Peter Hitchens On 'Dangerous' E-Bikes, 'Hungry' NHS Doctors And Julian Assange

- The rise in popularity of e-bikes, or electric bicycles, has sparked a heated debate about their place on the roads and whether they should be treated as bicycles or motor vehicles. E-bikes, equipped with electric motors, are faster and heavier than traditional bicycles, leading to concerns about safety and the impact on existing cycling infrastructure.
Critics argue that e-bikes should be subject to stricter regulations, including licensing and number plates, to ensure the safety of riders and pedestrians. However, the cycling lobby, which has fought for years to prioritize cyclists on the roads, is hesitant to support any measures that could be seen as a threat to their own interests. This article delves into the controversy surrounding e-bikes and the need for proper regulation.
Mike Graham and Peter Hitchens also discuss how to make the best sandwiches, whether a junior doctor in the NHS is budgeting well and why Suella Braverman should let Julian Assange go.

Can not believe you have even asked the Question.

Assange is a Political Prisoner and it has far more to do with what he knows about the Bidens, than any Leaked Document.
The irony of having 20mph speed limits for cars when these bikes drive on the pavement at speeds in excess of this
Ebikes which you pedal have no assistance in power above 15.5mph its the law.
The speed limit applies to bikes too. And of course they are not allowed to do that on pavements, just as car drivers are not allowed to use mobiles while driving.
@@sgordon8123 sure, in practice both cars and bikes will stick to the rules
Legal e bikes are power limited to 15mph, after that they're just a heavy bike, though Hitchens is lying about weights.
@@mgmpw32and the breaking he is ignorant of the facts or deliberately misleading
PLEASE MORE ABOUT JULIAN ASSANGE .. THE MAN NEEDS TO BE FREE
pedal assisted bicycles are legal and considered the same as a normal bicycle, but Ebikes with a throttle by law, should be registered the same as a moped. so Mr Hitchens hasn't got a clue what he's on about.
What a load of rubbish regarding pedal assisted ebikes. These are restricted to 15 miles an hour, with a small 250 watt motor. No more dangerous than a normal bike with a person of some fitness.
Legal e-bikes require you to pedal and are great. Anything that doesn’t require you to pedal is an illegal electric motorbike and should be either taken off the road or licensed. I followed one the other day by a grown man wearing a baseball cap riding at 40mph. Any delivery rider on an electric bike and is not pedalling is breaking the law. My worry is that legal e-bikes will be lumped in with the illegal bikes.
The just eat type delivery lot torment Leeds city centre and are basically riding scooters not push bikes
Spot on, pedal assist E bikes are brilliant and can help with health and mental well being and for people that have neither the inclination or fitness to reach high levels of fitness
If the bike has a throttle and is of a certain age, then they can still be legal.
Correct, go for 50 k rides on my e-bike and usually very hilly I come back exhausted ,he is very ignorant on this matter
I agree. I've just bought one to enable me to exercise and just make cycling a little easier. I am not interested in speed. I'm nearly 70 so it's going to be a great thing for me.
I have an e bike, it's limited to 25Km/hr, it's much safer on the street because I can keep up with traffic, and trust me, on a 12mile commute to work I HAVE exercised, but I'm not half dead from exhaustion as I would be with a normal bike. The power required to charge it is absolutely trivial compared to all the e cars going about. And I didn't get a £3000 government grant to buy it, like Tesla owners were getting. I agree there are people abusing overpowered e bikes; go after them, don't penalise the majority.
spot on mate i have a front hub motor takes mere pennys to charge in comparison to all the other e crap. i mainly peddle more than the motor gets used and gives me the ability to not have to get off on big hills. The hire bikes are built to be tanks and the weight to help to not get stolen. all this money they want people to spend just to ride a bike is a joke the fact he thinks people who use them only live in bedsits and don't want to walk to the pub this guy is disconnected from reality.
Exactly. I think he is ranting about the wrong thing and confusing dodgy self propelled ride on bikes with proper eBikes like mine that require to be pedalled.
Didn't have a car licence till my 30s, cycled everywhere, commuting and touring. Ebike let me continue riding after a knee injury, I can go out with younger, fitter mates and keep up ( mostly). Weight for me plus bike around 80kg, some of the guys on regular bikes are more than that, not including the bike. As far as speed goes, legally the motor only works up to 15mph, above that you're doing the work, a fit road cyclist can easily average over 20mph on a run.
@@mufffinman4203 charging a battery is the same, even if the hub is at the front or back wheel...
@@Xtremedarkjoy i didn't say that you did but okay. i stated compared to other electric crap like scooters and cars ebikes that you peddle dont just consume so its a lot cheaper. example you buy a escooter and then get on it push once then let it do the rest you don't exercise or use you body to assist in moving so charging that every trip as on mine it last longer per charge as i dont just use the motor solely .
The biggest problem with E Bikes is theft problems, particularly with LIME Bikes , not only stolen but used for unscrupulous purposes.
LIME themselves seem not to be bothered by mass theft which puzzles me , unless of course this is an insurance scam.
I ride an E bike I ride it very responsibly. Its the abuse of E bikes thats the problem not the bike
Ha ha ha honestly guys, such an entertaining wonderfully humourous show.
Covering very important topics.
The shows a breath of fresh air, in an ever more toxic world.
Thank you very much.
