Definitely my top Blu-ray release this year ( Big silent movie fan ) Already had this release from Flicker Alley but this was worth a double dip for the different commentary tracks. Pre-ordered Flicker Alleys 1928 set due at end of October but will be double dipping again. Early Powell from BFI is also a great release.👌
I love Laurel and Hardy. I have the US release which has great extra features but not some of the interviews that you mentioned. Thanks for your thoughts on the Eureka release, will need to pickup at some point.
As a kid, the mornings during the Summer holidays were stuffed with L&H movies (along with anything else the BBC could get their hands on that was cheap) and it helped secure their legacy with a newer generation. The change in how media is accessed now could go either way for said legacy. Flicker Alley release the discs in the US - different commentaries and booklet (I think) - and they have confirmed a release of vol 2 for 29th October. There was an 11 month gap between the FA's release and Eureka's. So perhaps August/September next year for vol 2 here. And then we need a vol 3 to cover 1929 - which will possibly be slightly different as it's light on silent movies (7) and we see their first talkies (6)
From what I've read, Serge Bromberg will not be working on their sound films, so a (at least a complete) 1929 set may not end up happening, unfortunately. As spine number 300 of Masters of Cinema is due out in November and the 1928 volume of L&H will almost definitely be spine number 295, I'd say we're more likely to get that earlier in 2025.
Love your joy of Laurel and Hardy. Looking forward a full review in the future. Watching from NY.
Cheers!
I haven’t watched it yet. But I wanted to say thank you for this thumbnail. Hahaha it made me smile.
