    I need to rant, because people are turning "this is OS is not for me" into "this OS is trash" again. I expected some pushback from advanced users who are comfortable managing their own OS and understandably don't want a more locked-down system. I didn't expect them to be quite this boneheaded though.
    1. Nobody is saying that this OS is for everyone. Regular Windows 10 will probably stick around for at least another decade, exactly because some users need or want full control.
    2. Even so, how can so many people not seem to at least understand the value of apps not being able to randomly access any part of your OS whenever they feel like it? Or the value of a permission management system. Even desktop Linux has it, it's not some "stupid mobile feature". Why would anyone think being able to manage camera, microphone and location access on an app-by-app basis is a bad thing? Or why would you want any of your programs to edit the system registry and mess things up?
    3. How can so many people not see that the majority of users DO NOT want to manage their own OS and security? They want to scroll through websites, video-call their family members, edit photos, send emails and watch Netflix, preferably with as much battery life and performance as possible. Managed systems like 10X are for them, the actual majority of users, not the 10% who have complex, custom workflows.
    4. 10X might still easily turn out to be unsuccessful for of all the reasons I listed in the video. But the "nobody wants a managed OS" crowd needs to stop. This argument is simply wrong and it is keeping Microsoft from trying to push through important security, privacy and performance improvements to people who would actually need it the most.

      This model has already 'failed' though. People gave iPads to their grandmas and children. The device sold like hotcakes but nobody used them out side of those two demographics. The problem is that these demos are not very profitable.
      Apple has been actively trying to reverse this damage in the past 5 years with iPad Pro, with horrendous results.

      1) Advanced users don't want to be told "you'll be fine for a few more years, but not for long. You have maybe a decade, then you are f***d"
      2) Because it gives all the control to the OS and thus the company that owns the OS. They don't want to give Apple or Microsoft that much power. Securing your cam and mic can be done without having a despotic OS, hence your linux example
      3) They do see it, they just don't like it. Advanced users don't want to be abandoned on the side just because aunt Betty is tech-illiterate and there are more aunt Bettys than advanced users
      4) Advanced users are overreacting like this because they want to smother the idea in the crib. If it takes hold there's no going back, like it happened in the mobile world.

But for the more consumery stuff they've let it all fall flat so far. 10X is dead, 11 came to its rescue and right away went out of its boundaries with stuff like forceful MS login, more broken updates or the Edge pay drama, Project Reunion and WinUI 3 have been a mess, adoption of .NET Core is fractured, Chrome OS keeps eating up marketshare and Linux is **actually gaining mindshare** with small steps like the imminent launch of the Steam Deck.

      Take off the Microsoft fan goggles if you have them. Dual screens will never catch on at the dawn of foldable screens. If your only argument against folding displays is price and durability then I've got news for you, that will inevitably get better. All this R&D on dual displays is pointless. Microsoft should dive into making Windows smaller not building up Android.

    • @Oystein87
      @Oystein87 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      How!? A foldable does the exact same thing but without a big bezel between the screens.. A foldable you can use as one big screen or 2 or more smaller screens.
      Dual screens will just be a dual screen no matter what.

    • @lcarusfp
      @lcarusfp 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Wandtket I highly doubt that foldables will catch on. With a proper dual screen setup and a good launch it can be the thing that people are buying into. the biggest problem with foldables now are that they have a bad rep of being undarable and the fucking bend. In a world without dual screens this is no problem. But now imagine people buying into dual screens. The progression of foldables will be not as interesting because people now have dual screens. Now the foldable is truly ready with proper materials. Who cares people already have their two screes infront of them. Depending how long R&D takes people simply see their dual screen device as superior because yeah that's how things are and difficult to push to a new device.
      Products don't win because they are better, but mostly because they are there at the right time. That's why micorsoft is pushing their foldables. They work now and are durable. If the foldable technology is there, their new OS has no real drawback to adjust to foldables. And if it takes longer. Microsoft has a headstart in technology and manufactoring. It is a great move

    One of the greatest strengths of Windows is its backwards compatibility. In the extreme case, you can run a .com and some .exe files from the 1980s. Yes things evolve and should but some things get orphaned and shouldn’t die simply because of progress. Having a emulator as Windows evolves will keep the legacy one off apps alive.
    If we can have Amiga or TRS-80 emulators, we can have legacy Windows emulators. The challenge is that legacy Windows has a lot of esoteric baggage. Things like .NET and DCOM objects need API layers which have huge libraries. This is why Windows emulators on Linux are buggy in my experience as they can’t quite maintain true compatibility.

      Really? Backward compatibility? I remember, in my teenage years each time I installed a new version of windows I had to make a dual boot for a while, cos games and much other software that ran on 98 wouldn't run on XP, then they wouldn't run on 7. Backward compatibility really came with 10, which I discarded after a few years for Linux.

