My first visual novel was Everlasting Summer (which is very popular in Russia and other post-USSR countries), but my first Japanese visual novel was The Song of Saya. This was an amazing experience, it's a great VN with an awesome plot. But my most favorite visual novel is definitely Umineko: When They Cry. It's one of the longest VNs in history, but it's a brilliant masterpiece deserving every minute dedicated to it!
My first visual novel was If My Heart Had Wings on the Nintendo Switch. I’ve always loved anime with stories about people pursuing their passions (The Pet Girl of Sakura-sou, Remake Our Life! and Your lie in April being great examples), so when I saw If My Heart Had Wings it seemed like a story I would really enjoy, it being about a group of friends building a glider and taking to the skies. I ended up really loving it, and it’s had a special place in my heart ever since, being the game that introduced me to the world of visual novels :)
Thank you for this list! As I am new to VNs, I found this particularly accessible and exciting. I DLed Katawa Shoujo and recently picked up VA-11 Hall-A physical for switch and I can't wait to dive in! 📚
I’m still actively becoming a fan of this genre, my first encounter with a VN was with Steins;Gate. Then I quickly jumped to the sister game Robotics;Notes. These videos are great to find new games to try, thanks for making this Channel and videos!
Loved playing through Steins;Gate! Steins;Gate Elite is a great refresh to the game since it uses the animation from the show instead of static images.
My first visual novel was none other than Type-Moon’s glorious emotional roller coaster known as Tsukihime. I can’t not recommend anything created by type moon, they are the GODS of VNs.
Loved Planetarian! Picked it up after watching the anime! Also in my opinion an easy VN to get into and not too terribly long is Worldend Syndrome. Very intriguing horror/mystery. Even got me to go through all the routes because I was so interested in the story to get all the endings!
I just bought and beat my first VN this last week- Famicom Detective Club: The Missing Heir. Would recommend, i loved it (even though some of the logic puzzles were outlandish)
Super useful content. I just watched your list of short VNs and wish I had come across these before buying my first. Ace Attorney looks like a must buy. Every time Ace Attorney comes up it gets nothing but praise. 😱
I learned a long time after the fact that Ever17 is in fact not a beginner vn. XD But it was my first vn and sparked my love for the genre. I still consider it the best vn to this day even though I've played more like Remember11, Steins Gate, Island, and the 999 trilogy.
Great video, my first vn was probably 999 on the DS. Im not sure if I would recommend Song of Saya as an entry Vn, though it is very good. I love Utawarerumono, probably my favorite vn. I forget where I read it but there was a meme with the pronouncing it and they called it Uta Ray Ramano, referencing the Everybody loves Raymond show. I remember food being a big part in the game so here's some 🍜
Katawa shoujo was my first visual novel and i agree with you it is such a heartwarming game with a lot to love about it, but my favorite has to be little busters that visual novel changed my opinion on visual novels and made me want more
My first visual novel was DDLC, though my first "major" VN I played (which happened to be after DDLC) was Steins;Gate. Fantastic time, though it does take a while to speed up and get good. My first playthrough I had no idea the phone had such a major impact on progression, so for anyone else who's played through it, you can probably guess which ending I got :)
I also recommend Utawarerumono! Though my first pure VN was Ephemeral Fantasy on Dark (a small and sweet otome game). I think my gateway games were actually JRPGs by Idea Factory like Dragon Start Varnir, Death end request and Crystar, as I realised I don't mind sitting through hours of dialogue at all, I actually find it more relaxing than gameplay games ..and well, after Ephemeral then early last year I haven't touched a "normal" game ever since....
Danganronpa is the best place for complete VN newbies to start because it's fast paced and has great mainstream appeal. After that, i would let them read Steins;Gate because it's more demanding but leads to an amazing payoff if you do the investment of time. If they get trough Steins;Gate and end up loving it, it's time to finally, seemingly casually mention Muv-Luv. Because that is my favorite work of fiction ever created but it's so intensely otaku that it's impossible to recommend to inocent civilians without first preparing them mentally. 🙂
A VN that nobody talked about is 428: Shibuya Scramble. It's a very odd format for its time that just somehow work.... using still live action footage instead of anime. Player will play multiple very likeable characters to unveil the full story, fill with twist and turns along with some very clever writing.
