    Great vid Dan. I don't think there is the perfect running pack. My favorite one is my Montane VIA Jaws 10 as it's no frills and very light, but it's far from perfect. My other one which I have used pretty much for the last 18 months is my Ultimate Direction Ultra Vest 5.0. Again though not perfect although I have modified it a little which involved taking it to a Seamstress to take out a couple of zips and add elastic. Also made a tiny pocket which was a waste of time a bit bigger. The hand held water bottle seems a lot more popular in the ultra races in America from what i have seen watching all the races I seen on TH-cam.

    • @DanRuns
      @DanRuns  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did ask on a few videos about the handheld arrangement in ultra races in USA, but the runners who did reply were insistent they always used mandatory kit (including a vest). I think i'm used to seeing the Jim Walmsley efforts where he seems to refuel via handheld at each station and power ahead! As you say, I think it's about finding a happy medium with a vest and making adjustments as needed

    Your comments are appreciated. If you are looking for a vest with more access, I purchased the Salomon adv skin 12 for the same purpose. So many areas are accessible while running in addition very large storage via a zipper. If it doesn’t fit in the Salomon you may need a suitcase!

    • @DanRuns
      @DanRuns  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much for the recommendation. I did have a Salomon vest when I started running but never got on with it. That said, I didn't really know what I was doing and it was almost certainly ill fitting and not correctly used! When I figure out the next adventure i'll get into store and try one out. I do love Salomon products so i'd be hopeful that a vest would do the trick also!

    Nothing is ever perfect. By your next one your ideas will have changed again. I’d have been interested to hear about how different you felt going into it with the higher milage. More confident? After your break do you have a weekly milage target you want to hit?

    • @DanRuns
      @DanRuns  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I felt exceptionally good going into this ultra. I knew that my mileage wasn’t high enough to deliver anything remotely fast and my longest run in hindsight should have been 35 miles I think. I’ve never really been one for specific weekly mileage to be honest, so I’ll likely first set out to build a schedule of runs weekly to incorporate all the skills I require for whichever rest I pick next. Thereafter I’ll trust in my ability to be able to run at a higher mileage than I did this time around (if it calls for it)

    Hi Dan, great video! Just a question on salt tablets, did you have any salt in your TailWind and gels and if so would you say that additional salt tablets are absolutely necessary? Thank you! Johan

    • @DanRuns
      @DanRuns  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a good question. Tailwind and Unived gels do have content which supports the body in a similar way to salt tablets and I don't 100% know if the salt tablets were the saving grace, but I had been recommended to take them by runners who had done the route in the past (albeit it on a warmer day). Had I not had any sensation of cramp I would have probably not used them. I would like to explore them more and see if they were worthwhile or not!

    Hats off to Ultra runners! I am yet to run my 1st marathon. I have scheduled three 5K's, and capping off the year with a 10K in November. Half marathon to come in 1/22. I have a question: I did an experiment. I ran the same distance in several different shoes differing in weight and purpose. I found my time to be the same regardless. Now, I am a slow runner--- 11 min/mi currently and probably at my fastest a 10 minute miler. Could it be that I should enjoy well cushioned running shoes and forget having a rotation? I mean if I run just as fast in a Clifton or even a Bondi, why not enjoy the protection. By the way, I continue to really enjoy my Hoka Challenger ATR 6's. They are definitely needed for off road running.

    • @DanRuns
      @DanRuns  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not someone who actually has a rotation. At the beginning of this training I had three shoes - Nike Pegasus 36 shield, Hoka Torrent and ATR 6. The Nike's always felt a little snug, yet fast and light when worn, the Hoka's didn't really ever suit the terrain to use them regularly and the ATR 6 were such an all-rounder I just stuck with them throughout. Now, if I was to focus on road running I would use the ATR for long run and a more road-specific shoe for the speed sessions and race day (like Rocket X, Carbon X etc...). I recognise rotation is important but there is also a financial impact to that

    • @raysollarsthehappyjogger5907
      @raysollarsthehappyjogger5907 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DanRuns Well, I have put out this question to some reviewers that are avid road runners, though they are far, far faster than myself. In the end, perhaps I will just have to trust my own experience which shows that racing shoes give me no advantage. I don't need the more lightweight shoe because I run slow anyway at age 64, 6ft. and 178lbs. As you say, budget is a factor. If I can be a two shoe guy, I will just have my ATR 6's and a Clifton, Bondi, or currently I got a Mach 4 and call it a day.

    • @DanRuns
      @DanRuns  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@raysollarsthehappyjogger5907 I think you're doing the right thing first and foremost by finding a shoe you're comfortable in and that does the job for you. With so many shoes released yearly it's hard to keep up with what's best! Running shoe shops for me are a minefield!

    • @davenapier
      @davenapier 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think the main benefit to you Raymond if the shoes are not giving you any performance advantage at the moment is that having a small shoe rotation can help with the midsole. If you are running regularly in the same shoes then the midsole can become compressed by not have time to recover between runs. Having at least 2 different sets of shoes will allow one to recover whilst you are running in the next. Can be the same brand / model if you are happy with what you have.

    • @raysollarsthehappyjogger5907
      @raysollarsthehappyjogger5907 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@davenapier Excellent idea Dave! A dual pair of the same shoe I like would suffice. Their are all around models that cover the road basis. The Hoka Mach 4 is one and it has some good cushion!
