Arcane isn't all trauma and death! There are quite a few scenes, usually towards the beginning of episodes, that show our favorite trauma victims making jokes, acting playful, and getting into humorous situations. How does Arcane make use of humor for storytelling purposes? How does Mel's dirty joke to Jayce facilitate her characterization? How does Jinx's bar scene with Chuck set up for the Guns for Hire scene later in that episode? Why specifically include funny scenes for serious characters like Silco and Caitlyn? Humor isn't just for making people laugh: it's a vital and versatile tool that impacts all elements of a story.
Arcane had really good pace of humor. It didnt feeled forced and I dint even realised that most characters had some humorous moment.
Frr
wtf
I know you are probably not from english speaking country and me too but pls when you use "did" and "didnt" don't add "ed" to verbs. I really dont wanna sound mean or smth, its just easier to read and understand when written correctly.
@@izzyg7015 not bussin
@@izzyg7015 I agreed.
Everyone's missing a classic scene.
Sevika: "Everyone. Out."
Chuck the Bartender: *nonchalantly and smoothly sinking behind the bar*
Ima go watch that now xd
which episode is this?
The Vi and Sevika fight scene episode 9
“my names’ not Chuck!” -Thieram
I remember that.
The "look on my face" scene always kills me. It just radiates annoyed older sister energy and I adore it. RIP Mylo, I really liked that little brat
Late reply, but same here. A lot of people hated Mylo, but I honestly really liked him. He was just an insecure kid who got one-upped in nearly every scene, even by Powder in that shooting game, who was just a little girl.
@@MLH_1231 yea i watched a video talking in more depth abt mylo and how middle child syndrome made him bully powder more and also do things to get noticed. quite tragic actualy :(
Same here. He always made me think of a Monkey-even before he was drawn like one lol
But on some level I really felt that smallness he always felt portrayed with. I felt like I related to him a lot.
@@MLH_1231not only that, but he is the middle kid, so it’s understandable
Viktor saying "wait this is not my bedroom" when him and Jayce are caught trying to sneak into Heimardinger's lab by Mel is one if the funniest scences
It's one of my favorite scenes, especially since it easily makes you wonder why Viktor would choose his bedroom as the most normal place to sneak Jayce into at night xD
@@Bwans_Art Be careful, JayVik shippers incoming lmao.
Viktor’s one of the funniest characters. back when they’re working on the crystal together and Jayce asks “Are you sure you know what you’re doing?” and Viktor just shakes his head and goes 😬
had to pause cause it was so funny and caught me off guard
Viktor is absolutely one of the funniest characters in the entire show, I think it has something to do with him being disabled. Disabled people are among the funniest people in the world idk
I was trying to remember a funny Viktor moment and how could I forget about this!! It was hilarious, like how someone so brilliant sucks so much at lying lmao Love him so much
The face scene with Vi and how she and Caitlyn sneak into her room. The look on their faces is pure comedy gold, “This is not what it looks like...”
escpecially if kaitlyns parents alr know lol
@@interrospire saw a comic from i think AG_nonsuch where caits mom has to pay the dad because they had a bet on whether she was into women lol. It's basically bight after the scene where they sneak into her room and Tobias is just like "HA! Gay! Give me my money"
I legit paused and replayed that section because I laughed so hard
The scene where Vi mimicked Sevika's taunt always cracks me up. Sis just had the shit beaten out of her but she did NOT pass on the chance to insult her enemy. Hilarious.
So true!!
I love Himerdingers little giggle after his jokes haha it's adorable.
i want to kill it with a.giant stick

"I also believe that laughter is the way you hook the audience," Feige told press. "Then you can scare them. Then you can touch them deeper than they were expecting to in a film about a tree and a raccoon and aliens that don’t understand metaphors. Humor is the secret in into the audience’s other ranges of emotions."
its like the salt of the story telling world
@@eglago3088 What a wonderful comparison. Thank you for this. 😌
@@eglago3088 I've found this to be true in personal interactions, as well. I'm a therapist, and I'm particularly skilled at quickly earning my clients' trust because I'm not afraid to be a moron. Humor is disarming. It makes people comfortable, and you need to get comfortable in order to discuss things that make you uncomfortable. So I basically spend a third of my time bullshitting around with my clients until they feel ready to engage with something more serious. You can see it if you're paying attention - and it provides a very organic transition point that makes the whole interaction feel natural. And that's something that's very important to me.