These are all the leader VNs,an underrated one, literally 7 years old; "her tears were my light" the game definitely deserves a wayy larger audience. For a 1 and a half hour VN,you will enjoy every bit of it.(the game for short;the universe is gay. You'll get it later. Its themed around space and time)
If anyone reads this: I would recommend Mahoyo - Witch on the Holy Night. Its part of the fate/nasuverse and is probably the visual novel with the best visuals, animations and special effects and a awesome ost.
I been a gamer my whole life. I'm 38. Never have I entered the genre of VN. Recently my very 1st VN is Doki Doki. I was amazed at the game and myself that I was engaged and not bored
My first vn was The seven mysteries of fujisawa on switch. I got it for 1 usd last year and it's nice for that price. Some little gameplay sections, multiple endings and a plot twist in the Middle make it a solid entry option. And of course Doki doki is just in another league completely. Not only the base game is amazing but you have literally hundreds of mods that give you extra content for months or years. I will never forget the first time I opened the door gently.
Thanks for the suggestions. Picking up a couple of these. So far Doki Doki Lit Club is my favorite but I am new to the genre. I have several of your suggestions incoming. I think I will read the House of Fata Morgana next. I have it on my shelf already. I picked it up before I had any interest in the genre and glad I did, from what I’ve seen in reviews.
@@PhysicalParadise I figured it was a good intro since it had a little more to do than many other VNs. If you can handle the subject matter at least lol.
After watch this video I can feel my VN backlog staring right behind me, to stop me from buying more of it even not even half of my collection I finish to play👮♂️ Ace Attorney the great VN for me
I played VN as eroge when I was young. I was surprised on how good an erotic story could be, when compared to occidental porn movies... The slice of life into it was so good, I felt like losing friends when the game was over. So I stopped with those titles. I only considered playing a VN a decade later, because Steins;Gate was high on a bunch of "adventure game" lists. It was quite difficult to jump into it, because I wasn't use to this kind of narration for adventure, but it was a massive hit! Now I love playing VN... When I have time (I survived Uminkeo)
📝 (only played 2 lol) I’m really liking the Visual Novel genre so far. I’m new to the genre, starting with Doki Doki, which I also recommend due to its short length (as long as you can handle the horror parts). I also played Eternal Radiance which I’d also recommend since the VN parts are broken up with a decent enough JRPG experience (also good for people looking to get into JRPGs as well) with a decently short length, it took me 16 hours and 50 minutes. I also have Re:ZERO (I think it’s a VN?) Aokana and If My Heart Had Wings that I haven’t had the time to play yet but I definitely plan on playing them in the near future!
Was Doki Doki Literature Club really good for you? I thought it would make not a great entry point since it really parodies a lot of tropes that VN rely on.
@@WesY2K I really liked it. But like I said, I have only played it and Eternal Radiance (which I’m not 100% sure can be considered a real VN). So I don’t have a lot to compare it to. I just know it’s the one that got me interested in the genre after playing it. I don’t see it being my all time favorite or anything once I’ve played more. But for a short little 5-6 hours for a single play through game I really enjoyed it. I had never heard of it before and bought it based on the Switch trailer calling it a “psychological horror experience” when it looked so wholesome and cutesy out of curiosity and, for what it was, I wasn’t disappointed. Especially since it’s so cheap.
The Ace Attorney and Nonary Games series were my first VNs, played it nonstop on the DS. Danganronpa i played on the Playstation and want to play it on the Switch too, it’s nice to play VNs while on the commute. ⚖️👨🏻⚖️
Subscribed because you named some amazing vns. I personally like action and mystery and am looking forward to suggestions that for that. Played house of fata morgana and nothing has topped that for me. Raging loop and the Utawaremono series are close seconds.
I haven’t dug into VN yet, but I’ve been adding some to my list and had a few more added. I appreciate this list because I love a good story so games like Gnosia sounds exciting. If I had to pick one it would be ⚔️ Utawarerumono games. I love strategy RPG games so it fits.
Stiens;Gate Then Stiens; Gate 0. Then I found out about Chaos Head (no english but the anima episodes are on Funimation) Then Chaos Child I’m playing now). Soon want to start Robotics Notes
A few days ago I upgraded my storage space on my vita and wanted to try 10 VNs to fit the Bubble Folder, and is was helpful. I already was aware of some anime ones like Psycho pass Child child steins gate.