E.bikes are limited to 15.5 mph - but like any other bike you can pedal them faster-and they do give you exercise because they only pedal assist. Bikes that go faster than that, or have throttles aren’t legal. The answer is for their to be Police doing their job and prosecuting riders with illegal bikes. If you want to slap number plates on e.bikes, then we should have them on all bikes so careful what you wish for.
If you reduce the wheel diameter in the computer to 16 inch for example the wheel will spin faster and you can squeeze 18.5 mph out of it.
@@KidMillions I never have it above setting 3 anyway. I can pedal at almost 20mph without the assist. It’s on the hills, in headwinds and when I’m generally tired when I need the assist.
@@nockianlifter661 I don't actually pedal that it requires any effort, I let the bike do all of the work. I get enough exercise otherwise.
@@KidMillions I have motorcycles and a car for that purpose.
E-bikes by law are limited to 15.5mph.
Speed Pedelec Bikes can go up to 28mph but are you need a licence and insurance and can only go on the road and not cycle paths
The problem with e-bikes is that people are hacking them to go faster than 15.5mph and like everything that’s wrong with the UK the police do not enforce the law
Well said lads. Let them get in the real world. Virtue signalling again. Buy a loaf for starters and try living on £22,000 a year.
i too feel clever when i reel off context-free buzzwords
“Can I get” I hate that too Peter
God me too! I swear the next time I hear someone say that in a shop I'm going to ask them - you mean you would like?!
I have an e-bike. I can brake as easily as a normal bike
The problem is the sort of e-bikes that they are talking about are the ones that shouldn't be on the road. I go over the limit of the bike but the motor cuts out and I have to pedal. If you are going over 25kmh and not pedalling then that is not a legal e-bike
Exactly. He has got himself confused and is ranting about the dodgy self propelled ones and not proper e-bikes.
I do a 10 mile commute on my e-bike. It's cheaper and cleaner than driving and there is no public transport option. There is no substitute for care and attention and good manners on the road though.
Just bought an E bike and it has changed my life. I don't ride on pavements, adhere to normal road rules as I did on my mountain bike. I get to and from my allotment which is an 11 mile round trip in quicker time and I still get exercise. I just save my knees on those very steep hills. Don't tar everyone with the same brush. I have nearly been run over by those very fast delivery people on e bikes in city centres too. To say real cyclists don't ride e bikes is frankly ridiculous.
What about old people flying around on tight footpaths on mobility scooters? Ive seen quite a few kids hit by them!
Let's all stay at home and remove all risk
Why was that guy brought on to talk about Junior Doctors strikes when by his own admission he's been a Doctor for 15 years meaning he's on the £70k+ Salary which is £5,833 before tax and not including his wifes salary yet he can't afford a sandwich?
I would imagine the mortgage on a half million house is quite steep, then there's the school fees... doctors have an almost pathological fear of educating their children with the unwashed.
There’s a huge difference between a EBike and an illegal bike with an electric motor
Electric motorcycles are electric motorcycles not e-bikes.
He hasn’t been on an e-bike because they do help a little with exercise if you want them to, you just don’t use full power.
I have an e-bike and I do twice the distance I would do on a regular bike because I have that little boost on the lowest assist and it keeps me going for longer. It also enables me to get up all the hills by me without any issues enabling me to go more varied routes. I can turn off the motor if I don't want to use it and still ride it on the flat about as well as a lighter bike
Exactly. He is confusing electric motor cycles with e-bikes and making a bit of an idiot of himself.
Mike is a hypocrite on this issue. He has guests on that say outlandish things, pro Ukraine, and he does not push back.
Some of what Peter Hitching says is true, they are young young idiots are in the minority and should have these bikes confiscated, sadly as a 81 year old living in the Yorkshire dale’s until recently competing in hilly sportive events usually in the excess of 80 miles I will have to consider an E- Bike so I can continue to ride with my pals, old Father Time has finally caught up with me,even Peter can’t stop old age.
My regards to Foggy, Cleggy and Simmonite 👍
petersh. Hitchen's view on e-bikes is commonly held and not entirely without merit, but he does not understand the full picture. They are a boon to keen cyclists when they get older, as you have pointed out. As a keen roadie, I pushed on until my late 80's at which point the local hills became too much, so I added a simple friction drive kit to my existing bike. All up weight 13.5kg, it works very well, and, as I have always done, I ride responsibly. They have their good sides too.
@@vincekerrigan8300 Thanks for your insight Vince, I’m member of cycling club a couple ride together, one on the E bike the other on the road bike, works well for them.
Hitchins and Graham, like most PEV complainers…Do not care about you needing some help to climb hills in rural areas…they are both insular, parochial London bubble e-transport haters.
It's foreigners delivering food to lazy idiots that is the problem. They are running people over all the time and the police do nothing - as that would be racist.
Point: He is talking about self propelled electric scooters/ride on. Not e-bikes. E-bikes are not self propelled. I wish mine was but it requires plenty of peddling to get it to work. I think he has completely confused himself and is ranting about the wrong thing.
Good to know the church has a stained glass window of a myocarditis-afflicted heart.
I live in France. I have an e-bike but it only works when you pedal. The type that motor on their own are illegal here.
Where is the voice for pedestrians who are forced to share pavements with cyclist's? Our safety doesn't seem to matter anymore.
We are a small road country
Leeds city centre is very dangerous for pedestrians especially in pedestrian precinct.E bikes have taken over . Delivery riders don't give a toss , Council don't give a toss ..

