Im a hiring mgr in retail, come in with a nice outfit, smile on your face, strong handshake, look interview dead straight into the face and ask alot of questions with enthusiasm....
I've been going to lots of job interviews and I think I came off as shy, nervous, and timid. So for my next interview, I'm going to try to be more confident and outgoing! This was a GREAT video.
I am a retailer and I been through interviews I failed. I gathered experiences with myself and my friends and discovered the reasons and what I should and should NOT do when you want to get the retail job. 1. No slippers, short pants, caps for interview 2. NO BADMOUTHING ABOUT PAST NASTY CUSTOMERS (EVEN IF THEY ASK) 3. Show confidence and positive energy( Smile, energetic, good posture) 4. Research a bit about the company (sell clothes, sell devices, sell watches etc) 5. Eye contact. They want you to have eye contact with customers so it's better you show basic eye contact with your interviewer. It's ok if you have no experience. IN this line, they won't care much about experience, unlike engineering jobs, banking etc. Always say you can, even if you doubt yourself a little.
It's like making 100 quick shirts that are shit in quality, instead of spending that time to make 1 quality shirt. Take ur time and be specific to the job so u stand out.
You should call or talk to the hiring manger if you can get the job to work over there. I'm trying to get a job and no one has called or anything with me, so I will go and pick my friend who has an interview with someone else and I'll be asking some questions like "I'm wondering if I can speak with the hiring manger?" you can try going to places and see if you get an job interview or not.
Tianna Burton hahaha say that again; and with karen sandiego's self confidence and personality who wouldn't wanna hire her. Those are the two aspects of my game that I still need to improve.
I've worked as a retail manager for years. I couldn't agree more with her comment about dressing professionally. The first impression you make is very important, so dress like it. Even if the store where you are applying is very casual, dressing professionally shows that you take the interview seriously. It's kinda like going on a first date. If the person you're going out with shows up in sweatpants and flip flops and looks like they just rolled out of bed, it might lead you to think that they don't feel that you were worth the effort to look nice. That's the same message you send to managers if you come to an interview looking like a bum.
No definitely not , retail is a great place to start . i would suggest starting with something like target or a supermarket just to gain customer service experience .But if you want to work in a clothing store with no experience you should list any volunteer work you have done just to show you can work well with people.
if I'm applying to a street wear clothing shop, wouldn't it be really awkward to come in in business attire? I feel that would look like i dont suit the role in that shop ..
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I'm pretty sure you just helped get a job at TJMaxx! The interviewer said that the interview went great! You've helped change so many lives I'm sure! We need more people like you! ✨💖✨
i'm 24years old and i haven't had a job before due to extreme anxiety. so i don't have any customer service experience, and i don't have any volunteer work in it either. HELP PLEASE. :"(
+Krystal O. I so get you. I was suffering from anxiety as well. I still have this problem but I do not let it affect me now. I have improved a lot and actually like to be around people. I would say just take some time off, if you can out off getting a job then take don't work for sometime. But in this time work on yourself, therapy and counselling sessions. Also do things you really enjoy like working out, sports, painting, crafting, reading...anything. Having a balanced life like working out, eating healthy...can help heaps with anxiety, stress. You could also try to volunteer (when the time is right) for some cause you are passionate or something you really enjoy, this should help with anxiety to some extent. Slowly you will see that you are making improvements and are ready to work. I would recommend start with a counselor and a healthy lifestyle. I hope I helped and don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions or anything. :)
Watching this a few hours before my very first interview for a retail stock job at Bed, Bath, & Beyond. I’m super nervous because I have no experience in customer service or retail or anything since I’ve never had a real job. I’m hoping it goes well. Thanks for the advice in this video!
Hi, Thank you for sharing this video, I learned a lot from your comments related to staying on topic whether the job be retail focused or office focused. You are so articulate, and passionate, and believable. I admire this Truth about you. I've had a lot of jobs when I was younger, however, now as I get older, I find it difficult to obtain that offer of employment. So now I am looking at retail jobs. I have to remember that not only looking the part, but being knowledgeable and staying on topic is key. Thanks again.
