There should be psychological testing for any presidential candidate to screen out for Psychopathy, Sociopathy, Toxic Narcissism and Cognitive function. The call should not be for just ONE candidate, it should be universal and performed by an Independent Neuropsychologist and Psychologist. People keep forgetting that our country is 248 years old, and way back then it never would have occurred to the founders to set an age limit. People died at much younger ages from a variety of illnesses as well as environmental conditions and other circumstances. This was most likely an absence map seizure. It may or may not be temporary which can be co grilled and does not make a person disabled at that degree. He was way too old and should have stepped down a long time ago.

Yes a cognitive test is a great idea. It was important for my father to see the results in real time right in front of his face. Once the reality set in, he gave up his car keys and I took the fuses out of his stove and disconnected his microwave so he wouldn't hurt himself. He lived independently in an apartment for a few years with my help and PSW's helping after that. But most importantly, he didn't hurt anyone else!!!!

Both should have rigorous and full testing by Reputable physicians (NOT Ronnie Jackson or Johnson, if you are talking to Trump). Just to get answers in both, that hopefully are reliable. It's horrible that they are conflating a complete physical check-up with a cognitive exam for Alzheimer's/ dementia, saying he is in perfect health but doesn't need a Montreal Cognitive assessment.
My father was a lawyer forced to undergo a medical evaluation by the Law Society. As it turns out, he did have Alzheimer's, and his license to practice was revoked immediately.
Indeed, we can ask our leaders the same questions for the most critical job in the United States.
As Dr Gupta points out, strong indicators indicate the need for this testing as soon as possible. They are testing for everything but this.
Democrats should not rally around the president to make a protective shield. If he does have this condition, there is no shame in it. Lots of elderly people suffer from this condition, unfortunately.
If he needs to be replaced, voters will be relieved that the proper steps were taken.
But to suggest, "Keep going; it's a better alternative to Trump," as the reporter did, is infuriating.
Or "Let's see how he does on the campaign trail in the next few weeks."

I don't disagree with the comments by Maria, but with all due respect, this is not about how Joe Biden compares with Donald Trump, but rather about whether voters have confidence that Joe Biden is the best Democratic candidate. It's not as though Democratic voters will suddenly switch to Donald Trump if Joe Biden continues in the race -- however a great many will just sit out the election (not vote). It's quite baffling to me that so many Democratic leaders & influencers do not get this simple fact.

I am young and I have ADHD and therefore I lack short term memory. If the test is timed, I would fail it. I wouldn't get points for the words. I also, in my daily life, have difficulty retrieving words. Somedays, my speech is slurred and it's hard for me to vocalize. However, I have an excellent ability to comprehend and create intertwined systems and assign tasks to achieve goals. I also have a good emotional intelligence, and I can quickly reshuffle assignments/staff if I perceive they may be causing burnout and thus affecting productivity, this allows me to keep my staff motivated and engaged. I have a directorial position. The irony is that my lack of executive function (which is an area of cognition) would make me a subpar worker, but doesn't interfere in my ability to manage a company because my staff is in charge of the more executive function heavy tasks, while I am in charge of the more abstract, big picture ideas, which they struggle with. I think these cognitive tests fail to represent the variety of brains, the different ways we think, and how those can be helpful for different jobs. A lot of politicians, leaders, have "neurodivergent" brains which allows them to think the impossible. Let's acknowledge that and remember that the reason why these cognitive tests aren't routinely taken is that they are inherently flawed.
Disagree. There are many many tests out there . Mini mental status exam , etc to test pts. Also brain MRI imaging , trial test with L- dopa for parkinsons. Fdp pet scan for Alzheimer’s and the list is endless. There are a plethora neurology tests done on the spot that can test short and long term memory, executive functions , etc… We should be aiming for transparency.

There is no single test capable of diagnosing Alzheimers. The tests that you're mentioning for Alzheimer's is actually a test used to distinguish cognitive impairment caused by Dementia from that caused by Alzheimer's, and therefore provide the correct treatment. The PET imaging detects amyloids, which are a component of Alzheimers, however, amyloids can be present in people without Alzheimers. The presence is predictive of developing Alzheimers in the future, but when that will happen is not known, he could live until age 100 and die before he develops Alzheimers, but if the imaging is done and published the public would immediately assume he has Alzheimers. These types of evaluations are very nuanced and need to be interpreted in conjunction with many other factors. You can't just publish a chart and let uninformed people decide for themselves.
The cognitive symptoms Biden shows are normal and gradually show for people starting at age 30: slowness in thinking and difficulties sustaining attention, multitasking, holding information in mind, and word-finding. These normal symptoms don't warrant a test like the MMSE you mention which literally asks "which day it is," he hasn't shown at all that he doesn't know where he is or when he is or who he is...
Go back to the Bork confirmation hearings that he presided 40 years ago, they are on TH-cam, or go watch his interviews with Colbert. You will see that he clearly loses his train of thought and struggles to arrive to conclude with a point when he begins a sentence, frequently, at ages 30, 40, 60, 70... I also recommend you go watch slower interviews from the past few years in which he slowly, quietly, and with a raspy voice describes intricate strategies in the Pacific or the relationship with Europe. Go also watch Macron criticizing the Inflation Reduction Act as one of the pieces of legislation that has given most power to America over Europe.
Additionally, look at the many instances during the past 3.5 years in which Biden was criticized and said he was too old:
- Announcing Russia's intentions of invading Ukraine as a warning to the world (which must've been a personal decision). All the news pundits said that Biden was senile for that. Then days later Russia invaded Ukraine.
- The SVB crisis: recession guaranteed. Recession didn't happen, deposits were guaranteed.

This is a very effective presidency that operates a lot under the radar. We've had 3.5 boring years, without scandals, so everything is becoming news in this need for drama. But no one is talking about Trump's 90 minute lies during the debate.
