Have you ever been forced to leave your bike?
What was going to be an easy ride on a nice dirt pass, turned into a difficult situation!
Join me as I ride from Barkly East in South Africa towards the border to Lesotho. On the way I take a detour via the Joubert’s pass. The Joubert's pass is part of the Ben 10 Challenge in the Southern Drakensberg mountains. This is going to be my 5th and last pass, as I had decided to cross into Lesotho.
The Joubert’s pass is supposed to be a relatively easy gravel road but there has been unusual amounts of rain this year, so I got into trouble.

I got a smile when you said you wished you had a little shovel 😁 I never go anywhere without mine but I must be honest, I've used it more for going to the toilet than to dig out of the mud 🤪I love the fact that you wash your bike whenever you have the opportunity. I am a firm believer in doing this because it gives you a chance to make sure everything is still good and catch potential issues before they become a big problem. I always laugh when people think it is macho to keep the bike as dirty as possible. Look after it and it will look after you.

I know you now know this, but don't stop or slow too much at a mud pit! Keep your momentum up! You were lucky there was help close by! My bike is heavier so I carry a "ratchet jack" that will lift 600 lbs.

One of the reasons, when on motorcycle, I do ride roads or at least something less offroady 🙂 Tumbs up for perseverance, and MUD is good for you 🙂

Now I have obviously no way of knowing, but I guess the moment the mud trap caught you was when the rear wheel fell into the pit and you shut down the throttle. I see many off roaders do that in their videos, and it always seems to be the moment when they get trapped. I would think that keeping the throttle open and keeping the wheel spinning while the bike still has momentum would pull you through such situations. The force that stops your bike on the rising side of the pit also helps your rear wheel bite into the ground and get traction. …and the friction force of a sliding wheel is the force vertical to the friction-producing surface times friction coefficient time the velocity of the sliding body. Faster slide=More force.

Hi Henriette. As a solo adventurer you should consider using a Motowinch from Eastbound. The Motorcycle Hoist MotoWinch LC1500 would fit your bike. It's lightweight and it is really effortless. You can watch demo on internet. It can saves you when you're alone and far from everything.

If one needed to prepare a bike 🏍 adventure like this one maybe from Zambia 🇿🇲 to South Africa 🇿🇦 how much can it cost 💲
That's a very difficult question to answer. You could basically buy a local boda bike and do the adventure or get a 1250 GS. The price difference would be enormous.
But for me, the cost was 7200 usd for the bike (in Denmark) plus 3000 in extra parts. Then camping gear on top of that. When on the road, my daily budget to cover everything (visas, road tax, petrol, insurance, food, accommodation, simcards, activities, data, customs fees) is 50 usd per day. Some do it cheaper, some spend a lot more.