I am just laughing at these videos about how to get a job. As someone who has applied for jobs in retail and has worked in retail, it isn't that hard to get hired. While it does seem like I am coming off as conceited and naive, I speak from experience, researching, and just using common sense. "If I wanted to get hired, but didn't want to look desperate, what would I do?" Ideas like that people should keep in mind. If you don't have any job experience, do lots of volunteering and try to apply for jobs you know you can obtain with little to no experience. Some good entry level positions are ones in retail and/or restaurants. There are some other entry level jobs out there, but retail and restaurants (i.e. fast food and diners) are the big two. Also, if you can get work at a young age, then do so. If you are an adult and have no work experience, then do what I mentioned above or go to any local career fairs. Colleges and universities often have career fairs. Also, making friends helps you because friends give you references for jobs you are applying at. Not that hard to get a retail or even restaurant job if you are persistent, have good work ethic, and have friends.
I've applied in about 30 stores (both fastfood and retail) for the summer. not one call. not one single call. let alone an interview! I'm 20 and my student debts are growing and I have no way to replay them because no one wants to hire someone with 0 experience! what do I do???!!
***** ***** thank you so much! I'll be one of those annoying people who try to give you credit cards hahaha 😂 but hey, it's a job and I'll get a reference for "customer service" by the end of the summer so I ain't complaining! Besides, I work alongside wonderful people! :)
For all of you guys wondering why you may not be getting a call back, check and see how your resume really looks like and make sure you're not repeating words on it. From experience, I went in to a career counselor at my school and he made edits on my whole resume. When I changed it up, I started to get calls back and what not Happy Hunting
I'm 16 and I hand out CVs and apply online for the past 5 months it makes me cry that I've not got a job still and most of my friends do :( why can't I find a job
don't cry :( you are still very young . Just make sure that the stores you are applying to hire people under 18 , many stores only hire 18 and over. Also if you have friends that work try asking them to refer you .. sometimes its all about who you know ; )
lynsays channal you do know that after you apply, you need to go there and ask if they are still looking for someone. right? you tell them you have applied online and that you really wanna work. by the way, make sure you talk directly to the manager in charge of applications. i have at least three work experiences.
+lynsays channal Keep trying you're really young and just keep trying keep calling in or going up there and checking up on your application, it took me a very long time to find a job because I didn't get my license until I was 21 because I have cerebral palsy, I started looking for a job when I turned 16 and didn't find one until I was 19 and out of high school, being in high school and having no experience makes it very hard to get a job, it's kind of a catch 22 but have you tried wal-mart or somewhere like that their good about getting back to people quick and they hire pretty much everyone, keep your chin up
+lynsays channal you do know you have to go up there in person or either call and talk to the manager over the phone you know. Plus you have to read there age policy first before applying for any job. It not easy as it sound now that everyone is trying to go for that same position.
I have a job interview for factory connection on Monday and searching for inspiration and tips I can catch up on cause I haven't worked in a couple months due to my 2 year old. Thank you for these tips. It would be alittle easier if you would speak up just alittle bit girl. Thanks again!!!
All for a minimum wage job, with little to no benefits. Be your own boss, create your own business and work for yourself. She is saying nothing new. You will learn this and college. In USA they teach people to work for some one,not working fork yourself.
Karen, thank you for this video! You are so beautiful and you seem very sweet. Your advice was so great and when you gave your example of how to answer questions I was shocked! That was such a great answer
+LovelyishAmy i will no longer be posting on this page though so please check out my new youtube channel th-cam.com/channels/0EkwbMwCdOYjNlCkea0znA.html
But it's so hard because I have expierence in other things except retail... And every time I apply for a retail job it says "must have 1 year expierence in retail" and there's NO WAY around it. No matter now much you say your a hard worker or pick things up quickly they don't care....I've been applying for retail jobs for 5 years and haven't gotten a single job because of that. It's bullshit
try applying to smaller, independent stores and if all else fails - ask for work experience. This gives you a couple of weeks experience and they don't have to pay you. Start at the bottom, build your way up.
+fückin eh Apply for wal-mart, dollar general or Albertsons none of these require experience so that's a good stepping stone in the retail business Albertson's was my first job and wal-mart was my second retail job and they hire 16 and 17 year olds and Dollar General was my husband's first job
Just_me_and_my_life ive applied at wal-mart and dollarama many times before and didnt get a single call back (im canadian) but had no luck. i just got a job but i only got it because it was a job fair hiring mass amounts of people. atleast i get my smart serve for free out of it. i guess retail just isnt my calling...
I have an interview tomorrow and I am nervous enough but for some reason when you are speaking i get even more nervous and my stomach is doing flips! Will try to work on that and take your good advice. Thank you for this video!
