My dad was at this show, 3rd row. He saved the poster and original program, and watched the DVD at least once a week. They served a full thanksgiving meal before the concert and tickets were $25, which was expensive at the time, but hey it included dinner! Sadly he died of COVID about 2 months ago - this song would've played at his funeral if we had one. Miss you so much ❤️

I listened 2Early Stones & THIS Album(Last Waltz), Janis, Beatles.....Ya Know What I Mean. Once in a While I'll Listen to the OLD Metallica - cause I heard that TOO, But Happy 2STILL B A Hippy in 2021!! 😊✌🎶
To see him so young in this movie (of course I also watch this back then, in a movie theater though). So young.. and it was the end-of-an-era concert. Too young!
No matter how many bands they gather together for today's music festivals, nothing will ever match the talent and sheer greatness of what we see here on stage.
That's why whoever remixed this in recent years, felt it necessary to sweeten it with rousing applause at certain points. The original record didn't have all this cheering. They don't realize this material doesn't need to be sold like all the other s*** today.
If you like The Band, you should check out Ursa and the Major Key. They have a song called Only The Sky Is Blue that sounds pretty similar to The Band, and their whole album is influenced by The Band, Floyd, Grateful Dead, Beatles, etc.
I had this conversation with my daughter today. I asked her who would be on stage from the 90's (her teen/20's). She started giggling and said, "All the boy bands-NSYNC, The Boys On The Block, Menudo..." Actually I think the 90's would have a good line up with Soundgarden, The Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam...but no, no group of singers will top these singers here on stage. They had a staying power that remains to this day.
Robbie Robertson of the Band has died after a long illness, on Aug 9, 2023. He was 80. Guitarist-songwriter-singer, he worked extensively with Bob Dylan and Martin Scorsese. RIP.
I just love Rick Danko’s voice. They all had such uniquely beautiful voices. I think I love Levon’s voice, then I hear Richard Manuel, then I hear Rick. Then the music writing and lyrics, then the way they all play together. It never gets old. I loved them in high school and still so many years later.

This song really shows off how Dylan was not just a great writer, he had a fantastic voice, he carries the song with a much higher pitch, but its not overwhelming, it complements the layers of instrumentals and vocals, I think this song/The Last Waltz in general is peak Dylan vocals, damn...I wish I was alive then.
I agree - Dylans' voice was at its peak around that time. But I love his voice in general. His voice - being not "Beautiful" in the way it is for other singers - was what made HIS songs so GREAT!! His voice is honest & really IS, a BIG part of his sound. It HAS changed over the years, but that happens when ya sing as much & for as long HE has. It has OBVIOUSLY WORKED for him VERY well. A PERFECT voice for the MUSIC that HE Wrote & Performed. Beautiful.

Bob Dylan is a genius for this. In “I shall be released” he says “I see my light come shining from the west down to the east. Any day now I shall be released.” the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, therefore he’s in the latter part of his life, turned towards the East, reflecting on the past as the sun sets behind him, which signifies the “light shining from the west down to the east”. Great stuff so much depth here.
When I was 21 years old (22 years ago), I spent a single day in Orleans Parish Prison, it was a case of wrong place wrong time/mistaken identity of which I was compensated with a settlement check a couple years later. Still it was one long scary day. When I woke up in the morning I saw the sun from the skylight shining on the west wall and at the end of the day it was shining on the east wall. This song was in my head the whole time and I always wondered if this is what Bob meant. Anyway 'I saw my light shine from the west down to the east' and that's what it means to me even if that's not what it meant to Mr. Zimmerman.

Yes, you are right Robbie was self made. Grew up with a physically abusive stepfather, never knew his real dad, who died before Robbie was born. His stepfather discouraged him from dreaming about becoming a musician, fortunately his mother was more supportive, if not for her, we might never had heard of Robbie Robertson. Robbie wrote in his book, we weren't poor, poor, but we were not middle class either.

He was 13 when his mother had enough of the abuse, since Robbie's stepfather would beat them both, after he gave them both a black eye, she had enough. That is when she told Robbie his real dad was Jewish. He became close to his to uncles, he was close to his mother, and she was very supportive of his musical ambition.
What a monumental moment in music history...Martin Scorsese made one hell of a film...the sound and cinematography is just phenomenal for that time period!!

All the talent, all the legends on that stage at that time in their prime. Yet behind them at his piano sits Richard, the sweet, half broken, fallen angel. And for one gorgeous verse he owns all of it.

