@@markentwistle9970 it feels like the other way round for me. Closed back just has far more versatility and the low end you sacrifice alongside the sound leak from open backs is just not really worth it unless if you live alone or can actually afford to spend time sitting in a silent room listening to music. The pricing a good pair of open backs is not friendly for budget listeners.

It's all preference. I bounce back and fourth between open and closed back. For me though I enjoy the sound stage, imaging and details that open back headphones put out. I need to hear everything when I play. Bass isn't a priority for me .

EXTREMELY good open back audio quality, both exceptional for gaming and music, really good build quality, plug and play (no bs software), two types of ear cushions which are both phenomenal for comfort and sound, really good comfort (atleast for me), and an exceptional microphone. It also comes with extra cables and a carrying case. It is just really worth $170 imho. Drop also has really good shipping and customer support. Just one touch about build quality. I've had the PC37x for a longggg time, and just got the 38x. I have never had QC issues, and I know that the plastic might feel cheap, but it is actually pretty strong and durable. I know the 37x has the same build on the top band, and the bracket doesn't pop out, and I've had the headset for about 2 years. I truly think that you might just have a defective product, because both my 37x which I've had for 2 years, and 38x doesn't do that. I really think that this headphone review mostly subjective, and I mostly respect that. The only thing about this headset for me, is that I wouldn't recommend it to someone who is in a loud or noisy environment, that's it. I also really do feel bad for you that you probably got a defective copy (talking about the headband piece popping out).

It is the best headset I've ever owned. I pair it with my Sennheiser GSX1000 for gaming audio, for music I simply use my Focusrite 212. I prefer the ear cushions that came installed with it rather than the other ones as it has more openness to them. I use them for my Quest 2 for VR gaming and the extra cable that comes works perfectly for the Quest 2.

Praising the M50X reassured me, that while I love his reviews and honesty, I myself am better off watching audio related stuff somewhere else. The M50x to me is a plain unrealistic and boomy experience with too extended highs. The PC38x outperforms it in music AND gaming. I can understand his criticism about it being plastic all over, but I don‘t think the excessive bending is anything to go by. It‘s the same design since the Game One and many users still use that and like the reliability and build quality over the years. That‘s saying more to me about Sennheisers quality than pulling the headset apart.

    • @87detto
      @87detto 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Oh and very jarring too: He compares PC38x and HD58x and says they sound the same / similar. But what he doesnt mention is that the pc38x has way way better imaging and soundstage, which is imortant for gaming, and also is bad on the M50x for example.

    • @TheTechne

As you might have caught from the video, I never claim to and never want to be an audiophile. Yes I love the m50 and also prefer more highs, again this is a gamer review and I am a gamer. I have watched other reviews on this set and 95% of them are from audiophiles that might game sometimes. So for a "gamer" I highly believe there are better options than this headset at this price

@@LordGuilliman Nah you dont need an amp for these at all. It might benefit in a small way, but theyre only 29 ohms impedence (for reference, the similarly sounding Sennheiser HD58x is 150 ohms, and while an amp would help the sound on those a good amount, it still performs pretty well via the controller). Basically one of the major upsides of these is that they sound so good and are made to drive extremely well from your console or phone

  • @Papa_Swish
    @Papa_Swish 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

You say it feels flimsy because it's plastic, and then demonstrate by stretching the headset in a way that no normal person would *ever* do just to prove a point. Nobody is going to stretch their $160 headset so the cups are almost 90° from each other, and even then, the headset didn't even break, the rail just popped out.
Also, what's the purpose of a headset? To produce audio and allow the user to communicate clearly. Does this headset do both of those things to a stellar level? Yes, far better than similarly priced headsets.

After looking at them the first time I was thinking about it, I noticed the ear cup design. To be honest everything may be ok for the headset, except the comfort and durability as this guy showed.

I know this is old, but this is terrible.
PC38X is still one of the best gaming headphones. Better imaging, better soundstage, open-back (which won't matter in 99% of circumstances), build quality is really good (plastic is usually to keep the weight down Senn does it with most of their headphones don't be stupid with them and you shouldn't have a problem), and the price seriously? Less than $200 in the US... Doesn't even need a dac/amp (I plug them in with a USB dongle if that tells you anything) and mic is functional enough with a auto mute. It is literally everything thing you need and one of the best sound quality wise you can get for gaming and even sound good for movies and music as well. It is a complete package.
I am an audiophile and still chose them over much more expensive headphones I have for gaming. They are better for gaming than even something like Audeze's LCD-GX, which about $800 last I checked. They are better than Astros, better than Mobius, better than...This video's hot take is bad.