I'm glad to see that this principle plays out in media, too. Apparently, this is just the way people are.
Strong Inside by Bo Burnham vibes
Wait a minute this isn’t my bedroom!
A classic
Viktor is a living meme
The implication that he was trying to sneak a boy into what he thought to be his bedroom like. Why. Why was that his first thought
@@Killjoyous__ Viktor a lil fruity
@@Killjoyous__ Better that than breaking into the evidence locker
I even forgot about the fact that this series had funny moments after it broke and devastated my heart.
There's also the time when in Ekko hideout, Caitlyn thinks Vi is being hurt and Vi appears with Ekko saying "my hero" while looking at Caitlyn with a smile, this scene is so funny.
My favorite: "I almost drowned in these waters."
"You TOLD me a MILLION times."
When you have a monologuing villain for a dad. 😂
"Blah blah blah"
"Did I miss anything??"
Also there's "I'm not THAT crazy" joke right before the finale, that releases tension before jumping right back up at the end
That one is super funny, I love when she throws the top to the plate while silco and vi are tied up
I was genuinely scared for my favorite ship
That was one of my all time favorite scenes both from the tension and the humor
I was sooo hoping to not see the decapitated head of Caitlyn.
Arcane’s balance of all aspects of writing (tragedy, comedy, romance, etc.) is honestly what makes it such an easy and beautiful show
Viktor’s “this isn’t my bedroom” moment had me dying it felt so unexpected but on brand for him???
I think Silco and Jinx’s scenes are as rife with humor as they are with tragedy. So much of it is just “Dad trying to cope w teenaged daughter’s antics” and I love it, especially the scene where he’s yelling at her and her music is too loud to hear him, or where she’s rambling and trying to distract from her problems with Vi and he has the most exhausted expression. I don’t think a sitcom would be appropriate, but I could see a somewhat humorous series about him trying to raise the girl he just randomly picked up off the street, especially considering that he knows absolutely nothing about children or parenting. I saw someone joke once that the reason Silco lets Jinx get away with so much is because he doesn’t know what normal teenaged girl behavior is and doesn’t wanna be seen as a helicopter parent 😂
I'm sure there's some fanfics on Ao3 about this, if you're interested in a good read?
"Are you sure this is safe"
"Of course not"
Underrated line
Yes, I love this too :D
Hey shnee, I realized something interesting about the last drop over the course of the series. At the start of the series we are shown 2 areas of the last drop, the ground floor and the basement where the kids lived. However, after the time skip, we see the ground floor and the upstairs office. We never see the office pre-time skip, and we never see the basement post-time skip. I can understand why jinx would never go to the basement post time skip (to many memories), so that on its own isn't strange, but the fact that we ONLY see the office after the time skip is interesting. It suggests many things, one of which is the difference in leadership style between vander and silco, vander the man of the people, and silco, the dictator in the tower. Vanders focus down in the undercity vs silco's obsession with matching piltover. What do you think?
That’s a really interesting observation! I think you’re into something, and it does make sense considering their characters.
You're right! Especially for Vander. He is always trying to keep things tame, at one point Vi asks him "when did you get so comfortable living in someone's shadow" and Vander tells her that if she wants to keep her family safe then she ultimately has to "lay low."
This is funny to me actually, because my first time watching through I didnt realize these three locations were in the same building. Theres a lot that I missed during my first watch honestly. Good thing I watched it another 5 times afterward! (wait, what?)
You know what’s funny? I was sort of wondering the same thing, but it’s nice to here that someone else was thinking it.
honestly that makes sense
Arcane's humour is one thing that you wouldn't normally notice, but you will feel it if it is missing.
