  • Ryan sat down with three friends to talk about the war in Ukraine through the lens of a new edited volume on the topic. Enjoy this conversation with Andrea Kendall-Taylor (former CIA), Hal Brands, and Alexander Bick (former National Security Council staff), which surfaces some important disagreements and debates about the war and international order. Oh, and also buy War in Ukraine: Conflict, Strategy, and the Return of a Fractured World (www.amazon.com.... Please note this was recorded shortly before the U.S. Congress passed the security supplemental, which included aid for Ukraine.

Great podcast! Sadly more or less unnoticed, but maybe the algorithm gods will be kind soon!

It's our was to lose. Russia can NOT win unless we choose to not support Ukraine. It is on us in the global West to pick the world we want to live in. Choose wisely. Thanks.
Glory to Ukraine. God Bless Ukraine and her people. 🇺🇦🇺🇸

Excellent. Didn't think I could enjoy this without Kofman but taking a larger strategic look was a great choice.

I'm not a Putin expert, but I strongly suspect that Putin is motivated by the same thing as every other authoritarian: he wants to stay in power. That's why he supports autocrats abroad. These aren't strategic or imperial moves meant to improve Russia's strategic position, they're counter-revolutionary moves. Ukraine turning democratic was something Putin couldn't accept, because its cultural and linguistic ties to Russia could quickly lead to a spread of pro-democratic ideas into Russia.
Secondly, if the West is trying to compete for influence globally, we are doing a terrible job at it. What the global South wants is for us to rein in Israel, curb carbon emissions, and debt relief. This is not too high a price to pay to gain more allies, we just have to be willing to fight our own domestic constituencies.

    “This thing will eventually stalemate.”
Everyone seems to believe that the movement of the front lines is the most important factor for determining who’s winning. This is incredibly incorrect. It’s about who runs out of resources first. As long as the west doesn’t abandon Ukraine, Ukraine will never run out of resources. The US contributed less than 1% of its military budget to military aid for Ukraine, the majority of which was old outdated equipment that needs to be replaced anyway. The US can keep things up forever without noticing. Russia obviously can’t.

Are these the same prophetic geniuses that were responsible for 20 years of occupation of Afghanistan and then Taliban takeover in a few hours. I must listen intently to their wisdom and foresight, beyond that of even Solomon😂

Something they never mention when they speak about overestimation of Russia or underestimation of Ukraine, is how they overestimate the United States. America is NOT the country it used to be.