I will preface this, this video is an opinion that’s the nature of a review so I am not saying he is wrong at all. I just don’t want people to miss out on what I view as a very high quality piece of kit on this single review.
My experience: I replaced my Arctis 7p and so far:
The sound and mic are far superior on pc. On ps5 the sound is better but I feel the mic is about the same.
Yes I can hear more outside the headset, it doesn’t lock the sound in, nature of being open back, but for me, not a problem. I can just about hear my phone on half volume while watching a video, I can clearly hear my phone on full volume. Both while next to me of course. But I rarely game in a noisy environment., not sure about techne here. The headset is very comfy in my view, especially after being broken in.
So I have lost out on wireless, but you know what, I’m not overly fussed, ps5 I can just take my pad with me, pc, okay, I have to take the headset off if I’m stepping away. No big deal, the wire itself, meh. Doesn’t bother me at all.
Overall a very positive experience and I love this set, best gaming headset I’ve ever owned.

    • @subjecttochange9320
      @subjecttochange9320 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

First off, the TYGR 300R is a standalone headphone ;)
So I´ll be going purely by that and disregard the microphone, you judge wether it´d play a role for you because of money constraints or so (The PC38X is among the best mics I heard on a full on headset so far, you buy the PC38X if you DONT wanna regret anything about sound quality, they basically specced almost all their retail price specc points into sound, not so much build quality if that makes sense)
So I´ll get the easy parts out first:
Build Quality: Clear winner is the TYGR 300R (Every Beyer shaped like that is a tank, also you can literally order each individual part to replace usually) , the Techne is right about the PC38X build not being at flagship level but it doesn´t try to do that to begin with so not a negative IMO. Tho if you´re known to abuse your cans, get the TYGRs.
TYGRs cable is fixed (personal pet peeve) and Sennheiser has its proprietary aaaaall-the-way-up cables that you don´t really find an aftermarket for, basically cables are the biggest weakness of both lol. Still manageable tho, I`m just neurotic like that.
Comfort: Personally I´d say the TYGRs are gonna be comfortable for more ppl, the Sennheiser pad shape doesn´t agree with everyone´s headshape, sometimes digs into behind the jaw. If your local tech store has any sennheisers with oval pads, try those on and see if they clash with your head shape but if not, they´re also quite comfotagle but less soft than the TYGR´s (still soft though, it´s HP pads :D) Headbands shouldn´t be an issue in any case. Both also real light, can be worn for a whole day if needed (Given you adjust them properly ofc)
      Sound:
That´s honestly gonna be personal preference, try to get a hold of frequency response graphs of both and ideally also a graph of your most used over ears and compare what you like about the sound of those and go by that. (PC38X has two sets of pads, velour ones makes it sound way less dry, closer to the TYGRs, but the regular ones really mean business aka sound that is conducive to locating and fragging threats, not bass anemic tho by any means if you´re used to neutral tuning, and little known fact the sound you hear seconds after putting cans on your head isn´t the sound you´ll experience the whole session long, brain tries to kinda even out volume differences over time to a degree so less bass won´t be as apparent after a while. But for music specifically, use the PC38´s velour pads)
Vocals will always be more intense on the Sennheiser one when comparing to non-senns, that´s just their thing. Smaller than usual soundstage for open backs and strong focus on mids, aka voices and string instruments and such. Not closed back small soundstage tho, just small-ish for open backs.
Detail is there with both but due to how their frequency response and sounstage size differs it´s delivered differently, but you won´t think you´re missing out on anything with either.
Both of them are cans that you can explore TOOL songs with ;)
      Soundstage/Imaging:
These two stats are kinda intertwined.
TYGR has the bigger sound stage and GREAT imaging, Beyer really focussed on that with this model over their existing ones, though if something is *meant* to sound faint in a song or game, it´ll sound faint and you might miss it if you´re distracted.
The PC38X has a smaller soundstage and I feel like that contributes to how most of its detail is right there in arm´s reach, but equally easy to discern.
I think a good way to put it is that the TYGR probably give you a better sense of how far away from you something is supposed to be, while the PC38X have the tighter directional imaging like which angle something is generally coming from, but they´re both great in both direction and distance, and my #1/2 for PvP gaming, to the point where it´s dependent on my mood that day and sometimes I think they both win the duel depending on the game because they both elevate different frequencies and different games´ sounds contain different amounts of the frequencies, I hope that make sense.
If you´re a hardcore semi-pro shooter player I think the PC38X is gonna be better in more titles, direction more important than distance IMO.
      Conclusion:
You won´t be taking either outside so deliberate only for inside use, and consider:
      - money, wether you NEED a mic too and how professional that needs to be (If you wanna go the content creation route get a dedicated mic either way)
      - How well you´ll treat them. More abuse will ALWAYS favor Beyers xD
      - If you´ll use them more for gaming or music/general use (super competitive implies PC38X better)
      - The kind of music you´ll play with them, if any. More bassy music favors the Beyers, If you´re more the classical type maybe the PC38X after all. Personally I run around the house with the TYGRs on more often, I just love Beyer sound.
Preference in sounstage also plays a role if you have one. TYGR are bigger but PC38X doesn´t feel claustrophobic by any means.

