The Yian Kut-Ku was my favorite monster from the first gens, good 'tutorial' monster and overall a rather fun fight, and I'll never forget how hard the high rank one-eared Yian Garuga from the village quests kicked my ass in MHFU. Kinda sad they didn't add Kut-Ku in any 5th gen game, but I was also happy to see Yian Garuga in full HD in Iceborne. Good video as always, my man 😎
Yian garuga is one of my favorite monsters, he's not only cool looking but he's such a world apart compared to his clumsy cousin kut-ku. according to the Lore he is actually a different species and they lay eggs in a kut-ku nest kinda like a Cuckoo would in real life, making his kinder cousins raise the baby because it's aware it's too bat shit insane to be a proper parent itself. That also makes him interesting in the sense that physically he isn't actually that much different other than the poison tail. It's similar to humans, sure we're all similar but would you really want to fight the insane crack addict over mark from across the street ? hell no.
You are right i checked and it was in high rank. mh4u really did it dirty for yian kut ku, garuga and basarios, the only monsters that can be encountered in the everwood.
I'd like to think that non scarred Garuga is Garuga being new and all, while scarred Garuga survive couple of battles, and Deviant Garuga survived dozens of battles.
The order they're introduced doesn't determine which is the variant. A variant monster is one that was normal but got modified in some way over the course of its life. There's no way you could modify a scarred to get a base garuga, but you could scar a base garuga and get scarred, and that's why scarred is the variant, even if he was, in a weird way, introduced first.
The rock throw Deadeye gets is also a bit of a feint - players who fight his G-Rank version will think it's an opportunity for some free damage when he seems to struggle to get his beak out. But it ultimately serves as a one-way ticket back to camp via cart when you realize that he's just getting better leverage to lob those huge rocks.
Kinda weird how i liked Garuga from the first time i saw it (back in MHF2) but i started to really appreciate the monster when i played MHF1, in wich he was a big bad bird, he was clearly stronger than Raths for exemple wich was neat, seeing a lil bird being that strong was a nice addition, giving him the same lvl as Basarios was really bad in the 2nd gen low rank, at least the ones in HR and G rank did justice to the beast Iceborne did this boi justice imo
Garuga was always my favorite fight as a Longsword/Hammer main, he is the monster that tests if you are sure in maining your weapon. His GU interpretation though gave me a reflex on my first time like Zinogre with every failure I started finding his fight as "fun".
Freedom Unite Yian Garuga has one of the best ai in the game. Has one of the fastest adapting ai where it can go from a fireball to an instant reckless charge(a charge but falls down) even in lowrank it's nearly unavoidable especially as a hammer main.
I just wanted to add that in Stories and it’s successor, the model for Garuga is the scarred variant. I like to think they used it to show that it’s more fierce and powerful than the Kut Ku right out of the egg
I remember the first time I thought garuga (Freedom), it was a repel quest not slay. Which was a good challenge. I recently got iceborne on the PC (previously only played world on PS4) and can't wait to meet it again.
I think Scarred from Freedom went on to become Deadeye, since canonically we only repel it. And back in Freedom Garuga's were smaller than gen 2 and onward, which would explain why Deadeye is small.

@@HeavyWings Most returning monsters in Iceborne aside from Garuga, Alatreon, and Fatalis felt like worse fights to me. Most of them have specific problems that make each monster worse, such as giving Glavenus a neck hitzone. It will take way too long to mention my issues with each and every monster so i'll generalize: Monsters have been made similtanously faster and less aggressive, which means that they they spend less time threatening the player, meaning that fights are interrupted with several seconds of boredom multiple times throughout the fight since the monster isn't attacking me (Nargacuga is the most aggregious example of this, While Rajang is the biggest counterpoint, although not in a good way like old Rajang would have been). Additionally, a combination of hitzone and hotbox changes means that positioning for several monsters has been changed (Zinogre was originally designed so that hits needed to be precise. It's head is soft but its hard arms and chest are in the way while being in the most dangerous location. It's hindlegs are a bit easier to hit and safer while also being good hitzones but are inbetween its significantly harder front arms and its tail. Iceborne completely messed up this balance). I think that many of the monsters in the old games were very meticulously thought out, and Iceborne completely forgot what made those monsters good when it tried to adapt them. Interestingly, the returning monsters who were changed the most imo, namely Garuga, and the black dragons, feel like good fights since they don't fall into these problems anywhere near to the extent returning monsters did. TBH i don't mind monsters like stygian, raging brachy , and furious since they feel more well thought out in comparison while also being more differentiated from their base forms. To be clear, I think that Iceborne's returning monsters are overall worse even without including things like clutchclaw, which only makes my issues even worse.
@@HareHeadGFX ...well then. I don't really understand how Glavenus having a neck hitzone is a problem. Is being precise with Glavenus a problem when it was something you praised about Zinogre? You do slightly less damage on the head than the neck, it really isn't that big a deal. What are your thoughts on Zinogre in Rise?
@@handtomouth4690 The issue with glavenus's neck is that its completely unneccesary, and requires more precision than weapons realistically have. The distinction between the head and throat was sufficient before, so its not like it changes how the fight plays out by forcing more interesting positioning changes. It's only exists to be inconvenient while the player can't do anything about it, unlike Zinogre's head or hindlegs, which allow for significantly more dynamic fight since 1) The precision needed is realistically doable 2)The player has more control through taking advantage of trips, ko etc which encourages the player to create their own oppertunities. I massively prefer Rise Zinogre to world zinogre, although I can't compare him to his high rank version in older games as i'm too used to g rank. I do hope some of iceborne zinogre's moves come to rise Zinogre in master rank since his new moves were actually quite good
the only time garuga is less dangerous with pre battle injury is 1st gen, for some reason they are all scarred but later on they were given uninjured base form with injured variants. the most iconic moves are either the double head slam and the fireball into charge combo for me. i hope he keeps his beak dive from IB in the future, the tail forward flip is also nice but i won't care as much if he lost it for a game. i dislike the idea of having base monsters missing but variations or later similar monsters appearing, like how master rank in IB had veriatnts for jho an bazel but not the base monster for 2 fights each and, more importantly, seperate weapons/armor sets. it was just weird without those. IB not having the original silly garuga LBG was a crime lol
I honestly thought he was hard to fight when I start to fight him the first time in ice born but realize it wasn’t bad i just Trouble fighting elder dragons Beside one elder dragon 😂
Ah Yian-Garuga. The monster I found annoying ever since I joined the MH community back in MH4U. I found it annoying in every single game... Until MHIB. I don't know how to pinpoint it exactly, but man they made the fight much more fun and way, WAY less cheap.