An ebike is the only way I can cycle because of my health. I am often overtaken by non electric bikes which can travel at much faster speeds because they have no restriction. What a fantastic voice to have in public discourse, we are lucky to have Peter around.
Sad that, on this show, he hardly gets to complete his comment without interruption.
The truth is e bikes are not needed only for cyclist coming into old age and need the assist so they can carry on riding with their friends or clubs. Also people with illness or disability. You have to pedal them they are assist only, they are not a motor bike which has a throttle control. You have to pedal them for the assist to kick in. The Cycling lobby has been powerful since 1878 and did a lot to get roads surfaced forming the Roads Improvement Association, long before cars. Cyclists morphed into motorists as cars caught on, the roots go back to cycling the car itself started life from a modified tricycle with a motor on by Carl Benz....himself a keen cyclist. I sometimes wonder just how much these Jurnos really know about roads and transport history and why we are where we are today. I respect Peter and he makes good points. Its the idiot irresponsible riders that make them dangerous just like the irresponsible motorists make roads dangerous. Most people are fine and law abiding.
By law it's pedal assisted. If people use derestricted bikes they should be prosecuted. Can't get someone to turn up to a home robbery so there's your answer.
No emissions from a pushbike? I fart several times on a reasonable bike ride although I don't know if I am any flatulent than normal. Sometimes when I am flying long haul I can't stop breaking wind, something that Mike Graham would no doubt be familiar with given the amount of guff he emits from both ends.
To be fair, your breath does pong too.
Peter's looking well. Been exercising? Peter has a motorcyle licence? Good lad. Good sense from his, as ever. Free Julian!
So did I. Never sent me a letter say things have changed. Wrong .!

He does mumble though.
GOOD POINTS. I met two old buggars on ebikes in an OFF LEASH DOG park. THe man was shaking like a leaf, I think parkinsons or some such and he looked terrified. I was too when I saw him barreling down on us without being able to turn the bars away from the dogs or me. It was a narrow escape. THEY are dangerous because the riders do not know their power and weight. Get them off pathways on put them on the road.

