Back in the day my drama teacher did this. She made it plain since it was a school setting and we had a strong community theater program. So, she was gonna cast folks who wouldn’t try out or get cast in the community theater programs.
Our directors daughter got a lead role in the one musical I performed in but we were a small school and she was actually crazy fucking good (if I had been the director I would have given her the same role) with a lot of experience in singing, dancing, and stage performances. I was actually more concerned about one of the “token white boys” in our cast, because he had no singing experience at all and was supposed to sing a solo and a duet (and he was struggling during practices A LOT). For me It was the AD's best friend/directors favorite student and basically the AD's entire friend group. I was so mad i wasn't even considered even though I'm lowkey obsessed w the production
There was literally a huge problem at my school because for my senior musical the teacher only cast underclassman in all named roles and not a single upperclassman, which they were 10, got a single role mind you three of the upperclassman literally were going to college for performing arts and had roles in community theater so it’s not like they weren’t talented. She also refused to write a recommendation letter for the assistant Director, who had pretty much directed six of the musicals during her time in high school.
That is horrible. I hope the AD got a good recommendation from someone. And hopefully she didn't give leading roles to the upperclassmen because they were busy with everything that comes with graduating, but still wanted to participate. But seeing how she treated the AD, that's probably not the case.
Our HS band director was like that. Couldn't even remember who was a senior, so he'd exclude them from things they were supposed to be involved in, but then he'd give Band Member of the Year award to a middle schooler that he'd recruited to fill seats. ffs

@dinobro5075 Pretty much. The 8th graders love everyone as family, but we are learning, oh, our teacher is not following through with what she said. My sixth grade year: 8th graders had the biggest role. 7th: 6th grader. 8th: Me, an 8th grader.
At my school, I hate doing plays because all the roles go to the seniors. No matter how much more talented a freshman, sophomore, or junior is, the senior always gets picked just because they are a senior. When I did Mean Girls, 2 years ago when I was a freshman, basically all the leads were seniors. There were so many people that were more talented then all the seniors. Since I was a freshman, I didn’t even have a slight chance at all, which I think is stupid
Seniors get the leads because it’s their last year in a musical… Freshman, Sophomores, and Juniors all get another chance to be in a production. Seniors also have the most experience (usually; I don’t think it’s right to cast seniors just because they’re seniors when they don’t do a good job). Sometimes, it’s less about talent and more about paying your dues. It would be extremely frustrating for a senior’s last musical to have a cast where a bunch of freshman and sophomores got the leads.
@@astarryglitch I don’t really think that’s fair though. Sure, seniors should get top consideration. But a tone deaf senior should not be casted as a lead just because they are a senior. All the talented kids get leads and I'm honestly fine with that they make the play better than what it would have been, I'm in a smaller school tho this is referring to a school close by, for us it's like your forced to come along weather you like going on stage or not
this was how it was when i did youth community theatre 😭😭 the leads all got taken by kids whose parents did behind the scenes stuff and half of them couldnt even hold their notes like huhhhh
In my high school we don’t have a lot of boys so the same guy keeps getting lead roles since he’s the only experienced one, I’m not lying he got cast as Warbucks in Annie and I spent over 8 hours a weekend helping him memorize his lines and he still managed to stumble through the play
I got an awards and scholarships for my art when I graduated but I didn’t make the cut for the drama art crew. The teacher that was choosing the crew was an absolute wad who openly had favourites and bullied others. I was on art crew for a smaller production and would be painting while the head of the crew would be playing video games in the back. The sets always looked great but no thanks to any of the favourites, yet they got all the credit.
There's a bunch of really talented people at my school (and a few who aren't that talented) who get into everything. I am not one of them and I'm sad. Edit: I should note that the talented people think that I'm talented and are trying to get me into stuff and I love them for it
The cast list just went up for our school’s production of Newsies and, for contect, I’m a very out butch lesbian. I had auditioned for Davey. I got Spot Conlon and the token straight boys got all the main characters.
One boy in my theater group didn't even want to be there and showed it but because he was a favorite he got all the lead support roles and it always annoyed the hell out of me. Kids who where amazing but may have not been general attractive/popular would get passed while this kid would go on stage with a bored face and barely get through his lines because he was popular.
No because my teacher makes her daughter (WHOS IN THE CLUB, AND IS DEFINITELY BAIS) make the cast lists and literally nobody who’s not friends with her got a lead-
See, the one school musical we did that didn't get cancelled or whatever was Alice in Wonderland. Surprisingly, most of the cast was year 8s and 9s (including me. It was a bunch of 13-15 year olds lmao) with one year 12. Everyone was actually pretty good but I'm assuming it was most people's first time on a proper stage so they didn't quite know how to project yet. (We also only had 4 microphones, one stayed permanently with Alice (the year 12), one with the White Rabbit, and the other two went to whoever was most important in the scene. Which means in my two scenes, you couldn't hear anyone without a microphone because I was a, the Queen of Hearts, and B, one of the only people projecting. Sorry for drowning everyone out, if you're reading this and we went to the same school ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)
It's one thing to complain about a lack of mics. It is another to be rude about new actors learning. That is disrespectful and I hope you grow out of that.