      That isn't going to happen anytime soon. Just look at all the important operating systems out there.
      The windows kernel goes back to 1993, Linux was first developed in 1991 but incorporates a lot of ideas from Unix dating back to the 1960s. All of Apples operating systems are based on Darwin which again is based on a BSD from the 70s.
      Similar things are true about Solaris.
      Fuchsia might be the only general purpose operating system that has been developed mostly from the ground up in a very long time.
      It is easy to see why. If the newly developed operating system is similar to the ones in existence, updating them is much easier and less painful for developers.
      If it is very different you use decades worth of developer experience and written software.

    • @jwaffe

      It's, IMO, a mix of business problems and technical problems.
      Sometimes Microsoft introduces new ways of interacting with the OS, like UWP, RT, etc, and the hope of these projects was to replace some of the "cruft" that's built up over the years. The problem is, in a corporate setting it's pretty easy to get long-term funding to do something the first time (you're making something that didn't exist before), it's very hard to get funding to replace something that already works (when you could be working on shiny new features that the marketing team can put in commercials).
      Even if you did get the funding to do this (like UWP, or RT), your project is limited by your adoption, realistically only brand new projects will attempt to use the newest, shiniest technology, and every other third party developer will not go out of their way to spend (potentially millions) throwing everything they already wrote away and starting over just to make Windows a better OS (and for no benefit to the developer themselves).
      If you were to throw out everything and start over completely (as in, delete everything in the OS and start from scratch), there's still other problems. There's an expectation of backwards compatibility in Windows (search for Raymond Chen if you want to read more about that); a total rewrite that attempted to be backwards compatible would be nerfed dramatically, because some APIs, by their very existence, introduce design limitations that keep you stuck in the past. If you just ignore backwards compatibility completely, again the success depends entirely on adoption, Windows Phone tried something like this and failed, because it didn't achieve marketshare.
      Hope that helps explain it a little, it would be nice if I didn't have to deal with the mess that is winapi and some of the other (rather less than optimal) design decisions in Windows, but personally I don't expect it to change anytime soon.

    I also thing, similarly, they could offer a better instalation wizard to make this be more attractive to app(dot)exe installers and lull the Win32 developers into the system, instead of forcing it. Also, it'd be nice if it wasn't as hard for many of these things to be modded, specially for game modding, while offering a semi-open way to allow the games to open or close their games to be moddable on the resource files or open or close part of the code to be editable (thinking of games which could use registry and localization files, e.g., Europa Universalis IV).

      Morten Holsmo there are a few apps which I still have to use with Windows, but only because I am forced to by their developers. TBH, I just can’t stand how much I have to babysit Windows so that it will keep working. If I need something complicated where I need reliability and low level access to components, I use Linux or Android . If I want something simple that just needs to work, I use MacOS or iOS. As virtualization and containers like Wine improve, Im finding I just don’t see any benefits from using Windows to do really anything anymore. I find that most of my legacy applications run better under Wine or virtualization than on modern Windows. One of my biggest annoyances in administrating all OS’s is like you said, there is no nice or consistent way to affect changes to settings under Windows. Is it in settings? Control panel? Some other submenu? Many times, I find there is no UI way to monitor or affect the needed changes and I have to take a trip to the registry to make new keys or hunt for some obscure power shell or other command. Under Linux or Mac these same things are much better documented and accessible. At the end of the day it’s about what my time is worth and how long I want to try to make Windows do things that have been standard or within easy reach on literally any other OS for years.

    • @thejpkotor
      @thejpkotor 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      How original... seems like they are once again trying to play catch-up to things google and Apple have already implemented. Except... they aren’t sure if they can really make it work. The device looks hideous, especially with the hinge right in the way of the content. It isn’t really ‘dual screen’ so much as a single screen broken up with a crappy hinge. I’m not impressed with edge, it’s basically Microsoft throwing cheap paint on top of standard Chromium and adding some half hearted features. You’ll always get better mileage just using chrome as google packages it or just chromium. Much more reliable and crashes less. The one redeeming quality Windows had in the past, even if there were major stability issues was some sort of ‘personality’ about the system. Aesthetics or visuals that made working with the OS seem alive. Since 8, 10 and it seems going forward, it isn’t just the flat UI, there is just no soul in it anymore. It’s a very cold, tedious OS to work with. Add to that that there is no planning or thought behind the way any of the menus or interfaces work anymore. I used to really like Windows, then I tolerated it, now I just hate it. They seem incapable of coming up with anything new that is good. Their next best step is to ripoff and take cues from Google and Apple. This looks very Android-eske in its aesthetic and it’s painfully transparent. I have no interest in an underpowered, overpriced as this will no doubt be ‘laptop’ I’d be better off buying a real computer or just a tablet. It’s too ‘middle road’ I doubt there is a real audience for it, besides people who just have cash sitting around with nothing better to buy.

    One of my biggest problems with modern OS's is the number of abstraction layers between the user and the system itself, as well as the number of restrictions and management features, preventing people from customizing their user experience sufficiently. I like to have access to my equipment not just at a gui level with constant an incessant permission requests, but at a hardware and software level as well (I'd rather manage the registry directly to control resources and software options). For this, I actually use Windows 7 on most of my PC's, I use 10 on a couple, but mostly on the lesser used ones.

