One of my favorite scenes is when Sam carries Frodo. They have gone through so much, and Sam has been pushed away. They started in the Shire, and their journey took them all the way there. Everything seemed hopeless. When Frodo has no strength left, Sam rises up and carries him for the Shire and all of Middle Earth. There are many scenes I love; this is just one of my favorites.

People who say 'it had too may endings' are morons who essentially process the film as 'right, the battles over- why hasn't it finished?'
The movie still had so much to say, and to do.

One reason people thought it lasted too long is that is cut to black, making people think it was over, then a new ending came, then repeat. Personally it didn't bother me, but that is the big reason for why people didn't like the many endings.

    • @Richard_Nickerson
      @Richard_Nickerson 5 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @@TheBebuchis
Because each ending is completing a different segment of the story...
      1. *Ring/Sauron destroyed.* No one should have truthfully expected this to be the end. This is just the end of the Ring's story.
      2. *Fellowship reunited.* Again, no one should have expected this to be the real ending... we haven't actually seen the return of the king yet. This is just the opposite bookend of the Council of Elrond. Frodo finally learns that Gandalf is alive and that everyone other than Boromir has survived. He hasn't seen Gandalf since Moria, and the rest since Amon Hen. This is just the Fellowship's ending.
      3. *Return of the King.* The first place one could possibly logically expect an actual ending. However, our main characters are really the Hobbits, specifically Frodo, and that would be a terrible conclusion for their story. This is just Aragorn's ending.
      4. *Grey Havens.* We get to see what happens to Bilbo, Frodo, Gandalf, Galadriel, and Elrond. Anyone who hadn't read the books and hadn't forgotten that all these characters existed would logically wonder what came of them. This is the ringbearers' ending, more specifically Frodo's.
      5. *The final ending.* This is literally less than a minute long. It is a final, necessary nod to the book itself since the scouring of the Shire was cut and we just watched Frodo pass the story off to Sam. This is Sam's ending as well as the actual conclusion to the story as a whole.

I love the part just before that which I hope you are also including in the "I can carry you" moment, because this leads into it, it's when Frodo is climbing mt doom, he stops for a second to look up at how far he still has to go, then that beautiful music kicks in(i don't know what instrument it is but it's one of the most beautiful fucking instruments i've ever heard) and he begins to slowly crawl as it plays. It's one of the best scenes in anything ever. I've watched the trilogy more times than I can count, and I always start welling up when that music kicks in and he begins to crawl. it's so damn great.

Together with Sam carrying Frodo and Frodo boarding the ship at Grey Havens this scene always tears me up. The passing into another world, the fulfillment and thus transcendence captured in these scenes must be what ultimately gets at my heart.
Or perhaps it's just Howard Shore's decision to underscore these three moments with a few orchestral bars of Into the West that makes these three scenes such a one two three punch.

And he just turn around and says: For Frodo. Two words that had so much emotions behind it. Showing its not their fight that needs to be a win. That all sacrifices need to be made so they can win. And that the smallest Hobits can be the bravest by being the first to run.

I thought about this for a few days. I would say my favorite scene is from the Fellowship, where Gandalf tells Frodo, "All you have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to you." This encapsulates a key message of the books/films for me. You do not choose what life throws at you, but you are measured by how you respond to it.

First off, I have to say amazing job on these videos. In school last year I wrote a 5 page research paper trying to decipher what it was about Lord of the rings that made it so much more emotionally grabbing to me than any other story. I think you really nailed it with the definition of fellowship. On my naiavity as a kid I always said the friendships in Lord of the rings made it so impactful. I actually might have been right. The display of loyalty shown by each character is inspiring and heart wrenching.
Second of all, my favorite scene. That is such a hard one as there are so many good scenes that really matter to me. Borimir's death is really good. So many plot and story strings are resolved so well. The scene before the battle of helms deep in which theodin recites the poem from the Rohirrim is also another great one. Aragorn's honoring the hobbits is also a killer. Sam's speech in the two towers is great. Another commenter talked about the Aragorn "for Frodo" scene. Amazing. But all in all I think my favourite scene in the whole trilogy is Sam carrying Frodo up the mountain. That scene means so unbelievably much to me. It inspires me to try and be the best friend I can be. It is more than words can explain.