Our 2 lead the girl can sing but can’t act and has only been in one show and our guy can’t sing can’t read off a script and can’t act + both of them have add no feelings to their lines and our leads bff also can sing but can’t act either oh yeah our show is newsies 😭
It’s a nightmare if Jack and Katherine can’t do the role well! There is a girl in my school who only auditions for musicals (understandable, they are more fun to do) because she is a singer, but she can act just fine. Also, who do you play?
I’m sadly just dorthey one of Katherine’s rich friends but I got a call back for katherine :( but a lot of people said that I was gonna be Katherine and then well it didn’t happen + she’s one of my dream roles 😭
My school had the token straight kid, but he ABSO-F*CKING-LUTELY deserved the main character, whilst I somehow got fan-favorite side villains with questionably “gay?” musical numbers
I got so used to the cliquey inner circle mentality of my old director that when we got a new director, I auditioned just for kicks. I was so used to being passed over, I didn’t even check the call backs list. Turns out I was on it but I lost my chance because I didn’t show up to call backs. Learned a very important lesson about assumptions and shooting myself in the foot!😂
the token straight tenor in my college class literally never even bothered learning the script and just improvised the parts he didn't remember (leaving the rest of the cast to try and make his dialogue make sense, bc he wasn't even slightly saying the right thing) and yet he got cast as the male lead every time until he finished the course. it was so endlessly frustrating
The funniest thing is because my director at any theater I go to know that I’ll be “happy” with anything, they’ll give some of tne more diva like kids the roles and I know this because all of those directors have either told me so themselves or told my mom and she told me.
when i was in highschool we we did to do alice in wonderland and i was supposed to get queen of hearts ( that’s what the cast list said when posted) and then the directors daughter got my understudy ( the school had like six or seven that would vote to try and stop teachers from rigging but it doesn’t go past initial casting) but i left the second rehearsal early because i had a family member put on the hospital AND SHE GAVE MY ROLE to her daughter bc i “ wasn’t taking it seriously “
HERES A STORYTIME POOKIES!! (fun fact I'm actually a new thetre kid lol): basically we started having theatre classes, along with gym and music bc we dont have an art teacher. Our theatre teacher was in the lion king on Broadway! We saw the opening of Hamilton and the first day she taught us. Today we had auditions unexpectedly. I decided to audition and it was a hamilton song abt his shot I forgot what it was called lol. I actually ate and got the role of madison!! So yayyyy I didn't watch hamilton yet im gonna watch it on youtube since I don't got Disney lmao. Anyways yayyy I'm happy js lemme know what i need to know lol. There's performers from each class and we're only performing for my class lol
I remember being so frustrated in school and the first years of university when all the many talented girls had to fight for the few female parts, while the big male part simply went to, like, the slightly less bad guy of the two that showed up. Thankfully, in recent years our direcihave beem much more likely to cast gender-blind and it's become a whole lot fairer and the cast much more well-rounded in consequence.
I literally tried out for Anastasia and this girl who literally BULLIED me in like 1-5th grade got like a big role and she like isn't good either and I DIDNT EVEN GET IN

1 ok, he’s good
2 ok…
3 RRRARARAGAGAHAHAHAHAH
I always get the lead so I feel like one the “oH sHEs JusT a FAvoRItE” or something but I swear I’m just fit for the roles and my singing is fit for Annie😭🙏
All the talented kids get leads and I'm honestly fine with that they make the play better than what it would have been, I'm in a smaller school tho this is referring to a school close by, for us it's like your forced to come along weather you like going on stage or not
Bruh but like my brother is always a villain in them
Foreshadowing....👀
The director of the show I’m in is the mother of the main character 💀
At my theater, the people that get main rules are like really good but it’s also they always get the main ones
Im glad that my director is actually fair, and she doesnt pick any of her kids for the lead unless theyre suitable for the role
WHY IS IT ALWAYS RIGGED (except it technically doesn’t matter bc im a stagehand- BUT-)
I have never had this problem, thankfully. My theatre experience has been wholesome, and we do talent-based casting.
For mine it’s usually our chorus teacher’s favorite student
this was how it was when i did youth community theatre 😭😭 the leads all got taken by kids whose parents did behind the scenes stuff and half of them couldnt even hold their notes like huhhhh
In my high school we don’t have a lot of boys so the same guy keeps getting lead roles since he’s the only experienced one, I’m not lying he got cast as Warbucks in Annie and I spent over 8 hours a weekend helping him memorize his lines and he still managed to stumble through the play
In my school the teacher has a real knack for picking absolutely the worst person for a main part
I'm auditioning for my first school musical and the seniors are organizing it with the help of a teacher advisor so hopefully there's no favorites 🤑
The last one is so real 😂
omggg the madison beer vinyl in the back💗💗
I got an awards and scholarships for my art when I graduated but I didn’t make the cut for the drama art crew.