Once a week we had an open stage at the local pub, free drinks for the performers. At the and of the evening, we did this song all together. Happy days.
What a massive amount of talent on one stage! I'm pretty sure all of them are Rock & roll hall of famers now. I see a lot of comments thinking Clapton was singing the 2nd verse. That was Richard Manuel. Unmistakable beautiful voice!! Probably the best concert film ever done. One can only imagine what the after party was like! Yikes!!
no way man, Joni Mitchell easily ranks on this lineup. Most underrated performer in history, fabulous voice, terrific songwriter. Not everybody's cup of tea but definitely overlooked for no good reason. artistically better than almost all of these people.

June 9th 1990 at 5:30 a.m. I used the key only i possessed, to let myself out of jail and complete my journey out to Freedom and the first song I heard was I shall be released by the band. As an alcoholic I was glad to be released from prison that day I quit. At 63 years old I'm glad to be free still.
My friend got the tickets to CSN for the six of us. I asked who the lead in group was and he said I don't no. The opening group was The Band. Of course was familiar who they were but when they were done I could have left without hearing Crosby Stills and Nash and still had more than my money's worth. I love these guys.

@@channelcheddle Not sure he was very drunk, Robbie wrote in his book, before the went on stage Richard put out his hands and they were not shaking too much, if he was shaking he needed a drink. Robbie wrote something like just a few hiccups here and there nothing to sweat about. Richard said himself he didn't want to be on camera much. Sad he was so talented, as was Rick both kind of self destructive Richard more than Rick.
Well said!! At one point, most Rock'n'Roll stars did drugs & being messed up was "cool.". I wanted to be a Rock Star (when I was young), & I romanticized the "Disease of addiction." Lucky for me, we never met anyone who sold anything other than weed, so I was safe until I "grew up.". By then, OTHER drugs WERE AVAILABLE, but there was no more "Romanticizing" of them anymore, because SO MANY of the "Stars" whom I had "looked up to" had died because of OD's. It was certainly NOT cool anymore.
The artists, poets, musicians and singer's from this era are bygone. I'm very grateful that I got to experience and enjoy all of it in my lifetime. They conveyed emotion, deep meaning, bliss and the sadness of life all at the same time. There will be no other generation that can do that.

Ron Wood said that he and Ringo were just watching the concert and the promoter just dragged them up there. There was another drum set up there already as Neil Diamond had his drummer playing along with Levon Helm during Neil D's song. Whose guitar was Ron playing? Don't know that one.
Even though I'm a millennial just in my 20s discovered Bob's writings from my Uncle's old diary where his lyrics were written and since then I've only fallen in love with his work more and more and more. It gets more endearing with time. Wish I was born in your era. I love you legend Bob Dylan 💙❤️
But people always say the "dylan can't sing" nonsense, yet he's got one of the most unique voices in music history, it's the whole package with dylan it's his phrasing it's how malleable his voice can be to how he wants to sing that song in that moment and the lyrics, he's had many different vocal styles over his career you can't put him in a box and the people who don't get it just want to put him in that box but they can't so the only way they deal with how they can't put him in a box is that oh he can't sing, one day they will find out real music isn't about the ears it's about what it can transfers to the heart,soul and mind.

I was at my absolute lowest when I heard this song, somehow, come on some late-night, deep-dive radio station. I was outside of Dawson Creek, British Columbia, in the dead of winter, -35 degrees at least, ten hours away from my loved ones, driving to an oil site to location to work night shift. I almost cried. That's what that line of work felt like: prison. The pay was good but I didn't see any way out, no way to support myself or my loved ones. I resolved there and then that I would be free of that soul crushing work and I left it behind, and every time I hear this song, I mean specifically with Bob Dylan, it takes me back to that cold, dark night where I was alone and I resolved that it was not going to be my life anymore.
There’s so much going on here. Neil and Joni singing arm to arm, Levon and Ringo drumming together, and wait...is that Bob Dylan and Van Morrison. Wow, what a group of legends. If only I could go back in time.
We all loved Jaime ("Robbie") Robertson. Besides leaving us his awesome music and producing various albums etc., he left us his autobiography: "Testimony." I recommend it highly. He's a wonderful storyteller and it shows fully there.
I've returned to this performance countless times. It touches me in so many ways. As a full time musician myself, Robbie's words in the interview really gets to me. I can relate to that stare and the smile, there's nothing to do but to move forward and keep playing. It will be incredibly tough at times, but in the end it really is worth the effort and it will bring you unforgettable moments of adventure and friendship.
I was at this show w/my wife, Molly, and my brothers, Tim and Jamie, and their dates. The greatest event we ever experienced together. Went there in a white, stretch limo, driven by a young, long-haired guy with a right pinkie finger that had a four inch nail. All the better for scooping. We rocked all night long. It was so beautiful. At 6 a.m., the limo dropped me off at KSAN, where I was doing the morning show. Then he took the rest of the gang home to Marin. Don't remember how I got home. No Ubers around. I don't think I slept until late that following night. I still get overwhelmed w/the energy in that room. Every time I see this incredible footage, I can feel it. As lucky witnesses to greatness get to say, "I WAS THERE!"

