5:45 I don’t know why, but that line about “I long for the day when a gun holds 4 bullets and not the other way around” has always stuck with me. And it shows how the development of technology is basically pushed along by violence. In Creed 1 you had exactly one projectile weapon, and it wasn’t the crossbow. Creeds 2-Brotherhood you had your wrist pistol, with single shot rifles slowly appearing. In this game you get up to 6 flintlock pistols, and Syndicate has you gaining 8 shot revolvers. After all that's happened, from the friends lost, the lives destroyed and the man we got to see Edward become in the end, seeing piracy and thus Edward's entire life effectively censored into something "safe and sober" for the masses, I always thought that was supposed to make the player feel uneasy inside.
Safe and sober, while also entirely emphasizing the selfish criminal aspects of the journey to the limits with no touch on the redemption and wisdom gained at the end. A lot of the Abstergo promo videos in the game very much try to smear on freedom while whitewashing templar figures wherever possible when portraying the AC protagonists and it's all very unsettling and cruel when we know what they've been through and stood for.
After Blackbeard was killed, I was so angry that I tried sinking every ship surround the Jackdaw. I died trying to avenge him. On the next try I did have to escape though lol

Thank you for that message at the end "you're the only one holding yourself back" really made me think and reflect. Brilliant video, appreciate the effort and hard work, can't wait for more man!
I will say, I love how the book goes more into Edward's character before he even leaves his family. It's an interesting insight into why he also stays at sea so much.
I wish I could’ve experienced this game for the first time again, especially at the end when Edward sees all his dead friends before seeing his daughter. Being that emotional compelled and moved to tears, man this was one hell of a story
Just replayed this like a week ago and it most definitely holds up to today. The navel combat is just perfection. Edward Kenway is so relatable and his character arc is meaningful and realistic. Ezio will always be my favorite because I’ve spent more time with him but Edward is a very close 2nd.
I consistently go back to this game as a guilty pleasure. Even doing the collectibles is fun simply because it's a pirate world. Not to mention the dlc with Adéwalé being a badass killing slavers.
The worst old ship that ever did sale sailed out of hersy on a windy day and we’re waiting for the day waiting for the waiting for the day we get our pay
I hope that if Ubisoft ever makes another standalone Assassin's Creed game, they allow you to play from the perspective of the templars again like in rogue, but as the templars that killed Edward purely so we can see it happen and not just get told he was stabbed by some shady guys.
I mean this sounds Cliche but it’s all explained in the book AC Forsaken it’s the POV of Haytham growing up including edwards murder and who killed him Etc and it ends with Connor killing him
Another thing worthy of a win is Edward not caring about Ade's skin color, which was a pretty relevant topic during this time period. He doesn't treat Ade as someone inferior, he sees the guy as his equal and he wasn't even angry when Ade turned his back on him later on. He always treats Ade as a friend and how I wish we could have seen them work together as assassins. Best friendship after Ezio and Leonardo.
One point from me: I was studying graphic design when this game came out and I used Abstergo's graphic line as a reference a lot! Say whatever you like about Ubisoft, but when it's about artistic and graphic design they are beasts!
4:19 - That's a genuinely subtle way to tutorialize the tailing mission. The game teaches you, by showing YOU teach Stede Bonnet. I love AC4 and I love your content, you are really sincere with what you like and actually take the time to look for details that most people wouldn't even notice. No, you are not crazy for doing that. As a native Spanish speaker, I can confirm they are talking about Edward at 5:13, they are saying (rough translation): Soldier 1: Is that the man? The... how did you call him? Assassin? Soldier 2: Yes, Duncan Walpole. He should have arrived many days ago. Greetings from Ecuador and keep the good work, man!