Facts facts
Yes that’s because the characters joke between themselves
Another favorite humorist part of Arcane for me was when Vi and Jayce meet up in his workshop and she picks up the gauntlets and says something along the lines of: "Are these made so when you raise your hand, everyone can notice you in the boardroom".
Viktor sneaking Jayce into the lab at night when Mel caught them was also a fave
Vi: fuck the council
Jayce: already have
Mel jumpscare
@@greenboomcarter56hmmm yes, sextech
I also like those scenes because they allow they animators to have a lot of fun with the facial expressions of the characters. The first scene with Vi is probably my favorite for that.
I vibe with Mels' humor.
honestly same
Welp, wasn't she disowned as a teenager?
Would make sense she still kinda young inside
@@ELbabotas1 I think it's the opposite. She would've had to mature faster
One of my favorites: “but that’s a children’s toy…”
Mel not even a minute later: “this is only for the SHARPEST OF MINDS”
@@brittsNAY yeees these lines killed me, this is amazing to display her cunning and snark.
One of my favorites is powder saying “yeah no shit” after vi tells her to hide the crystals
I think my favourite moment of humor is when Vi is talking to Jayce in his forge. When she puts on one of the hextech gauntlets and asks, "this so people notice you when you raise your hand in the boardroom?"
The scene where Vi and Cait sneak into the Kiramman house will never not be funny.
I like Viktor's dry humor
"They're almost through! No pressure!"
Was waiting for that jayce and viktor scene breaking in the lab lol. Viktor was hilarious.
This isn’t my bedroom? That was hilarious and kinda sus lmao Just love how someone as brilliant as Viktor could make such a lame lie, gotta love him
Did you just groan at Heimerdinger's relatable and quippy remark? I can't believe you could feel anything less than absoloute bliss and ecstasy when you here his voice, how dare you.
Compare the face powder makes at 0:40 with Vi's face at 0:06. She learned from her big sister how to shut Mylo up.
I loved that scene of Silco so much
"Oops! Sorry! Accident happen..."
I think a sitcom about Silco raising Powder would be hilarious lol
The scene with Silco playing with Ren in her room and Marcus walks in is one of THE MOST subtly threatening scenes I have ever seen it's so terrifying
This edit also a great example of microexpressions and why the characters look and feel so human. The physical behavior emodies the feelings of these moments so well, even better than many actors can show.
I feel like Arcane is one of the few stories that is able to balance humour and complete seriousness really well. No unnecessary witty humour messing with the pacing and it doesn’t feel extremely depressing either.
The best part about Caitlyn's line is missed by most people because it didn't get caught by the subtitles. She says, "Named after my great grandmother... Matilda... *_the, uhhhh, pirate!"_*
I just realized how much I love facial expressions in Arcane, they are so accourate and detailed
Arcane is so great because the characters don't just feel like characters, but like people. They act so natural that they could easily be real.
I really give props to the screenwriters behind Arcane. None of the jokes feel forced or out of context. They were all very smart, witty and unique for each character which displays who they are.
My favorite humor is when Mel's mom said, " I'm off to sample the local cuisine..." as she touched boy's face. My jaw literally dropped.. You know damn well who will be the reciever.
Can I just point out how consistently realistic the characters look physically?
Best show because it never feels like it's trying to be a comedy, it feels like an actual line someone would say irl.
The fact that characters have natural humor sometimes by just being themselves is amazing
Chuck should have a sitcom. I have a feeling Jinx taunting him is routine
Imagine there's a whole ass backstory as to why he calls him chuck
This is just natural. The animation really helps as well. A lot of times in shows there's an emphasis on exaggerated movement. It's animation after all have fun with it.
But Arcane's human movement is very natural. Spitting out extra spit, stumbling around during a fight, Vi finger waving at her face, Powder's breakdown alone, it's messy, and hard to watch. Silco putting his hand to his temple during the attempted coup, it's things like that the smaller details that make a fictional animated character feel real.