It all depends on the day of the interview and who your interviewer is. You can be the most prepared person and have the best outfit, but if you get a scumbag or someone that is not interested in their managerial role then you will be disappointed. So far, I've only managed to get jobs in retail via friends. They passed on my CV to the HR department which then was followed by a phone interview with the store manager. The hardest part about getting a job in retail is not the interview, it is being recognised and being invited to that first interview stage. In the UK it seems that unless you come from a Spanish Speaking background, it is impossible to work for some of the high street brands such as Zara,Pull&Bear. Most employees there have doubtful hygiene and can't even speak the language properly, yet they manage to get the jobs simply because they speak a very popular language. But hey, stay positive and keep on trying.
I’ve never worked in retail, only the food service industry. I was asked how I feel about working in a commission based role. I related it to working for tips. In a way it’s like retail. You upsell the customer so their bill increases and they tip you off that amount. I feel like the service industry is a great place to learn customer service and it has a retail element to it. So don’t be discourage if you don’t have retail experience. Make it relate!
Thank you so much for posting this! I always get so nervous on interviews because I never know what they're gonna ask and if I'll answer correctly and what to wear. I actually have an interview in retail tomorrow morning and this video definitely calmed my nerves! :)
This Sunday is my last day at a job that I’ve been at for four years, I absolutely hate it and want to change it up. I get $8/hr and work 10-12hrs a day. I love working but get so nervous during interviews it’s actually one of my biggest fears
As much as I try to watch these videos, studying about the job, write down my interview questions, and practice talk into a camera or mirror, I can not for some reason do well in interviews. ANd it's very frustrating. The reason is because I have anxiety and because I can NOT bull shit talk. And no, it's not because I act weird or anything, I have good posture, direct eye contact, professional outfit, it's just cause I hate words and not a big talker. A lot of people in these videos will say "be yourself, and don't lie" but the highlight of these answers to these questions are lies... and ridiculously long, what is it, a speech? Am I getting graded after this? damn if I was a manager, I would see right through these "rehearsed" questions. And if anyone said "perfectionist" as a weakness, instantly I wouldn't considered them because I promise you that is the most over used lie I 've heard. to get a job like this, you have to be a good talker and bull shitter that knows how to study, otherwise it's gonna be a no go...I have a group interview tomorrow lol if I don't get the job, maybe seeing how the other candidates will help me learn to bull shit for the next one
she is right one guy try to sell me once i jacket i was pretty fat that time and he tell me stright away "It looks wonderfull on your " was a friend after says , if you loose 20 kg :) .... she is confident , know how to comunicate verbal and non verbal . she can do better jo b then retailler
It's difficult for retailers that require you to fill in a form where you have to tick whether you have little/some/lots of experience in that area such as do you know how to return an item ect. I'm able to talk about my transferable skills in the CV/ Cover letter however i don't believe that they even take that into consideration if you have no experience in the specific areas they're looking for.
Thank you so much, I was so nervous before I saw this video and I've been looking for a video like this to help me with my video interview at urban outfitters, i'm still a little nervous but you helped a lot. Keep doing what you do because I've never seen a video so informational and helpful. I also wan't to ask, how would i respond to questions like " describe a time when you thought you provided outstanding customer service ", " Tell us what has been your best work achievment to this point in your career. What made this achievement important? " or " Where do you see yourself in five years? "
Even though I have already landed retail jobs and currently work retail I still find these videos helpful because sadly as many times as I have done a resume and cover letter I still tend to get stumped it's so annoying
I am very nervous. I have my first interview tomorrow and do not know what exactly to wear or bring. It might be a group interview...but I am not even sure about that.
Awesome video, I just subscribed. I like your clear-cut, no nonsense, all common sense advice :) Question: I have an interview at a Steve Madden shoe store tomorrow. Do you have any knowledge of their trends and popular items?
thank you ! .. im not sure exactly what trends they are highlighting this season but i would suggest going on their website to see what they are focusing on. Steve madden is a company that offers "designer style" shoes without the designer prices so you may want to mention that during the interview when they ask why you want to work there. Also take some time to research the company history prior to the interview. And make when picking out your outfit you wear a shoe similar to something that would be sold in the store.