One of the more unpopular and obscure vn titles is theresia for the ds. It's pretty good despite some annoying backtracking, though it didn't sell very well so I can't blame you if you haven't heard of it. It's also a little pricey these days due to its rarity
Another series that was very good for beginners was the parascientific escape games on the 3DS. They're short, and they have some gameplay as well, not just reading. Similar to the ace attorney games. First VN? Probably the first Ace Attorney game.
I was somewhat interested in the difficult to pronounce one and Baldr Sky, but it looks like they're not available on the Switch. Maybe next time. Thanks for the recs!
1st VN Season of Sakura Most beloved VNs Devil on G string and Sharin no Kuni Most fun Mainstrem VNs Rewrite and Little busters. VN that has a special place in my Heart Da Capo 2. Not listing Muv Luv Alternative since its more of a Kinetic Novel than a VN. thogh there are ton of more that were memorable like Hoshizora no Memoria, Dracu riot, and the Metioned Sabat of the Witch Doki Doki is a interesting choice thogh if someone picks that up as his 1st and think this is the "normal" he/she has a non insignificant chance to never touch VNs again....
Thanks for the video Jordan. Quick question, have you heard of the game Cinders? It seems like a visual novel, just wondering your thoughts. Enjoying it at the moment! Also emoji for my fave visual novel 🕛 ah there is no microwave emoji too. Steins Gate!
@@PhysicalParadise yep I've finished it and am trying the different paths. It's obviously not Japanese style art but I think it's very well done along with the fairy tale music and unique perspective etc. Will move onto other VNs soon, some purchased with your guidance. Thanks again
My first visual novel is Bishoujo Mangekyou -Wasurenagusa to Eien no Shoujo- .At first, I thought this is just a hentai game, but when I played to the end.I thought:ah? This story is not simple. So I played it again, and was suprised by the end.
Another great video, thanks Jordan and Miguel! I'm interested in Utawarerumono for Vita and was wondering how many games, what order, and do they have physicals? Thanks!
Here's what Miguel said "The Utawarerumono series is a trilogy and it should be played in order: Prelude to the Fallen -> Mask of Deception -> Mask of Truth. Prelude to the Fallen is a remake of the original Utawarerumono, which came out in 2002, so story wise it's a bit detached from Mask of Deception and Mask of Truth, but it should be played first as some of the characters make an appearance (and Mask of Deception spoils one twist of Prelude to the Fallen right at the beginning). There's also a spin off called Utawarerumono Zan, which afaik it's a retelling of the Mask of Deception story line, but instead of a VN it's a brawler. Although I believe it got a bit of a mixed reception, so I'm guessing it's more of a game meant for those who have already played the original instead of being a substitute for it. Physically I think both Vita and PS4 got physical releases, but I don't know if they are easy to find these days."
I don't really think Saya no Uta is a good title to introduce anyone to VNs, don't get me wrong is a great game but it could give a wrong impression to new people, instead I'd recommend something like Famicom Investigation Club or World End Syndrome.
Doki Doki literature club was the most saccharine "twist" to ever try to consider itself edgy. So much so that it wasn't an even Doki Doki nor edgy, but it sure tried hard...but did it really?
Utawarerumono was great, but they have a sad track record of really disappointing endings IMO. The plot twist in the first one was an OK idea, but the execution was seriously kinda meh. And the second one's (I count Mask of Deception and Mask of Truth duology as a single title, since they are supposed to be played one after another) ending dragged on for _WAY_ too long. I think the sequel had like three or four endings, and by the time I got through them, I was so done with the narrative, that any positive feelings I had towards the story were completely gone. And that's really sad, because in both cases everything prior to the ending, I absolutely _adore._ The original fantasy setting, the cast, the jokes, the drama, the atmosphere... If _only_ they didn't screw up the endings :(
Does Chicken Police qualify as a VN? I really enjoyed that. I also love Doki Doki; I'll be getting the physical Switch release soon. I might look into Gnosia as well; looks interesting.
First was Steins gate and was amazed at how good it was. Loved Danganrompa series. Tried a few of the Otome games. Surprisingly PyschPass was my least favorite as I just couldn’t get into it.
