    Let other people have cats and dogs! Jungle Bob is here to show you that owning a pet reptile or amphibian is not as complicated as you might think. In this video, he shares tips about caring for a Chinese water dragon.
    Another popular lizard in the pet trade these days is the Chinese Water Dragon. And we say that because I call him the poor man's iguana. Not that he's that much less expensive than an iguana, it's just that it makes a better pet. And it's often mistaken for an iguana because it's green, it's got that long tail, and if you're not in the know, it almost looks like one. But really, it's a lot different. It's got that beautiful mark through its back of its eye. The males have this beautiful crest on the top that will get bigger and bigger as it gets older. It just needs a fairly good size terrarium.
    Chinese Water Dragons are skittish little animals that in nature, again, will hang over a limb to escape their prey. They like to do that in a terrarium, too. You need a good size water bowl, if not a little pond inside the enclosure in order to keep them happy. They love insects and small mice as their prey.
    But their skittish nature, again in nature, they'll dive off the limb and go under the water, but in your terrarium they can't do that because it's glass there. So, oftentimes you'll see Chinese Water Dragons that are in an insufficient enclosure with a damaged nose because they literally slam into the side of the glass in their attempt to escape from you.
    Long-term captives eventually figure out that you're not going to harm them. They'll calm down like this little guy is here. He's an older one and he just gets extremely calm and becomes a nice companion animal you can take out and show off. Still, if startled, he's gone. They're very, very quick animals when they want to be and you have to be careful.
    I know many friends of mine who have these and they use a small harness or a leash to keep them under control because once they go, they're gone. They're extremely fast. But it's a way better animal to keep in captivity than their counterparts from South America or Central America, the Green Iguana. Chinese Water Dragon is gaining in popularity, that's for sure. A beautiful, beautiful animal that's a fun thing to keep.

      milldabeast519 I was thinking the same. And besides I can get fresh collards for $3 and they last my iguana almost a week so. ...

      Well ya more to feed but add in the cage something you will need to probably spend 500-1000 dollars least and if you buy one already built 1000-2000 it’s just something to factor in I’ve owned both and I would say iguanas cost more overall but Chinese water dragons make better pets

    I have bearded dragons that I think would be a better pet, if you like taking your pet out of his or her cage. Both of my bearded dragons learned to walk into my hand after a couple weeks. I just wanna add a Chinese water dragon to my reptile collection.

      it's not only in china, it because they are agamied (or how do you call them in america) and every kind of agamied is named dragon, Bearded dragon, Chinese water dragon, Australian frilled dragon.

    I'm sorry but in my honest opinion I think Chinese Water Dragons make horrible pets. I don't think they make great pets. I tried to raising my own own but they ended keep dying. They are hard to care for and they aren't good beginners like leopard geckos or bearded dragons. I lost mine but can't handled another lose anymore.
    I wished it's best we should banned keeping Chinese Water Dragons as pets.

    *TIP*
    When buying a Chinese water dragon, invest in a hatchling from either a reptile expo or a very good pet store. Try and stay away from Petsmarts and Petcos because they often have parasites from being imported here. If you get a hatchling, you can tame it at a you set age and they can learn to enjoy handling.
    *FACT*
    You have to handle your dragon often one tamed to prevent it from becoming hostile

      id use reptial carpet but I'm no expert but I had friend who had a chinese water dragon who ingested some of its coconut bedding and got sick and died...after he took it to the vet and gave it medicine...it also had damage to its nose and it was a small 10in dragon in a huge 4 ft wide octagon tank with a pool and plenty of trees to climb..I wanted to get one but his went crazy if you tried to handle it which he still did regularly and it spent all day running around the cage damaging it nose...this is just one case but it detered me from getting another lizard all together...I had a puppy dog iquana from 5 years old till 18 and I wanted to get another lizard of some kind but I'm just discouraged hearing all these horror stories of people buying from pet stores and having the animal die withing a year for some reason...I wanna know a good source to get healty reptiles or amphibians

    • @IBmorepimpin21
      @IBmorepimpin21 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not two males after they go into the juvenile phase they will fight and hurt each other! You can house a male and female in the same cage but they may bred then.... also if you do get a female she will become gravid even if she doesn't have a male in her enclosure its just that the eggs she lays won't be fertile.

    my dragon over came her ski-dish nature, i started off by dangling feeder mice and toying with them by making them dangle gaudy jewelry for her until she would eat them, then she kind of realized i go it made, then started taking her out side on a leash, and now shes really brave never hides lays around my computer with me, when she would hide i would always find her right away and get her out of hiding, she likes to hang on me while i walk around getting drunk on the street in the summer, she has an aquarium but would rather live by my computer, she has lots of gold statues and waterfalls to enjoy and i keep my apartment around 80 all year and humid, way better house pet then a rabbit

    My wife just surprise me with one of these little guys. I'm not for sure if it's a male or female yet it's kind of small it is a beautiful animal. And honestly I thought it was an iguana 2 and then she was like no this is a Chinese water dragon and I was like oh okay so you know I looked it up and I found out it was a water dragon. And now I'm just really excited I've had him for about a week. And I'm just looking online to be able to give him the best home he could have. He came from Petco and I don't agree with the way Petco treats their animals. I don't agree with the way they cage their animals. So everytime I can I will buy an animal from Petco just so I can bring it home and make sure it's taken care of even if I wind up selling it again to somebody else I will take care of it. I've had many reptiles I love them. I've had spiders well tranchulas. And of course I have a cat and two dogs I'm just an all-around animal loving person thank you for this video it's very helpful. I can't wait to get to work I'm putting him a small pond in his home.

    Just wanted to ask and see if anyone has some suggestions. I picked up a male, probably almost 2 feet with the tail, yesterday at my local pet shop. He was in bad shape so I'm trying to rehabilitate him. My concern is that his nose is pretty badly rubbed and he's even missing a small piece of his bottom lip. I keep my enclosures very clean but I still worry about infection setting in.

      I'm a new owner, so I can't say for sure, but I've read that having two of the same gender (a boy with another boy or a girl with another girl) can be a bad idea because they can get very aggressive. You may want to consider getting a second terrarium for one of them and separating them.

    • @JoeSmith-vx9dh
      @JoeSmith-vx9dh 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the female is slightly bigger than the other female the bigger one will tend to bite and bully the smaller one, this happens especially with food, try feed them in different places if so

      They need a custom enclosure to be comfortable. min size is 4-5 feet long, 3-4 ft wide, 5-6 feet tall.
