I love the sound of Joan Greenwood's voice.

Great to see another entry into this series. Great that you enjoyed this one. Your enthusiasm has inspired me to revisit this one as soon as possible. Your series of these films has already added to my favourite films watched in 2024 (which might feature in my end-of-year video 😉). Thanks 🙏.

One of my top 10 movies I would take to a desert island. I love that the humour is all in the understatement "alas I was too late" dialogue. I always felt that as Louis' father was Italian there is something of a vendetta against those who wronged his mother regardless of any personal feelings he may build for them. Also a fan of other Robert Hamer movies Dead of Night (more spooky than horror but the first film to give me chills) and School for Scoundrels ( a great comedy based on the Stephen Potter books). Good job with the tricky task of saying why you recommend a film without spoiling it.

Thanks for the recommendations! Yeah, there's so much resentment there and his Italian heritage is surely a significant part of that, even if it isn't verbalised as such.

The word you were looking for was probably "mausoleum". Could be "crypts" or "tomb", but mausoleum is more likely.
It's not a broad comedy, but it's dry and dark and absolutely brilliant. There are lots of subtle little moments that reward you on rewatching. By the way, Peter Sellers was inspired to play multiple roles in Dr. Strangelove *because* of Kind Hearts and Coronets. And of course, Peter Sellers appeared with Alec Guinness in The Ladykillers.
You might look up another Ealing comedy that starred Alec Guinness: The Man In the White Suit. It's wonderful!

I'll definitely be looking into more Ealing comedies, that's for sure!

Happy to see the return of the series, Luke! I loved this film when I watched some years back. In general I love this kind of black comedies and also I am a huge fan of british style of humour so this is right up my alley, but apart from that, this is definetely one of the best exemples of this genre.
And I have to say that I think british cinema in general has always been a little underrated. I think there are tons of gems in several decades and subgenres, and yet I rarely hear someone giving praise to it. Anyway, nice review and nice impression of Terence Davies ahahah Speaking of british cinema I've never seen one of his movies, and I want to, but I heard the guy speak in some videos (he sadly passed away last year), and your impression was spot on! Ahahah maybe he wasn't a great commentary guy, but his ballot for the 2022 sight and sound list and relative explanations were fantastic! He had to be a nice guy. I don't know if some of his movies are on the list, but probably yes.

Haha, I certainly enjoyed his passion, I just don't know if it would sustain an enjoyable hour and forty minutes straight for me. It's nice that some are still enthusiastic about this series, I've been working hard to get it all back on track lately, still trying.

    Who is this bloke?
He doesn't know anything about this film!

If he doesn't know anything about the Ealing Comedies and seems to have only had the film running in background while he did something else, and can't remember details, why is he making a " review"? This is a great classic film that deserves better.

@@RazorwireReviews Well for one thing I must have seen this film a dozen times over the years so unlike you, the bloke supposedly reviewing it, I know its what's known as a "black comedy"!

@stephenogden5470 I literally say "it's a very dark, black comedy" in this video. You don't know anything about the video you're so affronted by, you must have had it running in the background while you were doing something else and can't remember details...

@@RazorwireReviews Maybe he should ask that "Henry James" guy to fill him in on the deets. I'm sure he's a genuine human with real thoughts and everything and totally not a sock puppet account the first guy uses to talk to himself.
