  • In this video I take on a hand-built challenge lock designed to defeat picking attempts.
    Whipped videos highlight custom made locks sent to the LockLab as a challenge. They contain innovative modifications, unique security designs, and careful craftsmanship. Challenge lock design is difficult, to say the least, but many LockSporters excel in lock design and hand craftsmanship. Because there is such innovation among LockSporters, many manufacturers pay attention to the WHIPPED videos and incorporate the security techniques into their own locks.
    There is only ONE RULE: The key must work. You are free to cover up the key to prevent me from seeing it until after I successfully pick (or fail to pick) the lock. I will make THREE 10-minute attempts (down from six 10-minute attempts in April 2018). If I fail to open it in that time, it will become a WHIPPED video. If you are interested in sending a challenge lock, please use this address:

    Assa locks are made In Herlev on the Ruko factory. I have work'd there 15 years ago.

      I would stilll guess that this is a Ruko, not an Assa. This looks like the beefy Ruko padlocks, the only difference would be that it's not painted black with coloured stripes. Doubt it's an Assa.

    As a machinist those grove doesn't look like threads to me but small circles milled into the core (look at 10:09). Why I think this is that I can't see an angle to the groves, they look perfectly square to the hole (instead of a threads spiral). While the difference might seem small a threads profile and slight angle will help with the feedback/counter rotation when a sharp edge grabs into them. Well at least theoretically :-)
    To make these groves would require a small mill (CNC or round feeding) or a special tool. Or an insane amount of fiddling with a small 4-jaw in a lathe.

    • @InItForTheParking
      @InItForTheParking 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Or a dremel and a jig.

    • @pirobot668beta
      @pirobot668beta 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I saw that too. I was thinking a small mill and a boring-bar.
      Possibly used a cut-down piece of a file as the cutter.
      Built-in grooves at a regular interval, steel hard enough to cut through indifference.

    • @WineScrounger
      @WineScrounger 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That was my thought, tapping the holes is quite easy but square edged, milled undercuts will kill feedback. Easy enough on a CNC.

    • @andersjjensen

      Those are ASSA/Ruko made groves. Here is an exploded view of that particular core with another format bibel: www.ruko.dk/da/site/rukodk/til-private/produkter/serie-600-og-500/serie-600-eksplosionstegning/

    I think the short stout spring in #3 was meant to be the driver, with the coils engaging with the threading. It's something different though. Nice pick job.

      Instead of being "threaded", it has continuous circles going down the bore, in order the catch the edges of the pins and give a false feel that the pin is at the shear line.

    • @Druid_Plow
      @Druid_Plow 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know this is quite old now but i saw that too.
      I think it might be a grub screw. Put it just far enough in so the key pin will stick out just a little bit.

  • @igorsvacic217
    @igorsvacic217 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Are there any hollow pins?
    I guess that would be hard to pick since your pick would be pressing hole?They should be really thin outer layer tho,so it would be hard to clip it.
    With a strong spring I guess that would be a nice challenge

    • @pirobot668beta
      @pirobot668beta 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      And if the ends of the hollow pins had slotted ends?
      Think crenelations, like the notches on the top of old castle turrets!
      The shear-line would work at the top-edge of the crenelations, of course.
      When being picked, the tool might contact the top of a crenelation, or land in one of the gaps between.
      This kind of unpredictable 'feel' could keep folks busy.
      And if you are not careful, the thin material could bend, disabling the lock entirely.
      Hmmm, if the gaps were just wide enough to 'capture' a pick and cause bending, where a key insertion would not, this could be a 'feature', and not a design weakness.
      The lock keeps pickers out by setting traps for picking!
      You got quite the idea there!