🐻🧑🎓🔪🔪 It’s the Danganronpa series for me! XD and also various random VNs on mobile before that. Currently playing Collar x Malice and Ace Attorney Justice For All 😆
Like I normally dont go for VN's when I am to game, but it has happened occasionally that I want to check a VN out, but I been in massive bad luck, as those I tried was terrible, as in poorly written, and personally didn't care for the art (point out I am not into huge boobs) >.> anyway, if I am to play a pure VN, I want a romantic story, and the most important thing is to have a happy ending, to me anywya, however those I tried had either bad ending or okaish ending, buut no good happy ending, and those I tried, I did get all the endings for, to try get good ending, only to find out it was not really that good. Oh well, I stroke luck with boyfriend dungeon though, which I mention before, and there is a few good endings in that one, if you chose the right Boyfriend/girlfriend :P some bad endings too. Do totally recommend that game, but mostly because its not just VN, but also dungeon crawling.
My first VN was actually Ace Attourney but I never realized it was classified as such when I played it. So to me, my first VN was Doki Doki, at least in terms of sparking my interest in VNs in general. Great list!
@@skycloud4802 I've never finished it, but I did play quite a bit of the first game and it was really fun! I hope you get a chance to play and you enjoy it.
I have tried to like visual novels because I really enjoy manga’s and comics however I tried to play Doki Doki and could not get into it. I saw the same image for way to long. I played a bit of corpse party and really enjoyed it but it’s not on switch. Persona text is awesome because the gameplay.

Nice video. My first VIsual Novel was ''The House in Fata Morgana''.
My backlog already hates me but I really do wanna try playing Ace Attorney and Death Mark. Great list though. 👌
You will not regret Ace Attorney!
Good list. I started with Collar X Malice and it was pretty easy to get into. Also, for the horror fans I'd also recommend the Death Mark games.
Death Mark can be hit or miss for some people, but I like it!
@@PhysicalParadise I figured it was a good intro since it had a little more to do than many other VNs. If you can handle the subject matter at least lol.
Oh...
Katawa Shoujo... Great memories... Thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching! 😊
Great Ace Attorney chronicles and Danganronpa Decided are the first 2 I have played because of you. Thank you
Great stuff!
It's truly because of you and your show taught me about them.
my first visual novel was "Find Love or die trying" the next was Doki Doki literature club big contrast from the former lol
After watch this video I can feel my VN backlog staring right behind me, to stop me from buying more of it even not even half of my collection I finish to play👮♂️ Ace Attorney the great VN for me
Cool, looking for that page turning feeling
Recommending Says is an absolute goat move.
Doki doki was my first VN and I played it 5 hours straight 😆 Loved it. Perfect first. 🍒
Wow that was a marathon!
There are so many interesting titles! Thk you for the list 👊
I have had my eye on gnosia but this video has confirmed U should get it sounds right up my street :)
It’s wonderful!
Ace Attorney Trilogy, Steins;Gate and Danganronpa were the games that got me into VNs.
The classics!
My first was Saya no Uta! But the first that got my heart was Katawa Shoujo ❤
Gnosia is my favorite game of all time!
More VN goodness! All hail Jordan!
📚
The Ace Attorney and Nonary Games series were my first VNs, played it nonstop on the DS. Danganronpa i played on the Playstation and want to play it on the Switch too, it’s nice to play VNs while on the commute. ⚖️👨🏻⚖️
Subscribed because you named some amazing vns. I personally like action and mystery and am looking forward to suggestions that for that.
Played house of fata morgana and nothing has topped that for me. Raging loop and the Utawaremono series are close seconds.
Raging loop is the most underrated VN I have seen.
Same. Started with SG and then SG0. Played the 999 games and then Chaos Child. CC is really great.
Going through some great ones!
A few days ago I upgraded my storage space on my vita and wanted to try 10 VNs to fit the Bubble Folder, and is was helpful. I already was aware of some anime ones like Psycho pass Child child steins gate.
Zero Escape and Saya are perfect recommendations
One of the more unpopular and obscure vn titles is theresia for the ds. It's pretty good despite some annoying backtracking, though it didn't sell very well so I can't blame you if you haven't heard of it. It's also a little pricey these days due to its rarity
I still have and enjoy Ace Attorney, Justice for All and Trials and Tribulations on the DS.
Brilliant games!
Another series that was very good for beginners was the parascientific escape games on the 3DS. They're short, and they have some gameplay as well, not just reading. Similar to the ace attorney games.
First VN? Probably the first Ace Attorney game.
Can’t say I’ve heard of that!
Great episode. Thank you.
Thanks matey!