I’m surprised by all the long term fans of Garuga. In the old games I HATED him. He was by far one of my least favorite monsters, but I think the revamp in world turned him into a pretty enjoyable fight in the same way that rise fixed Kushala.
I'm going to say it, anyone who says any version older than iceborne of yian garuga is their favorite has stockhold syndrome. That thing was straight up never fun to fight with the constant 0-framing and attacking directly out of recovery. One-Eyed deviant was at least better and actually enjoyable. But iceborne yian garuga is the only one that made me truly love fighting the damn thing. The new moves they gave it were absolutely radical!
Garuga was so overlooked in Iceborne. Genuinely one of the better designed monsters that retained a sense of old world technicality in its moveset. I dunno why they decided to remain faithful with monsters like this, while completely butchering the transition of some (Nargacuga). Being slapped in at the endgame with little reason to hunt it, and giving it a godawful variant really killed its reception.
Iceborne is the best monster hunter in all gen of MH The design is perfectly looks like real monster Unlike others like cartoon And the playstyle in iceborne is good too, real time clutch claw unlike MH Rise u can hang on air lol

fun fact garuga was classified as elder dragon in MH freedom 1
ITS BEST BOY
When will you be looking at barioth?
Yian Garuga to me is like what if the Rath species evolve into a crackhead chicken instead of take form an actual flying dragon.
Love the video 💙😁.
Yan Garuva? What a weird pick, can't wait for the next video!
Scarred garuga is like ridley lol.
I really like these 2 and I hope we awalys get konchu, kut kut and garuga in the games together rather then being separated, it's a nice little collection of beasts, on that note while I love iceborne garuga I personally wish we got a new monster instead just because for me it feels off to have him but not kut ku,
Also small side not i think garuga got screwed with turf wars as he only got ones with Zinogre and Rajang, they could have easily copied rathalos turf wars over to him as well as mabye make his cutscene the turf war against brute wyverns, but that's just me
Kut ku is a joke but hc blue kut ku from froniter is an actual menace
Yian Garuga was one of the few monsters who weren't made worse for Iceborne, so I really hope it returns in Sunbreak.
Interesting take, could you elaborate? Who do you feel was ruined?
@@HeavyWings TL;DR all of them except like 3.
Poor Hypnocatrice
I honestly thought he was hard to fight when I start to fight him the first time in ice born but realize it wasn’t bad i just Trouble fighting elder dragons Beside one elder dragon 😂
1:47 you say "Curiously some of Rathians moves" the monster is the offspring of a Rathian and a Kut-Ku mating, so it makes sense.
T A I L S
Do royal ludroth and barroth OwO
Wasent Yian Garuga in Monster Hunter 1 aswell?
No, introduced in the portable game Monster Hunter Freedom. Which is basically Monster Hunter G but on the PSP.
Keeping the video PG by not talking about how garuga came to be eh?
Shhhhh
Freedom and FU Garuga was alright but Gen 4 Garuga sans Deadeye was pure cancer to fight tho
Iceborne is the best monster hunter in all gen of MH
The design is perfectly looks like real monster
Unlike others like cartoon
And the playstyle in iceborne is good too, real time clutch claw unlike MH Rise u can hang on air lol
I really liked Iceborne Yian Garuga until I fought her normally. My first fight with it was a miniature crown iirc, so I thought that was the whole shtick and enjoyed the fight a lot. Then I fought it at its normal size and disliked the fight a lot more
That's interesting. What about the size changed the fight for you?
Meeting this dude on FU be like :
Me : Nah just another Yian kut ku 😒
Yian Garuga : 😏😏😏
Get carted.. 💀