I really love how subtle the humor in Arcane is, and this is coming from someone who can be more than a little bit of a clown. I almost didn't even notice it really when I was watching, maybe because it feels less like it's supposed to have an impact on us (make the audience laugh) than it is supposed to be mischief towards the other characters. I never full on belly-laughed at anything, though I thought the look on Caitlyn and Vi's faces when Caitlyn's mom burst in was absolutely priceless and Mel's "don't lose your nuts" joke was unexpected and got a loud snort out of me.
The voice acting for Vi is spectacular. The animation is steller, but I don't think it would have been as funny without Vi's voice being the embodiment of the nice, serious sister that always threatens to beat you up.
I tried using the same "humor then terror" in a play during highschool and I had it planned out carefully, all the other cast was on board with this idea but the crew hated it so the teacher didn't let us use it anyways.
I was upset and the okay was much more bland without it
I vibed with Vi's humor a lot, and I find that interesting because despite never laughing at Jinx jokes, she still became my favorite character-- it wasn't funny but it felt endearing
and I think that means a lot more when it comes to writing
Episode 1-3 is some of the greatest storytelling in recent history
What a perfect arc
Caitlyn's parents...I don't know why, I just wanna see what antics and drama they get into. Maybe Mrs. Kiramman and council tingz, or Mr. Kiramman and high society idk.
I think Mr kiraman has Dad type humor
Caitlyn: dad I'm gay
Mr kiraman: hi gay I'm dad
I love that bit with Vi gesturing to her face. 😂
There was a piece of writing advice going around that said 'Your audience's eyes adjust to the dark. If there's never any light, the dark parts won't affect them at all.' and I use it a lot. If anyone knows the source, please comment it :)
For the question of which character should get a sitcom, dear gods I would love for Silco/Jinx/Sevika to get some slice-of-life/sitcom-esque content. Crime boss dad + loose canon daughter + right hand who's tired of both of their shit 🤌
And also Singed who would accidentally kill and torture people
DEEZ NUTS
HA
GOT EM!
Nah but for real Vi's the funniest in the show so far imo
I personally think, she's only second to pre-time skip Viktor.
The use of facial expressions in arcane will forever mark my mind as being one of the best use of showing emotion through characterisation
They're small moments with exaggerated expressions, but they feel just so, SO real, like powder's crying scene and how vi holds her face...
The humor also fit, or even expressed the character's personality. From the humor displayed with each character alone, we can see what kind of person they are and what humor they like.
It sets up later scenes AND is organic and fits with the characters. Most realistic animated characters ever made.
the reason Arcane humour works so well is because it goes well with that character.
RIOT knows what they're doing which makes the series much more enjoyable because it is at the same time very relatable... The humor were in par with the atmosphere of the scene which make it feel natural...
Why is NO ONE talking about the scene where Mylo and Claggor reunite some junk and go "yeah, we're ready for war."
dibs on the bat
I just thought of something sad that I never considered. Jinx knows what Mylo and Claggor looked like dead… she went back for their bodies to bury them.
She saw the results of her mistake in vivid detail.
With Vander and Vi gone, no one else would’ve done it, and Silco would’ve gone back to salvage what he could and Powder definitely went along to see that they were properly buried.
She knew Mylo was impaled and Claggor was crushed. Poor kid saw way too much death and suffering at a young age.
I never put that together until now, seeing that Mylo has the hole in his chest from the pole that impaled him in her imagination. Her everlasting view of him is of the scared boy dying at her hands, crying and screaming in pain because he was just a kid. That’s what she sees in her mind. Even her good memories are tainted by death and heartbreak… it’s hard to focus on the good when you know how it ends.
“Are you sure this is safe?”
“Of course not.”
*proceeds
Now you made me want to watch this brilliant show again
“Are you sure this is safe?”