8:36 regarding the blank window..... I had heard it was a glitch or something, that the software didn't render what was supposed to be outside. But even in my first playthrough, I never thought that fit, since his other flashbacks have a lot of white void around the edges. I always interpreted the black window (and white voids and such) as part of the memory of the ancestor, and the animus trying to render it. In this case, the window is black because while edward remembers giving this speech and looking out the window, he doesn't remember what was actually outside the window. The window trim is detailed, since he remembers having to look past it (his rundown house) to see his "better life " and at this point, he can't picture what that was (at that time) anymore. [i say edward remembering, but in terms of the game, it would be the strongest memories passed through the genes. Maybe not every detail always shows through, just important or various aspects] **this is similar to the post assassination conversation scenes. You see edward and the victim in details, but nothing of the surroundings, because it doesn't matter**
Your ending monologue was beautiful. Lately, I've been feeling listless and that my art lacks passion and (without my art) it's just not worth it. I did not expect such a powerful message like yours to come my way today...but it is exactly what I needed. Thank you.
I love this game man. Other than the Ezio Trilogy, this is the only game that I still genuinely remember and feel nostalgic for. Though honestly, I'd put it even above the Ezio trilogy.
I've never seen or heard anybody ever say that this game is better than the Ezio trilogy, not once. And on this video he downplayed not just the Ezio trilogy, but Ezio's character. Literally the best written character in the entire franchise. All of a sudden this is a thing now? I can pick any one of the 3 Ezio games and not only is it better than this game, but every game from 3 and forward. I love this guy's videos, but wow did some of the things he said and what I'm seeing in the comments get to me a little bit.
@@gagetaylor192 people have different opinions then you, not everyone has to like Ezio or his games the best. Hell, and I’ll get flak for this, Connor is my favorite assassin in the franchise, Edward is tied for that spot. Ezio is second, and Bayek and Altaïr are tied for third.
@@driips8457 I never said anybody HAD to like any character or games. Only it's a well known fact that the Ezio games and Ezio as a character are objectively the best in the franchise. I just hadn't seen such criticism for his character and such praise for another until this video. People forget these days that there's a huge difference between "I like this character better than the other" and "this character is better than the other". A person can say they like Edward until they're blue in the face and that's fine, that's an opinion. But to say that Edward is a better character than Ezio isn't an opinion. Because that goes against clear and well known fact. The criticisms that this guy gave for Ezio don't even touch the quality of his character. Him being mature after every kill after Vieri makes sense because yeah it seems odd, but Ezio throughout all 3 games always proved to be a fast learner. Seeing how Mario was a main contributing factor for Ezio becoming an assassin and Ezio looking up to him it makes sense he learned fast by example of Mario. So he's literally criticizing character growth, like what?
This was my favourite AC game. The sailing mechanic is a lot of fun and I found the story to be rather unique, with the main character mostly not caring about the cause for most of the game, only being an Assassin because it looked cool and let him gain access to loot.
Can’t believe you won how smooth the document lift was at the first Templar meeting without mentioning the optional mission to pickpocket all three of those guys lol
i have always felt sorry for Bonnet in this game. In real life he was only a pirate for 2 years before he was captured and hanged, and was very unsuccessful but that is where the quote " live a short life but a merry one " comes from.
This guy just makes you feel all kinds of good about yourself talking about the games we all love so much and makes you connect w with these brilliant stories on a much deeper level gotta love it man. 😅😁
The greatest part about this game is, if you take out Edward and the whole Assassin vs Templar bit, how historically accurate everything is. An expert in this part of history reviewed the game and she said that, aside from the whaling which didnt really start until 50 odd years later, everything was extremely accurate down to the personalities of all the known pirates to Blackbeards final words and how he was killed. The only gripe she had about clothing was how much leather Edward wore as that would have given him heatstroke in no time. Even the fact that your crew were barefoot while on the ship is historically accurate.
The game shined brightest for me when I would just sail the sea listening to shanties and exploring islands. I never used fast travel in this one. The world was too pretty to skip.

