In the height of the'50s TV Western craze, Universal Studios had a place on backlot called "Five Corners", where numerous western streets were located an converged and also allowing multiple westerns to be filmed simultaneously without interefering with each other.

Very interesting video. It reminds me of the making of fron the film Bone Tomahawk. It starts in a small town and then has the characters travel for days, through a landscape that becomes gradually more wasteland-like. But actually the movie was mostly shot at a farm near LA and the surrounding area.
    Also, my condolences regarding Sourmash.

Movie makers do lots of camera positions/angle tricks to maximize the sets they are paying for. Even though you don't produce films but instead a weekly episode, with few exceptions most every live-action intro & outro is shot in a different position or perspective utilizing many of the same backgrounds or locations. I'm sure you'll miss Sourmash. RIP

Angles are funny, they can make a place look larger but can also be hilariously bad if you know what’s going on
The raunchy comedy Ted’s climactic chase scene was shot a block away from where I live. this scene was shot on several street on the side of a hill that from each angle looked vastly different: urban, industrial, suburban, and the fourth was base of a huge bridge. they made a five to ten minute chase scene meant to be going from the villain’s home to Fenway Park with them speeding around corners and down streets but never left the hill. i laughed hard at knowing the buildings by sight and knowing that they passed behind and around them multiple times 🤣

I have lived near Austin, Texas for many years. During that time, several movies have been filmed around here. The first I have information on is "A Perfect World" with Clint Eastwood and Keven Costner. Parts of the movie were filmed in Maxwell, Texas. For this, they build a fake building downtown that was just a brick looking tar material on poles. They also put "Concrete" steps out front. This was just a wood frame with a tiny layer of concrete over it. I got to look at the 1950s cars they used after the movie was complete. The ones used in close ups looked very well restored. The others had a crude paint job over bugs and all. The next movie was "The Newton Boys", filmed in Lockhart, Texas which has a downtown square where most of the buildings are from the late 1800s or early 1900. What I remember about that one is that my wife met a couple of the extras in a restaurant. They were filming some of the winter scenes(with fake snow) in August. The poor actors had to suffer in the August Texas heat with long coats on, etc. The last is the new version of "True Grit" with Jeff Bridges. The courtroom scene is actually filmed an old courthouse in Blanco County. Blanco county has two courthouses, one not in use now, due to goings on in the late 1800s. I also went to the town, Granger, Texas, that was supposed to be Little Rock, ARK. There were still lots of the signs used for the movie still up. I personally like Jeff Bridges version of "True Grit" better than John Wayne's version. The reason is the setting chosen. I am originally from Oklahoma where the movie is set. The scenery in the Jeff Bridges version looks kind of like places in Oklahoma. John Wayne's version was filmed in the mountains of Colorado, which looks nothing like Oklahoma.

Paramount ranch in Agoura CA was a great location to visit. Same tricks. Dr. Quinn was one show that filmed there but it went back to the 1930's. It burned down a couple of years ago in one of the big, wind driven fires. I loved seeing that fake mountain on Paramount's western street. Seemed to be on most episodes of "Bonanza". Keep up the good work.

Part of the movie Hulk was filmed up in the mountains near where I used to work. The pond was real; they built the cabin off site and trucked it up there (and back down). And that big redwood stump beside the cabin? It was fiberglass and weighed only a couple hundred pounds. The ferocious dogs were all CGI (I hope).

It occurs to me that whoever designs a town set like Mescal (or Old Tucson or any other such location/set) has to be not just a set designer, but an actual architect as well. One-time sets for plays and films might well be built to different standards than structures intended to be more permanent. It might be interesting if you could find one (or more) of these architect/set designers to talk to.

What? Giving away secrets? Very unscoundrel of you!!
I was amazed to find out that the interior of the Gem Saloon in Deadwood (TV series and movie) was built on a sound stage on Melody Ranch. There is a facade for the exterior, but the interior inside a building behind the 'town'. The use a 'translight' and background extras (and background horses) to make it look like you can see from the inside to the outside. Translights are cool. If you light them from in front, it looks like day time. If you light them from behind, they look like night. It sold the illusion perfectly. The Bella Union Saloon was a 'practical location', meaning the interior part of the actual set. The Bella Union and the Mariposa Saloon in Westworld are the same place. Good episode!

Do you think the guy at the end has forgotten his line.
It's sad to hear about the passing of Sourmash. I guess he's gone on the last roundup.

Great video, I still have a dream of building an old west town or a Cavalry outpost.
Sorry to hear about Sour Mash, my condolences to his friends and family who held him close to their hearts.

That is interesting, movie makers are sneaky. I did not know about tombstone. I wonder why they filmed there rather than the actual tombstone? RIP Bob you had it all here on earth but now you have everything in heaven.

Now I could "unretire" to get on as an extra in a movie. Make a little and have fun seeing a move getting produced at the same time.
