I was so looking forward to this. I loved travelling this route many times to Zhangye. Especially the sweeping bends West of Jinchang, watching our own train snake around each bend, then looking at the other trains higher or lower than us, as climb up higher. Although you did not highlight the sections is the Great Wall the rail line passes and runs alongside between Shandan and Zhangye. Walls and towers being of mudbrick construction, it is very different to what many people expect, used to the stone walls nearer Beijing. While they crumble into the dust.

A very nice and relaxing video Doc. The captions are interesting and stay on the screen long enough for me to read. I thought the video was a good length as I really like the long format videos. The longer the better for me. 😂 I loved seeing your Podstakanik, from your travels in Ukraine and how you always manage to get free hot water from the train’s titan. However, for me, a real highlight of your videos is your smiley sleeper night light that’s always changing colours. As almost all of this video was filmed in daylight, Smiley, (my nickname for him) was nowhere to be seen. 😢 Awwwww, maybe next time when you film overnight. 😅🎉

Excellent video and an education!! Small technical question, I mostly watch on a 3:2 aspect screen (e.g. iPad, Microsoft Surface) and ask if your captions could perhaps be sized to be fully visible when using a 'full screen 'TH-cam browser extension such as 'Zoom To Fill'?

some empty soft sleeper beds are sold 1-2 days before travel; thats when i snatched mine; usually, it is almost impossible to buy a soft sleeper bed in advance on those trains to xinjiang province

@@doc7austin The train line to Lhasa is very special. Climbs to above 5000m and the diesel engines are specially equipped to burn fuel in the thin atmosphere, and the rail cars have oxygen ports for masks in every room as well as for whole car. At higher elevations, the line is on permafrost which posed a lot of challenges to build.

In a previous video in this series, it was interesting to hear people in sleeping car laugh. It is rare that one hears laughter in Asia.
how did passengers treat you as westerner? leave you alone (perhaps affraid of police) or curiosity/interest in you?
had to lookup Xinjiang province and now understand your reluctance. But if you took a train through to Urumqui and then connected to one to Kazakhstan would you have any troubles?
How did they progressively make it harder and harder for you to film in the train?
Is there any tourism there or do Chinese only travel for work or to eet with family?
Hey, I have now seen enough of your videos that when you had brief clip from a "hard sleeper", I immediatly thought "platzkartny" 🙂

well, unfortunately the china-kazakhstan passenger rail link was cut at the onset of the pandemic in 2020; I hope it comes back; xinjiang province is a politically very sensitive area; foreigners filming critical infrastructure brings problems with it

@@doc7austin True, but you must not be a Polyanna in these travels. Not if you feel it is your duty to inform. There is a tragedy happening in this area. I am not saying there is not a complex story here, but as in Gaza, Nagorno-Karabakh, Tibet and West Papua, it is important people are aware. (The US is no better in this department of course; ask the indigenous Indians.) This is an important part of the area's identity, like its history. For people who face potential ethnic cleansing or genocide or simply annihilation through transmigration - of which these rail routes you are enjoying play a role - you must understand what it means to be continually called Chinese and the area you identify with as only North West China.

@@doc7austin I suspect the problems there relate to Tibetan and Uighur minorities, although that area is now overwhelmingly Han Chinese. I would like to know the reasons for extensive security fencing and restrictions on filming. Perhaps it is linked to problems with assimiliation policies in the neighbouring provinces? It would be interesting, and perhaps quite important, to know.

      “回”是“再次”的意思。“回锅肉”,是先将猪肉用水煮成半熟,再将猪肉切成片,然后再“回锅”与辣椒炒在一起。
      由于在炒的时候猪肉已经半熟,所以最后炒的时候只需要非常短的时间。
      由于在炒的时候用时极短,所以可能是快餐里最常见的一道菜。