karen sandiego "designer style" shoes without the designer prices" - That's exactly what I was thinking, but I couldn't put it as eloquently as you. You're amazing! Thanks for the outfit tips too :)
Hey girl ! So I just got called for an interview at Bath and Body Works for Friday and I never worked in retail before. I'm really nervous because I am so bad when it comes to interviews. Your video helped me a lot. I am nervous as to what to answer if I'm asked a question about how to handle a rude customer... can you please give advice on that ??? :(
Tricia Ragoonauth heyyy Tricia , thanks for watching !! The important thing about rude customers is not to ever match their energy , kill them with kindness . You can say “when I have a rude customer i make a conscious effort to make sure that I do not match their energy , I express that I understand why they are upset and ask what I can do to make the situation better . If at that point I am unable to deescalate the situation I would call my manager over to talk to the customer all while never expressing anger or frustration to the customer “ Hope that helps ! : )
i am a high school senior with no experience in the work field at all but i am involved with school clubs would that be a good thing to say? Do stores hire people that are 17 with no experience? btw you're answer for the scarf store was amazing i can see why you get hired all the time, you are a very good speaker
+Natalie Vanessa Your resume don't need to contain much for a retailer. Your most relevant job exp, and a short description about yourself will be the key ones. But usually you call in to ask if there is any job. And they may just ask you for a walk-in interview.
+Natalie Vanessa If you have no work experience you usually just go in and ask for an application fill it out and give back to them and make sure you call or go in to the store every so often to check up on your application status If you want to do a resume just put down volunteer experiences you have had working with other people or activities that you have participated in that requires team work and your education. and Yes having a good cover letter is a huge plus as well.
I have a question a lot of times in job interviews the interviewer asks personal questions like what do you do when you are not working and I feel like its a trick question to try and catch you. What would be a decent way to answer that ?
Samantha Montes when the interviewer asks personal questions you tell them I’m sorry but I can’t answer those questions . They do that just to see how alert you are they are not supposed to ask you anything like your age , if your married, your sexuality, bla bla bla... if they ask about weaknesses just tell them I tend to work too hard
What I want to know is, if you're currently working at another clothing store or just left one, how would you respond to a question like, "Why did you leave" or "Why do you want to leave (insert store name here)?"
I have an interview at Urban Outfitters on Thursday and I wondering what questions will they ask me. I'm like freaking out on what to wear and also what to say.
I have a group interview for Urban outfitters this Thursday any tips? I have an outfit already, I got a jean western button up shirt slim fit, with slim straight khaki pants cuffed at the bottom low white socks and Jean color shoes. Any tips for the interview?
Easiest way to get hired is be attractive and have a jumpy personality. If not pleasing to the eye then dress nice as well and dress nice either way and say things like you’re excited to join the team. Don’t seem boring and drowsy
Im a hiring mgr in retail, come in with a nice outfit, smile on your face, strong handshake, look interview dead straight into the face and ask alot of questions with enthusiasm....

I completely agree...I had to rewind several times and still was unable to hear some things
Came to the comments to see if someone agreed with me lol
Basically all im hearing is you have to lie about everything! Cause the only way you get hired is if your an expert liar
If any supermarket ever asks you "Why do you want to work for us?" they're basically asking you to lie.

I have a interview tomorrow at boots, this really helped me, thank you x
Karen, thank you for this video! You are so beautiful and you seem very sweet. Your advice was so great and when you gave your example of how to answer questions I was shocked! That was such a great answer

Start at the bottom, build your way up.
i do that, the independant stores are even worse
+fückin eh Apply for wal-mart, dollar general or Albertsons none of these require experience so that's a good stepping stone in the retail business Albertson's was my first job and wal-mart was my second retail job and they hire 16 and 17 year olds and Dollar General was my husband's first job
Just_me_and_my_life ive applied at wal-mart and dollarama many times before and didnt get a single call back (im canadian) but had no luck. i just got a job but i only got it because it was a job fair hiring mass amounts of people. atleast i get my smart serve for free out of it. i guess retail just isnt my calling...
fückin eh Ah, okay then yeah retail isn't for everyone but it's good that you found a job
Girl thank for you're all advice, i got a work i'm starting on Monday, Thank u sow much.
Yes Girl!! I have an interview tomorrow and this video just got me pumped and motivated!
Woo! Girl your words blew me away , can't wait for my interview today
Thank you so much for posting this! I always get so nervous on interviews because I never know what they're gonna ask and if I'll answer correctly and what to wear. I actually have an interview in retail tomorrow morning and this video definitely calmed my nerves! :)
glad i could help :)
This was perfect. Thank you for posting!
No problem, thanks for watching !! : )
Great advice! Really helps me out with finding my first retail job.
I have my first ever job interview tomorrow, this is so so helpful thank you :)
I love this video, i've been on several successful interviews but still found these tips very useful!
I have an interview at uniqlo tomorrow 😅
Did you ever get hired??
Can you tell me what questions they ask me to
Hello?