Hey, Spot's awesome!
@caril.9384 I never said he wasn’t =>
I also got the MOST femme character in the musical 😭
One boy in my theater group didn't even want to be there and showed it but because he was a favorite he got all the lead support roles and it always annoyed the hell out of me. Kids who where amazing but may have not been general attractive/popular would get passed while this kid would go on stage with a bored face and barely get through his lines because he was popular.
POV: when you get the understudy and the girl that got it wasn’t even good
No because my teacher makes her daughter (WHOS IN THE CLUB, AND IS DEFINITELY BAIS) make the cast lists and literally nobody who’s not friends with her got a lead-
that one tonedeaf girl who gets a lead every time named junie
I’m sadly just dorthey one of Katherine’s rich friends but I got a call back for katherine :( but a lot of people said that I was gonna be Katherine and then well it didn’t happen + she’s one of my dream roles 😭
reallll 😭😭😭
My school had the token straight kid, but he ABSO-F*CKING-LUTELY deserved the main character, whilst I somehow got fan-favorite side villains with questionably “gay?” musical numbers
My guy best friend does theatre. I think he can make it to broad way personally cause he always gets the lead role!!! He’s such a baddie
there’s gonna be someones ex on every cast list lol.
Theater kid. So your parents never have to guess whether you're gay or not
help as a dance kid i relate, we started choreography yesterday and the teacher's pet got put FRONT AND CENTER. that'll really help her ego 🤦♀️
I got a fair amount of big roles in high school and my parents were volunteers so I always felt so stressed that everyone would think it was that 😭
Oh, yeah, i just got an ensemble role because of favourites.
Real!
My friend's dad works at the theater,so my friend always gets a major role.
Im still so proud of her though, not even jealoys.. just proud.
the token straight tenor in my college class literally never even bothered learning the script and just improvised the parts he didn't remember (leaving the rest of the cast to try and make his dialogue make sense, bc he wasn't even slightly saying the right thing) and yet he got cast as the male lead every time until he finished the course. it was so endlessly frustrating
The first two are the same for me 💀💀💀💀💀
The funniest thing is because my director at any theater I go to know that I’ll be “happy” with anything, they’ll give some of tne more diva like kids the roles and I know this because all of those directors have either told me so themselves or told my mom and she told me.
As a Tech theatre kid, MY EX AND THIS IDIOT IS IN A DAMN PLAY CALLED EVERYMAN 😭
Specifically school pays, so rigged for no reason 😭
Oh this is too real my dude...too real 😅
I love this so much ❤ and the Hamilton reference was on point 👏
Me not even making ensemble spring of senior year: (it was in 2011 but I’m still bitter)
when i was in highschool we we did to do alice in wonderland and i was supposed to get queen of hearts ( that’s what the cast list said when posted) and then the directors daughter got my understudy ( the school had like six or seven that would vote to try and stop teachers from rigging but it doesn’t go past initial casting) but i left the second rehearsal early because i had a family member put on the hospital AND SHE GAVE MY ROLE to her daughter bc i “ wasn’t taking it seriously “
Actually screw that director you deserve so much better what the fuck 💀
when those three are the same personnnnnn
The way this literally just happened to me😭 the same two people always get the main roles
When I was in HS, I was ENRAGEEEDDD when this one kid got the lead in every show since freshman year 🙄
This is describes the leads in my school’s production of Footloose perfectly 😂😂😂
It’s always the token straight tenor boy frfr he’s got the lead for the past 2 years 💀
I remember being so frustrated in school and the first years of university when all the many talented girls had to fight for the few female parts, while the big male part simply went to, like, the slightly less bad guy of the two that showed up.
Thankfully, in recent years our direcihave beem much more likely to cast gender-blind and it's become a whole lot fairer and the cast much more well-rounded in consequence.
don’t forget the girl who thinks everything needs to be vibrato 😭
I literally tried out for Anastasia and this girl who literally BULLIED me in like 1-5th grade got like a big role and she like isn't good either and I DIDNT EVEN GET IN
So real for that bro 😅
1. My ex
2. The favourite girl
3. Random kid
I’d agree, but the theatre department at my school has so little participation it’s almost impossible to not have at least a speaking role.
omg thats so real and for my WHOLE school show this year the lead was given to a YEAR 8!!! not even a sixth former a year 8????? and guess what the year 8's mum works at the school😱
POV u got called back for a lead and when you check the cast list you got ensemble
*what is this*
we love the kids whos parents def made donations 😍
The theater director high-school i went to for my freshman and sophomore year played favorites and it didn't help that her daughter always auditioned too. Not to mention the choir director helped with casting and guess what? She played favorites too 🥲 (I was not a favorite and was stuck in ensemble until I moved)
This was so validating!