One of my favorite moments is Gandalf vs the Balrog, theres nothing cooler than two ancient beings fighting it out in Moria (Black Pit). After he falls you see the fellowship's moral at their lowest point, they've lost their leader and dear friend. You see Gimli wanting to go back in but Boromir is holding him back, Merry is holding Pippin and he's breaking down because technically it's all his fault those events happened, you see Legolas looking like it's the first time he's had to deal with the loss of a good friend, and finally Aragorn becomes leader of the fellowship.
It's so hard to choose! Because there is also the Ride of the Rohirrim, which is unarguably the greatest Calvary charge in cinema history and never fails to give someone goosebumps.
    What's your favorite part guys?

  • @rochey1010
    @rochey1010 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I see this trilogy as just one huge ass movie that is so emotionally satisfying. I experience the whole spectrum of emotions watching it, everything from laughter, grief, excitement, despair etc. and it honestly feels like a catharsis for me, like a cleansing in some sort of way. With that said, there's just so many moments to mention but a few off hand that stand out and come to mind:
    - "take it, you must take it...DON'T tempt me Frodo" Ian Mckellan is just Gandalf period, and i love the innocence and naivety of Frodo.
    - Bilbo reverting to a frightened child from Gandalf's outburst, and the true effects the ring has on him. The way he hugs him pulled me apart.
    - The entire setting up the prologue for middle earth with Cate Blanchet's narration. Concise, to the point and goosebump inducing.
    - Experiencing the horror type of element in a fantasy movie, where the hobbits need to get off the road and are hiding under the tree stump with the Ringwraith right there looking for them, and the way the environment seems to warp around them too. I remember truly being terrified for them and stunned at how well PJ was conveying the threat of the Nazgul.
-The Nazgul appearing out of nowhere, and the hobbits being chased onto the ferry to Bree. This had me screaming at the TV.
    - Aragorn's "are you frightened, not nearly frightened enough...i know what hunts you" - a great introduction to a legendary character
    - Aragorn fighting the Nazgul on weathertop.
    - Arwen's introduction "what's this, a ranger caught off his guard" and then her reveal as an elf to Frodo, how charmed and impressed i was with how she played the wisdom and elegance of the elves. Everything from her look to her dictation was so good.
-Sam's screaming at Aragorn "WHAT ARE YOU DOING, THOSE WRAITH'S ARE STILL OUT THERE"
    - the entire flight to the ford sequence was when i realized that this movie was something really special. How it's shot with the race against time aspect, and the zoom out to the 9 Nazgul on Arwen's tail. How close they get to her, and how she conveys the desperation for Asfolath to go faster. Her bravery and resolve on the bank challenging them calling the water, her compassion and fear for Frodo.
    - Introduction to Elrond and another example of how well the elves are portrayed in these movies. His talk with Gandalf about the ring not being able to stay in Rivendell, how he watched men fail and his hint about Aragorn denying his destiny.
    - the entire council and formation of the fellowship.
    - The beautiful love scene on the bridge between Aragorn and Arwen and them talking in Sindarin. The reveal of the evenstar which i then bought a replica of.
    - Boromir's playful side with the hobbits and the training.
    - Boromir's pull towards the ring and his introspection of the power it has.
    - The mines of Moira and how the camera pans around to show the might and beauty of the halls with the beautiful score.
    - Gimli's grief in the tomb
    - The Balrog's coming and Gandalf and Legolas shit themselves.
    - "YOU SHALL NOT PASS....fly you fools"
    - "give them a moment for pity sake....by midnight this mountain will be crawling with orcs" this whole scene had me crying with how PJ showed the different reactions to grief from Boromir's compassion, Aragorn's resilience, Sam's despair, Merry/Pippin's shock, and especially Legolas's confusion over what he's feeling and seeing as Elves are immortal but Frodo's face is what does it, how he's already moving forward without being told and the resignation and pain in his eyes.
God there's so much and this is just the first movie.

