his friend survived those conditions in a snow cave they built, warmed with their body heat.
Also having a candle burning is the equivalent of another person's body heat in a snow shelter, just throwing that out there. Could save someone's life.

The only thing I would add is maybe used the trash bags as extra flooring to insulate against the snow or as a door way.
I thought fir a minute there, he was going to use one of them as a bottom baggie, and pull it on like pants over his bottom half...😂🤣😂
I don't believe people understand the value of your content. It is literally a free how to keep your a-- alive tutorial. I use at least 4 knots I learned from you and Canterbury every time I'm out hunting. Not to mention the minimalist emergency shelter kit I've added to my bag that I adapted from you two as well. These vids are the best. A few items, keeping it simple and reasonable. These seem like the structures people are realistically going to build if out in the woods unintentionally for a day or two. Awesome winter wonderland!

I like knowing how long it takes to build the shelter. This type of shelter could come in handy in an emergency. I certainly wouldnt want to spend more than a couple hours building a shelter in an emergency situation. The steak and eggs looked delicious.
This is the one I personally have been waiting for. Your shelter was built precisely and elegantly. Over here in Connecticut the scene is just like where you shot your video. I also enjoy your culinary segment. It always is a hearty mans type meal. Your videos are never wasted on me. Enjoy every one.

Now that is an excellent example of an emergency shelter in heavy snow. As a Canadian this resonates with my survival concerns in the winter. Thank you!
Trips me out every time I see you tie a bowline! I have been a professional mariner for 25 years and never seen it tied that way. Like I said before, I always learn something!
This reminds of being a kid, & after big snows & the snow plow came, we dug out an entire tunnel system with rooms. We poured water to freeze our rooms... It was great! Then my dad came home and broke them up! I guess he thought they would collapse on us. But I loved it in there! Warm, & fun.

Marco, the German folk are some of the kindest, even the Schwabishe! Once they get to know you, they are fantastic people. We tried so hard to learn German while stationed there, the whole family. My youngest went to German kindergarten. I still correspond with the Great German friends we made! The Very Best…Bill

Good morning, Mr Kelly! I don’t think I’ll ever purposely go out camping in snow like this, but at least with your guidance, I’ll be somewhat prepared if I ever find myself in a situation. Also, I love that you get up and enjoy breakfast/coffee and don’t just rush right out after waking.
Snow is one the best insulators in the Winter.

@@1kuzgun1 , to me, the ventilation seems adequate but a heater unnecessary. Snow is a surprisingly good insulator.
@@1kuzgun1 I hear the same noise as he is eating the breakfast steak and eggs. Perhaps using the stove to heat water for coffee/tea.

Good idea putting that second reflective tarp down on the ground and making like a bathtub floor, that will reflect more of your body heat back to you. 👍

Rightnow I'm in Northeastern Ohio looking at 18inches of fresh snow in my backyard with a stack of covered aged firewood out behind the garage and shed.. its 21 degrees with a slight wind and I am tempted to go out and construct horseshoe shaped tarped snow shelter. Thanks Shawn for how you inspire, answer the mail and execute out of the box. If you did it in 2 hours.. it'll take me 4 first time... man, I really admire you.
Your big builds are awesome, but THESE are the ones I like to watch. Keep the emergency blankets and a big wool blanket in your truck and boom - instant shelter if you get stuck. Nice work.

My favorite time of year to go camping is winter time. If you can insulate yourself from the cold ground and block the wind you can stay warm. Great job corporal love your videos keep it up.

As one of the few who made it through US Army Winter Warfare School, I learned that in extreme cold weather, the most important piece of equipment is a positive attitude.

Finding natural resources for emergency shelter building is always a concern. Snow is one of the best resources as you'll most likely never run out of it depending on where you live. Here in upstate New York we could build a skyscraper out of the stuff. It's insulating properties are grossly underestimated.
I remember building snow forts and caves as a kid and they were always warm. Steak and eggs for breakfast. How can you beat that....even out in the cold? Cool AF!

Ah, yes! The three emergency tarp snow trench. Used it every time we went to the field in Alaskan winters. Mine were OD rather than international orange. It is all good for cold rainy conditions with only slight nodificationas well. Thank you for the trip down memory lane!

I've used jet stoves to heat tents in the winter. It won't make it warm, but it definitely takes the edge off. I think it would work well in this shelter.

There is no snow in my country I really want to travel there. I like every episode of your video. You taught me to want to go into the forest.
My memories of cold come in two varieties: At work at Chanute AFB, and as a kid in central Pennsylvania with nearly no kit in a formerly clear cut pine forest. The ramp was colder, but the nights in the woods held a lot more fear, and a lot more effort needed. Your snow videos are so nostalgic, many thanks!

This. Shawn, exactly what I’ve been looking for.
A couple tips: If one didn’t have the extra reflective tarp under the sleeping pad, one could have chopped off some low furred spruce branches and laid them out lengthwise on the shelter floor, then spread a couple drum liners on top to block moisture, and then add the pad.
As for the air inlet and outlet, if one wanted to cut down the speed of the wind going in, put a right angle bend in both ways. You still get ventilation, but also get better temp control.
If you are a hunter or know a hunter, get a big deer hide tanned on one side and leave the hair on the other side. Put this on top of the sleeping pad or underneath for extra insulation resulting in more warmth and no body heat sucked away by the cold ground. It is even possible to waterproof the tanned side by impregnating it with a suitable silicon product. Use 2 or 3 of these hides and you will be warm and comfortable.

I can help yyou with the bag fill. If you stand with your heels on the edge, hold the top open with 1 hand and scrape the snow in with the other. I do leaves that way. You could also just use a tarp to carry the snow. Same principal as the bag.

Video suggestion: You may have done this in the past, but I'd love to see a video of what you recommend carrying for anyone going out into the wilderness to do some bush craft. What's the basics? What do you add for cooler, then cold weather? So many coats are cotton, aside from your wool coat, what are some other suggestions for cold weather gear that isn't cotton?

Excellent shelter, couldn't tell you didn't plan this build. Personal thought, a few videos back you bushcraft a candle holder, one of those and a small candle would have really warmed you up, don't ya think? GOD BLESS and stay safe!

Being in Alaska in a arctic light infantry battalion l know snow is a great insulator. Ask any Eskimo.
Being able to pack snow over the top would definitely increase the insulation factor. Most people fail to realize the insulation properties of snow.
