  • Delivered a day early, so I did a quick review. A solid set from Funimation.
    Release date: December 31st, 2012.
    MSRP: $44.99. (Amazon: $24.99)
    Video: 1080P 16x9 Native HD
    Audio: Dolby TrueHD English Language with Japanese Music 5.1
    Dolby TrueHD U.S. English Broadcast Version 2.0
    Japanese (Mono)
    Subtitles: English (Full) and English (signs)
    Extras: Upcoming Special Feature Sneak Peak (One Piece: Strong World), Textless Opening and Endings, U.S. Trailer, other trailers.
    Featuring episodes 1-39, Funimation embarked on frame-by-frame restoration to remove any blemishes, tape marks, and foreign bodies that may have tarnished the video. Additionally, all three included audio tracks have been re-mastered for noise reduction, and to improve sound quality.
    A shot by show reframing was done to produce a widescreen version, similar to the DBZ Orange Box sets they were released a number of years ago.
    All of this adds up to a very solid boxset, with a rating of 8 out of 10. The only negative being that it is not the original full-frame video. Very purchase worthy.
    This video contains content owned by Funimation, used within for the purposes of review and opinion. I claim no ownership over Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, or Dragon Ball GT. These are all owned by their rightful owners, Funimation, Toei Animation, Fuji TV and Akira Toriyama. Please support official releases.

      Mr. Chocobo, Does it have all the dubs on disc? Or just the English Funimation and Japanese dub?

    • @majindustin
      @majindustin  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just the Funimation and japanese dubs are present.
      Also, the above poster is incorrect. Remastering and color correcting is normally handled by Toei in Japan. Funimation usually doesn't have much to do with that.
      In my opinion, the best releases are the Dragon Box's. They're hard to find and expensive, however.

    Yes! Has the original opening! Was disappointed when they didn't have it for the orange brick season 1 set. We were supposed to watch nimbus flying though instead of nappa and vegeta walking through the volcano. Wish they could so the same for dragon ball. They have the same opening/ending in all their blue brick sets!

  • @Barricade2091
    @Barricade2091 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The reason it doesn't have the "Rock The Dragon" theme is because that opening is for the "Ocean Dub" that dub had different actors entirely and it's separate from the Funimation dub that we all know and love.

    Are the blu-rays done in the same music score and voices as it was done on the original version that appeared on Cartoon Network? Because I have been watching the digitally remastered version and it is not what originally came on Cartoon Network. The voices sound similar but the music score is completely different.

    I know this video isn't about this but have any of you seen the Dragon Ball movies? I just recently finished the whole Dragon Ball and Z series and I noticed there were a lot of movies to go along with it. Are they all worth watching?? I was only expecting like 1 or 2 movies most.

    • @majindustin

      Some of the movies are worth it, and some aren't. However, I'd recommend watching each and figuring out which ones work best for you.

    Season one was split into two parts in a 2011 blu ray release, levels 1.1 and 1.2 and featured the originally aired 4:3 footage, however according to funimation website they ran into technology problems restoring the footage like that, so they abandoned the project and released this set instead in 16:9... not sure how it's easier to edit the footage that way than clean up the original but ok... I bought the Rock the Dragon collection from Amazon on black Fri so I at least have those episodes in their original (ish) glory... personally I feel like especially releasing on blu ray, there should be more than enough space on the discs to include both ratios! Let the fans pick their favorite way to watch! Include maybe one bonus disk with some interviews and whatnot but personally I buy dragonball to reconnect with an amazing anime, nothing else I don't need the interviews and bonus stuff... just my opinion tho. Thanks for the review diabetic chocobo seeing the footage helped immensely I'm not quite as against this set now... Also us diabetics gotta stick together lol

    • @majindustin
      @majindustin  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. Given the space limitations Bluray as a medium has, there should be no problem making a set that has both formats on it, as well as all avaliable language tracks Funimation has.
      I kind of feel like they might be milking the releases until that point, but I got tired of not owning DBZ anymore, lol.
      Type 2 DB represent, yo.

    • @majindustin
      @majindustin  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The packaging lists the region as A and B compatible, so if you were to import the set it would work.
      I'm honestly a bit surprised they're not region free, as I know in the UK most bd's released are region free now (You guys are always ahead of the game, lol). I actually recently imported the Rurouni Kenshin movie from you folks, because it still hasn't been released through official studios here.

    Agree with you this looks great and the widescreen is nothing compared to the orange bricks. And I own all sets for the sake hearing the American soundtrack. This set is far greater and good. That Chris reviewer guy is just like others. They complain about every little thing. If they wanted the 4.3 bluray they should have supported them. I for one will get these and hope they finish the set.