When Merry and Pippin, the two tiny hobbits ("...they would be small, only children to your eyes"), fearlessly are the first to charge along after Aragorn...their courage and bravery in the face of certain death reminds you again of what the fellowship truly meant to each of those nine individuals as well as to the group as a whole. This trilogy is not just a story of good vs. evil, it is a story of hope ('Estel') and the trust that those who started out as strangers placed in one another to be rewarded in the end with the knowledge and bond of true love, devotion, and friendship. It was so profound that the 9 fellowship actors had the elvin/tengwar lettering for 'nine' permanently tattooed onto their bodies. Wow, now thats what I call a bond and partnership that went beyond friendship. We will never see the likes of this story or movie again. Well done Professor Tolkein, Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Phillipa Boyens.👏👏👏 "...you have my sword".

There is two detail that always broke me to tears: 1) Sam and Frodo tried to climb Mount Doom, in Sam's arms, Sam told Frodo, "Do you remember the Shire, Mr Frodo? It'll be spring soon..." 2) follows with the soft music by Howard Shore. That broke me each time cos despite the immense smoke and flame from the Mountain, and the evil on Frodo's neck, Sam is there to remind Frodo and the audience of where they came from; to remind Frodo of their simple lives before, the life to which they hold on to. It's at this moment that I feel brings so much depth to the theme of 'the little people making big changes. Also, the importance of reminding ourselves of what we hold on to in life, in our most dire of times. Great video Weight of Cinema!

Frodo is unable to climb mount doom and falls and lies face down on the ground. Sam falls too. The flute music that plays in the background is emotionally powerful. I imagine myself falling down like Frodo when I am going through tough times.

Lord of the rings has been with me as long as I can remember. When I was little me and my brother used to go to my grandmother's house and watch them (she had all the extended versions). Those are Sundays that I'll never forget.
My favorite scene in the trilogy is when Frodo and Sam are laying on that rock outside of mount doom and lava is surrounding them. I remember seeing that and just thinking to myself that this came to an end and they saved Middle Earth.
So when I think of that scene I not only think about how good Lord of the Rings is, but I think about the good times I had with my brother

One of my favorite moments in the movie trilogy is when Frodo finally escapes Shelob’s lair and he falls down on his face and encounters Galadriel. He’s almost to the end of his rope. The ring has made him physically and emotionally exhausted and his friend is gone because of it. Galadriel reminds him that “if he doesn’t find a way, no one will.” It encourages him to get up and at least keep moving. The way the scene was put together with the editing, music and cast made a very impactful moment in a dark part of the story I think.

One of the greatest messages from Tolkien is, that it's not always the big heroes or great Kings who deliver us from evil or overcome the evil - it's more often the small, unnoticed and insignificant creatures who triumph in the end.
And the true heroes and great rulers recognize it - like Aragorn and Gandalf do.