An old Lady was killed by one of these bike/scotter things on a pavement in Dublin ,
Which ones are you referring about? The legal or the illegal ones.
It’s dead simple why are the illegal ones allowed to be sold. I have a legal pedal assist e bike, it is limited to 15.5 mph, but you can be passed by the Lycra brigade when on a road because they go faster. I am a pensioner and I do more miles pedalling on my e bike than on the normal bike I used. The main reason I got it was for going up hills, these bikes that are tearing round at 30mph without pedalling are illegal.
Agree totally on the sandwich discussion, make your own ,found human hairs in many takeaways, 🥵

250 watts is not that powerful, tour de France cyclists can pump out 600 watts so these two guys have no idea what they are talking about.
Main stream reporting of the war in Ukraine is very biased. I now follow various You Tube channels that provide balance. Judging Freedom has a number of regular knowledgeable guests. So I did know about the civilians that died on the bridge. Sometimes the main stream inadvertently confirms the alternative narrative.
If they wanted it to be suggestive of the Golden Gate bridge, why did they leave the plinth in?
I have the impression from Peter’s face at 13:13 that he’s deeply heartbroken by this war on a fundamentally personal level . . . he might be the only media commentator / journalist who is . . .
Don't forget the village vicars who fly Ukrainian flags from their church steeples. They are evidently more than happy that young men are fed into the meat grinder so they can signal their virtue.
@@James-gf9jl - sort of unrelated but I was just watching Part 3 of Ed Pratt’s ‘Can I Follow a River from Source to Sea WITHOUT Leaving it?’ series; he’s going along the River Parrett and even passing through a dot-on-the-map village like Langport in Somerset he’s confronted with some lunatic on a mobility scooter trailing a rainbow ‘BORN THIS WAY’ flag behind them . . . @@FiveLiver Sounds like predictable luxury belief diatribe to me. Going to volunteer for front-line duty then? Or maybe donate half your salary to the war effort?
Why not object to mobility scooters too ? They're heavy and able to travel beyond walking pace. Peter Hitchens objection to ebikes doesn't take into account the many cyclists who because of health conditions can only continue to cycle with the help of epower, by the way ebikes have a breaking system that automatically cuts power to the motor even if the pedals are still turning.
HItchens doesn’t know what he’s talking about on E-Bikes
The idea behind e-bikes is to get people used them, get lot's of them in use and then road tax etc. It's a con. Instead of saying they should have these things we should be saying they are just as banned as ever.
When did it become impossible to live on a combined salary of£150K per year! When pensioners have to make do with a tenth of that if not less! Most of the E-bikes have legally restrictive motors of 250watts & max speed limits of 15 mph! Plus they have to be pedaled. I agree that all other E-bikes should be registered & have to pay some form of duty, also a test should be introduced!
I’d say they’re probably living beyond their means. Are you telling me they can’t live on £140,000 a year combined income. I think they need to get a grip on reality and re assess their budget. That’s absolutely ridiculous. They must spend extravagantly on things like an expensive car, the five bedroom house, multiple holidays, abroad etc etc. People need to stop feeling they’re entitled to all of this stuff. Live within your means people.
Ebikes are electric bicycles. Electric motorcycles are e-mopeds. They have an excellent centre of gravity. Hitchens is very ignorant. The flawed logic of extreme power generation needed is silly. We charge many more 5v phones and 19v laptops. The power needed to light that studio and the sound equipment they're using uses more power needs than an ebike. The speed limit of an ebike is 15.5mph. At the age of 54 I can maintain 22mph on a normal bike and can still use the cycle lanes and paths.

An E-bike will assist peddling up to 15.5mph, then the power assist cuts out and if you stop peddling at any point on the flat… you will come to a halt.
Try to also bare in mind that average speed of normal bicycle is between 20 and can very easily climb to 30 miles an hour for a fit road cyclist.

Ps. Hitchens, your brother was a truly incredible man!
@susser1 You are dead right, a pedal cycle will easily go faster on the flat than a legal electric bike. The electric bike needs a downhill stretch to go faster than the 15 mph otherwise you are pedalling at an unsustainable rate just to reach 20 if you are lucky.

