- Hey guys!
So you're thinking about studying English Lit at university? In today's video, myself and Ella are going through everything we wished we'd known before starting our English Literature degrees! We've now reached the end of our first year studying English and thought we'd share the things we've experienced! This ranges from the topics and books we looked at on our course, to how you're assessed and also how to make friends with the people on your course!

Got my results back today and I’m so excited to be off to study English lit at my first choice! Thank you so much for helping me to prepare for it xx
Elizabeth Rose CONGRATULATIONS! That’s amazing! I’m so glad I could help in some way! I hope you have a fab time at uni! xxx
Can you do more of these videos? They're really helpful tbh
Yeah sure! What kind of thing would you like me to talk about in future videos? ☺️
@@KatieMay7 I'm a high school senior next year and I want to major in english lit in college. But recently I've come across people who say that this major sucks and that they hated it and that they lost their love for reading because of it.
I'd like to know what the tests are usually about and what kinds of questions you get in an exam.
I'd like to know what are the best classes to take, like the most interesting classes, and what are the essential classes (like the ones we're required to take).
Also, I've heard this many times : There's a lot of reading. Define "a lot"?
And I also have this golden question: When you study a book in class, like okay you read and then you work on it. How do you work on it? Like what do you do in class when you're done reading a certain book.
These are all the questions I could think of right now. If I remember any more I'll ask you (If you don't mind lol).
This is super helpful thank you! I’m going to be filming some videos over the weekend so will make sure I film this to go up sometime in the next couple of weeks! If you do think of any other questions then just drop me a message! I’m normally pretty good at replying to either insta or twitter messages (both handles are @katie_may07).
Just on a side note, I’m assuming you’re American as you’ve used the terms high school and college? Correct me if I’m wrong! So the information I provide may be a little different to the American system but I will however be doing a term abroad in California this autumn so will do an updated version with the American system once I’m out there ☺️
@@KatieMay7 Thank you so much!!
And actually, omg i'm horrible for laughing at this but it's the first time somebody mistakes me for an American. I'm actually Arab. I'm Lebanese but I was trying to get my point across. I should have used 'university'.
Also yes, I know the systems must VERY DIFFERENT but i'm trying to gather as much information as I can. Thanks again! ❤
Oh that makes total sense!
can you share the total fees for studying English Literature
Well it depends on if you’re domestic student or international. Domestic students pay £9250 a year across the whole of the UK no matter what subject. For international students you’d have to check with individual universities!
does Cardiff cater around intersectional texts by any chance? after the first year anyway..?
Hi, I’m not entirely sure what you mean by intersectional texts but let me know exactly what you mean and hopefully I’ll be able to answer your question!
@@KatieMay7 Hi there! I was thinking more on the line of global texts that study a range of topics like 'The Color Purple' for example..? That possibly explore a range of backgrounds and paths..? Thank you sm xx
Yes! So I know for second year modules one of my friends has done. It’s a Wild West module and an African American module. Personally my contemporary poetry module last term covered the UK, Ireland and America and different backgrounds within each of these for example. Poetry written by both UK and American immigrants. So there’s quite a lot of scope for picking modules that cover a range of backgrounds etc. Hope this helps ☺️
Katie May yes thank u this was rlly helpful!! :)) x
hey, do you have a reading list for cardiff? i’m doing lit in september xx
Hey! I actually don’t have one easily accessible and they used to have them all on the uni website but they don’t seem to be there anymore! If you have access to learning central already you should be able to access them in there though! Hope that helps!
And have fun at Cardiff!! You’ll have the best time ☺️
What are the career prospects if one takes up English lit??
In what sense?
Katie May What jobs you can get.
Aparupa Sinha do you live in India?
@@yourblackstar19 there is a variety of jobs x
How many contact hours do you have in 2nd year?
Heidi so I currently have 8 and next term I have 9! xx
Thank you for this, super helpful! Can I ask roughly on average how many lectures/seminars you have a week in 1st year? Only because I'm debating commuting and was interested how many times I'd have to attend Uni a week? :)
I had lectures/seminars every day in first year, as did most of my friends. But it really depends on your modules so difficult to say. I’d recommend messaging the uni and asking if they have a rough timetable even if it isn’t entirely accurate ☺️
What uni did you guys go to? 😊
Cardiff ☺️