    • @knuckle12356
      @knuckle12356 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      igor svakurac a hole wide enough to allow passage of the pick. So we gotta start with the key pins. If they aren't hollow, driver pins are irrelevant re: hollowness. So we have hollow key pins. Then we are going to have the hollow driver pins followed by the spring. (I'm assuming you were talking about the drivers being hollow.) The shaft for the pins is so narrow, try sticking a pick up through an empty lock cylinder. It's just not happening. Then, no matter how thin the material is cut, there's still a very definite edge that would be easy to lift with a pick. Then reaching the shear line is no different than any other pick. Plus if you get a really thin wall, there's no depth available for security cuts ie serrations, spools, etc. MAYBE some light indentations more akin to cheap Chinese serrations, but they'd be minimally effective, and still constrict the inside diameter significantly.
      In short, for hollow pins, by themselves, that dog won't hunt. (My opinion only, based on what I consider logical progression of observational "analysis.")

    I have a cheap lock, with a T shaped key. I think when I was trying to pick it, maybe it broke something inside. Because when I use it one way, like that lock, it doesn't turn. When I flip it, it works. But it works with a screwdriver, just barely touching the cylinder.

    Could you perhaps make a short video once where you explain the functionality of the anti drill chambers? What makes them work?

    • @Ampera_
      @Ampera_ 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you mean the anti-drill pins, it's just a pin made of REALLY hard metal that's designed to fuck up a drill bit. He had a video where he tried to drill a lock (I think it was the motorcycle lock with the Stanley body and the tricked out core) with a load of really expensive bits, and ended up mangling a shit ton of them (Like 100 bucks worth of bits)

    • @PandaMan02
      @PandaMan02 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      the pins in there are hardened steel, if you hit them with a drill, it can cause the tip of the bit to snap or jam, depending on how its hit, definitely wrecking the drill bit.

    • @edgarvalencia3657
      @edgarvalencia3657 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Drill takes the path of least resistance.
      It will want to go around the anti-drill pin.... And axiomatically... Around the regular pins... Meaning you will NOT defeat the lock by drilling through it(pins will still be there).

  • @caseydarrah
    @caseydarrah ปีที่แล้ว

    I'd definitely call it a valid challenge lock- it just has a mechanism to force picking it in a given orientation, much like some locks' active elements.

    Such a strange pinning altho since it took you 4 atemts he clarly did somthink right i think the thicker spring was desighn to be more like a coil to get snagged kinda like a thin spool but more effective an altho strange the gravity pin was a intresting idea, just my opinion proberly wrong but thats my take on it lol

    just a wild guess but maybe a shortened hole in the bible for pin 1 so if it is upside down it will not open but if right side up the pin falls into the keyway. put in the front to stop you from just using any key

    • @pwnmeisterage
      @pwnmeisterage 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Obscuring the key bow has some security value. It makes identifying the key (and lock) manufacturer or model more difficult.
      But maybe not for a locksmith, lol, in which case the skull curses are probably more effective.

    • @edgarvalencia3657
      @edgarvalencia3657 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      What security value?
      If they have the key then security is already 100% compromised(typically).
      Maybe so they can't SEE it?

    • @pwnmeisterage
      @pwnmeisterage 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      lol true enough, if they have the key they can open the lock.
      But if they can't identify the key blank (or more likely, the non-locksmith clerk at the key-cutting place can't identify the key blank) by shape then they "can't" duplicate it. It's definitely no "real" security. But every cheap trick (even voodoo skulls!) can help "secure" the lock better vs common people.

    • @BTW...
      @BTW... 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 'skull' mask is a layer of childish wankery, not security.
      A locksmith or a non-locksmith clerk at the key-cutting place would slip in blanks until they find one that fits anyway.

    With a pin missing, for the lock to open either the bare spring must line up with the shear line or the key itself must push that sole pin all the way down until it's under the shear line, right? Guess it depends on the spring, whether or not it is nicely rounded and not too thin, whilst the cylinder may not leave too much wiggle room around it either?

      Go to lock-lab.com and browse around. Bill has a nice series on how to fabricate your own picks and tension wrenches. All you need are small hand files, sanding paper in varying grits and a wind shield wiper... and patience. If you can borrow a Dremmel style tool that will speed up the process, but it isn't stricktly needed. My guess is that you can be well on you way with $20... old locks can be traded for a family pizza and a six pack at your local lock smith.

    There's no pin or spring in chamber 1 because the key pin needs to freely fall into the chamber to prevent the key from opening the lock when it is inverted into the "locked" position at 0:57.
