Even thought hajime no ippo will forever stay the best sports or just some of the best anime ever but still haikyuu is special I was literally watching ep 10 of season 3 and oh my god it is pure perfection it's also some of best too no question. for me Or anyone who has seen both shows 1st is hajime no ippo and haikyu is 2nd

I don’t know how you can definitively say it’s the best in the genre if you haven’t seen Ashita no Joe, which is considered a masterpiece in anime. But what do I know, I haven’t seen any sports anime. And if you’ve seen Ashita no Joe, then I’m an idiot, but it should be considered.

I don't know what it is about sports anime and bloated casts. Like I get these sports have lots of players but often times they try to make the other teams central characters as well. I wish they would stay more focused on a leaner cast. That being said Pretty Derby S2 is one of my favorites and that has a bit of a large cast. However despite that it does stay focused on its main characters' arc and the side characters help to make the main characters' story more compelling. Definitely going to recommend finishing Ping Pong the Animation as others have stated. Pretty much hits all the points. Chihaya Furu. I Think some of the main cast are under utilized at times. There are also times were the matches aren't paced the best but it handles its drama well and the entire cast is endearing.
Yup. Its themes, presentation, characters and even story are all so amazingly done for an anime that's only 11 episodes. Probably the closest thing to a "perfect" anime that I have seen.
Thing is, I reckon ping pong is the critically the best anime with sports in it, but I don't think it's a 'sports anime'. The story kind of uses ping pong as a platform to build these more abstract ideas relating to heroism, expectations etc, so while I absolutely adore it I don't think it's a pure sports anime in the way Haikyuu is, for example.

meh I don't think its anywhere as near as good as ping pong, but u can argue that ping pong isn't really even a sports anime anyway. Pretty much all the things you mentioned ping pong does really well/better imo.
I think the episode where isagi and nagi were losing to barou was the most frustrating episode of anime I’ve experienced. He just stood there for the half the match fucking crying instead of trying to keep them from losing. He would have minute long internal dialogues just to them run past with the ball, there was no genuine attempt to defend the goal. But the worst part is that they thought they could make me believe that isagi would be worse than a character who had made no previous contributions to team z and had never uttered a word.
