My favorite Katy Perry fact is that she dated the brother of Paramore's Taylor York when she was a teenager. His dad worked at a Christian record label in Nashville so it makes sense that they would have run in the same circles.

For sure! I FOUND Paramore through Christian Katy Perry. I listened to Christian punk, emo, and scene music and followed a lot of the bands Live Journals and they would often repost Paramore and that’s how I discovered Paramore. A year or two later Misery Business came out, shortly after that Katy Perry debuted with You’re So Gay. Kind of crazy in retrospect.

I met Katy backstage at the last day of Warped tour in LA, she stood outside her bus and took pics with everyone who wanted one. She was extremely sweet and although I dont dig all her music I will always remember how she treated her fans that day.

Here's another wild fact--Katy Perry sings on the 2006 POD song Goodbye For Now, and performs in both the music video and one of those late night talk shows...as a background vocalist. Crazy!!

I can’t believe Katy Hudson toured with Earthsuit (which they deserve there own video as well) Earthsuit then went on to become MuteMath. When she moved back here we dated and by then taylor swift was getting huge. I then learned they were friends. She went on multiple morning shows with Taylor and has many pics together and got me a happy bday call from Taylor even though I’m not really a fan it was cool. Well she also met and got to know Katy and they have many pics together too. Crazy world

I had this album. Sold it on eBay at the peak of Perry's popularity. Not a good thing as the buyer reported they never received it and I had to refund the whole thing lol. At least I kept the MP3s on my computer, so even today this is clacking around in my iTunes. As the video states, it's not a bad album. You can definitely feel the fingerprints of late 90s/early 00s Christian music production values on it-mixing the voice to be more prominent, more simplistic instrumentation in the background in case any of the songs end up blowing up in the praise & worship scene-but it's definitely worth a listen as more than just a piece of Katy Perry ephemera.
I don't know what sort of history exists for Christian labels during that time period and how they stacked against each other, but as someone who was knee-deep in Christian music at the time, I would not call Pamplin a top-5 Christian label. Red Hill wasn't even a blip on the radar.

7:10 And I’ll add- I owned this! One of the original released CDs. I BEGGED my parents to order it off her website. She was being penned the “Christian Fiona Apple” and I was obsessed with Fiona Apple and at that time adult contemporary was shifting to Michelle Branch, Vanessa Carlton, very poppy. The Sad Girls weren’t sad anymore. And I was reading Seventeen or YM and there’s was an article on Christian Rock that featured her! AND that’s how I got into Christian Rock because oddly it was the only music that was still…trying to have depth??? That’s not fair. But it was BIG pop like Britney, N*Sync, BSB, Flex Hip-hop (the shift when hip-hop became less about black struggle or identity and more about black luxury), OR angry/spicy white boy music, Eminem, Korn, etc. So as an Afrasian/Austronesian Catholic in predominantly white rural Nevada Mormon country and a recent Social Anxiety Disorder and chronic illness diagnosis I did not fit into any of the aforementioned categories and gravitated towards Christian rock for its melancholic and sometimes existential musings. So I love this album. If I’m having a bad day, I turn on Trust in Me and I’m ok.

At the time Katy Hudson came out, I was working for a small-town California newspaper. There was a huge church in the town that brought in Christian acts for concerts all the time and I interviewed every one that came through. Katy was one of them. At the time, I listened to her album and thought great voice... but the rest of it. Meh. I don't listen to Christian music or pop music (I prefer mostly hard rock and metal) . Years later, new career for me, long gone from that small town living in San Francisco, Katy Perry blows up. She was already big, but I didn't listen to pop, so I knew of the name, heard the hits here and there, but never paid attention to it. One night me and my roommates are watching some concert festival thing on TV, and she comes on. I was watching and listening to her for the first time while really paying attention and said to my roommates "She sounds a lot like a Christian singer I interviewed years ago." About 60 seconds later just listening to her and watching her, I said "That's her." My roommate, who was huge into Perry, said "No way. You interviewed Katy Perry." I replied "No, I interviewed a girl named Kristy Hudson" (I had mis-remembered the first name). "That's her. She is, or was at one time, a Christian singer." My roommate didn't believe it. I went into my files and pulled the old article out. "Oh, her name was Katy Hudson. That has to be her." The article had pictures and my roommate looked at them and said "Oh shit, that is her." She went out to Amoeba Records the next day and found a used copy of the record for $1... I also interviewed Jennifer Knapp as well. Haven't heard that name in 20+ years.

I'm friends with the guy that did the graphic design for this record. He told me the story of meeting her in a meeting with the label. She was there for part of the meeting and then had to go somewhere and left. After she left, he told them there is no way they will be able to control her. She's too creative and focused on what she wants to do. When she came out as "Katy Perry", he wasn't surprised at all.

I guess I've never went back and rewatched the Cupid's Chokehold video since the song came out, I didn't know Katy Perry was in that video, 'cause I wouldn't have known who she was back then. Also with Cupid's Chokehold, it took me like a decade and change until I realized that song's chorus/main vocal hook (provided by Patrick Stump) was taken from an existing song, Supertramp's "Breakfast in America". I knew of Supertramp from listening to oldies stations in my area, but of the 4 singles off their Breakfast in America album, the oldies stations just never played the title track. I never looked into Supertramp beyond what I heard on those stations, so I never clocked the interpolation in Cupid's Chokehold til an embarrassingly long time later.