Well regarding my feelings towards the films. It is hard to find "one feeling to rule them" all - there is simply so many! Instead I'll share what came to my mind when I began to ponder the subject.
First of all to my head came to visage of Boromir. It is astounding what film makers did to this charakter! I simply love his entire arc, the friendship with the hobbits, the impossible burden and expectations set on him by his father, his duty to his homeland and his people to save them, people who belie in him that he alone will bring them salvation from unyielding evil, and finally his heroic death and reconciliation with Aragorn.
Secondly I thought about friendship of Sam and Frodo. When he refused to let Frodo go alone.
Then from the second movie I thought about the siege of Helm's deep. Especially masterfully crafted "silence before the storm". Feeling of impending dred and inevitable doom. The appearance of the enemy and their chanting. Bashing spears and shields echoing through the caverns with civilians not knowing what is happening outside, only waiting and listening, thinking of the worst. The entire battle that ensues is a true rollercoaster of emotions, victory mixed with defeat. Glimpse of hope snuffed out by next enemy move.
Then staying with the Rohirims I moved to the third film. When Aragorn proclaims that Gondor needs them. Then Theoden counts out times that Gondor abandoned them in the time of need, times that they didn't come, times that Rohan was left allone against their enemies. Yet despite being time and time again betrayed by their allies Theoden decides without a second thought to help their Gondor allies in a time of need when they call for their help. THAT IS TRUE HONOR. And on a personal level I feel especially strong feelings about it due to fact I'm from Poland. And this is what happens to us all the time. All our allies could count on us through history, yet when we needed help of our allies the most... they didn't come. Good example is WWII. During Germany's attack, day after day until the very end People thought - "we have to fight another day, just another day and the allies will come... for sure! We need to survive just another day!"... and in the end no one ever comes. The same thing happened 5 years later during Warsaw uprising in 1944. Look it up.
Then later in that movie when Minas Tirith is beached and few rings have already fallen and the next are surely to follow, Rohirims arrive. Theoden makes in my opinion the best sepach in entire trilogy! Short, emotionally charged, effective and very very powerful! Then followed by a glorious charge! Again, that is always for me reminiscent of The Battle of Vienna/The Relief of Vienna/12 September 1683. Ottomans where leading, seemingly unstoppable, conquest of christian Europe. When Holly Roman Emperor Leopold I send a request of aid from besieged capital of Vienna to Polish King John III Sobieski, they came. Then lead a charge of our finest cavalry Winged Hussars (wildly accepted as the best heavy cavalry in the world at the time) to brake two months siege in one decisive charge! The feat is accepted by historians to be a turning point in the history that stopped Ottomans spreading their influence and religion in Europe. So you can see there is a lot of familiarity ;D
Also I really get the feels during Doomed Faramir Charge on Osgiliath and Pipin Song.

Sam's speech to Frodo about the stories that really matter at the end of Two Towers, "I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you" scene from Return of the King, either Theoden or Aragorn's speech to the soldiers, Boromir's death in Fellowship, everybody in Minas Tirith bowing to the Hobbits, the classic "You shall not pass!" moment, Eowyn's "I am no man" moment, etc etc etc. There are so many great moments from the trilogy that I honestly don't know if I have a favorite, but I will say that I love Sam as a character so it's probably one of his great lines. Maybe even PO-TA-TOES.

This is one of the best analysis of the trilogy I’ve seen in a while.
I have to mention that although the filmmakers didn’t intend it, the core values of western society, Christianity, is what makes the story resonate so much. Tolkien was one of the most learned scholars in story, myth, and religion ever-and this core shines through in the movies as well.

I love that in the film, as in the book, Sam gets the last word and screen time. He is the real hero of the story, and has the biggest and most important character arc. One of my favorite scenes that always stands out to me is the end of Fellowship of the Ring when Frodo stands at the edge of the river, holding the ring in his hand, with tears down his face and the words of Gandalf in the Mines of Moria come to him and he makes his choice, though he knows it will not be easy. That scene gets me every time. Basically the whole last 20 minutes of the Fellowship is so good.

  • @maxwalraevens7795
    @maxwalraevens7795 5 ปีที่แล้ว

The scenes where they truly understand are just so great. They strengthen this feeling that they really did travel long periods together and develop bonds.
The entire scene where Frodo leaves the fellowship with Sam. It’s scene where they show to be vulnerable, with the second but only real casualty and 2 abductions as a consequence of the “ambush”. How Boromir tries to reconcile with his conscience by not giving up and also proving to us that absent the ring he’s a decent guy trying to protect those he cares for. It demonstrates the real power of the ring and why Frodo is to carry it all the way. But most of all is how they (both Merry, Pippin & Aragorn) directly understand with no words that Frodo wanted to continue alone from there on because he didn’t feel comfortable with so many the ring could influence around him. It supports the idea that there was this vibe in the air before the clash.
Truly a wonderful and realistic representation of how the fellowship on every level. Their personalities are hitting the mark but they also know how the others think. Piece of art.