    Microsoft has changed so much in these years but still, I cannot understand why they are not proposing new tools for development. I mean C# .net Visual Basic, etc. are still high in demand but with legacy and corporate. Small software houses are using electron since finding a Node.js and Html front end engineer is easier and they don't need to switch codebase for mac and Linux. Where is UWP positioned in this landscape? Every year we say it is a dying platform but there is no alternative nowadays. And I don't think new developers are gonna invest in a new language just for that. Apps are crucial for the future of windows and find a development tool that meets the expectation of new developers is fundamental for future adoption. Microsoft is pushing the strategy of trying to include as many technologies in Windows to make it their hub for future services and products. But I'm sorry, I don't see their vision for the future of app development here.
    Apple, on the other hand, has started earlier merging the codebase and OS structure with iOS. Catalina's new partitioning system is a clear example. Then, they start to gradually introduce Bridge OS and ARM computing giving it more and more tasks. Now they have showcased their new development tool for unifying their ecosystem. Developing for Mac, iPhone, and iPad at the same time, using the same libraries (think about Metal) in one purchase will be easier and easier. The path is clear on this end.
    Microsoft introduced Surface lineup for pushing lazy OEMs, maybe now it's time to do something like that for developers.

    The problem here is that Microsoft is trying to solve a Microsoft problem, not a (perceived) consumer problem.

    Great presentation and very fluid delivery. Nice video to watch. Sadly the recent update debacles from Redmond do little to persuade me that a more managed approach will be successful. If it remains uniquely on these new mobile devices it has an understandable place in the ecosystem, but my view is that bringing this approach to PC’s will make them even more unsteady than they are now.

    "There shouldn't be a need for antivirus software"
    Lmao
    Wait, they say Macs never get viruses... could this be kinda legit?
    Edit: Yes, alright alright, I'm wrong. I didn't wanna seem too harsh in the comment, and the argument that Macs don't get viruses seems to be an often repeated one.

      Macs are as vulnerable as Windows... Honestly if you manage it right, any system can be "virus-free".
      Linux much less so. The code is managed by exponentially more people than Windows and Mac combined, which means any kind of security holes are patched hours after finding it and the solution pushed to systems weeks (or whenever you want) after knowledge of it.
      Unless you pluck some weirdish app from internet or a command to paste in Terminal/Powershell in any one of these, you're pretty much good to go.

      Im doubtful myself. Haven't seen a widows update yet that hasn't created some type of hole in the system. I've stopped at 7 and will probably shift to linux before i let windows 10 even close to my main unit.

    One gripe I have with this is, the windows store currently on windows 10 devices is really slow and unreliable in terms of updating apps.

    • @TechAltar
      @TechAltar  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, they really need to work on that. But Microsoft was surprisingly not pushing the store at all relating to 10x. They only mentioned it once and very briefly during the whole presentation, so I don't think it's a big focus area

    One of my favorite channels on TH-cam. I think Windows 10X it's very interesting and brings some new possibilities and horizons for the users. The details about containerized apps, security and updates are just "the perfect world" for Microsoft. I hope for their success!

    I heard something about the Duo only having 4G due to the selection of CPU. This would suggest that it will be obsolete when released, and will be followed by a delay while a 5G version is put into production, leading to confusion among buyers, given the cost of the device, as to whether to buy immediately or wait. I hope this issue is resolved soon.

    This makes me a little nervous. Windows 8 tried to sit between a desktop and a tablet os, and frustrated users. Will 10x do the same sitting somewhere between an unmanaged system and a managed system? It feels like it’s trying to be all things for all people again, which imho is a terrible approach. Create a platform that is appropriate for the device it targets - this offers the best user experience

    Here me out... Rollable display that has adaptible UI originating from Windowx. Imagine a decice that is a complete work station thats portable and versatile. One moment its a phone or table, then expand it to a laptop size for more productive work time, then bring it home and plug it in to a performance inhancer of some type. At the work station it could either function has a display, keyboard, or even a flatop pc of sorts (perfect for standing)

    Microsoft really needs to perfect it's touch control in Windows. Surface pro, even, today still feels cluncky to use with touch only. It's useable, but misclicks make it feel really frustrating to use with touch.

    Isn't this windows 10x OS just permanent split screen? I mean what's the difference between having this tablet that folds and having an unfold-able tablet that is in perma screen split? Well the single unit will break less often because there's no hinges. But I'm open to it. Maybe it will have functionalities that cannot be achieved by a single screen tablet. Also having this thing fold means if you want to watch a movie then you have this huge gap in the middle

    As long as I can get my essential apps, I don't care about the OS.
    Banking, Finances, Deliveries, Transportations.
    And I really want to see 3rd OS that's completely different from existings and the only company that I know can do this is Microsoft.
    They have the technologies, patents, resources to make it happen.