First video I've encountered from this channel and it's easily one the worst in terms of uneducating the viewer on what matters for a gaming headset. The major things that matter for a gaming headset are: built-in mic as qualifier to being a gaming headset at all (because the average non-streaming gamer doesn't want a separate mic device...otherwise, we'd just be looking for the best headset...period), comfortable to wear for however long the gaming sessions are, and great sound because...that's what they do...produce sound and many games have great sound. This headset nails all three of those and is easily worth $170.
It wins on comfort despite your bean brain attempt to call it personal preference. A lot of headphones feel more comfortable initially to wear (my own Sony 1000MX2s for instance), but even those become a drag when I wear them for more than a couple hours. The PC38x has never felt uncomfortable and that's mainly due to the cups being large enough to not clamp down on my large ears.
It has a built-in mic that overperforms for what it's needed for (voice communication, no one is going to think you have a cheap mic) AND it has a physical mute capability. This is a great convenience when you're in an open mic communication mode, but there are moments you need to be muted. No need to alt-tab or hunt for the software mute when you need to chew loudly, fart, burp, or someone walks in and starts talking to you. Being able to flip up the mic is a great and relevant feature.
Sound quality...I'll leave this one to what the audiophiles say. This is the headset to get for sound quality unless you want to spend $1600 for something that's slightly better. Sound quality matters, and it's not some silly personal preference or snobbishness. That you casually throw out "I have a $700 amp" means nothing to me. You still present as a complete idiot on this topic and spending on an $700 amp doesn't change that. Many audiophiles are pragmatic and that they recommend this or a jump to $1600 shows they aren't lying. They aren't suggesting anything in the mid $200s, $350, $500, $800, $1000 range just to pretend there's benefits to spending more - no, they are saying "these are it, stop looking for anything better unless you want to make the jump to spend $1600." Don't get me wrong, I think the sound in other headsets can be "good enough" to "great" when it comes to shallow impressions and general usability for the untrained ear that's just looking to be entertained. In that sense, you won't hear the benefit to the quality of this headset, but it will also not disappoint unless you do have a very skewed personal preference for super heavy base.
The only major feature/convenience for a headset for me is wireless. Yes, this headset is wired so you'll have to deal with a cable plugged in to your PC somewhere. Compared to wireless headsets, the sound produced out of these are far better and this is even more pronounced when you use a solid DAC/amp with them. They have low impedance so they are easily driven, but you can still get better results. If a wireless version of the PC38x came out, I might not buy them because they sound so great with the DAC I'm using (GSX 1000). I also wouldn't want the extra weight so that's why wireless as a feature is low priority unless the laws of physics can be defied and they're magically just as light and just as powerfully driven as if it there were an AMP involved.
I actively lost brain cells trying to get any value out of this review. It was an offensive justification for a clear miss in your roundup video. I'll have to do the opposite of subscribe and prompt TH-cam to not recommend any more of your videos to me ever.

