- Last month, we pitted 2 road cyclists against Si on a Time Trial bike in a race to see who was faster. It's safe to say, Si on his TT bike smashed Conor and James - so we decided a rematch was in order. With the help of our new GCN Tech presenter Alex, Si got back on his aero bars to take on 3 ex pro road racers to see if he could defend his crown!

Take it to the track. Si on an aero track bike vs. 4 road riders team pursuit style. I think the easier swaps would level it up considerably. The data would also be much easier to compile.

I used to work at a cyclist cafe here in RADELAIDE there was one group of fellas training for Hawaii ironman all firemen and local swat team cops all riding $10 k timetrial bikes who used to just smoke every other squad up and down the coast 4 morning a week 50 kph all day

What we want to know now is whether they could hold his wheel for this course, if they all set off together.
I think that's pretty much guaranteed. They're not going to fall off the back at steady state, if he's pushing 350w and riding at a generous 28 mph they can sit on his wheel at maybe 250W without trouble. It's just that they can only do so many cycles of holding 250W on each other's wheels and then jump on the front and push 450W for 60 seconds to keep their group at the same 28 mph. *Maybe* he would be able to make a gap with a surprise sprint, but I doubt it.
we need a "meet the presenter" for Alex now. :-)

Love Oli‘s advice. When I see other cyclists on a climb I go max effort for 3 minutes to overtake them and then hide in the bushes with my cramping legs. Totally worth it
Then on the next climb pass them again and inform them they are now a lap down.

His TT fit/position looks solid.
His shoulders and forearms could be higher. Get the head a bit lower and chin forward. Shrug the shoulders towards his ears.

I'd love to know what the average power of the each of the others and what sort of numbers they were pushing on the front. It'd really tell the story of how much difference the TT bike makes.
Same. They usually have a bit more analysis, or at least speculation to offer. Fun video, but disappointing in that respect.
@@TheDionysiac Pretty sure that is because for the both of the videos they were expecting Si to lose. In fact Si was never supposed to do it in the first place, they were going to get someone from GTN to do the TT section because they thought the two up road bikes would be far closer, or win, in the first place.
@@Alex-to8es But wasn't that just in the case of the first video? You'd think that after such a surprising result the first time that they'd try to get some numbers out of it in part 2. They even mentioned that Si had a power meter this time, so we know at least that the data was there.
Anyway not trying to nitpick, just kind of surprised. Maybe they're saving it for a GCN "does science" vid.
Agreed. The lack of power data in the first video was a major gaff, and now they only give us Si’s power data?
I think they’re avoiding power on purpose- probably a lot of cyclists are burned out on constant power analysis conversations. I think you can assume a 30 - 50 watt benifit from tt position - so you can assume the chain gang is probably doing 400 watt pulls to keep same pace as cy at 350 w. Not a negligible amount.
Si actually went 7 seconds faster than his first effort, not 1 second. Quite significant! The results are:
2 vs 1
Si 12:55
CoNk (Conor and Hank) 13:40 seconds
3 vs 1
Si 12:48
AlCoNk 13:16
If he had wind blowing from back all the time it might be even faster. Is it means more effort...? Not exactly.

To be fair, he only won because of Oli's pro TT advice: "Go full power the first 30 seconds and then just hold on"

Ollie was trying to get Simon to gas out in the first minute 😆
That's pretty much what Merckx did for the hour record. Start off at a pace to beat the 5 km, 10km, and 20 km records and then finish out the hour.
That's how MTB races are done. He knows that Simon is an ex mountain biker, so he played on his MTB strength. 4D chess master.
Ollie was obviously giving him bad advice on purpose since Si took the KOM from him last time.
If you can talk while riding, you're not pushing hard enough.
I guess that's off their B-role not the actual ride!
I was noticing that. Gums flapping are not aero. At least 4 watts at 35 kph!
ArhPos Not how pacing works, you'll only not be able to talk when you're deep in the red or nearing the end of a race
Unless you're sprinting if you can't talk while riding then you really need to work on your pacing as well as breathing technique.

Put Si in the gang and have Mark Threlfall ride the TT bike. GCN v GTN rematch.
Think that was the original plan with the first video, but after the surprising victory by Si they scrapped that plan. GCN has a much larger audience after all.

Wonder if Conor, James and Alex could go quicker if they planned for one to finish i.e. they didn't rotate, but had Conor go full gas for 4-5mins then dropped off (since Conor has a CDA of a HGV). Once Conor peels off, Alex goes full gas whilst James holds the wheel for 4-5mins and then Alex drops off. Leaving James to go the last 3 mins alone. Would this be quicker? Think it deserves another effort guys. Matt
Si could probably have gone faster with a deeper section rear wheel. His rims were almost the same as the road bikes.
Or a disc wheel.
Yeah, plus a more aero fit of the bike. His head was sticking up quite a bit.

Really interesting though and I think lots of applications exist in this regard such as super lightweight bike v aero up hill in windy environments.

Si averaged 46,6 km/h
3 roadies 44,2km/h
2 roadies 43,4 km/h
if naively assuming adding 1 more roadie would each time increase their avg speed with 0,8km/h they would need 6 roadies to be just as quick as Si
Gotta be logarithmical, sorry. So only marginal gains for each rider added after 3. Your linear speed growth model would mean a peloton of 50 riders going at 81.8 km/h. On the adder hand, calculating the avg speed as a*ln(b*riders) you'd need 10 riders to match Si. Maybe try that, GCN?
I will see how Olie is trying to get back his KOM on this segment.

Conor, James & Alex looked like a well tuned machine, made out of rocks! I think of the guys put in some time to ride as a team I think the time would be closer. But I like how Is looks like Judge Dredd in that helmet.

Also I’d love to see how much a back pack vs no back pack weighing about 10kg would make in a short speed test as I commute regularly and wonder how much I’m loosing out by cycling with a back pack vs guys passing me on Sunday cycles with nothing

Ive done team timetrials and it is not personal but guys like James are a HUGE problem. You dont max like an idiot at the front you do smooth transitions keep the pace steady at each turnover and the game tight. If you are stronger you just take longer terns while te rest switch behind you. The idiot at the front jumping thinking he is helping is actually not at all. (s)He makes you exert yourself so much to keep the wheel your gonna blow out. Conor actually said this in part one btw guess you can yell who the real Pro is huh?
You should try and get Team Sky to come down and count it as a training ride, then you could do a segment on GCN Race Pass with them after

This is not true. Look at the peleton. They do TT's at around 54 kph. And now compare to a sprint leadout which is around 60 kph. With all riders working together, they could do that speed for hours.