Dylan is truly great. But the Band are every bit his peers. Did you know Dylan's first credited songwriting collaboration was with Richard Manuel? Did you know Clapton disbanded Cream after he heard The Band, and that at one point George Harrison quite the Beatles and went to hang out with The Band instead?
@@sambac2053 Eric Clapton did say he felt cream couldn't compare to the band BUT that was not the reason for disbanding cream. If you read his autobiography he had just got fed up with the whole supergroup thing; the touring and the infighting in the band. Every stop on the road he'd be calling management and saying I want to come home and they'd say just one more week . He also said that if he ginger and jack had been able to talk through their problems they may have lasted. So cream was breaking up anyway nothing to do with the band but Eric did feel that the band were the best and he even had thoughts of joining them . Driving up to meet them in his head he was joining them he said

Clapton also said when he heard them he decided the whole endless guitar solos thing was shallow,that he was embarrassed,and that what they were doing was real .

I saw this as a movie in a theater, great. Wish it would be played again on a big screen so I could share it with my children and grandchildren (makes me really old). But, all of them have experienced good music through me. Makes me happy.

I adore the Rolling Thunder Revue tapes and that was just a couple years prior to this. I felt like Dylan’s phrasing live made the songs so dynamic.

Bob Dylan is a genius for this. In “I shall be released” he says “I see my light come shining from the west down to the east. Any day now I shall be released.” the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, therefore he’s in the latter part of his life, turned towards the East, reflecting on the past as the sun sets behind him, which signifies the “light shining from the west down to the east”. Great stuff so much depth here.

When I was 21 years old (22 years ago), I spent a single day in Orleans Parish Prison, it was a case of wrong place wrong time/mistaken identity of which I was compensated with a settlement check a couple years later. Still it was one long scary day. When I woke up in the morning I saw the sun from the skylight shining on the west wall and at the end of the day it was shining on the east wall. This song was in my head the whole time and I always wondered if this is what Bob meant. Anyway 'I saw my light shine from the west down to the east' and that's what it means to me even if that's not what it meant to Mr. Zimmerman.

Robbie was more than just cute he was gorgeous, movie star looks, and lots of charisma. Rick not bad looking either. Like all The Band members, but when it comes to looks I have to single out Robbie and Rick.
Yes, you are right Robbie was self made. Grew up with a physically abusive stepfather, never knew his real dad, who died before Robbie was born. His stepfather discouraged him from dreaming about becoming a musician, fortunately his mother was more supportive, if not for her, we might never had heard of Robbie Robertson. Robbie wrote in his book, we weren't poor, poor, but we were not middle class either.

He was 13 when his mother had enough of the abuse, since Robbie's stepfather would beat them both, after he gave them both a black eye, she had enough. That is when she told Robbie his real dad was Jewish. He became close to his to uncles, he was close to his mother, and she was very supportive of his musical ambition.

That was Richard Manuel. Unmistakable beautiful voice!! Probably the best concert film ever done. One can only imagine what the after party was like! Yikes!!

no way man, Joni Mitchell easily ranks on this lineup. Most underrated performer in history, fabulous voice, terrific songwriter. Not everybody's cup of tea but definitely overlooked for no good reason. artistically better than almost all of these people.

As an alcoholic I was glad to be released from prison that day I quit. At 63 years old I'm glad to be free still.

My friend got the tickets to CSN for the six of us. I asked who the lead in group was and he said I don't no. The opening group was The Band. Of course was familiar who they were but when they were done I could have left without hearing Crosby Stills and Nash and still had more than my money's worth. I love these guys.

@@hannejeppesen1809 You're correct. Richard was apparently very drunk that evening, and generally wasn't well. If you watch the whole film, he doesn't appear on screen a whole lot. I didn't know he requested not to be filmed much, but it doesn't surprise me.
@@channelcheddle Not sure he was very drunk, Robbie wrote in his book, before the went on stage Richard put out his hands and they were not shaking too much, if he was shaking he needed a drink. Robbie wrote something like just a few hiccups here and there nothing to sweat about. Richard said himself he didn't want to be on camera much. Sad he was so talented, as was Rick both kind of self destructive Richard more than Rick.

Lot of us as addicted to the lifestyle as the "stuff". Yeh me too ,took a while.
Well said!! At one point, most Rock'n'Roll stars did drugs & being messed up was "cool.". I wanted to be a Rock Star (when I was young), & I romanticized the "Disease of addiction." Lucky for me, we never met anyone who sold anything other than weed, so I was safe until I "grew up.". By then, OTHER drugs WERE AVAILABLE, but there was no more "Romanticizing" of them anymore, because SO MANY of the "Stars" whom I had "looked up to" had died because of OD's. It was certainly NOT cool anymore.
The artists, poets, musicians and singer's from this era are bygone. I'm very grateful that I got to experience and enjoy all of it in my lifetime. They conveyed emotion, deep meaning, bliss and the sadness of life all at the same time. There will be no other generation that can do that.