I just finished this game a few minutes ago (I didn't even realize I was at the end tbh). And all I have to say is that I think it's one of the best video games I've ever played. Came back for the nostalgia, stayed for the gameplay, and the rich story. Edward Kenway is one of my favorite video game protagonists ever.
You made me cry at the end of this video man, in a hecking good way. As always, thank you for another wonderful video about a WONDERFUL game that I love man. Keep up the fantastic work.
This is the best look into the Templar and assassin conflict I’ve ever seen. You managed to explain best the order vs freedom vibe, with saying “on side thinks they already have all the answers and know better and one side realizes there’s always more to learn and experience” I can’t wait to play this again once I get my new Pc
I absolutely loved this man! Thank you for those last moments of reflection you had. It talked to me so deep! I run a channel called AC Landmarks on Twitter and shared your amazing video there, keep doing what you're doing, you're amazing at it!
as a french canadian, i think it's important to point out that the french canadian dialogue is extremely natural unlike what most art quebec releases (especially tv shows) and this game captures the "how we speak" perfectly and it only makes me want more of these characters, even with the silent protagonist. ac4 was also my very first assassin,s creed and so i might be biased but still, i think it feels awesome and definitely deserves a few wins in there.
Amazing analysis, as usual. Edward is one of the best and most complex characters I've ever seen in a video-game, much like Arthur Morgan in that redemption and development regard. Not to sound ignorant of your reflections, but will you conclude the rest of Ezio's games? Thanks for the great content, buddy.
I have and always will have a very special place for this game in my heart, I first played it at a point where I was just old enough to start understanding and feeling the stories unfolding in front of me (I was still pretty young so on more recent replays Ive caught more) and the story is just beautiful, its not the best game ever but it might be my favorite game ever.
After watching this video for the second time, I feel like I must say something. You seem to be, what I consider to be, a great person. You have drive and you are compassionate. Whatever happens in your life don't lose these qualities. And keep up the good work! 💪

The last piece you said in your conclusion really hit home for me. I've been in a rough patch recently trying to figure things out for my life and my future and idk why but those words really hit home. I love your videos and your take on humanity, you only get one life so live it the best you can. I'm not sure if that's actually where you're coming from or that's just my take on it but either way it was exactly what I needed to hear to pull my head out of my ass and just go and do instead of overthinking everything and bringing myself down. I don't really know what else to say other than thank you for the inspiration and motivation to keep going even if things are hard.
Loved playing this game. Edward is such a fantastic protagonist. I could spent hours sailing the seas and doing ship to ship combat after beating the main story. Blackbeard and Mary Read’s deaths were some of the few times I’ve genuinely cried over a characters death in a video game.
19:22 i like the fact that the game let you go off or take your last revenge by destroying all the ships by yourself. I was in great rage when i saw Black Beard's death and this rage wont let me just go off and leave him behind, so I stayed there and destroyed every single ship in the fleet before i left. God, at least i could give BB a best end than just let his body behind while I get off.
Same, first one I played that came bundled on my Xbox 1. I loved pirates and heard many great things about the franchise. I have played this game 3 times over and played the freedom cry DLC. Is in my top favorite games of all time alongside Rdr2 and Ark Survival.

@@TheDennys21 my honest opinion Ezio was a paragon throughout most of the games. Especially in his latter years and is the kind of person we strive to be. You know, I found this game quite the letdown after 3, for the lowered stealth elements, and what I found to be more generic plot (especially modern day,) but with the new context you gave in your videos, I see both of those games together a heavily thematic story about parents, responsibility, generations, and with rogue a very introspective look on the franchise conflict as a whole.

@@nitkills7070 I'd like to jump in here cause I sort of agree with them. 1st I'll admit it's annoying that the Assassin's are barely in Valhalla. 2nd I never encountered any bugs but I understand if those ruined the game for people. I really liked Valhalla for it's adventures it took you on and the massive world you got to explore. I think the characters were alot better than they've been in the past few entries. Like Black Flag, I feel like Eivor learns about himself as we play through the story just as Edward did. The side character's are really interesting as well. Sigurd, Soma, and some of the other alliances you make are just as interesting as the friends you have in Black Flag. Yes there are a lot of them but I liked the "chapters" that play out as story arcs. It may me feel like playing my own Game of Thrones show. I will admit the fact you have to kill ALL the targets to finish the game is ridiculous. Is it long, yes, but I thought it was entertaining enough it stayed fresh.
Blackbeard’s death really hit me, what an impact he had on many
The historical Blackbeard was such an inspirational person and a decent guy. He refused to rob regular working people like a good pirate should.
After Blackbeard was killed, I was so angry that I tried sinking every ship surround the Jackdaw. I died trying to avenge him. On the next try I did have to escape though lol

