  • Some people claim that crows are aggressive by nature. But is that true at all?

    The answer to your question is, birds never attack humans without the reason but if it happens, there must be a very good justification for it.
    Not many birds are able to join their forces, to defend and repel the intruder.
    That characteristics clearly shows the higher intelligence and ability to vocally communicate and organize according to the different circumstances, that may arise.
    Crows are smart, funny and lovely creatures!
    Nice video, by the way.👋☺

    Attacking a human would be life-threateningly dangerous for a crow (for what possible damage to the human?). And they certainly are aware of that. So it is obvious that a crow would need an extremely good reason for doing so. I consume a lot of crow news and I am aware of only one such report.
    So in 99,9...% of all cases, the crow does not try to attack a human but just to scare him off. Just like we would try first before we would decide to attack an animal (with the possible exception of mosquitos).

      crows do attack humans and cause light injuries like minor scratches/ it happens every year, reports are numerous. Obviously, it happens for a reason: people walking too close near a baby crow on the ground. People should start paying attention as to what surrounds them.

      @@HaukeLaging it's hard to say exactly. It all depends on a crow's character. Some are shy, and even in most extreme cases will never approach a human

      There are many attacks on humans where I live, for no reason. There is no actual valid reason for this, as no one bothers them or pays any attention to them. I saw a mother carrying a baby attacked by a murder of crows, her head was all bloody.

    There is a study from Japan showing that crows would communicate to each other about mean humans. So if you are mean to them, crows will be mean to you. Other than that, it is simply common interspecies misunderstanding. We now know better and this should be more widely spread among humans. I have always liked corvids and I'm optimistic about human-bird relations. Old negative superstitions seem to disappear more and more.

      You are so right, Napoléon. These supersticions are a big problem and let to the almost extinction of ravens in middle Europe in the last century. It's really time to set some records straight.

    • @napoleonfeanor
      @napoleonfeanor 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Krari the Crow In the last century, superstition was the main reason during the dirst half due to the false belief that they would kill young lambs and calves, which is not true as ravens usually just eat dead animals (where they often are the first larger animals to arrive) and sometimes kill young lambs that already are near death and would often already wait if they think an animal would soon die. Protection and importing new ravens started soon after the war. During the second half of the century, false believes became less and less widespread. Destruction of habitat has played a big role in slowing down tue rocovery. Especially the huge usage of pesticides killed the food sources of many birds. Fewer animals lived in those fields so there were also fewer dead animals for them to eat plus other foods.Ravens are slowly recovering but it will take more time. In regards of the common raven in Europe (Kolkrabe), I am quite optimistic. They are intelligent, adaptable animals and also very charismatic. I think an important long term method is to teach children and teenagers to appreciate local/regional fauna. In case of ravens, showing some videos about their intelligence and complex behavior can help. If you look at youtube, we can already see that this is creating an interest in them among people. Videos like yours also help. People need to have positive appreciation of nature but that cannot be forced.

    You will see corvid like birds attack not just humans but every kind of possibly threatening animal this way if they feel the other animal is threatening them, their breeding place or their food source. Leaving usually helps but you will find overly aggressive individuals in most species capable of aggression.

    Sticking up for our intelligent winged friends :)
    Crows used to be revered. They were considered psychopomps, but that was before, I believe, the dark ages, when the shift to oppressive Christianity combined with cultural decline, war and disease, made crows villains. I believe there's several videos about it on YT, "Ravens And Crows In Mythology" is one example I recommend.
    I find it interesting that our departure from the much more earthly paganism put us at odds with the natural order, making a carrion eating bird go from a spirit guide to a symbol of evil. Considering how much we have in common with them, you could argue that by turning our backs on the crow, we turn our backs on ourselves.

    • @napoleonfeanor
      @napoleonfeanor 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ravens and crows did not have the same status and it is also not Christianity to blame in general. Superstitious poor farmers were just afraid of crow murders (yes, it is the correct term in English for what we would call ein Schwarm Krähen in German).
      Most is simply a common misunderstanding between species as people didn't know about crows' actual behavior then.

    • @kestrelsandcrows6871
      @kestrelsandcrows6871 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you very much for this highly reflected comment.
      I think it is true that we can learn about ourselves, when we look at the attributes that have been given to crows at different times in history.
      We must not forget that humans are doing terrible things to other humans and people who cannot bear their own guilt look for someone to blame.
      But I ask myself how much do we really have in common with them.
      Do we know that much about crows?
      For example: We usually cannot identify individual crows in the wild. So how could we ever understand what's going on in a big crow meeting?
      I have to say that I just don't understand what's going on. They're cawing in many different ways, they're doing crazy things in the air, and I can really enjoy it even though I have no idea what's going on.

    • @KrariTheCrow
      @KrariTheCrow  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I agree it is mostly impossible to understand what is going on in the air with crows. But in the last years I had the chance to spend many hours with one crow pair and their offspring. From what I can see crows are very emotional beings. Kräri for example gets visibly frustrated or angry, he has a close bond with his partner Kruu. He cares lovingly for his children but also gets angry at them when they keep asking for food even though they can already eat by themselves. I can really see Kräri think when he is confronted with a problem. Sometimes he takes a break and walks away until he suddenly seems to have an idea, comes back and solves the problem. I see many similarities. It is surprising and sometimes hard to believe.

    • @kestrelsandcrows6871
      @kestrelsandcrows6871 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@KrariTheCrow I didn't want to deny similarities and I keep learning about similarities. That's why I watch so many videos of crows and other birds.
      I just wonder, how much is there, that we simply don't know. How can we ever know, how complex the crow society really is.
      Sometimes I'm frustrated because crows recognize me, but I can't identify individual crows. (Except for the few crows who visit me for food.)

    • @KrariTheCrow
      @KrariTheCrow  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I know what you mean and I had the exact same thought. As frustrating as it is, it is also fascinating and a reason to spend even more time with them with an open mind.