Ron Wood said that he and Ringo were just watching the concert and the promoter just dragged them up there. There was another drum set up there already as Neil Diamond had his drummer playing along with Levon Helm during Neil D's song. Whose guitar was Ron playing? Don't know that one.

Even though I'm a millennial just in my 20s discovered Bob's writings from my Uncle's old diary where his lyrics were written and since then I've only fallen in love with his work more and more and more. It gets more endearing with time.

But people always say the "dylan can't sing" nonsense, yet he's got one of the most unique voices in music history, it's the whole package with dylan it's his phrasing it's how malleable his voice can be to how he wants to sing that song in that moment and the lyrics, he's had many different vocal styles over his career you can't put him in a box and the people who don't get it just want to put him in that box but they can't so the only way they deal with how they can't put him in a box is that oh he can't sing, one day they will find out real music isn't about the ears it's about what it can transfers to the heart,soul and mind.

What always gets me is Robbie’s face after he says “no doubt about it”. He knew the toll it was taking on Rick, Levon, and especially Richard.
The Band was one cool group of gifted musicians. Real talent.
I was at my absolute lowest when I heard this song, somehow, come on some late-night, deep-dive radio station. I was outside of Dawson Creek, British Columbia, in the dead of winter, -35 degrees at least, ten hours away from my loved ones, driving to an oil site to location to work night shift. I almost cried. That's what that line of work felt like: prison. The pay was good but I didn't see any way out, no way to support myself or my loved ones. I resolved there and then that I would be free of that soul crushing work and I left it behind, and every time I hear this song, I mean specifically with Bob Dylan, it takes me back to that cold, dark night where I was alone and I resolved that it was not going to be my life anymore.

We all loved Jaime ("Robbie") Robertson. Besides leaving us his awesome music and producing various albums etc., he left us his autobiography: "Testimony." I recommend it highly. He's a wonderful storyteller and it shows fully there.

I've returned to this performance countless times. It touches me in so many ways. As a full time musician myself, Robbie's words in the interview really gets to me. I can relate to that stare and the smile, there's nothing to do but to move forward and keep playing. It will be incredibly tough at times, but in the end it really is worth the effort and it will bring you unforgettable moments of adventure and friendship.

I was at this show w/my wife, Molly, and my brothers, Tim and Jamie, and their dates. The greatest event we ever experienced together. Went there in a white, stretch limo, driven by a young, long-haired guy with a right pinkie finger that had a four inch nail. All the better for scooping. We rocked all night long. It was so beautiful. At 6 a.m., the limo dropped me off at KSAN, where I was doing the morning show. Then he took the rest of the gang home to Marin. Don't remember how I got home. No Ubers around. I don't think I slept until late that following night. I still get overwhelmed w/the energy in that room. Every time I see this incredible footage, I can feel it. As lucky witnesses to greatness get to say, "I WAS THERE!"

I remember singing that in my 30s and here I am.. in my 60s. :) yup wow. and going down the list, Janis, Buddy Holly, Elvis.. and listing the people gone, I saw Janis Joplin too.. didn't get to see Elvis ..

Dylan is truly great. But the Band are every bit his peers. Did you know Dylan's first credited songwriting collaboration was with Richard Manuel? Did you know Clapton disbanded Cream after he heard The Band, and that at one point George Harrison quite the Beatles and went to hang out with The Band instead?
@@sambac2053 Eric Clapton did say he felt cream couldn't compare to the band BUT that was not the reason for disbanding cream. If you read his autobiography he had just got fed up with the whole supergroup thing; the touring and the infighting in the band. Every stop on the road he'd be calling management and saying I want to come home and they'd say just one more week .
He also said that if he ginger and jack had been able to talk through their problems they may have lasted.
So cream was breaking up anyway nothing to do with the band but Eric did feel that the band were the best and he even had thoughts of joining them . Driving up to meet them in his head he was joining them he said
@@davidmellish3295 . I saw Cream ,and Blind Faith,and another Clapton outing. I saw the Band,and I saw them with Dylan,and Dylan without them .I did read Clapton's autobiography. And several interviews, He went and hung out in Woodstock, wanting to join them. Robbie Robertson has talked about it too. Clapton also said when he heard them he decided the whole endless guitar solos thing was shallow,that he was embarrassed,and that what they were doing was real .

I saw this as a movie in a theater, great. Wish it would be played again on a big screen so I could share it with my children and grandchildren (makes me really old). But, all of them have experienced good music through me. Makes me happy.