"White shores and beyond.." and the scene where Frodo takes off.
It's interesting because Peter Jackson actually just took Tolkien's description of Frodo's entering into the west after he leaves Middle-earth and moved it to this speech from Gandalf. I think it's a brilliant move from Jackson, because the west or the Undying lands is obviously a metaphor for an afterlife, and the music excellently resonates this point in the end, as Frodo and Gandalf sets out on the sea. These two scenes are deeply connected, and the way Frodo turns around on the ship in the end to behold his friends without sorrow but rather a peaceful smile that says "we'll see each other again" is so powerful. I think it captures the soul of Tolkien himself who never wanted to make his stories a christian allegory, but at the same time recognized how they were deeply catholic.
That one smile simply says it all. "Death is just another path" Gandalf says, and we see in that moment that Frodo knows that, and that enables him to smile, and it asks the audience, how will you face your own death?

As a fan of the books for some decades, I was amazed at Gandalf's fall in Khazad-dûm. I knew very well when it would happen, where it would happen, how it would happen, and Gandalf's words when it happened. Not only was all this pretty faithfully depicted on screen (itself a bit surprising in a film), but it completely grabbed me emotionally. It was like reading it for the first time, which was astonishing. This was when I knew Jackson was doing something right (shortly after the dubious and already dated 'dwarf tossing' gag).

The most powerful scene is surely the final scene of The Fellowship, with Sam wading into the lake to follow Frodo, floundering and sinking. Then the music swells as Frodo takes his hand and drags him out. The Fellowship is in disarray and all seems lost but courage and commitment pull the characters through.

First time I end up in the verge of tears with an analysis video. Wow.
Melancholy, I think you just hit the nail on the head with that one. That is the feeling I'm left with after I read a great book. When I close it, it feels satisfying and yet it is as if I have lost something. I feel that is a lot harder to do with a movie, because we only can spend so much time watching it. And yet this movie did this for me. I left the theater in silence, and actually trying to digest what I had just seen, not willing to share it with anyone until I had finished my own process.

  • @marcel9971

As I just had to do after your second video, I want to thank you after this one as well for building up another part of understanding why this trilogy more than any other piece of art influenced and influences the way I am as a human.
"The Lord of the Rings" means so much to me, made me at least slightly crying so many times, moving my heart and emotions with so many scenes, that I guess that I will never find the words in any language to describe what I truly feel about the trilogy.
Despite that, you did a great job to explain me a perspective on the story and the movies to bring some organisation into the waves of emotions; I now understand myself a bit better.
To decide which scene is the most impactful to me may be impossible; but I will give it a try (I have watched the movies only in German language yet, so sorry if any names or other words in my description are wrong):
One of the last scenes of all, Gandalf addressing Frodo that time has come. The other hobbits wondering about the meaning, slowly understanding, that one of their best friends (and surely the best one of Sam) is about to leave them forever. And of course Frodo hugging a crying Sam. There is not only a sense of melancholia, but melancholia itself concentrated in this moment.
We have yet watched so many other great scenes of men and women fighting and dying for each other, sacrificing everything they have to not let anyone down, traveling roads that never truly seem to lead to any success because they just had to hold on to hope, where no hope existed (maybe my second favourite scene is Faramir riding to sure death because of his father's order while Pippin sings for a dining Denethor).
Now Frodo following the last Elves into a kind of paradise "leaving the earth" shows so much about all the inner scars without telling about them. As you beautifully said, Frodo succeeded, but lost himself on his journey.
Thank you again for these three wonderful analystic videos, I sure will share them with a few friends who also appreciate the trilogy to reward your effort.

That was truly great. I have never heard anyone talk about this with such passion.
So my favorite scene is in the grey havens, where the hobbits are already sad that Gandalf is leaving. On top of that they get to hear that Frodo also isn't staying. Even writing this I start to tear up. Of course there are other great scenes which are probably all listed in the comments.
Really dude thank you for this great homage to The Lord of the Rings and then The Return of the King in special. It was really great to listen to it...😊

It's very hard for me to tell which scene is the best. It takes me by the heart when Sam carries Frodo on his back, farewell of Frodo on the Grey Heavens and... the ending when Sam closes the door.
However if I had to choose the best plotline, it would be Aragorn's story and Eowyn's character arc. I just love those two.

Awesome video. Very touching. I think my favorite scene in the 3 films is when Gandalf rides in at the end of the Battle of Helms Deep.
