It was probably the mating surface on the crank itself where the seal rides or it could be a defective crank where that peice is out of round I would check it with a Mic
Had similar thought. Oil pressure spike in that area. I don’t know anything about the Dodge engines and their rear main drain back. I saw latest PFI vid and thought I would check comments for this one for similar comments.
I was watching the tear down video. Telling the guys to look at the rear main cap and drain show it on the screen. When I didn’t see it on the video. I posted on comments ASAP. I have seen it a few times working at cadillac North Star engine when too much rtv is used on the case half and oil pan. And it would blow out with in an hour of running the engine
Oil pressure build up behind the rear main seal. Check for blockage of the drain passage to oil pan behind seal on main cap. Oil has to have a way back to oil pan. Silicone or Jb weld can block it.
I like the stuff with Jamie’s car. And Brent helping him out. Thought Jamie done a great job during race week with the content. And finishing the race. That took some real Grit.
Not great to see that a $10 seal can make you question the whole week. But love the tears from Jamie. The capture of the raw emotion and the commitment to finish then the relief. Well done Jamie. Don't change the name, it is a reminder that anything can go wrong if you let your guard down. You had to finish this week to now what it takes to win... you now have 11 months of testing for the next one.... Even the well prepared Leroy and Ruby had issues. Again well done...
That was a great ending, Brent. Good job! The shot of Jamie at the end was a nice touch, as well as the Bat-mobile footage with fist pumps. LOL! I would definitely try another brand rear seal, be sure you touch up the sealing surface on the crank with some emery cloth. Think of the hatch marks in the cylinders holding oil, the same for seals. Get rid of the shiny surface and they won't leak. Keep the videos flowing! Happy Fourth!!. .
Hey guys, just to add to Brents idea about the breather issues. I'm a VW guy. I built the first twin G60 2.0 car in the world 16 years ago. I blew out 4 rear mains in about 300miles. I had multiple top breathers. I ended up drilling an tapping a 10AN in the lower side of the block. Solved the rear main issues. Keep up the great work guys! You have turned my passion back to life!!
Brent must be so tired from flying to Florida for the rivals then does RMRW. Then right back to work. I love his positive attitude and how he is always coaching his crew. You guys rock Happy 4th to all of you.... Be safe and have fun...
When you wake up at 4am (in Australia) and could go back to sleep, but see a PFI video just got uploaded so you get up and make a coffee and watch it instead.
-Did you lube the seal before you installed it? I use lubriplate. -Sometimes they offer an upgraded seal. Plus an installation sleeve, like a thin funnel to make sure the seal went in without folding under or getting scraped accidentally. -You can lightly centerpunch around in the seal bore so it retains tighter. -Check the converter balance, it can make the crankshaft wobble at the back some and maybe affect the seal. -You can even centerpunch around the outside seal flange area to keep it from pushing out. (Just trying to help)
I know iam not the only one that thinks that motor was a real trooper for hanging in there that just shows PFI knows there shit it last 6 plus years and all of race week I have a hole new look at neons grate job guys and congrats on Jamie on the win love you guys and happy 4th to all of u
I think oil pressure is pushing out the rear main seal, check to make sure you have good drain from the journal on that end. Not a mechanoc but just a guess. Happy 4th!
I just have a feeling that the converter is somehow causing the rear main problem. Pushing / pulling against the crank, out of balance. But you would think you would feel it and see it on the thrust bearings. Could there be a plugged oil passage causing high pressure at the crank/seal area, I don't know how the oil is routed in that engine but it looks like it's not crankcase pressure so it would have to be oil pressure. Hope you find the problem so you know it's fixed.
My guess is that the strap kit is the issue. The main seal drain port is behind the strap ref 15:10 in video. Probably needs a little more clearance in that area. It could be causing the oil draining out of the rear bearing to be pushed back into the seals drain port. It needs the strap to have a groove cut from the port to the lower edge of the strap. To drain the oil into the pan instead of going into the area the bearing drains into.
Hey folks, I wanted to throw an idea out there. Is it possible the oil pressure coming out the rear main bearing could be overwhelming the rear main seal? May need more area for the oil to drain away from the seal. Jamie, you are a trooper for keeping that thing together.
Lockup converter would be a good solution. Prolonged highway miles, there’s probably a ton of heat in the bellhousing, could be heating and swelling the seal until it spins itself out?
I don't necessarily think it'd be the heat in the bell housing area causing that. Hot fluid means hot shafts and seals. I'd be leaning more towards that than the bell housing.
Yeah, lock up converter would be good for the highway miles. Brent;s idea of a block breather is good, some engines have one OEM. Maybe an engine oil temp guage too.
Tezzr Terry I agree. Think in lockup it’ll keep engine oil temps down too and keep case pressure down. If I’m not mistaken that’s a 3 speed with a steep converter, riding probably 3200 to do 55 for hours on end, probably partially in boost there too. No doubt they’ll figure it out though, they’re a top notch operation from what I’ve seen. I’m sure they’re way ahead of us here In the comments
Don't usually comment on much on TH-cam but Well done Jamie on last week! Absolute trooper fighting through all those issues (with the rest of you by his side)! That ending is pretty moving! Just like it was when it was initially released. Fantastic work again by all, been following a long time now and always interesting to see where things go with you bunch :)
You guys are absolutely killing it with car guy content. Seeing Jamie go through his trials and tribulations at RMRW shows just how down to earth you guys are. "Or you could make enough power to turn it" that was a total scumbag comment that happens between good friends.
Honestly that motor took 6 years of beating pretty well by the looks, pretty neat to hear all yall did to improve on the design in the bottom end. Damn 4th of July outro got me oozing freedom! Honestly nothing more American than Brent doing what he loves, whether it be blowing up a motor without a steering box, helping anyone he could on race week and still comes back and supports Bandimere to keep it all rolling.
As a proud srt4 owner and proud American this whole race week and the amazing end to it all brought a tear to this ol mans eye..the dyno vid where this car pulled over 700hp is the reason i went out and purchased mine that was built by Brutal Speed and Tuning and even though most people hate these cars i love mine as a daily that can still blast most cars on the street ( from a roll lol)..keep up the great work guys !!!!!love from NC guys👍⚡⚡⚡
Brent, thank you for just being an awesome American! All you Colorado boyz are great. And Shawn, we all see the amazing hard work you do every day. Thank all of you guys and gals for being who you are, especially during these tough times.
The Curse engine looks surprisingly good so far all things considered. Address the Rear main seal refresh the engine and trans issues. Jamie and the Curse will rock again. The amount of interest in this rear main issue is amazing with every ones input I'm sure the issues will be solved. Nice to have Jamie outside the Honda box. after all " It's Just A NEON "
Loved the rocky mountain race week content, glad to see that Jamie's engine wasn't too hurt, keep up the good work and I look forward to your continuing adventures.
Is it possible that you have a chunk of metal blocking oil pressure from draining out of that main seal, and that is causing it to blow out? Probably all aggravated from the excessive heat on the torque converter.
I saw a cracked piston skirt do this under high boost condition. Blew the rear seal right out . Have the pistons magnafluxed. Replace them yes. But check for cracks of any kind that you can't see. Also have the converter checked for clearance issues. Great job guys. Go have a little fun. Till next ride!
Three weeks three wins burnout contest rocky mountain race week with Garrett and Jamie with rookie of the year it's been a awesome mouth of content thanks Brent keep on keeping on LET'S GO 💯✌✌
The neon loves to put all its oil in the head and not let any drainback. Even at the end of 1 pass it will have 3.5qts in the head and 1 or less in the pan. It starves the oil inlet and you spin a rod bearing. You have to bore the 3 oil drains to the same size as the gasket, then chamfer the tops so it can roll easier instead of the 90*, unbroken milled end. You also need to restrict the oil to the head a ton. I used to use the mopar oil restrictor back in the day, but they are few and far between nowadays. You can tap the oil feed to the head in the block, put a plug in it, and drill the center of the plug to size your restrictions. You can oversize the return feed behind the rear main seal so it can drain easier back into the block. Other oiling mods include sticking an ishihara johnson crank scraper in, gasket matching and polishing all the oil galleys, and chamfering the crank. Source, me. I raced neons for 18 years in autocross and road course. I'm drakito on neons.org and owner of little dragon racing.
One thing I love about car people is seeing there love for certain cars giving them the motivation and dedication to keep moving forward. Respect for the srt4. It’s a car I’ve always loved. Keep moving forward guys.
Hey Jamie, Thanks for all the Rad content during race week, you are a machine. I remember you saying during one of the road driving portions of the event you said the trans temps were fine but you needed to sort out the coolant heating issue. I know you have it set up for Drag racing and that would be the reason for the size of the radiator. I build and race circuit (road racing) cars and a radiator that size would not cut it. I know you probably know that but I thought I would just throw it out there. I normally go through a catalog and find the biggest radiator I can find but with a thin x section (thickness). That way there is more room for intercoolers etc. I also try and use one that is a good size but one that is easily accessible from a parts store or a dealership. You and Brent and the Guys are killing it. Let's Go 🤘🤘🤘 Let