I currently use HyperX Cloud Alphas for PC and PS4/5. I wanted to see what all the rage was about with “audiophile gaming open-back headset.” I wound up buying the Pc37x for $80 (-10 with a coupon) and after seeing this review , I am really glad I made that decision. I was wondering if I should’ve forked over the extra cash for the “newer, improved” version. I also couldn’t get past the yellow and from what I’ve read for gaming, there isn’t enough of a different between the two to warrant the premium price. Thanks Techne! You’re the man!

That Sennheiser headset will be around long after those you call a better build have fallen apart. Same build and design as most of their headsets basically. I have a set of 600's I've had for a decade or more and they still work and sound as amazing as day 1 if not better. Also with Sennheiser they have to be broken in basically and after a few weeks that clamping force loosens up to adjust to your head. It doesn't get sloppy it just conforms to fit and those pressure points disappear. The sound is more of a musical type sound than pure gaming, while at the same time being tuned to be excellent for gaming. I think maybe you've made yourself so accustomed to crappy gaming headset sound that when you hear something decent you reject it because it doesn't make you feel like your ears are going to bleed in the same way most Kraken headsets do. Also with open back you get a much wider sound stage with better spacial awareness. Open back of course does mean those around you will hear them but it isn't that dramatic unless you listen at levels that are much to loud or they're close to you and yes the next room is close. To use open backs that has to be taken into consideration so it can be a drawback but for myself it's well worth the trade off for that expanded sound stage and spacial awareness. Now everyone has opinions just like a certain part of the human anatomy and these have been mine...

I totally agree that the headphones feel cheap but that is because all the budget went into the drivers and EPOS wanted to make a premium sounding headphone while being able to be affordable. Had they made the headphones build quality even better than the headphone would have been $250-$300. I've had mine for a little over 2 years now and they are still great and when i got mine I had like 3 discounts into it and got $30 off at the time. It is cheap plastic but its strong enough just to hold on to.

I own an old pair of HyperXCloud II and I bought the PC38X & Beyerdynamic 990 pro to see if I could find something better for both gaming and recording/mixing music.
The PC38X were “unimpressive” in the sound department. Not entirely sure why that is but when I play music on Spotify, I find it’s lacking appropriate bass & high end frequencies. The pressure on the jaw is unbearable.
The 990 pro sound absolutely incredible with a solid high end which I love, and the bass is clear. It suits my music and gaming needs quite well. They are also much more comfortable.
This made me realize the HyperX Cloud II is definitely fine for gaming, not so much for music.

Your points are right on though, there are many times where my kid or Wife can hear my stuff out of my headset (Sennheiser 599SE Openbacks) though I have found that in games like COD or something I don't notice the outside noise. I'm buying a pair of Arctis 7 to try out and I'm worried that Closed Backs going to be rough to adjust to. Thank you for your thoughts on this one as I have looked at getting it myself, cheers.

You spread the headset so far apart it was almost flat. Then you were shocked it cracked open. Nobody is going to do that when putting it on. Its just like when mouse reviewers squeeze the bottom of the mouse... just a useless test to try and destroy the product with irregular use.
The fact is these and other sennheiser headsets are comfortable, they have a broadcast quality mic, and the open back sound stage is insanely good for competitive gaming.
Clearly you don't like open back since you have a wife and kid bothering you, but that doesn't mean you need to sh*t on it in a review. I think the jbl quantum pro would be a good headset for you.

oh boy here we go. Let me explain this to you again, as I did in the video. Are you going to flip your car 5 times at high speeds? No, at least we hope not, but the car companies test this for us! Now us a product reviewers test these product for maybe a month, so how can we speak on longevity, and build over time? I pull and twist many headsets, this is the first to partially break. Now open back for competitive gaming? Maybe if you live by yourself, and you're friends don't mind your sound bleed into your mic. So maybe you're a solo competitive player.

Not sure how loud it is at your home but with 70% + volume during gaming you will never hear any other sounds in the background with openback headphones, they just feel more free and open compared to closeback that feel very intimate and really close. Also you're friend gave you the best recommendation, these headphones are bar none the best pure audio "gaming" headphones on the market emphasis on the "gaming" part, there are studio grade headphones that can be used for gaming with an amp that would be better but cost a lot more. Also if you plan to use the mic on these headphones they are 1 of 3 best mics for gaming headphones. These are seriously the best gaming headphones you can own, they may not be the most premium physically but the sound quality is unbeatable for gaming in this price range. Comfort is obviously subjective.