Brilliant video, appreciate the effort and hard work, can't wait for more man!
I will say, I love how the book goes more into Edward's character before he even leaves his family. It's an interesting insight into why he also stays at sea so much.
Yeah I love that book
Omg the book is soo much in depth ,its honestly my favorite.
Your rewriting of the quote is very inspirational
I wish I could’ve experienced this game for the first time again, especially at the end when Edward sees all his dead friends before seeing his daughter. Being that emotional compelled and moved to tears, man this was one hell of a story
If they ever make a movie using Edward, no one would be more perfect than Charlie Hunnam
Well there's an erotic move called Pirates that features a man that looks very similar to Edward
OR Chris Hemsworth
Just pick Matt Ryan. He's the voice of Edward after all and kinda looks like him.
I saw a tiktok a few days ago about Charlie Hunnam and commented the exact same thing
@@ryanmcguffin8635 especially after seeing him in king Arthur, he's basically Edward in the movie
This game was and is a masterpiece....such likable characters, great setting and timeline, and great gameplay.

I hope that if Ubisoft ever makes another standalone Assassin's Creed game, they allow you to play from the perspective of the templars again like in rogue, but as the templars that killed Edward purely so we can see it happen and not just get told he was stabbed by some shady guys.
Forget Templars. It's been six years since Ubisoft had let us play as an Assassin.
@@unc54 Good point actually
I mean this sounds Cliche but it’s all explained in the book AC Forsaken it’s the POV of Haytham growing up including edwards murder and who killed him Etc and it ends with Connor killing him
Edward wasn't "killed" by templars but mercenaries hired by them. And haytham kills the man who ordered it but not for killing Edward I think.
@@unc54 Just cause they're not Assassin in name (though Hidden One is basically the same thing) does NOT mean you're not playing as one.
Mate, with the ending message you managed to turn my breakfast into a philosophical deep dive. And thank you for that.
Sadly if you play the freedom cry dlc you learn this was a very one sided relationship
One point from me: I was studying graphic design when this game came out and I used Abstergo's graphic line as a reference a lot! Say whatever you like about Ubisoft, but when it's about artistic and graphic design they are beasts!
indeed they are, made it very clear with San Fran in WD2

I love AC4 and I love your content, you are really sincere with what you like and actually take the time to look for details that most people wouldn't even notice. No, you are not crazy for doing that. As a native Spanish speaker, I can confirm they are talking about Edward at 5:13, they are saying (rough translation):
Soldier 1: Is that the man? The... how did you call him? Assassin?
Soldier 2: Yes, Duncan Walpole. He should have arrived many days ago.
Greetings from Ecuador and keep the good work, man!
27:21 adds 6 points when Anne and Edward hold hands. Nice
10:38 I just noticed that you can see Kidd's/Mary's hidden blades way before the Assassin reveal
Maybe not every detail always shows through, just important or various aspects]
**this is similar to the post assassination conversation scenes. You see edward and the victim in details, but nothing of the surroundings, because it doesn't matter**
I gotta say, I totally prefer the Kenway/1700s trilogy to the Ezio one.
I don't know if i can say The same thing. I have a lot of hours and a lot of enjoyment from both trilogies. Most from ACII and ACIV.

I love this game man. Other than the Ezio Trilogy, this is the only game that I still genuinely remember and feel nostalgic for.
Though honestly, I'd put it even above the Ezio trilogy.
Same here my friend the characters hit me the same way red dead did. It made me cry like I just ate five ghost peppers
Nah, Ezio Trilogy is higher ion the list

tbh He's pretty much already in the game in the form of Calico Jack Rackham
The world was too pretty to skip.

as a french canadian, i think it's important to point out that the french canadian dialogue is extremely natural unlike what most art quebec releases (especially tv shows) and this game captures the "how we speak" perfectly and it only makes me want more of these characters, even with the silent protagonist. ac4 was also my very first assassin,s creed and so i might be biased but still, i think it feels awesome and definitely deserves a few wins in there.
As a Canadian y'all really need to shut up.

HELL YEAH. This is my favorite game, and the first AAA title I ever played. I love this game with all my heart, and the music is just mwah.
This was my first AC game, not knowing anything about the series before, and loved every moment of it.

Like Black Flag, I feel like Eivor learns about himself as we play through the story just as Edward did. The side character's are really interesting as well. Sigurd, Soma, and some of the other alliances you make are just as interesting as the friends you have in Black Flag.