I normally respect the views of both these gentlemen, however in this case like most parochial, insular London bubble ‘Personal Electric Vehicle’ (PEV) haters they are being incredibly ignorant and have clearly done zero research before speaking. There are quite a few young people, kids, riding badly, too fast around people and with scant regard for the law in London. These irresponsible few are making a bad impression for all e-bike riders and it unfair to pretend this is typical behaviour. Older, unfit and damaged people can not necessarily ride a normal push bike, especially up hills…which do exist outside London. The legal powered bikes are termed electrically assisted peddle cycles or eapc’s and limited to that 15.5 mph (which is slower than a normal cycle) …E-bikes are usually over powered (in law) and illegal on the road, but they are no more intrinsically dangerous than a moped or vespa scooter. You can see the likes of Graham and Hitchins simply don’t want anyone to enjoy the freedom PEVs can bring…in their view you either manage to cycle or you walk..or I guess stay home. Not that they would give up their cars I’m sure! Being near 60 myself, my ebike gave me the ability to enjoy countryside travel and do a little peddling for exercise…Like most riders I was not irresponsible and did not terrorise pedestrians. We SHOULD prosecute bad riders…NOT everyone with a powered two wheel transport. Plus I must say, the premise of our freedom includes the idea of letting people enjoy themselves unfettered as long as they are not harming others. YOU..MIKE GRAHAM are the last person who should be supporting the idea of authoritarian state clampdowns on recreation!!! ….Oh and, for the record the extra ten to fifteen kilos for an ebike making them more dangerous is fatuous and without merit, considering the rider weight can add far more mass….unless you want to see cycle riders over 100 Kg banned because their body mass can add to the impact!

E bikes in Canada are in many cases ungoverned and go incredibly quickly and are generally ridden by geriatric women with little to no motor skills on bike paths and sidewalks.... what could possibly go wrong??
The Problem is NOT the e-bikes themselves, it's the irresponsible people that are riding them! And there is a big difference between Electric Pedal Assist compared to what can amount to electric motorbikes - ebikes with no pedals and a throtle are not road legal unless they meet all the DVSA criteria, just like normal motorbikes.
Bloody cyclist cycling with enormous speed on footpaths, shared lanes, roads.. not a problem!?

E-riders are a curse.
For Mr Graham to ask why journalists would leave things out suggests that Mr Graham is a complete newcomer to the media: employed this morning rather than yesterday, and never watched or read a news item before. He should read 'Manufacturing Consent' to understand that journalists have always left things out, always for political reasons, the most egregious example being reporting on the depredations carried out by the Israelis in their brutal occupation.
Wales are not allowed meal deals. 😂😂
I have seen people doing power wheelies on them along my street.
E scooters: Milton bloody Keynes is full of 'em, most apparently ridden by young men who ought to be perfectly capable of walking or riding a real bike.
Last time I was in Amsterdam, petrol powered scooters and small motorbikes were using the bicycle lanes, which keeps the riders safe from being killed by cars on the road.
In Enfield, North London, they forced cycle lanes into the already thin roads, next to the pavement, so now when you get off the bus, the bus warns you about getting hit by cyclists as you cross the cycle lane to get to the pavement.
It's so ridiculous. One road works causes hours and hours of delays.
In Amsterdam there are many citizens, particularly from a somewhat older age, that don't dare to use the bike again because of the kamikazi riders on e-bikes. Also, these petrol powered scooters and small motorbikes are not allowed on the bike paths in Amsterdam, unless their speed is limited to 25 kmh.
@@BonusHole Nope, I used kmh, which is the standard in the Netherlands. In mph, this 25 kmh would be roughly 15.5 mph as a maximum speed. These small motorbikes and petrol powered scooters are limited to this speed and cannot go faster in Amsterdam/Netherlands (unless you fiddle with the engines, which is illegal in the Netherlands). Anything that goes faster than this, is not allowed on the bike paths. Interestingly enough, even these 'slower' scooters, must have an insurance, license plate, and the rider must have a drivers license for at least a scooter. Quite unlike the situation in the UK, which is like a free-for-all cowboy land compared to the Netherlands.
yuo have to ask who’s supplier are that provide the arms and munitions.