Viktor-“Of course not” 🤣. Viktors humour always hits hard
"Or they're just being themselves"
*Proceeds to show a picture of kid echo*
Vi's line is one of my favourites. It shows how serious she is when it comes to Powder, how resolute she is and it's an amazing example of Fortiche's excellent work
What stands out about Arcane's humor is that it never feels forced or intended. The bulk of them are just awkward and/or relatable moments that fit both the character and the situation.
i love how this guy can find so much dept just from a joke made from an arcane character
Viktors “this isn’t my bedroom” is still the funniest joke in the show
They did gods work on the facial animations. You can feel the emotion, stress, frustration, and most of all sarcasms in everything they say. I’d be absolutely amazed and impressed if they did this without motion capture to use as a base. They nailed this shit
One of the best shows I've ever watched! The charackters are just so hilarious
this is why i find comical relief to be very important when it's done right. i LOVE it when it serves more than just a joke.
If I had my own series I feel the only way it could shine how I want is with this type of animation, like anime but with this much detail in the shading, details, etc.
My art style is all about detail in the rendering. I wish more series were like this one or older anime.
Thank you, this explains why jojo's bizarre adventure's humor is so good, the intentional jokes are few and far between but they fit so well
i swear this show is aboslutly amazing. i can spend hours talking about this single show
Caitlyn’s mother kicking in with a gun will always make me crack 😂
And dad hugging her...
I just like that child look like actual child in this serie.
“Try not to loose your iykyk.”
💀💀😂😂😂
I always loved that scene because it just seemed super real. Like she makes the face twice, and afterward her Expression says "what fucking part of this are you not understanding"
Your videos and Shorts make me relive the feelings I felt when I first watched Arcane. But now I know why it was so rivieting and enthralling. I also never noticed that line from Caitlyn. Idk how I missed that though.
Arcane made me cry and ugly laugh at the same time thats what makws it so bootiful
been patiently waiting for season 2 🙏🏽
I love that Powder and Vi give Mylo the same "The fuck?" Look, Powder after killing it at shooting, and Vi after he keeps trying to talk when she makes the face 😂
Jinx gets her own sitcom where it's just her talking to no one (as in with schizophrenia
I love how her mom just has a gun and there just like 👩🏼🤝👩🏻
It makes you think these are actual personalities not just puppets, so you get to connect to them for the person they are. And then you hurt with them
"Try not to lose your nuts" caught me so off guard both times I watched it and I still find it so funny because it's so unexpected, and the realisation that the start of the scene was purely setup for this joke
this is exactly how you do humor in a serious show like this, absolutely perfect
When mel made that joke i said, out loud, ‘wait was that a deez nuts joke’
I love Arcane, the humor really works.
The face by vi is one of my favorites 😂
"Mah parents named me Matilduhh..." I love how the awkwardness changed her accent while at the same time disguising herself.
my favorite will always when vi thought that jinx killed caitlyn and served her on a platter, and how jinx said that "sheesh i'm not that crazy" lol that made me cracked up
I love vi at the beginning, the older sister vibes when you know you screwed up but she still has patience with you
I feel like Powder is to blame for her family's death. She didn't listen when told to stay out of a fight. She didn't think through what a big explosion would do if it happened near them. (She saw how powerful the hex orbs were first hand). Then, she didn't mention that she had them to anyone of her family. I feel like the big brother was wasted, he could have been the one she goes to when she doesn't want to talk to VI
I love that it looks like powder is giving Mylo the "shut up" face.
Every time heimerdinger is on screen at all I just go 'LOOK, IT'S THE GUY!'
viktor also has really good funny moments
"wait, this isnt my bedroom!!!"
i absolutely loved the moment where mylo basically is told "skill issie" with absolutely no words involved
Heimerdinger sitcom, where it's just a bunch of Heimerdingers making bad jokes while every episode has an opening from different sitcoms but with only Heimerdinger.
Dingersaurs, Heimer Matters, Perfect Dingers, Dinger Bunch, Full Dingers. Masterworks all, you can't go wrong
I love this scene because for some reason, Vi is drawn so like... Familiar-ly? I know someone who looks exactly like that so it's a just a nice scene that is painted and framed beautifully.
I think the your looking for is :human
Thats why arcane is do great its really human in its dramatisation, very European cinema like
I suppose that works. @@top-notch8277
That scene of kid Ekko showing the moves Vi taught him was my favorite scene in the whole show lol