The background music is really annoying
Paniz Esfandiari Nah its dope, don't be mad it ain't Taylor swift
I actually hear the music more than her voice sorry ; but video is informative
Thank you for posting this, you make my day, this helps me a lot with my preparing process for my job interview. Wish me luckkkk!!!!
she is right one guy try to sell me once i jacket i was pretty fat that time and he tell me stright away "It looks wonderfull on your " was a friend after says , if you loose 20 kg :) .... she is confident , know how to comunicate verbal and non verbal . she can do better jo b then retailler
Just had an interview at dress Barnes i hope i get the job
did u get it?
Target interview in the morning. Don't think I'll get it but hey.
How'd it go?
I'm curious as to how it went too! Thinking of applying
+Katrina Spotts went really well! I ended up getting the job!
+Tianna went good! I got the job!
+WoahhTeamJacob Woohoo! Congrats ☺☺☺☺
Thanks so much for this video I got my job !!!
Yayyy congrats !!
I am very nervous. I have my first interview tomorrow and do not know what exactly to wear or bring. It might be a group interview...but I am not even sure about that.
Awesome video, I just subscribed. I like your clear-cut, no nonsense, all common sense advice :)
Question: I have an interview at a Steve Madden shoe store tomorrow.
Job interview tomorrow at maurices. I've never even shopped there but heard great things. I'm so nervous 16 and first job lol
you speak the truth although I couldn’t watch d whole video because to me the background music was loud
Cut the background music! If I want that, I'll turn on my own music!
Thanks for the great tips! May I say Your facial structure is so pretty!
Awesome retail advice interview and youre cute toó :)! Thank you !
Thank You So Much !!! This made me feel so much better !
i have a target interview and i'm so excited!
So very helpful!!!! Thank you so much
You're welcome :) thanks for watching !!
thanks. I really need this right now.
Yeah I've sent out a shit tonne of applications. No call backs can't even make it to the interview stage.
I watched this before applying to John Lewis and I got it
Have my interview today at Nike, wish me luck.. 😬

Awesome video! I have an interview with Urban Outfitters next week. Do you have any advice about what they are looking for? Thanks!
Great video, really helped!! I'll be applying for a few jobs in the next week and I'll be using these tips! :)
Great advice! Thankyou for making this video x
i am a high school senior with no experience in the work field at all but i am involved with school clubs would that be a good thing to say? Do stores hire people that are 17 with no experience? btw you're answer for the scarf store was amazing i can see why you get hired all the time, you are a very good speaker
Very nice tips but background music is annoying.
Thanks. Your words made sense
How about if you already have a job but have a interview for a different company what should you tell that company about your current job?
I been trying to get since 16 and in 24 i want a job in a sneaker/clothing store because I love. fashion and what's hot
Such a great video. Good job!
what if I do not have any retail experience? what should my resume contain?
It helps to have a great cover letter when you don't have any retail experience.
+Natalie Vanessa Your resume don't need to contain much for a retailer. Your most relevant job exp, and a short description about yourself will be the key ones. But usually you call in to ask if there is any job. And they may just ask you for a walk-in interview.
+Natalie Vanessa If you have no work experience you usually just go in and ask for an application fill it out and give back to them and make sure you call or go in to the store every so often to check up on your application status If you want to do a resume just put down volunteer experiences you have had working with other people or activities that you have participated in that requires team work and your education. and Yes having a good cover letter is a huge plus as well.
i did that so many times. I did voluntary work in the past. I am still working in a food industry at the moment.
Burlington is ALWAYS hiring
i swear extra language helps alot
I have a question a lot of times in job interviews the interviewer asks personal questions like what do you do when you are not working and I feel like its a trick question to try and catch you. What would be a decent way to answer that ?
Samantha Montes when the interviewer asks personal questions you tell them I’m sorry but I can’t answer those questions . They do that just to see how alert you are they are not supposed to ask you anything like your age , if your married, your sexuality, bla bla bla... if they ask about weaknesses just tell them I tend to work too hard
Amazing tips! THANK YOU
"... You may not necessarily even like trends... but you like getting hired," LOL I'm screaming (because this is accurate, I like getting hired)!
What I want to know is, if you're currently working at another clothing store or just left one, how would you respond to a question like, "Why did you leave" or "Why do you want to leave (insert store name here)?"
I have an interview at Urban Outfitters on Thursday and I wondering what questions will they ask me. I'm like freaking out on what to wear and also what to say.
was *
+Victoria Saguin thank you :)
Did you get the job?
Sooo inspiring :) thanks you gave me some great advice you really know what your talking about . 😬👌
