Great video. I've learned a lot over the past 3 years of selling wood. I would recommend not financing truck or trailer or splitter for any your business. Start small and grow slow for sure. Reinvest in your business with the money you make from your business and it will grow faster than. You can imagine. Also cut and split what you can in the winter to keep on top of having dry wood to sell. Looking forward to keeping up yall woodyard.
Yes you are right about making money before spending it. The only purchase I have to make before making the money is getting a dump trailer. I’ve already had orders for cords and I have no way of delivering it right now.
@@FirewoodontheHill I still haven't spent that much. I just got out of my gmc 1500 and got me a 2500 this year. I run boards in the back and can fit 2 facecord stacked in a 6.5ft bed with rails. It's a lot of work loading and unloading but until I can have around the year delivery I just can't justify a $10k dump. Either way great to see how others do it. Intrested in how it all turns out for yall. Also I'm sure firewood will sell in your area for campers and winter time heat.
@@dantheman9852 it’s funny I just sold my 2500 and got a 1500 and now I need a 2500 again… but that will be way later down the road. I can get 12 month 0% financing for a dump trailer so if I time it right I can have two seasons of selling before I start paying interest. Hopefully get it almost paid off before the interest sets in.
@@FirewoodontheHill lol yeah that's funny. That's a great idea if you can time it right when you get a trailer. I'm in hopes maybe next year or the year after i can get me a dump. Well time to get out and get cutting like Chris says lol
Lol still watching firewood channels , I have a lawn business , heading into year 18 . I watch lawn videos everyday .. It’s great that you guys do it together , it’s time spent together , and you get more done . Keep up the good work . I’m inspired , and I’m 52. 2 months In and have the start of your inventory looking as nice as it is, is a great start and setting you up for a great selling season. Good luck and enjoy spending almost all your free time cutting, splitting and stacking. Hope you continue to grow
you guys are on the right track, wish you luck. one thing that is very important when starting a wood business, like Chris says reinvest in your business smartly. maybe instead of buying another saw, just buy a bigger bar. I use to run that 590 and it's an awesome saw. it will serve you right for a long time. take care looking forward to the next video.
Too late haha. I got the stihl 462 for my Birthday. Now that I have ran a 70cc saw I don’t think I can go to a lower cc saw. I love my 590 but the power is night and day difference.
Hi Matt & Sadie. Great job on your firewood business. Before you know it, you are going to be buried with wood. May I offer a suggestion. Stack the wood perpendicular to your driveway, beginning near your garage and working up the driveway. If you make three or four rows from the woods to the driveway, with a two foot space in between these rows of four, you will have some air in between the rows and you will be able to rotate your stock from the wood nearest the house and moving away. You will be very successful and you will need all the room you can get to season your firewood. Keep up the great work!
hi there you watch a lot of the good channels . looking good getting started . i don't buy wood or sell wood but do take free wood . i have found it best to take all wood . you will get on desirable wood but thats good camp fire wood . but how it benefits you is a tree place that knows they can drop anything wont have to think about weather you will take it or not . happy splitting john
You are absolutely right about taking all wood. That’s why I don’t saying anything to the tree guys about the pine unless it gets out of hand. I have a way to get rid of the pine too so no harm no foul.
First time viewer.. just subbed to see more of your videos... my only suggestion is when you think you have enough wood.. triple your inventory and keep the pine for the upcoming camping season.. great for burning outside!! I started 2 years ago to the date and growing at a rapid pace .. just started documenting my progress on TH-cam.. wish I wood have started from the beginning
Yes I’m always wanting more logs. The reason I give my pine away is I only have room for like 30 cords in my wood yard so I want to fill it with the best wood possible.
@@FirewoodontheHill well keep at it and soon enough youll move your operations to a much bigger location.. where you can store and recieve truck loads.. your well on your way to something great!!
Get yourself a sawmill ,,,lots of people getting in to that and no wonder why ,,lumber is big money ,,,always has been ,,always will be ,,a friend mine ordered a wood miser saw mill and it took eight months to get it so hurry up and place your order. That’ll go good with the fire wood business.
Yeah I wanted to get a portable saw mill to try it out but my issue is I don’t have a tractor to move the big logs. Once I get a tractor I will definitely look more into the saw mill idea. Thank you for the suggestion.
Good job you guys! That’s how it starts. I would advice you to make it clear with the tree service companies what you’re looking for, otherwise you might start getting some junk or pieces too big (or too small) to process. And pigeon hole the money you generate from sales to purchase a new saw (if you think you need it) and a Wolfe Ridge or Easton Made as fast as you can. You didn’t ask for my opinion…just giving you some friendly advice of things I would have done differently in the beginning. Its been fun to watch your journey so far. Keep up the good work.
Yes so far I’ve only had 3 pine tree logs which was probably one tree all together so it hasn’t been bad. Yes I can’t wait to get a bigger saw. These 30 plus inch logs are a lot for my 20 inch bar. As for a splitter that’s further down the road but you know I’m already looking lol.
You got a business processing fire wood. A component of that business is to dispose of wood from tree services at low cost to the tree service companies. Remember if they take to to a landfill they will pay a fee to dispose of it. In South Africa we pay about $50 per metric ton to dispose of compostable material at a land fill. Please let the tree services know you will dispose of the trees at a lower rate than the local dump. Do you know if there is some people that chip and compost the smaller branches that can not be used as fire wood?
You got a cool thing going. This is exactly how I started my firewood business a little more then 2 years ago. I'm on pace to do split 150ish cords this year. All from tree service wood. I was able to upgrade my splitter to a commercial splitter as well. It's still being built but will be finished soon and then hopefully I can exceed the 150 cord mark. Splitter speed will become your next bottleneck. If I can make a suggestion, just buy a NeoTec chainsaw for your big saw. No real need to throw 1500 bucks at a Stihl or Husky.
That’s a huge amount of cords! Congrats on your business. It sounds like it’s taking off for you! Glad to have you here. What part of the world are you from?
