    I grew up with German food because my mother's best friend used to watch me and she only made German food. I just made this recipe but I added a bay leaf to it and it is delicious. 👍 I'm sure it'll be better cold tomorrow with some cold cuts or a braut and German potato salad.

      It would also taste delicious on top of a sandwich of liverwurst.

    Thanks for posting this recipe! I made this today actually - as listed and it's amazing! I didn't substitute anything or reduce the sugar. It really needs the sugar to balance out the acid from the vinegar. Excellent recipe!

    For the ones complaining about the amount of sugar here's a helpful and handy tip: either cut it in half or don't use it. No need to complain about it.

    the red cabbage must be cut into very fine strips, onions, red sweet apples are taken and for God's sake not so much sugar some red wine vinegar, red wine, (better red grape juice) then come bay leaf, 5-6 juniper berries, 3 tablespoons cranberries, 1 / 2 cinnamon stick, cloves then salt, pepper and lard to sauté!

  • @googo151
    @googo151 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @leapingfroglady Usually apple cidar vinegar, but you can use red wine vinegar or sherry vinegar or champagne vinegar. It's up to you.

    When I went last year to the Check Republic and asked at a restaurant for a German dish, they got very upset and told me they had nothing to do with Germany.

    Nix nay on the sugar. I just made this with 1 apple, onion and it was plenty sweet enough.

    I don´t know where the recipe comes from, but it´s not german. Most of the ingredience are missing. And never add salt and vinegar after having finished the cabbage.

    yah, bacon, caraway seed sure is missing, and so is lingdon berry marmalade (IKEA) or any kind or other preservatives - red cherry - red currant (@ thanksgiving some cranberry - tastes great - also is one clove enough?? I don't think so. 4 or 5

  • @angelahagerman5693
    @angelahagerman5693 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    on your apples it would be easier if you turn it to the softer part...then you won't have to say...it's a little tuff...

    Is not real german recept no sorry !! Im from Germany Bavarian i have a better Recept!

    • @krimmer66
      @krimmer66 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      My Omi is 98 years old and I can say with confidence that she knew Bavarian cooking, but the fact is that her living in Canada for 55+ years her ingredients changed. Whether that is due to tastes changing or simplifying of recipes.
      There is no doubt this recipe is a more westernized version, but for a westerner it's probably more to their liking due to the obsession with sugar and less spices used.

    • @angelahagerman5693
      @angelahagerman5693 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      She is not German or does she know how to make German Red Cabbage..No Lard??? and you don't put the butter in until it's almost finished..and to make it shiny you put a little bit of olive oil in at the last before serving...I love the whole cloves...I put it into my whole onion and take them out before cutting up the onion to add to the cabbage..

  • @Rollich1
