Followed Jon’s guidance and completed this trip back in August. Was a great place, excellent experience, lots of good fish were caught and the camp sites were A+. Can’t thank this man enough for his help and inspiration.
You rock Rob, thanks buddy. Pleases me greatly to get traffic to this route. I often worry about that old growth between Boumage and Bark getting logged. Hopefully the canoe route will keep it safe.
The beer cans are from when the natives do their fall harvest,my grandparents used to own Ritchie falls,I've been going there for over 50yrs. The lake your on has some great fishing and little trout has an old trapper shack at the north end,my father and I were going to stay in it on a canoe trip up there but it was run down so we stayed in the tent

I watched this again last night. Perhaps my favourite. Probably because it reminds me my own trips on this route. Last two summers. Week longs without another soul to see. And great fishing. The cliff site on Big Trout and the site on Long Lake are as wonderful as you describe here, Jonathan.

Love that bit about the outdoor gym! I was a gym rat in my younger days but since hitting the 4-0, I make my backyard my gym...and it is far more satisfying!! Great video, again.
Hahah good call man...I kind of despise gyms in the sense that it's like discarding calories (and some machines USE energy!). Much better to put them to use in the backyard, the backcountry, or what have you :)

@@LostLakes Hey Jon, just put on the NFB documentary, Waterwalker with Bill Mason. I watched it after school as a teen and just loved it. You've probably seen it but thought I'd check. He mentioned about how hard it is to make a living paddling and how he denied a film producer to his videos and pictures as they wanted "Hollywood-ise" it. Very cool.

To enjoy the smell of pine, spruce or fir go to essential oils, just make sure they are pure. I have a bracelet made of beads and lava rocks. Just one drop of oil on a rock and am smelling like black spruce or fir pitch for a few hours, nothing better. I also have a pottery type pendant necklace thingy that I use from time to time. Sometimes I will load it up with oil and hang it where I sit to relax and watch you tube videos, helps when I can't get to the woods myself! Thanks for sharing your trip!

You should try having a pair of Croc shoes. They’re comfy and waterproof. Great for wearing around camp with clean and dry socks. They’re also great in the canoe but not for portaging

Thanks a lot John! I've carried bear spray for years and last season we got a personal locator beacon which is essentially a satellite SOS button. No texting, so we're still disconnected, but peace of mind knowing that help is available if the worst happens.

Appreciate that! :) Hahah that's awesome. I actually hardly use it, but it's quite effective. If I'm fishing deeper lakes and I commit to setting it up early on like I did on this trip, I'll often continue using it for that trip, but typically I don't. If I want to fish around 20' deep, I'll use crankbaits and for deeper than that I'll usually let a lipless crank fall to bottom and then rip-pause it back up. On this trip I only had bell sinkers, but be sure to get yourself a keel sinker if you're going to use the 3-way swivel rig. Or just use a dipsy diver.

When you snag in the backcountry, how do you (personally) deal with it? Paddle over and try to get a new angle on it? Some other method? I often struggle with snags in the shallows and was just curious as to how you approach the situation. Unreal pike btw, nicely done. Tight lines!

🙏🙏 Never have but it seems superior to the Ohuhu one I got off Amazon. Albeit much more expensive. On mine you have to remove your cookware in order to load fuel because there's no slot on the side.

I fish out of a 12 foot canoe (for bass) and would not want to tie into a huge Pike or Muskie. You seemed to handle it well.

Thanks Chris! There are some good established campsites on the route so you'd be fine with a tent, but the hammock would maximize your options
Love your videos: thanks for making them. We are planning to do this route in September, adding in an extension to the north to explore the Mississagi headwaters. How is the road between Ritchie Lake and Lac aux Sables? I have heard it was in bad shape. We have a non-4wd vehicle. The alternative would be to put in on Ritchie Lake I guess. Thanks again!
Thanks Daniel! It's not great but you'll be fine as long as you don't have some kind of ultra low profile racing car lol. Just go slowly beyond Ritchies so you don't slam into a pothole. You can drive around the bad ones.

i am wondering about the purifying of water. in my 15 ish years of solo trips in the woods and mountains i have never boiled or filtered water in Norway.
is it a big problem with parasites and bacteria over there?
i got sick 1 time and that was when i got water from a river in a agricultural area when it was heavy rain(i know it was stupid) and i got E.coli.

Thanks Sverre and good question. Some people say they always pull water straight from the lake (usually I hear they do this away from shorelines, into deeper water) and they've never gotten sick. But not many people do this and it's like playing russian roulette. There's always a risk of giardia here, not to mention e.coli and others. We don't have much in the way of mountains here in this part of Canada (province of Ontario), but I imagine that water would be very low risk
Hey man, would recommend this trip for a novice canoeist/camper (provided all of the essential equipment is there)?
Hey Julian, not really due to the not-always-straightforward travel, some rougher sections, and remoteness. I would want a decent amount of experience under my belt before doing this route. It's not brutal or advanced, but I wouldn't suggest it for a novice. More of an intermediate route

One book in particular that you'll enjoy given your location is Ontario's Lost Canoe Routes by Kevin Callan. Includes this route, Algoma Headwaters, Steel River, etc. Worth its weight and gold and also a really enjoyable and funny read.

Great call!! Just started doing that myself, along with some balsam fir essential oil :)
For real pine scent, you could scrape a bunch of the sap/gum off your tree of choice, then cut off pieces and put it in one of those things, I forget what they're called, with the dish of water and a tea candle heater. They make them for essential oils. I bet it would work super well, and it would literally be the smell of one of your trips.

What size fish do you consider to be an eater?
For pike, about 5-7lbs. Any smaller and the bones really cut into the amount of meat you get. Any larger, and it should be put back because it's an important spawning fish. For most other species, anywhere from 1-4lbs

Naw unfortunately when it's this much, I usually just tuck it away somewhere discreet in the woods. The intention there is to prevent other people from having to see it and to remove "permission" for other people to do it. When people see junk around, I think they're more likely to do it
Opinions of pacrafts?
They're pretty neat but not for me. I just don't trust inflatables, don't like the idea of having to deal with inflation/deflation, and I value the spaciousness and ruggedness of the canoe.

I hear you and appreciate that perspective. I assure you I ate it all over two meals including the egg sacs. Have to maximize your use of the fish if you're going to take its life.