I started with the ace attorney trilogy now I'm on doki doki looking to get some horror now just finished your recommendation video on horror VN
Well Doki Doki is the perfect introductory horror 😆
@@PhysicalParadise 😁 what could you recommend switch wise "HORROR"?
Yuzusoft: You need more Moe in your life? We've got you covered.
You should have said their slogan, too xD
My first? Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy
man imagine reading saya no uta as your first VN
I was somewhat interested in the difficult to pronounce one and Baldr Sky, but it looks like they're not available on the Switch. Maybe next time. Thanks for the recs!
1st VN Season of Sakura Most beloved VNs Devil on G string and Sharin no Kuni Most fun Mainstrem VNs Rewrite and Little busters. VN that has a special place in my Heart Da Capo 2. Not listing Muv Luv Alternative since its more of a Kinetic Novel than a VN. thogh there are ton of more that were memorable like Hoshizora no Memoria, Dracu riot, and the Metioned Sabat of the Witch
Doki Doki is a interesting choice thogh if someone picks that up as his 1st and think this is the "normal" he/she has a non insignificant chance to never touch VNs again....
the first two Zero Escape games are really good
Thanks for the video Jordan. Quick question, have you heard of the game Cinders? It seems like a visual novel, just wondering your thoughts. Enjoying it at the moment!
Also emoji for my fave visual novel 🕛 ah there is no microwave emoji too. Steins Gate!
Yeah I featured it in my mega Switch VNs list over at SwitchWatch, seems surprisingly good!
@@PhysicalParadise yep I've finished it and am trying the different paths. It's obviously not Japanese style art but I think it's very well done along with the fairy tale music and unique perspective etc. Will move onto other VNs soon, some purchased with your guidance. Thanks again
"These are his words, not mine!" LOL
I learned japanese to play baldr sky in 2017, best decision of my life
You know the top is worth watching when it starts with Katawa Shoujo
My first visual novel is Bishoujo Mangekyou -Wasurenagusa to Eien no Shoujo- .At first, I thought this is just a hentai game, but when I played to the end.I thought:ah? This story is not simple. So I played it again, and was suprised by the end.
Another great video, thanks Jordan and Miguel! I'm interested in Utawarerumono for Vita and was wondering how many games, what order, and do they have physicals?
Thanks!
I’ll get Miguel to tell me 😂
Here's what Miguel said "The Utawarerumono series is a trilogy and it should be played in order: Prelude to the Fallen -> Mask of Deception -> Mask of Truth.
Thank you so much, wonderful information!
I don't really think Saya no Uta is a good title to introduce anyone to VNs, don't get me wrong is a great game but it could give a wrong impression to new people, instead I'd recommend something like Famicom Investigation Club or World End Syndrome.
my first (and only) visual novel was ddlc so uh you can image how i was introduced to the genre lol
Sure, it’s very loose but I would could it
First was Steins gate and was amazed at how good it was. Loved Danganrompa series. Tried a few of the Otome games. Surprisingly PyschPass was my least favorite as I just couldn’t get into it.
I think my first one was Tears of tiara 2 on the PS3. A really good game that I don't see a lot of people talking about
Haven’t heard of that one!
@@PhysicalParadise it's a visual novel mix with tactical rpg. You don't need to play the first one to enjoy it. I encourage you to check it out.
I feel so sad because my first visual novel was Euphoria and that was a big mistake
You're fuxking insane labeling Saya no Uta as "beginner friendly" it takes a hardened fan to play.
DDLC was my first VN. Still absolutely love that one 📚
My first one was Professor Layton
my first one was 999 - and i recomend it!
Great game!
🐻🧑🎓🔪🔪
It’s the Danganronpa series for me! XD and also various random VNs on mobile before that. Currently playing Collar x Malice and Ace Attorney Justice For All 😆
The nonary games are on the ds and 3ds too
Never even thought of that. Thank you.
True!
I once played a game I just remember the good feeling, and I think is was called A New Dawn or maybe a new day. Can't seem to find it
My first VN was actually Ace Attourney but I never realized it was classified as such when I played it. So to me, my first VN was Doki Doki, at least in terms of sparking my interest in VNs in general. Great list!
I never realised either. Now I want to play more.
Corpse Party is on Switch! 😊
@@PhysicalParadise thank you for the info I’ll make sure to pick it up
I need that shirt
I'm currently on playstation 4, can i get some recommendations for visual novals (love story games were choices matter)
Need Gnosia physical w/ subs for Switch!
🙏