      @majindustin  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      In fairness to him, he is giving his opinion on it, as I did in this video, and if he doesn't like it then he doesn't like it. The difference is even if I don't like something I am just going my opinion on it. Telling people to not support something to shun people that do is going a bit overboard, in my humble opinion.

      Oh ew...honestly idk why they can't just make one disc set with all the options you could ever want. No cropping? Sure use this option. No cropping and American audio? Okay fine just do this. Honestly, its not that hard?? Like sure you'd likely have more discs per number of episodes because data might take up more space but its the only way to please everybody.

    • @majindustin
      @majindustin  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Scarlette Ashton Not possible with how technology works. Yes, its a matter of space, but its also a matter of how DVD's and Blurays are set up, file structure wise.
      In regards to the Mono audio, Mono is the only type of audio that exists for the Japanese language track. You have to remember the age of this show. Japan didn't start using stereo until near the end of the shows run, but by that point it was moot.
      To get Japanese stereo, you need to buy Dragon Ball Kai. The japanese audio was re-recorded for that broadcast, hence why it is in stereo. The original broadcast will only ever exist in Mono.

    • @scarletteashton600
      @scarletteashton600 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I realize those are the issues regarding it. Just sort of wishful thinking. If DBZ had come out later we could have gotten a lot better tech in combination but it came out when technology was evolving rapidly and it got stuck in a bad spot. Hopefully the future of DBZ will be able to adapt better in the future.

    A few things worth mentioning: the film grain was taken out and in doing so they also erased some of the detail in the drawings. The colors are over saturated, it's too dark. It's essentially a clearer version of the orange bricks. It's not a very good set.

    • @majindustin
      @majindustin  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would still be your opinion, though, just like this video is mine. Do you own the set or is my video the only footage you've seen?

      I own it. Needless to say, I was disappointed. Also, only the last sentence is my opinion. The rest is cold hard fact. Some of the detail has been erased and the colors are very dark.

    • @majindustin
      @majindustin  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Crowded House No, that is also your opinion. It is, however, based on the technology you chose to watch the bluray on. As I mentioned in another commnet, my TV is a mid-range LED with excellent picture quality. The video is not too dark or too light for me to see.
      Of course, you can still chose to argue your opinion as fact, but thats just silly, isn't it?

    In amazon sales it shows pictures of the Orange Box vs the Blu Ray, and there is very clearly more frame present in the Blu Ray version. So if they still have some of it cut off they must have minimized it. But perhaps they just stretched it.

    Just bought this recently and I haven't actually watched any of it yet because I don't know if I want to return it now lol... I want to get the best version of DBZ I can get, so would the blu ray be the best? I know there are different versions of DBZ like kai, orange brick set, dragon box.

    • @majindustin
      @majindustin  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry for the late reply. Thats all up to each person, really. From my perspective, the Dragon Box's are probably the best release, but they lack the Rock the Dragon opening, which is a bit saddening.
      Perhaps Funimation will give us an ultimate release at some point, I hope, lol.

    • @EchoAxios
      @EchoAxios 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Your right it depends on the person! I noticed that the dragon box's are a lot more expensive than the others but it stays "true" to the original show if you know what I mean, but it doesn't have the opening like you said /= And Bruce Faulconer's music.

  • @Scsigs
    @Scsigs 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Aficionados Chris said because of the cropping & the DNR done to it, the series doesn't look good in this format. It DOES look good, but I'm trying to think of how the rest of the episodes look in this format, in their entirety.

    • @majindustin
      @majindustin  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I watched his video. What boggles my mind is that he likes the Level sets but not this one. They have the same video source, the only thing additionally done to this set is that it was cropped.
      Granted, I personally feel that wasn't a good thing, as I like to watch things how they aired, it doesn't look completely horrible, as he was saying. He never replied to my comment on the video in regards to this, and possibly won't. I'm also wondering if maybe he watched it on a less than stellar tv?

    • @Scsigs
      @Scsigs 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think he mentioned watching the Mary Poppins Blu-Ray he's recently gotten on an LCD monitor, so maybe that's it.

    • @majindustin
      @majindustin  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Scsigs Yeah, that could very well be it. I had an LCD until I upgraded to an LED last year, and there is a world of difference in quality. I watch a ton of anime and play a ton of video games, so for an optimal experience I did some research and decided to get the Samsung UN46ES6500F. Its a very solid tv, with deep blacks and very good color spaces.
      You need a quality TV if you're going to complain about quality. I saw nothing wrong with this BD set, and its quite honestly the best I have ever seen this series look, his TV might be ruining that for him.

