It took 25 years for this to come close to happening again with Shannon Szabados (also Canadian) signing with the Edmonton Oilers franchise. Szabados never saw NHL action, and her stats have been crap in the minors, but it still happened.
I saw here play with the Knights in Atlanta and I remember I think it was game against Salt Lake and their players tried to intimate her by crashing the nets a few times which lead to a few scrums that night , our defensemen stood up for her and I was impressed of how tough she was for her size , she showed she could play with with the big boys . On another note , who would have thunked that years later another Rheume ( her brother Pascal ) would end up playing with the Atlanta Thrashers !

Few professional NHL goalies actually play by age 20, as they spend years conditioning in the minors (AHL) beforehand. If they struggle going from that league up to the NHL, image what she faced having not even faced the level of the AHL yet.
This is a wonderful story and good on her for being part of the “show”. People need to realize that the best women’s hockey is around the same level as Bantam or low level Midget hockey(14-16 year old boys). It’s mostly a size/speed/strength thing. Good on her though. The problem with women who aren't goalies joining the NHL is players like Marchand, Kadri, Wilson, Cooke, and all the other players that pull dirty hits. And in the last all star game their numbers were lower then all the men's numbers (4 fastest skaters were like 2 seconds or more than the fastest woman. And as fun as women's hockey is to watch, it's a lot slower than college hockey and feels beer league at times with passes. And I say this as someone who 6'6" and plays in a co-sex beer league and worry I don't run over one of the women.

If a person can prove they have the skill and can show to handle the physicality of hockey, then it should matter not the gender of the person.

Just stop and appreciate women's hockey development instead of being a crybaby. You have to realize that her debut was just for show as a marketing scheme when the Lightning was starting up their franchise.

It was an NHL PR stunt. The truth is she wasn't strong enough with enough stamina to play in the NHL. That's why you won't ever see a forward or defensemen female in the NHL.....she was womens' best chance at the Pro level of Men's hockey...and she was lacking. Still a great goaltender for women and better than 98% of men at the position....just not the 1% that makes it to the NHL.