Any possibility that the oil return from rear seal area back to pan got clogged with silicone or JB weld when assembling back in the car twice? I've done it on accident a few times myself.
Not going to lie very interesting tear down love seeing the team solving problems, great job guys keep up the great work. Happy 4th of July guys stay safe
had a couple of srt4 neons myself..... i give you credit for sticking with it over and over... i didn't have it in me to continue so i bailed on them. keep it up i love the video!
I am surprised and thoroughly impressed that Jamie is working on the car already. I figured he'd park that thing for a year or 2 after RMRW. Way to persevere!
Are you guys using a miller tool co. Rear main seal installation tool? Makes a huge difference on seal instalation. Keeps the seal edge from folding over. I put in many at the dealer. The ending was Spectacular
You guys are awesome. Jamie is a hell of a man, a great video with a awesome ending. Thank you for all you guys do. Maybe one day I can find my motivation again and get something together. Stay awesome

Happy 4th of July to all the PFI/ Boosted Boiz team keep up the good work. All of you guys are truly inspiring, love the positive vibes. Congratulations again to Jamie making it through RMRW what an epic ride he had hopefully next year maybe he can come back for the win. 🤙🤙
Great job this week Jamie. Blown away by your perseverance. Side note as a twice over former MKIV owner I'm really disappointed to see a good exit on a Supra.

I have seen a rear main blow out because of oil pressure backing up at the rear main bearing drain being plugged