    • @Scsigs
      @Scsigs 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, tell HIM that. I'd check to see if that's what he said, about his viewing experience in his Mary Poppins review, though. While I'm sure that's what he said, I'm not 100%

      @majindustin  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Scsigs Honestly, I just don't care enough to do so. This is my review of it, and its my opinion on it. I watched his opinion, and while I agreed on a few points, I mostly disagreed with it.
      Plus, it seems like he may not be reading comments or responding to them right now. I posted mine almost a day ago, and nothing back yet,

    • @majindustin

      Why are you angry at Funimation then? They are not the ones responsible for the spanish dub. They liscensed it along time ago and produced a set of spanish specifics DBZ dvds, but stopped doing so because nobody was buying them.
      All of Funimations stuff is produced in Mexico, not just the DBZ stuff. Everything I have bought from them in the past few years has had a "Disc Made in Mexico" sticker on it, but thats no reason to assume it'd be dubbed in Spanish. Your anger is misplaced.

    • @majindustin
      @majindustin  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dante Barcenas You certainly insinuated it. Who else would you be angry with? There are only a few subjects of this video. Myself and how my opinion pertains to Funimation. Either you're angry at me for something beyond my control, or you're angry at Funimation for something beyond their control.
      The only other option is that you've chosen to come onto my video and express your anger, randomly, which has nothing to do with either myself, my video, or Funimation.
      In which case, please take your misplaced anger elsewhere. This is a discussion of the subject at hand, which has nothing to do with the spanish dub of DBZ, as Funimation has no control over that. Have a nice day.

      @zeloswilder6217 ปีที่แล้ว

      @DeeCee sorry I wasn't trying to be rude I just personally don't like to watch anime with Japanese voice acting because I'm dyslexic so for me to watch an anime to completion will take me 3 to 4 times longer since we I'd have to be pausing everytime the next sentence pops up on screen weather it's the authentic version or not I really don't mind it because it's literally the only way I can consume anime for me
      Also this isn't to say that I think japanese voice acting sucks compared to English everyone has they're preferences and arguments maybe I have said in the past out of anger that I hate japanese voice acting sucks only because I've usually been mocked for enjoying the English dub of anime despite how bad the dub can be at times

    You can buy adhesive release or you can hold a hairdryer to the sticker to get it to come off without pulling up cardboard or leaving residue... or just be real careful peeling it off haha. Also I see people bitch and moan nonstop about the widescreen ratio, how bad is the cropping, honestly? Do you lose that significant of an amount of imagery?

    • @majindustin
      @majindustin  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      For me, its more of wanting to see it as I originally saw it. The cropping is something I can deal with, but mostly because I am also collecting the Dragon Box version, as well. Quality wise, the picture on blurays is fantastic.

    • @XXXemoguitarheroXXX
      @XXXemoguitarheroXXX 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      So the cropping isn't significant enough to ruin the image? I've never owned the dragon boxes and they get pricey.

    • @majindustin
      @majindustin  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Johnny Athey Well, a ruined image is more of a subjective thing. You'd have to take into consideration a ton of variables, such as playback device quality, etc etc. The cropping bothers me, if thats what you mean. Its not enough for me not to watch it, and enjoy it, however.
      For me its probably nostalgia factor, but I enjoy seeing thing as they were intended. Given how much I have watched Dragon Ball, though, I can overlook it and still enjoy it.

    I think the perfect DBZ sets would be 4.3 aspect ratio with 1080p resolution and option of all three scores (Japanese, Bruce Faulconer and alternative U.S OST).
    That would he a perfect box set. Oh wait they were doing that with the levels set. lol
    As a fan who watched DBZ back in the day with the Bruce Faulconer score and 4.3 aspect it saddens me that you can't have both. You want the aspect? Go Dragon Box but no Bruce Faulconer score. Want the score? By the Blu Ray sets but no 4.3 aspect. Luckily though the Blu Ray set box was able to recover more picture from the Orange Brick sets which is complete garbage.

      The orange bricks aren't super horrible, but by comparison this is higher quality. The one thing those things had that I feel most releases should have is the Marathon Mode option, which this BD set does have. Most Otaku do like to Marathon, and I am no different. :D

    • @scooterbros
      @scooterbros 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** no problem, this is the best review ive found on the new sets, you actually have footage of the show and in HD not just a packaging review, i think ill buy this one now since the levels were cancelled, and yes marathon makes it one massive story :)

      @majindustin  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Son Goku To be honest, I don't have the Level sets, but I wasn't sure if I should get them since they were canceled. Ideally, they'd continue them, but folks these days apparently don't want that.
      I don't want to be a grumpy hold out, and this set is pretty solid. I saw another reviewer recommend the Level sets, but not this one due to video, which surprised me because I believe they have the same initial source video (meaning they're the same video, just one is fullscreen, one is widescreen).
      I'm not sure if the video did it justice, but I hope it did. I also hope that video doesn't get taken down, but I am sure Funimation are cool guys. :D
